When Trevor is attacked, Kate blames Angel for not doing more. Meanwhile, through flash backs, Angel's own father is introduced, Angel's past as a human is shown and Angelus is born.
Goofs: * In the scene where Angel visits Kate Lockley in her office at the police department, the boom mike is visible when Kate is going through her filing cabinet. * Placement of Cordelia's hands holding the security folder changes. * In the scene with Kate sitting on the floor crying, the camera pans across her father's dead body and just before he is off-screen the actor blinks. * Wesley claims to be doing a vivisection on the remains of a demon. However, a vivisection is only done on living specimens. What Wesley has done would be more aptly described as an autopsy, or a post mortem.

Episode 15, Season 1 Title: "Prodigal"
Written by: Tim Minear Directed by: Bruce Seth Green Original Air Date: 22 February 2000
Teaser:
Galway, Ireland 1753. Anna, the family servant girl, is in the courtyard while Master Liam (Angels mortal name) is flirting with her. Liams father returns from church early and reprimands his son, disgustedly calling him a layabout scoundrel. This is followed by a backhand to his sons face.
We come back to the present day where Angel is taking a beating, from a demon in the subway, when it suddenly pauses, and clutches its chest.
On the subway platform, a fellow officer informs Detective Kate Lockley that a crazy, homeless guy went nuts. He rampaged through the car until something pulled him out, although 15 passengers on the damaged subway car saw nothing! He remains to get statements while Kate searches the tunnel.
Angel is still battling the demon in the tunnel when it keels over and dies. Kate appears from behind the train and says Well I guess I can forget about reading him his rights
Act I:
Kate confesses she has trouble with the otherworldly stuff. Does she call the coroner or hazardous materials? Angel tells her demons are nototherworldly as such, but this seems like too much information for Kate to deal with. Angel then tells her not to worry about the coroner; these things take care of themselves. Angel notices Kates father Trevor has arrived. Kate realises her dad has been scanning the police frequency again, and is touched that he has shown up when he discovers she is the lead officer on the scene. Angel offers up the fact that her father seems to care about her, which leads to a confrontation. She tells him that he is probably a decent guy for a you know what. But lets keep this strictly business. We dont get personal.
Flashback: A pub and a very drunk Liam, who is brawling with the locals, as Darla and a barmaid, look on. The barmaid warns Darla that Liam will spurn her, the following morning, but Darla just smiles in amusement.
Angel Investigations: Cordelia tries to teach Angel the access code for the new alarm system for the office. Wesley however, holds Angels attention by informing him the demon that he fought was a Kwaini, a demon that is invariably female, and extremely peaceful. This leaves Angel pondering whether something on the train caused the demon to attack.
Angel visits Kate at work, making her uncomfortably aware that there are differing levels of evilness. Not all things classed as Demon are evil, and vice versa. He asks for a list of the passengers on the train, trying to discover what the Kwaini was after, and narrows the hunt to the deliveryman who pulled the emergency brake.
Angel contacts Wesley, who is in the subway tunnel with Cordelia, disposing of the demon remains. He informs Wesley that Kate is different now, and has been ever since she ran Angel through with a two-by-four. Wesley tells Angel that he can hardly blame Kate for being skittish about the supernatural. He tries to tell Angel that women in particular have a harder time accepting the dark forces, just as we see Cordelia merrily hacking away at the demon remains in the background.
Angel trails the deliveryman to an apartment block, and follows him upstairs. To Angels surprise, the man receives a package from Kates father, Trevor Lockley.
Act II:
Angel knocks on Mr. Lockleys door. Trevor worries that Angel has bad news about Kate, but Angel assures him she is fine. He asks Trevor what was in the package, that he gave to the driver, and then accuses him of taking something from the crime scene. He tells Trevor that Kate will not find out her father was at the crime scene for his own reasons, and not concern for his daughter.
Flashback: Liam is saying goodbye to his mother and sister. His father tells him he wanted a son who would be a man, to which Liam retorts that he could not fail enough for his father. He storms out of the house, with his fathers harsh words echoing behind him. That night, Liam meets Darla in a pub, and she turns him.
Kate and her father are enjoying a hot dog at the marina, until her dad grills her about Angel, saying he had made an impression on him. She tells her dad that Angel is a good private investigator and nothing else.
Wesley is performing an autopsy on the Kwaini parts that Cordelia brought back. He explains to Angel that the adrenal gland is very inflamed, due to a synthetic additive much like PCP. Angel deduces that the deliveryman had been carrying the drug, and the Kwaini had been desperate for more. Cordelia races down the stairs, in her undercover disguise of sunglasses and a blonde wig, and tells them she has found the deliveryman at Kels exotic auto warehouse.
Inside the auto shop we see Trevor Lockley complaining to two men in suits, stating he never agreed to remove evidence from crime scenes, or to pump his own daughter for information. He is given an envelope stuffed with cash, to compensate him for his difficulties. After Trevors departure, a demon steps from the shadows. He gives the men instructions to kill Trevor, Angel, and Kate.
Act III:
Flashback: Liams funeral. About a dozen mourners attend. Liams mother and sister weep, but his father is stoic, watching his sons burial. When darkness falls, Darla steps out of the trees and waits for Liam to rise. Upon emerging, Liam is enthralled with his new life. When the caretaker comes upon them, Liam kills him. Darla tells him he can have anything he desires, and Liam desires revenge.
Back in the office, Cordelia is setting the alarm, as Wesley reads the instructions. Angel is about to leave for the car warehouse when Kate walks in. Cordelia is understandably miffed, as the alarm has not gone off. Kate has the list of passengers for Angel, as she tells him she cannot ignore his instincts.
Later Angel is leaving, to talk to Trevor again. Cordy hands him his keys and sets the alarm after he is gone. Suddenly, a demon bursts through the front door; right after the alarm announces an intruder. Another demon crashes through the window, accompanied by an electric voice announcing that the window is open. Wesley fights back, just as Angel returns and throws a vial of liquid on the floor. The demons chase the vial, and as the fight begins again, Cordy goes to turn off the alarm. Afterwards Angel calls Kate, gets her answering machine, and leaves her a message, informing her of her fathers danger and telling her he needs to get out of the house.
The men beat both Angel and Kate to Trevors home.
Flashback: Liam is home, explaining to his father that his sister invited him into the house. She had called him an Angel, so he must have made something of himself after all. Liam vamps out and kills his father.
Inside Trevors apartment, the men ask him if Kate knows anything. He tells them she knows nothing, as he reaches for his gun in his cabinet. Angel knocks on the door and Trevor urges him to leave. Since Angel has never been into the apartment, he cannot enter, and he pleads for Trevor to invite him in, but he refuses. This leaves Angel watching helplessly, as the two men vamp out, and kill Trevor. As Trevor dies, Angel kills one of the vampires, but the other escapes, passing Kate in the hallway.
Act IV:
Angel tries to explain to a grieving Kate, that her father had invited the men in, but not him. Kate just yells at him to leave.
Angel returns to the office for his weapons stash, and explains to Wesley that calmly, casually investigating is not working; he is going to plan B.
Back in her fathers apartment, Kate is in shock, hugging the walls. An envelope on the floor catches her attention and she investigates. It overflows with money and a business card for the auto shop.
Inside the auto shop warehouse, the men are standing around a desk when Kate enters. She fires a shot into each of them. When the head vampire approaches, she informs him that she knows what they are, and that the gun will not kill them. She then pulls out a stake and dusts him. The master demon appears, and as the vampires surround Kate, she empties the gun into them. Angel appears, with an axe in his hand, and joins the fight. The demons try to overpower Angel, but he is ready for them. He beheads the master demon, and defeats the others, as Kate dusts the last vampire. Angel tries to talk to her, but Kate tells him that her father was human, and Angel knows nothing about that. She then storms out of the warehouse, leaving Angel alone.
Flashback: Liam sits in the carnage of his family home, gloating over his revenge. Darla enters, and informs him that victory over your father took but a moment, but his defeat of you will last a life time.
In the cemetery, Kate visits her fathers grave. Angel, watching from the shadows, knows that any chance of friendship died with her father, whose gravestone reads Trevor Lockley beloved father.
