Episode 20, Season 1 Title: "War Zone"
Written by: Garry Cambell Directed by: David Straiton Original Air Date: 9 May 2000
Teaser:
Nighttime, and once again a lone girl is walking the seedier parts of the City of Angels underneath its dark and dangerous freeways. Three young men are following her as she nervously hurries her step to stay ahead of them. Turning a corner, they have headed her into a dead end alley. She turns to face them, terrified but not as terrified as when they morph into vamp face. But then again, she isn't exactly alone. A car pulls up and from a grounds eye view we see the black boots and flowing coat as someone steps from within. A carload of youths pulls up from the alley behind the prey with boys and girls armed for a fight against vampires. The camera pans up from the ground and we see a young black man holding his crossbow aloft. "You expecting someone else?"
Act I:
The plush apartment of Mr. David Navid, a very rich computer mogul. Minnie Blackwell he's not, but he is having a party and Cordelia, Wesley and Angel have been invited, or hired. Navid is a very nervous and nerdish kind of a guy who is being blackmailed. "Do you know Dungeons & Dragons?" he asks. "Seen a few," Angel replies. Apparently he and a few of his friends got carried away playing D&D with a little demon romance. Wesley offers an explanation which is Madam Dorian's, a demon brothel in Bel Aire. Another man, Lenny Edwards took some not-so-pleasant pictures of Navid and he wants them back.
Back at the alley, the Hole In The Wall Gang has met Robin Hood and they are about to rumble with the vampires. These kids are well prepared though, stakes rigged on the hood of their car, crossbows and even a Gattling-stake Gunn. And they know how to use it as a vampire in mid-flight is dusted with a perfect shot.
The kids win but there are casualties and as the fight breaks up they rush an injured member back to their hideout. Through a maze of back alleys and stairways they arrive at a well guarded basement, but too late as the boy dies.
Angel arrives at Madam Dorian's and shows her a picture of Lenny. She wants nothing to do with vampires but Angel insists and Madam Dorian informs him Lena knows the information he wants and is asked to cooperate.
Back at the hideout Elana, the girl from the ally and her brother Gunn, the leader are discussing his recklessness. She berates him because he 'loves getting the death in.' Another member rushes down the steps to tell them they've found the vampires nest. The three of them head upstairs.
Outside in the alley, Angel has found Lenny. He wants the blackmail pictures but Lenny is more of the warning type than the giving, 'this isn't your turf' but Angel morphs and replies with a threat, "I'm moving in, you bring me what I want," as Gunn watches.
Act II:
Navid's apartment and he's handing over a check to Cordy and Wesley, a big check. Wesley informs him that the case isn't over but Navid assures him that there's more where that came from. He's used to buying friends and influencing people. Cordy could get use to this.
In the alley, Lenny and Angel meet up again, this time he has the pictures. He also brought a friend. Lenny's demon friend attacks and Angel takes a beating. He grabs the pictures and heads off just as the gang arrive but not before Angel gets staked in the shoulder. Angel tries to escape and runs under a garage door and through a warehouse as the kids follow. The warehouse is booby-trapped and Angel makes his way carefully but at pace. He is finally surrounded and Elana is behind him just as a trap misfires sending a metal bolt directly for her. Angel catches it as it pierces his hand to save her. He explains to Gunn they are 'fighting on the same side.' But Gunn only warns Angel not to come back.
Later that day, in the office, Cordy is patching up Angel's wounds as Wesley commends "Nice work." Angel explains that the gang is made up of 16 year old homeless kids leaving 20 minutes away from millionaires. He believes they are over their heads and sends Wesley to find the kids while he looks for the vampire nest.
The nest, and the lead vampire is addressing the other, telling them it was their own fault they lost the fight. They have become lazy and have dropped their guard. Saying so while he dusts his own man to make a 'point'.
At the hideout, Elana tries to convince Gunn they should find Angel as he could be useful.
Angel is at the nest looking around, but not 'up' where a vampire is hiding. He drops down on Angel but he quickly dispatches him and asks where the others are.
On their way to the gangs hideout, Gunn and Elana are working on tools when tear gas canisters come crashing in. Gunn evacuates everyone but then realizes he has just sent them into the arms of the vampires. He runs upstairs just in time to see a van pull up and Elana being grabbed. Gunn jumps on the back of the van as it speeds off and he sees Elana being bitten. A vamp punches out the window and Gunn goes flying off.
Act III:
Cordy and Wesley pull up outside the warehouse in the convertible. Cordy in sunglasses, a flowing scarf and sun hat is in a state of denial. 'She' smells the scent of salt air, the bask of a glorious sun and more money than she can handle. 'He' sees the warehouse's power lines and will tap them for clues.
The gang has re-established a new home. Angel arrives and asks for an invite. Gunn tells him they don't need his advice but Angel offers that 'I can help you.' Gunn tells him that he's on his own and has Angel locked up in an old meat locker.
That night, the gang arrives in the alley outside the vampires nest. Gunn wants 10 minutes to check things out. Inside he quietly searches when he hears a voice, that of Elana. He's discovers she's been turned but she explains how things are now. "I'm faster, stronger, better than ever!" and with a shoves sends him flying across the room.
Act IV:
Angel tries to find his way out of the meat locker.
In the warehouse, Gunn and Elana face off. She taunts him with the things he loved about hunting, that the kill is fun now. She offers him to come to the other side. He's knows what's happening but he can't kill her.
Angel punches at the side boards in hopes of busting out of the meal locker but metal mesh is behind them. Suddenly the door opens as Cordy and Wesley have found him and suggest next time that he use his cell phone. "I'm the boss here, I say when we use the cell phone. People are gonna die and . . . I have to go."
Next door, Elana is reminiscing over their childhood. She almost convinces Gunn that he's falling now and tired of running and being a vampire is the way to win. She morphs and goes to bite him. But Gunn isn't convinced and dusts her. Angel arrives and suggests that they leave just as the gang and the vampires all come bursting in. They face off, the war is set but Angel offers the vampire leader a deal. The vamps leave, they stay out of LA, it's off limits. He offers the kids a truce or they are going to die. They agree, the war has been stopped and everyone walks away.
The next day, Cordy and Wesley are in the park. She's thinking how terrible it is for those kids to live they way they do, giving her a sense of perspective. She wants to prostitute herself to Navid. She could learn to love him, it's not what's on the outside . . . "never mind, I'm fine here."
That night on a rooftop of some warehouse, Angel and Gunn look out over the LA night skyline. He tells Angel he doesn't need a guardian angel. Angel tells him he'll be around, but he also might need Gunn's help sometime. Gunn turns to answer but Angel is gone.
