Episode 13, Season 1 Title: "She"
Written by: David Greenwalt & Marti Noxon Directed by: David Greenwalt Original Air Date: 8 February 2000
Teaser:
Cordelia is having a party! Her apartment is packed full of people enjoying themselves. Wesley is dancing (if you can call it that!) in the background. Cordy; the optimal hostess, asks Angel if she can get him anything, to which he uncomfortably answers that he is fine. She does not believe him
Wesley continues his dancing. Noticing Angel, he ventures over to him, enthuses over the mini-Reubens, and suggests they hit on the women. Wesley is approached by a female, whom he attempts to chat up and fails, much to Angels amusement. Later Angel and Laura, another of the attendees, are chatting. Angel is very uncomfortable and has a vision of himself. dancing. When Laura asks him to dance, he replies, I dont dance. He then goes into the darkened kitchen and strikes up a conversation with Dennis, Cordelias ghostly roommate.
Meanwhile, in a cold storage room on the other side of town, a man watches over a long wooden crate stamped: Danger Hazardous Materials. He is taking a break tossing back a beer when he hears noises from the box. As he opens it, we see his face contort with fear and he says, Oh my God!
Act I:
Angel Investigations. Angel arrives and asks about coffee. Cordelia tells him she has ordered beans by mistake. She then tells him to mush the bag with his vampire strength. Cordy thanks him for being his usual brooding black hole self at her party. Angel apologises and admits he will try harder, but that he only has two modes with people; bite and avoid. Cordelia informs Angel haughtily, that even Wesley was cooler, as he enters the office. As Wesley wistfully hopes for more of the tiny food products Angel realises that Wesley must be broke and offers him a job. Cordy receives a vision.
A multitude of flashes and we see the man in the warehouse burn to death. Angel must go to the Jericho Ice House to find the corpse. After consulting the maps, Wesley tells Angel he must travel by car, as there is no route through the tunnels.
Jerico Ice House. We see the dead man lying on the floor amid glass shards. Angel and Wesley pull up and Angel enters leaving Wesley at the car. Inspecting the charred body Angel removes a business card from a firm called Peter Wilkens private security.
Wesley is standing outside with his trusty axe, standing guard, while Angel searches the warehouse. As Angel approaches the crate, open and full of ice, a shadow passes the doorway. Angel pursues and catches the man, threatening him with a crowbar. The man tells Angel he is Tyah, a hunter from another dimension, here to stop the Bringer of Chaos, who has destroyed his world. Angel hears that he will not be able to kill it so he should stay away.
Back in the office, Angel passes Wesley a sketch of Tyah and explains the race has passed through a portal. Cordy, disgusted that the rules keep changing and that there are portals now! agrees to research any other incinerations in the area. Angel is to check out the victims office. Angel arrives outside the building and, upon finding the door locked, scales the wall to the roof. Inside, he searches through the files, and breaking open the desk drawer, he finds a large shipping order from Jerico Ice, which he places in his jacket pocket. The door opens behind Angel, and as he turns, he is thrown across the office by a burning blast. A woman enters.
Act II:
The woman is also from another dimension. She is stunning, with ridges on her cheekbones and a tattoo over her left eye. She demands to know what Angel is doing in the office. He will not reply but defends himself with a chair as she attacks him again. This does him no good as she sends him crashing through a closed doorway. Her cell phone rings and she answers it, leaving the office immediately afterwards.
On the street below, the woman gets into a car, and we see Angel jump down from the roof and give chase, using his hated cell phone to contact Cordelia. He gets a low battery message and the call is hindered by static as Cordelia informs him of four similar killings over the last 11 months. He tells her to keep researching but loses the connection. With a disgusted comment about cell phones being cooked up by a bored warlock, Angel throws his phone into the back seat of the car.
The woman arrives at an art gallery where she informs a security guard that a man is following her. Angel, trying to blend in, removes his jacket and comments on a painting; La Musique aux Tuileries by Manet. The guards fan out and Angel sees the woman entering a back room as he continues that the poet Baudelaire is depicted in the painting. He then quotes from his poem Le Vampire, to which the crowd applauds.
Waking Cordy from a desk-dream sale at Neimans, Wesley informs Cordy that Tyah is of the Vigories of Oden Tal. To exist they have to consume half their body weight a day, of a stew made from rotting plants and flowers.
Angel meanwhile has followed the woman into the back room. She realizes he is a vampire as her burn blast would have knocked out a human for hours. She warns him to leave as a portal opens and a young girl falls to the floor at her feet. Tyah and his friends burst in to take it and the other but Angel has different ideas. A fight ensues with Tyah taking the girl while Angel and the woman are busy.
California Florist Mart. Tyah and another demon take the girl upstairs to destroy it by removing a spine like extrusion on her back.
Act III:
Angels apartment. Angel explains to the woman about his Gypsy curse as he gives her bandages to dress her wound. She explains that the girl was a runaway from her homeland. Once they succumb, the spine extrusion is broken. This is where their passions, personality, and physical strength are stored; they are controllable once this happens. She tells Angel she was royalty once, her name is Princess Jhiera, and she helps the women of her dimension escape capture upon maturity. They come to this world in a fever, as they cannot control their powers; she keeps them safe until they can. Angel asks about the men who have been burned, she tells him that there are mistakes occasionally and warns him to stay out of the way. He tells her he cannot do that, as it is his job to protect the men in this dimension. Jhieras spine begins to glow and Angel is attracted to her.
At the Flower Mart, Cordy and Wesley arrive. They search for the demons and find some of them talking. The girl is also there but her spine has been broken and she is very malleable. One of the demons states that they must find Jhiera and this must end.
Palm Ridge Spa. Jhiera arrives and talks to the caretaker about the girls. They are all lying in baths filled with ice and need further isolation and temperature adjustment. Jhiera knows a move is necessary, and when the caretaker suggests his shaman can help she jumps at the chance.
Back at the Flower Mart, Wesley is trying unsuccessfully to reach Angel on the cell phone. Wesley and Cordy decide they need to find Angel to warn him that the Princess and the women have been located. They return to Angels apartment to discover him toweling off after a cold shower. Cordy tells Angel that the men said something about a shipment of ice and Angel remembers the invoice in his jacket pocket.
Act IV:
Palm Ridge Spa. Angel enters and tells Wesley and Cordy to stand guard, to warn of the arrival of the Oden Tal. The caretaker tries to stall Angel but he finds Jhiera and warns her. Cordy enters with a warning that the men are here; again, the caretaker stalls while Cordy and Wesley move the girls. Angel and Jhiera remain to fight.
Cordy and Wesley load the scantily clad girls into the ice chests on the truck, Wesleys attention wandering all the time, much to Cordys disgust. They rejoin the fight only to be captured by Tyah and his men. Under threat, Jhiera runs, leaving Wesley and Cordelia to escape with Angels help.
Outside, Jhiera is caught before she can reach the truck. Just as the men attempt to break her spine extrusion Angel appears to save her. He grabs Tyah and tells his men to let Jhiera go or he will kill them. Jhiera escapes in the van and Angel warns the Oden Tal men to take their fight elsewhere. After being questioned as to why it involves the human race, Angel replies that he is not human and morphs to his vamp face. The men then leave.
The next day in the office Angel has the bag of coffee beans in his hands again. In desperation, he tries to mush them but the bag splits and beans spray all over the floor. Cordy and Wesley walk in the door and Wesley falls on his backside. Jhiera enters and asks to speak to Angel. They enter the office and Jhiera tells him she wanted him to know the girls were safe.
Jhiera turns to go and we see her spine glowing again. We close with Angel feeling drawn to Jhiera again as she leaves.
