Episode 10, Season 1 Title: "Parting Gifts"
Written by: David Fury and Jeannine Renshaw Directed by: James A. Contner Original Air Date: 14 December 1999
Teaser:
Angel is visiting the Oracles and he tells them that he needs Doyle and requests that they fold time and bring him back. They object, telling Angel that everything happens for a reason. He argues that Doyle was his connection to the Powers That Be and without his visions Angels purpose may now be lost to him. They assure him that when one door closes another is opened and not to bother them again with such trifle matters.
Meanwhile a Demon is being chased down an alley by a motorcycle ridden by a mysterious person all dressed in leather.
Act I:
At the office, Cordelia while wistfully picking up coffee cups tells Angel shes looking for Doyles special mug as she needs something tangible to prove that he was once there. An alarm beeps and Cordelia has to leave to go to an audition, as she opens the door to leave, the demon from the alley is standing on the other side and startles her. His name is Barney and he picks up on her performance anxiety, giving us the first insight into his demon powers.
Cordelia is standing before three producers in her audition for a National commercial for 'Stain-be-Gone'. As she goes through her first take she is still reflecting on Doyle and trying desperately to smile. The producers look very confused as she starts to cry. They ask for a more upbeat performance and offer her another try. Jumping up and down, Cordelia attempts to psyche herself up, but as she begins again she is hit by a very excruciating vision.
We again see the leather clad biker following the trail of the Demon but we don't get a look at his face.
At the office Barney and Angel discuss the assassin that has chased him through several states. Angel wonders if the assassin is a demon and Barney thinks this may be the case as he seems to know all the demon hangouts.
The biker is opening up a black satchel full of weapons and he removes a crossbow. We see him walking towards a building and then checking out some yellowy gunge on the wall.
Angel asks Barney why he in particular is being pursued and comments that the assassin must have a grudge against him for some reason. Barney admits that he is an Empath Demon and he is a card cheat but although he is evil, he is not evil.
Cordy returns from her unsuccessful audition. Angel notices that she is behaving a little strangely and Cordelia plants a huge kiss on his lips. Angel thinks that she is acting out of grief, but Cordelia tells him she didnt feel anything and asks him if he did. He says not. Cordelia is angry as she still has the visions and she tells Angel that she cant believe that Doyle would do this to her. Angel realizes Cordelia had a vision and that Doyle passed it onto her. She is now his link to the 'powers that be'. The vision was of a " . . . grey blobby thing." Angel wants to know more but Cordelia just wants to get rid of the gift and as Barney comes out of the bathroom she kisses him only to find out that he is a client and ugh a demon.
As Angel is at the door to Barneys apartment we see a shadow of a man following him. As he is about to enter the room he is pushed and his assailant appears out of the shadows and aims the crossbow at Angel. It's Wesley W. Price.
Act II:
Wesley approaches Angel with a new tough-guy attitude but it falls short. Angel knocks the crossbow to the floor and appraises Wesleys appearance, he wonders if this interesting new look is a new image for the Watchers Council. Wesley informs Angel that he no longer works for the Watchers Council; he is a rogue demon hunter now and he is tracking a very vicious demon that collects unique powers from its victims and has left a trail of corpses. Angel assumes it must be after Barney for his empathic ability. As Wesley is describing the demon a blob of green goo falls on his shoulder and as both he and Angel look up at the ceiling the demon leaps at them. A fight ensues and Wesley shoots the demon with the crossbow. It exits through the window and escapes down the alley.
At Angels apartment, Cordelia attempts to draw the object from her vision. Barney senses her pain over the loss of Doyle, he tells her of his empathic ability but she wants him to mind his own business. As he apologises to her she reminisces about Doyle. Angel and Wesley arrive and Barney recognises him straight away as the assassin that has been chasing him. Angel explains that it is ok and follows Barney from the room. Cordelia looks around her and seeing Angel gone saunters over to Wesley and kisses him, at this point she has not actually realised that it is he. Wesley makes a joke that the kiss worked out a little better than last time (Buffy Season 3) as Cordelia realises whom she has just kissed.
Angel explains to Barney that he and Wesley encountered the demon chasing him and they suspect he wants to steal Barneys empathic ability. Wesley hits the books and discovers that the demon is a Kungai Demon of Asian origin and its greatest weapon is a tack horn that is capable of consuming another persons life force. He suspects that it will be hiding out in Korea Town and Angel heads out to find it, much to the disdain of Wesley who wants to accompany him. Angel having already lost Doyle does not want to risk anyone else and leaves Wesley with Cordelia to protect Barney.
Angel is questioning a guy at a Massage Parlour in Korea Town and it seems he knows him as he uses his name and speaks in his native tongue. He is reluctant to give any information and says that Kungai Demons are not welcome there. Unwilling at first as he does not want to upset his customers he agrees to let Angel look around after he offers him some money.
At the office, Cordelia continues working on the sketch and confides in Barney about her visions. Cordelia tells him that she will never forgive Doyle for passing her the visions but Barney reminds her that Doyle gave her a precious gift, the most valuable thing he had.
Back at the bathhouse Angel finds the Demon. His tack-horn is missing and he is dying.
As Cordelia fixes coffee, Barney is talking on his cell phone. He says has the Kungai Horn but he has found something better and looks over at Cordelia.
Act III:
As Cordelia is pouring the coffee we see Barney rip out the phone socket. He then begins a barrage of insults at Cordelia and tells her that she is a terrible actor. With an evil grin he says, Me, on the other hand, you got to admit, Im a pretty fine actor. Fooled you. Cordelia bolts and Barney blocks her way, telling her that he knows she feels guilty about Doyles death.
Meanwhile, at the bathhouse, the Kungai is trying to talk to Angel but he is unable to understand the language. Wesley shows up and offers to help, as he understands the demons dialect. Wesley attempts to translate.
Barney ties Cordelia to the table.
Wesley knows that the tack-horn has been taken for a purpose but he is unable to translate the final word that will explain why.
Back at the apartment, Cordelia tells Barney she is having a vision about him and he is in great pain, she then kicks him. As she attempts her escape, he chases her and hits her across the face knocking her out.
At the bathhouse the Kungai demon describes his killer as having heart radar and Angel realises he means Barney.
Cordelia wakes up in some sort of storage room and recognizes the image from her vision amongst several disembodied parts. Barney and his accomplice are discussing the wares they have stolen from their victims.
Angel and Wesley arrive back at the apartment and see the remains of the struggle. They blame themselves for leaving Cordelia alone. As Angel searches for clues, Wesley admits that he was fired from the Council. Angel sees Cordelia's sketch and recognizes it as a sculpture by Van Geeson; 'Maiden with Urn'. They research to find out where it might be and Wesley realises that the Kungai's last words, caller sale mean auction. They agree to rescue Cordelia together.
At the hotel an auction is already taking place. Wolfram & Hart are represented. Cordelia is placed on the auction block for her 'Eyes of a Seer and links to the Powers That Be' the bidding begins at $2,000.
Act IV:
As the bidding continues, we cut back to Angel's apartment where he has discovered that the statue used to be displayed at the Hotel Ramsay in LA. Wesley is taping a knife to his leg.
The auction is winding down and has reached a figure of $11,000, Cordelia desperate for her life, goads the bidders to go higher. As the bids reach $20, 000 it seems all over, but the lady from Wolfram & Hart puts in a bid of $30, 000. Sold to Wolfram and Hart! Back stage the lawyer is inspecting her merchandise and tells Barney that her employers want the eyes extracted. He asks for another $1000 for this process, after some argument she finally agrees.
Angel and Wesley arrive at the hotel and ask for the convention hall where the auction is taking place. At first the employee tells them there is no auction, but Angel vamps out and he then directs them to the auction room. They're too late it's over.
Barney prepares to extract Cordelia's eyes as Angel and Wesley arrive back stage. They burst in and Angel (still in vamp face) proceeds to fight the security guys, meanwhile Wesley is hopping on one leg as he tries to get the knife that earlier he taped to his leg. Angel shouts to Wesley to get Cordelia, unable to free the knife he picks up a claw laying on the floor and severs the ropes. Barney blocks their exit and punches Wesley puts up a good fight.
Meanwhile the lawyer from Wolfram & Hart is making a hasty exit. She is advising someone on her cell phone that they have lost their auction item and she is sure they can guess who is responsible for fouling things up.
Angel is still fighting, and Wesley has Barney on the floor punching him. Barney gets the upper hand for a moment and pins Wesley down. Cordelia sees a horn lying on a nearby table and stabs Barney in the back shouting, Feel this feeling creepo! His body turns grey then black as it deflates and finally disintegrates.
Back at the apartment Angel is cooking breakfast as Cordelia irons her visionary sketch. She frames it as a thank you for saving her and as a reminder of Doyle. Wesley prepares to leave and head out on his lone demon hunting. As he says goodbye to Angel and Cordelia, he is obviously stalling and really doesn't want to leave. Angel picks up on this and invites him to stay for breakfast. Apparently Angel is a great cook and Wesley happily drops his bag and sits down.
