Episode 21, Season 1 Title: "Blind Date"
Written by: Jeannine Renshaw Directed by: Thomas J. Wright Original Air Date: 16 May 2000
Teaser:
A street peddler is demonstrating his latest toy solders to two little boys. He makes the sale as a young blind woman walks towards him. "Wait miss," he warns as he mores his toys out of the way. She calmly walks on.
Inside a warehouse, Angel is fighting two vampires. The fighting gets a little rough as he stakes one and chains the other up, raising him on a pulley. As the vampire is thrust along the rafters he is impaled by a jetting wooden plank. Thinking his work is done, Angel then hears a moan from somewhere within the warehouse. He reaches a man just as he dies and is then suddenly attacked by a young woman wearing sunglasses. Angel fights back but this woman is different. She's strong and agile and Angel can't even land a punch. As he let's loose of a 'crescent kick' her glasses fall off and Angel can see she is blind as he is easily tossed through a wall. When he gets up, the woman is gone.
Act I:
Angel Investigations. Wesley is researching 'blind demons' in his books while Cordelia searches the web at LAPD Online. Wesley has no luck and is awed that the woman could 'anticipate Angel's actions before he carried them out.' Cordy also awes Wesley as she discovers Vanessa Brewer's arrest record. But the real 'whammy' is not the fact that she is currently on trial for a double homicide but who's defending her.
LA Court House. Lindsey McDonald points out to the jury his client's disability, and states the absurdity that she could be involved in this case. Angel silently walks in the back of the room and quickly throws Vanessa's sunglasses at her back. Instantaneously she reaches up and catches them. A shocked courtroom comes alive as Angel is forced from the courtroom and Lindsey stares after him.
Angel Investigations. Wesley is explaining to Cordy that humans only use a small portion of their electromagnetic spectrum and that Vanessa can perhaps see outside of it. Angel explains that Wolfram and Hart are representing her for free, which indicates that she may be working for them.
Wolfram and Hart. Lindsey and Lee are standing in the hallways as Holland and two other senior lawyers are talking with Vanessa. Lee is amazed that Lindsey got her off. Holland calls Lindsey over and Vanessa takes his hand saying, "Nice to see you again." Holland invites Lindsey into his office. He tells Lindsey that he looks a little stressed and that he's had a rough year. He admits he made some 'bad choices' (i.e sending the slayer, Faith, to assassinate Angel). Holland explains that it's 'harvest time,' where the winners are relieved of the dead weight. He explains that Lindsey won't be happy 'until he finds his place in the scheme of things.' He also tells Lindsey to prepare a strong defense for Vanessa as she'll be doing another job for them, involving some children who pose a threat. Lindsey is obviously disturbed by this.
Angel Investigations. Angel is having a tirade in his office after hearing a hung jury acquitted Vanessa. He argues how he can fight evil when he can't be a part of their justice system. As he insists 'nothing ever changes,' Lindsey walks into the office saying, "I need your help."
Act II:
In Angel's office, Angel tells Lindsey that he believes he's telling the truth because he 'smells a whole lot of human fear.' Lindsey explains that his childhood was different form Angel's whose father was a merchant and had servants, "until you killed them." "Just the one," Angel corrects him. Lindsey grew up dirt poor and lost two siblings to sickness as well as their house when he was seven. Angel is not affected. Lindsey offers him information about Vanessa and the children. Later, Lindsey is showing Angel where the vaults at W&H are located but warns of a Progothian demon who guards it, as well as a Shaman demon who watches the threshold for vampires.
That night, Angel is talking with Gunn on a deserted street as Gunn practices with his 'gattling stake-gun.' Angel needs his help with procuring something and Gunn asks why would he be interested? "Because it will be extremely dangerous." He's in.
Wolfram and Hart. The next morning Lindsey walks through the lobby and puts on his ID tag.
In the sewers far beneath the building, Angel is cutting his way in with an acetylene torch.
Lindsey steps off the elevator at sub-level three where 'priority clearance' is required. He runs into Lilah walking out of the 'back research' room and feigns that he's there to do research. When she has disappeared around the corner, Lindsey walks down the hall leaving his ID for Angel.
Angel, having cut his way through to the floor above, checks his watch and waits.
Lindsey approaches the security office where he asks the guard about the surveillance system he suggested. The Shaman is sitting in the corner and the monitors show the entire office as well as the lobby.
In the lobby, Gunn arrives. He makes a big scene attracting the guards as two of his friends bring in a rolled up carpet and place it down. A vampire emerges from it and chaos ensues.
As the Shaman begins to shriek Lindsey shuts off a monitor with Angel on it and leaves.
Angel has found his way to the vaults. As soon as he steps inside, the demon attacks and Angel blows a powder on him that incapacitates the demon. "Thank you, Wesley." He takes the disks but as he turns to leave one of the many relics on the far wall catches his eye. As he removes it an alarm goes off. He tosses it in his briefcase and just makes it under the descending metal gate. Angel calls Lindsey on his cell phone, "We're done, get out now!" and retreats down the hole into the sewers.
Lindsey is stopped by a 'sweep' of the office due to the alarms. They've brought in mind readers.
Act III:
In the conference room, the mind readers go from person to person and then whisper their findings to Holland. Holland explains to the lawyers that 'dishonesty hurts him' but it will be dealt with quickly and cleanly. Holland stands in front of Lindsey but then moves to Lee who has been 'in secret talks with Kline & Gabler.' As Lee sputters in defense that the mind readers misread him, the guard shoots him in the back of the head, spraying Lindsey with his blood. As the lawyers leave, Holland asks Lindsey to 'hang on.'
Angel Investigations. Angel steps off the elevator to find that Lindsey hasn't returned yet. Angel says he's not going back for him as he hands the computer files to Cordy. Wesley sees the artifact that Angel took and opens it to find an ancient Aramaic scroll. He asks Angel if he had a reason for taking it. "I.. don't really know," he hesitantly replies. Wesley offers to get on with transcribing it as Cordy points out that the disks are encrypted.
Wolfram and Hart. The guards are removing Lee's body and Holland asks Lindsey to sit down. He knows Lindsey has betrayed the firm, stolen files, sided with Angel and worst of all, lied to him. Lindsey replies that he 'just wanted out.' But Holland offers him a few days off to think about his actions and if he discovers a 'sharp, clear sense of self,' he'll do the right thing.
Angel Investigations. Cordy's been the phone to Willow back in Sunnydale for the last hour and forty-five minutes. "Guess what they've been doing?" she asks Wesley. Encrypting computer disks as well. "Oh, no one. Just Wesley," she replies to Willow. "Willow says 'hey.'" A few more minutes of instruction and they are in the back door. They discover that Vanessa lost her sight at 21 by her own hand. She then studied Bai-Jar for five years with the Order of Nan Gin, 'cave dwelling monks' who teach to 'see with the heart and not the mind.' This explains her powers. The files also inform them about the three children (Seers), whose power increases as they mature. Just then Lindsey walks in the office. Angel tells Wesley and Cordy to intercept the children's mentor and he'll bring the kids to them.
At the house where the children are staying, a man is bringing them a snack. Vanessa is there and kills him. Sensing the location of the children, she prepares to kill them as well.
Act IV:
At the house, Angel and Lindsey arrive just in time. The big fight ensues and Lindsey, trying to help, gets knocked around quite a bit. Angel takes his licking as well but then realizes that if he remains still Vanessa can not sense his location. A few vampire speedy moves and Angel sets up for a sequence of counter punches as Lindsey tends to the children. Finally, Angel gets in the killing blow.
Angel Investigations. Angel is silently sitting at his desk in the dark when Wesley enters to inform him that the children are safe with their mentor. Also, he has deciphered a portion of the scroll. It's the Prophecy of Obearsian, which was thought lost. He thinks he also knows why Angel was drawn to it. "There's a whole passage about you." It doesn't mention him by name but it does talk of a vampire with a soul. Angel is not surprised, somehow he knew. Wesley quietly muses, "There is a plan Angel . . . and you have your place in it."
Wolfram and Hart. Lindsey enters the office as Holland is packing his things. Lindsey apologizes as he returns the disks saying he just wanted his own life. But Holland has been watching Lindsey since he was a sophomore at Hastings and sees his potential. He explains that Lindsey stood up to W&H and won, and that takes nerve. They need people like that working for them and offers Lindsey a new job and thia office as he is 'going upstairs.' Lindsey comments that Holland may not know him as well as he thinks. As Holland exits, Lindsey closes the doors behind him and sits down behind the desk. Taking the phone off its receiver he pauses, then turns around and looks out onto the city.
Angel, on his rooftop, also gazes into the night. Two men, two destinies, each having to look inside themselves for the place where they belong.
