Episode 8, Season 1 Title: " I Will Remember You "
Written by: David Greenwalt and Jeannie Renshaw Directed by: David Grossman Original Air Date: 23 November 1999
Teaser:
Its morning in the office of Angel Investigations (8:53 a.m. to be exact) and Angel has just returned from Sunnydale where he went, via Doyles vision, to help Buffy, even though he stayed out of sight. Cordelia is worried about him and she discusses that with Doyle as the two watch him through the inner office window. Angel picks up a stake and Cordy misinterprets this action as one of suicide. They rush in telling him not to do it. Angel laughs, telling them he needed the stake to level his desk.
Angel is also touched by their concern, telling him he is fine and he was only in Sunnydale to protect Buffy and didn't want to drudge up all the pain with another encounter. Cordy is surprised by this and tells Angel that if her ex came to town and didn't say hello she'd be . . . "a little upset. This sentence was finished by Buffy as she walked in the door.
Act I:
Buffy tells everyone she was in town to see her father since it is Thanksgiving, but its clear shes found out about Angels cloak and dagger jaunt to Sunnydale and confronts him. Cordy introduces Doyle to Buffy and then the two immediately leave so they can talk. Buffy wants an explanation because she can sense when Angel is present even if she doesn't see him and it throws her off. Angel explains that he thought it was best that way and Buffy finally calms and realizes that he did help her when she needed it. They agree to stick to the plan of keeping their distance till enough time had passed for them to forget. Just as they agree to stay out of one anothers way and Buffy turns to leave, a Mohra demon crashes through the window. He is wielding a sword and clad in armor similar to a samurais.
Hearing the commotion from the other room, Doyle says that they should do something. However, Cordy tells Doyle that Buffy and Angel resolve their differences by fighting, misinterpreting what is really going on there. The two leave the building.
The Mohra demon attacks Angel and Buffy joins in the fight. Angel stabs it but it escapes into the sewers, where Angel, armed with an axe, and Buffy, armed with a stake follow. As they follow the demon heading towards the ocean, bickering at each other. They both feel awkward being in each others presence again and Angel tells her he feels weird, rubbing the traces of Mohra demon blood on his hand. She confesses her feelings of how confusing it is being around him until he stops her, pouring her soul out. He was referring to the demons blood, and how powerful it is. Angel quickly agrees with what Buffy is saying, feeling just as awkward around her as she is him. Despite the longing they have for one another, being apart is easier; it hurts but he has to live with it. They both have to live with it. They split up: Buffy goes up into the lightwhere Angel cant followto track the demon towards the ocean while Angel follows the sewers.
Further along in the sewers, the Mohra demon attacks Angel and cuts his hand. While fighting Angel kills the demon but not before some more of its blood gets on Angel's hand and mixes with the blood from his cut. There is an odd glow on his hand and Angel drops to his knees. A flash of light engulfs his body, making him cry out. It is followed by a deep gulp of air and Angel, with a pained and shocked expression, says, "I'm alive," the beating of his heart thundering in the background.
Act II:
Cordy and Doyle return to the office to find it a wreck. Cordy is horrified that Buffy killed Angel until she realized that she just hadn't dusted recently. Angel walks in the front door from out of the broad daylight and explains to them about the demon. He decides not to tell Buffy of his newfound mortality until its clear if its temporary or permanent. As he tried to understand whats going on, he is suddenly overcome with an overwhelming urge to consume every piece of food in the refrigerator. Angel sends Cordy to find Buffy but says not to tell her what has happened to him, and to also get him some mint chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream.
Later in his study, Angel finds the demon in one of his occult texts, The Book of Kelsor. Doyle reads that it is a Mohra demon, an assassin of the Soldiers of Darkness and that its veins run with the blood of eternity and it needs salt to survive as Angel looks at his reflection in the glass. Angel wants to know why this happened to him and Doyle explains that the Powers That Be only divulge information on a need to know basis. Angel wants to talk to them but Doyle explains he can only do so through channels and reluctantly agrees to take him to the Oracles.
At the Gateway to Lost Souls, a subterranean cave located under the post office, Doyle performs an incantation that will gain Angel access to the Oracles but warns him that they are finicky. Only Angel can go because he is a 'warrior' as Doyle is just a 'lowly messenger'.
In a blinding flash of light, Angel finds himself inside a chamber on another plane of reality. Before him are the Oracles, a brother and sister dressed in long robes with golden skin decorated with blue designs. They refer to Angel as a lower being, and ask him for an offering, something Doyle forget to tell him. He gives him his wristwatch, which floats off his person and into the females waiting hand. Angel asks what has happened to him and if his newfound mortality is part of a spell or that hes been poisoned. They reply that the auguries say no. They tell him that he is no longer a warrior but now a human, that this is meant to be, and that he is released from his fealty.
With that, Angel is returned to the cave, standing beside Doyle, who says that Angel had just stepped through the door. Angel informs Doyle he is human again and has no idea where to go, nor what to do. Doyle asks him what he wants.
Buffy is down by the beach and as soon as she senses Angel, she turns around. She watches as he steps out of the shadows and into the sunlight without bursting into flames and walks towards her. Smiling, Angel takes a stunned Buffy in his arms and kisses her passionately.
Act III:
In the office Cordy is upset and informs Doyle that where Buffy leads, dark forces follow. He wonders if shes just jealous. She explains to Doyle about Angel's no-happiness-clause and knows that they have been downstairs for hours not just having tea and crackers.
Down in Angel's kitchen, he offers Buffy some more tea. They talk about not rushing into things because now Angel doesn't know what his purpose is anymore and doesn't want to jeopardize Buffy. She admits she has fantasized about him being human. She gets up to leave and they touch hands, which leads to a kiss, which leads to a passionate embrace, and to both of them on top of the kitchen table.
Later that night, a rather naked Angel is at the refrigerator. He runs to the bed where Buffy, dressed in his shirt, helps him with his mortal coordination as he accidentally drips ice cream on his chest, which she likes off.
Meanwhile, Cordy and Doyle are at a local bar reflecting on how she is out of a job now and how Doyle is off the hook with the Powers That Be. No sooner when the words are out of his mouth, he suddenly has a mind-splitting vision. In it, he sees that the Mohra demon is back, bigger and badder and stronger than before.
In Angels apartment, Buffy and Angel are lying in bed together as she listens to his heartbeat. She doesn't want the day to end but he tells her: "Sleep, we'll make another one like it tomorrow." She's happy to finally be a normal girl in the arms of her normal boyfriend.
Just then, Doyle wakes up Angel and informs him that his vision showed him that the Mohra demon regenerated. Deducing it needs salt to survive, Angel believe it might be heading towards a saline plant in Redondo and wants to go after it alone. However, Doyle wants to Buffy along but Angel tells him to let her sleep and not ruin her perfect day. He also wants to be able to handle this alone; otherwise it cant work out between him and the Chosen. They next get the Book of Kelsor and research ways to kill the demon.
At an industrial plant Doyle reads from the book and tells Angel to kill it by destroying the thousand eyes. Angel gets nauseous at the sight of some dead bodiesanother new adjustment to being human--when the Mohra demon gets the drop on them, immediately knocking Doyle and going after Angel.
Act IV:
Angel and the demon fight but it's not looking good, despite all his efforts. At that moment in the office of Angel Investigations, Buffy is looking for Angel. She sees Cordy putting together a 'going out of business' sale sign and asks her about Angels whereabouts. Cordy tells Buffy to stop thinking about herself, annoyed that the Slayer isnt concerned about Cordys pain. Although Angel told her not to, Cordy lets it slip to Buffy that he went to fight the demon alone.
Back at the saline plant, the fight continues as Angel and the demon fall into a huge chasm beneath the surface. The demon informs him that the End of Days has begun when Buffy arrives. He continues to announce that a great darkness is coming and together they were powerful but alone they will die. Buffy continues to fight the demon as a battered Angel tells her to smash the jewel in his forehead, which is the demons thousand eyes that Doyle mentioned. She does and as a brilliant light consumes the demon. Next, Buffy rushes to cradle a beaten Angel in her arms.
The next day Angel has returned to the Oracles. He asks if what the demon said was true about the End of Days. They confirm that the Slayer will die. Angel wants to return to his vampire self. They say they cannot change what has been done. He argues that the assassin took a warrior from their cause and he can't protect her or anyone as a human. They agree to create a temporal fold for 24 hours as if the day never happened. They tell him that he alone will remember and it's another burden that he will shoulder.
Buffy's waiting in Angels apartment as the clock reads 3 minutes to 9:00 a.m. As he comes downstairs he explains to her that he went to see the Oracles and asked them to turn him back into a vampire. To do so, they will take back the day. Buffy gets upset and begins to cry as he asks her how can they be together at the cost of her life. They hold each other as one more minute remains and she asks him how is she supposed to go on remembering what they had. He tells her she won't remember, crying himself. They kiss as the clock strikes 9 a.m. and she whispers: "I'll never forget."
Suddenly a flash of light its a day before as Angel finds himself back in his office with Buffy, who confronts him on his actions in Sunnydale, ending the discussion by the enough time had passed for them to forget speech. The Mohra demon crashes through the window. Knowing what to do, Angel smashes the jewel in its forehead, killing it. Buffy, amazed, asks how he knew to kill it and he replied he's had time to catch up on his reading. As he looks at the clock, its 9:02 a.m. Buffy turns and leaves.
