Episode 18, Season 1 Title: "Five by Five"
Written by: Jim Kouf Directed by: James A. Contner Original Air Date: 25 April 2000
Teaser:
The dark, dank streets below the LA freeway and a young home-boy is walking to meet up with his posse. Ahead, he sees three strangers at his local, trash can-fire burning-hangout. We see three hooded members, one with a gun in his hand as the home-boy yells a warning. As the strangers stand up we see that the arm holding the gun isn't his. In fact, it isn't even attached. As he tosses it into the fire, they turn and chase the young man. Running for his life he pulls his own gun and fires back as a black convertible races up behind them, tires screeching. Wesley is at the wheel and Angel is wielding his sword. As they close in, Angel starts lolloping off heads, demon heads that is, splattering Wesley in the interim. The car side-skids to a stop in front of the boy and Angel jumps out making sure this is Marquis and offers him a ride.
Elsewhere, in a downtown bus station, passengers are unloading from the newest Greyhound arrival. We see the black pants and boots of one, as we pan up and the person turns around, we see it's Faith. A man is watching, "New in town." Bright observation. He offers to help with money and a place to stay. Wrong observation! Faith plays the helpless act then sucker punches him. Putting him in a close-to-coma condition, she takes his wallet, keys and leather jacket saying, "I think I'm gonna like it here."
Act I:
Borsa, Romania 1898 ~ Angelus and Darla arrive home after an evening out. Angelus is blindfolded. It is his birthday and Darla has arranged for a gift. A young gypsy girl. Angelus morphs into vamp face and takes the girl while Darla watches.
Angel is in his office trying to convince Marquis that to 'keep from dying he better do the right thing!' In the outer office Cordelia is convinced that the kid is not going to testify. "You don't change a guy like that, what you see is what you get." Wesley is crashed out on the couch and as he rises he explains to Cordy that 'deep down inside everyone has the urge to do the right thing.' Angel tells Marquis that he has to face his demons sometime.
Across town at a nightclub, Faith is dancing up a storm, literally. Faith loves to dance! She's dancing with everyone and when one girlfriend gets a little jealous, Faith decks her. A fight ensues among other patrons but Faith, she just keeps dancing.
It's the next day and Wolfram & Hart are trying a case at the local Court House. W&H are being accused of witness tampering as their prime witness has failed to show. In return, W&H request a dismissal. But just as the argument is being placed, Angel walks in with Marquis. W&H's lawyer Lindsey McDonald glares at Angel.
Later, Lindsey is on the phone with, we assume, the senior partners. He informs them that Angel's involved. Lee, another attorney walks in the room with a folder. He has a solution to their problem.
In the hallway of W&H attorney Lilah stops Lee. She's been following the police reports and knows about the Rogue Slayer. She'll make the contact.
Back at Angel Investigations, Cordy is on the phone with a divorce case. Money talks. Angel and Wesley arrive and announce that they won the case. Wesley informs Angel that the boy was lucky but Angel counters that he just needed a little guidance. Wesley is now worried what W&H will do.
Later that night, Faith and Lilah leave a bar. She tells Faith she knows who she is and 'can bring order back into her life.' A limousine pulls up and Lee is inside. Faith gets in and the car drives off.
Act II:
Borsa, Romania 1898 ~ Darla arrives home to find Angelus cowering in the corner. He's raving about all the murders he's committed over the last 140 odd years. He informs Darla that the Gypsy's put a spell on him. She realizes that he has a soul and attempts to stake him but he rushes off into the night.
Faith is in the offices of Wolfram & Hart. Lee and Lilah are there as Lindsey reads from Faith's file about her Sunnydale arrest warrant. They know she's a Slayer and offer her remuneration, a reward, and a clean slate if she kills someone for them. Angel. "No problem." Lee informs her that she's on her own, W&H are not connected and warns Faith not to make him look bad. To which, Faith bashes his face on the desk a few times. One less for dinner.
The next day back at the Court House, Cordy is informing Angel and Wesley of their pending appointment. When they find out it's a divorce case Angel replies 'it's not what we do.' Faith appears behind him and shoots off a crossbow bolt. Angel catches it in mid-flight just as it reaches his heart. "That was so cool!" Faith observes, "this is gonna be fun." And she runs out of the building. Angel thought she was still in a coma. "Pretty lively coma," Cordy offers.
Back at the office, Angel calls up Giles who informs him that Faith had 'left Sunnydale a week ago.' Angel tells Wesley and Cordy to tract her down via police records and then make themselves scarce. Wesley warns him not to let his emotions control him, that Faith is not a demon but a sick girl and there still may be a chance to reach her.
Later, while Angel is downstairs in his apartment he hears a noise up in the office. As he steps inside he sees it's Faith and she has a gun. Witty Faith-ish banter ensues and she tosses him the gun, giving him first shot. He does, but it's housing blanks and he tosses it back. He didn't aim to kill so she feels he's not in the game and will have to 'up the stakes'. She shoots him, the second bullet wasn't a blank. "Let the games begin, " and she jumps out the window.
That night at W&H, Angel walks into Lindsey's office. He is looking through the desk as Lindsey walk in the door. Lindsey denies knowing Faith and explains that W&H have spent a fortune on Mystical barriers and digital recordings. They knew he was there and the police have been called. With less than idle threats, Angel leaves. Cordy and Wesley arrive at her apartment. Phantom Dennis won't let them in at first but then gives access but Faith is inside waiting. She asks them what could she do to really make Angel hate her? Wesley tries to appeal to her but she knocks Cordy out. Wesley's turn.
Act III:
Borsa, Romania 1898 ~ Angelus wanders the streets disheveled. As a dinner party passes he approaches and goes after a young woman shouting "I'm a monster!" The men attack but he morphs out and fights them off and drags the woman back into an ally and bites her.
Angel arrives at Cordy's apartment. She is bruised but alright. She tells him that Faith said he 'wasn't in the game.' Wesley and Faith are gone.
At the apartment where Faith is staying, Wesley is tied to a chair and gagged. He's seen better days. Faith's seems to be fraying at the edges. She taunts him that they have only 'done one of the 5 basic torture groups.' She removes the gag and Wesley sounds sincere as he tells her that he was her Watcher, she had a chance, but now she's just a piece of sh** ... Opps, never taunt the torturer! Faith breaks a picture and removes a shard of glass.
Cordy and Angel are plotting out Faith's path of destruction and determine where she must be, while back at the apartment Faith is sitting in the open window. She lets the bloody piece of glass fall to the ground, three stories below. Faith steps back inside and asks Wesley if he ever thinks about fate and destiny as she takes an aerosol can and lighter and plays at setting off the flame very near Wesley. Faith informs him "I don't."
Just then Angel busts through the door. Faith holds a knife to Wesley's throat. "'Bout time, Soul-boy! Ready to play now?" Angel quietly replies, "I'm ready."
Act IV:
Borsa, Romania 1898 ~ Angelus stumbles out of the alley muttering, "I can't, Oh God, I can't!" He wanders off into the streets as the woman, slowly appears from the alley, alive.
Faith asks Angel if he's really in the game now and he asks, "You don't think I know what you're after?" He tries to distract her with conversation and Wesley kicks his chair back allowing Angel a clear shot. The fight begins and Faith is on full attack. She taunts Angel to get him to fight back but he mainly just defends himself as she pummels him from one side of the room to another. She throws him to the ceiling and they crash into bookcases and through tables. Wesley watches from the floor as he tries to cut the ropes on the knife. Faith continues to egg him on to fight. She rushes him and they both go flying out the window to the alley below. The fight continues as it starts to rain. Faith is yelling at Angel, "I'm bad! You hear me? You don't know what evil is!" But Angel still only defends himself at best, landing a few hits just to keep Faith at bay. Wesley has cut loose and taking a knife heads downstairs. Angel shouts back, "I know what you want, but I'm not going to do it!" Faith starts to loose her grasp on herself as she yells back, "I'm evil!" but the words have lost their fury as she now just beats aimlessly upon his chest and the rain pours down. She begs through a mass of tears and pain, "Angel please, just do it . . . kill me." Wesley steps into the alley and stands there as Faith collapses into Angel's arms. He holds her and the knife slowly drops from Wesley's hand. We fade to black with only the sound of the thunder and the rain and Faith's pain.
