Teaser
Hyperion Hotel. Angel is sitting alone in his room drawing Darla's smiling face. Concerned, Wesley comes to check on Angel because he's been spending time alone. Angel keeps his attention on the drawing, trying to make the picture perfect as he tries to ignore Wes' lingering presence. Angel reassures him that everything is alright, but the once watcher doesn't seem convinced. Wes keeps pushing as he stands in the middle of the room, the floor littered with scraps of Angel's previous attempts at drawing Darla, and points out, "Really?" At that, Angel finally raises his head from his drawing and is surprised at the paper all over the floor.
Darla's apartment. Darla is lying on the couch with cuts on her hands and wrists as Lindsey enters the apartment, mirrors broken and glass everywhere. Darla greets him casually, but Lindsey is concerned as he quickly goes to her and asks, "Did something happen?" Blearily, Darla replies: "Oh, god yes, so many things. I remember them all." She is finally feeling her soul. Lindsey berates himself for sending her to Angel too soon as he begins to care for her wounds. Darla tries to get Lindsey to reveal something about his personal life, but he has nothing to share. Reflecting on her own loneliness, she remarks, "You can be with someone for a hundred and fifty years. Think you know 'em. Still doesn't work out." Not only is Darla facing her humanity but the reality that Angel is not Angelus anymore and their relationship is not the same. Lindsey agrees, now they are enemies. Darla smiles bitterly and corrects him, "Oh no, much worse! Now we're soul mates."
Act I
1609. Virginia colony. A blond pale woman is on her death bed with Syphilis. A doctor is bleeding her with leeches but it's not helping. A priest cloaked in heavy monk's clothes walks into the room. The woman refuses the priest, but he stays. He asserts that she cried for him in her delirium during the night and describes her as a "A woman of some property, no husband, no inheritance." She is a sleeper in an era when her occupation was taboo, now in her last moments of life. When they are alone, the priest uncovers his hood and the face of the Master greets her. He had visited her the night before, when she had mistaken him as death, but he explains, "God never did anything for you, but I will." He plunges his vamp face into her neck and Darla is born.
Angel Investigations. Inc. Angel is sitting behind his desk, while Cordy, Wes and Gunn are listening to Angel's new plan for finding Darla. He's still determined to find her but Cordy is against this considering the power Darla has over Angel, not to mention all the trouble she has caused him already. Wes actually agrees! Wes tries to convince Angel that if Darla wanted to be found, well that she would be found. But Angel reminds them that they are an investigative agency and that they should be able to find her because that's what they're good at. Cordy chimes in, "That's what we suck at. Let's face it, unless there's a website called "www.ohbythewaywehavedarlastashedhere.com" we're pretty much out of luck!" Wes can't help but smile. Cordy at her sarcastic best offers another idea: Driving around with the top down while Angel takes big whiffs-since Angel can smell her (after hours of course.) Angel is frustrated at Cordy's sarcasm but Gunn, who's been quiet all this time, offers an idea. Wolfram and Hart must have a place for their clients who come in out of town and need a place to stay. If this is the case then there has to be some kind of record since it has to be written off as an expense. Bingo! Cordy is going to look up the firm's real estate holdings, while Angel offers, "She'd want something with a view . . .Darla always liked something with a view." The crew is off to work on finding Darla again.
1760. London. Angelus dressed in red velvet and sporting long locks is standing before the Master of the Order of Aurelius. Darla is proud of Angelus and tries to impress her sire with her latest boyfriend's killing record. Angelus, however, isn't too impressed with the Master, considering he and his followers live in the sewers, shunning humanity completely. "Darla here tells me you're some sort of Master," comments Angelus with a look of disgust and cockiness. Darla tries to play her lover's cockiness down by explaining that he's young. While the Master champions his plan to destroy humanity, Angelus continues to show disrespect, insulting the Master's looks and lounging in the Master's chair. Angelus isn't too happy about the prospect of looking like the Master, pointy ears, bald head and just plain unkissable face. Tired of Angelus' disrespectful attitude, the Master begins to beat him. Angelus takes the punches, not fighting back, all the while promising to be with Darla forever, promising her everything. "Tell the truth: Who's face do you want to look at for eternity, his or mine?" Darla looks lovingly at Angelus. The Master is positive that she will choose him because he sired her, yet... The Master stops the beating, feeling Darla's sweet smile behind him. "You're leaving with the stallion, aren't you." Angelus is on the ground with a bruised and bleeding face. She helps him up and they leave the sewers. One of the Master's minions tries to stop them, but the Master lets them go, commenting, "They won't last. I give it a century. Tops."
Angel Investigations, Inc. As Wes comes into the office, Angel is looking up Darla's name and discovers that it is an Anglo-Saxon derivation meaning "Dear One" but most interesting of all is that the name did not come into use until about a hundred years after Darla was born. Angel has realizes that he never even knew Darla's real name and that the Master must have named her "Darla." Wes is fearful because of Darla's affect on Angel, not to mention their past together, but Angel wants to find out why Wolfram & Hart brought her back. He questions, "Why like this? Why human?" Wes can only offer that this was the only way that they could control her by bringing her back as human. Also, Wolfram & Hart may have brought her back to distract him and to keep him from accomplishing his mission. Angel thinks about it, "It's working."
Wolfram & Hart. Lindsey brings Darla with him to his office because he is afraid that she'll hurt herself. Offering to bring her some food, he opens the shutters to give her a view. Holland walks in and asks to speak to Lindsey. Out in the hall, Lindsey explains why he brought Darla to the office, but Holland points out that it's not "prudent" to have her there now that "she's made contact." Lyndsey's worried that Darla may be suffering from post trauma. However, Holland is not concerned with that, commenting, "She's cracking up" and quickly adding, "We'll have to accelerate matters." Lindsey doesn't like this at all. Departing, Holland gives him some advice, "Anything with a sharp edge. You may want to remove those items from your office just in case." Lyndsey's blue eyes turn cold as Holland suggests the worst.
Act II
1880. London. Darla, Angel and Drusilla are reflecting on their latest kill, a sailor. Dru sadly realizes, "I'm full and warm, yet all alone." As the trio returns to the streets, Angelus suggests she make herself a playmate. Dru dreamily fantasizes about finding herself a knight just as a blonde-haired poet breaks through the ranks, bumping into Angelus and clenching out through tears and rage, "Watch where you're going!" The three stare at his back as Darla suggests, "Or you could just take the first drooling idiot that comes along." They laugh and leave Dru behind as she stares at the retreating back of the soon to be Spike.
Angel Investigations, Inc. Cordy is giving the 411 on a spot where Darla might be but Angel is unsatisfied because they need to be more positive that this is the place. Cordy explains, "It has a view . .and berber carpeting." Angel begins to walk off until Cordy finally reveals that she posed as a relative looking for an older sister-a much older sister, because their parents are in a coma. Cordy's much improved acting skills convinced the property manager who decided to help out and was even moved to tears. Angel walks to her desk, smiles and rips out the paper with the address written on it, preparing to dash off to find Darla, but Wes has other plans. He offers to go with Gunn and do a little reconnaissance, return and then they can proceed from there. Cordy agrees, "It's probably a good idea because it's 1:00 in the afternoon and that address is in Sun Valley." Angel reluctantly concedes as Wes dashes out in search of Gunn.
Wolfram and Hart. Darla is deep in thought, staring off into the view offered up by Lindsey's office window. Lyndsey enters with lunch in hand and calls her name. She seems dazed with thoughts of her newfound humanity and shares that she cannot recall her name from when she was human the first time. Living so long as a vampire erased her first human life and now she doesn't know what she is. "What did you bring back Lindsey? What am I?" Lindsey sees her pain, but she throws him a curve ball, challenging, "Why haven't you kissed me?" This changes the mood to one of sexual tension between them. Lyndsey's eyes turn intense as he walks up to her, slips his hand to the back of her neck and closes the distance between their lips to zero. He kisses softly, tentatively, once, twice, three, four but then she changes things again, "It's not me you wanna screw . . it's him." Lindsey doesn't stop, and the next kiss turns rough and passionate as they continue kissing, now on top of his desk. Darla's getting a little crazy as she questions again, "What am I?" But Lindsey doesn't care he just wants to keep kissing her. Darla's questioning turns to anger and she strikes out at him by biting his neck, hard. Lindsey pulls away holding his wound. He wants to get close again, but she holds him away. She walks to the large glass windows. Darla is lost, no one can understand her. She rubs her chest; "It's a cancer, this soul!" Lindsey listens to her painful moan, wanting to help her but unable to because he can't understand.
1898. Romania. Angelus is walking aimlessly through the hills of Romania as Darla, Spike and Drusilla pay a visit to the gypsy family who cursed him with a soul. Darla tells the gypsy father "You took him from me. You stole him away. You gave him a soul." But he wants Angelus to pay for what he did. Darla tries to bargain with the gypsy father to reverse the spell or his family will die. Unfortunately, Spike has already snacked upon them in the wagon and Darla has no choice but to exact revenge as Angel begins his painful transformation alone.
Angel Investigations, Inc. Wes and Gunn have returned from their scouting expedition and are showing the video of Darla's destroyed apartment. Angel notes that all of the mirrors are broken because "The weight of her soul. She's feeling it." Angel is now more determined to find her because she may be in trouble but Wes tries to see it another way: this could be another scheme. The phone rings and Cordy answers the phone as Angel and Wes discuss the situation. She repeatedly tries to get Angel to answer the phone, but he barks at her to take a message. Cordy says into the receiver, "Hi Darla, he can't talk right now. He'll call you back when he's found you." Angel quickly catches the phone before she hangs it up. Darla is calling from Lyndsey's office in despair. Angel knows her soul is plaguing her and he handles her carefully trying to be as understanding as possible. Angel is the only one who knows what she is going through and she recognizes this for the first time, "My boy knows." She is terrified of her soul. Lindsey walks in, calling her from the door. Seeing the phone to her ear, he tells her to hang it up. Angel can hear this as well as she whispers, "Angel... help me." She turns around as Lindsey tries to get her to put down the phone. A guard walks in to offer help but Lindsey tells him to leave. As Darla is talking to Lindsey, the phone is resting against her chest and Angel can hear her heartbeat. Angel listens to the sound of her heartbeat, knowing the gift she has been given. He can also hear everything she is saying to Lindsey. Lindsey is trying to convince her that he can help her, but she says, "No you can't. You don't have it in you." Darla has to go to Angel. The guard is persistent, determined not let Darla leave the building. Lindsey loudly orders the guard to leave the office but Darla is spooked and sees this as an opportunity to escape. She hits Lindsey with the phone. Angel hear the fighting, "Darla? Darla?" Then, Angel hears the sound of a gunshot.
Wolfram & Hart. Holland is in his office reviewing the events caught on tape with Lindsey. He is very upset because not only was the guard shot, but Lindsey helped Darla escape as well. Holland is not waiting for an explanation because everything is clear. The guard's death has been handled Wolfram & Hart style, so Lindsey doesn't have to worry about it. He is being taken off the assignment, but now Lindsey is only concerned about Darla and tries to convince Holland that he can find her. Holland calmly informs him that she was caught a few blocks away. The project is being terminated. Lindsey knows what this means, but has no choice than to go home and rest as ordered by Holland. Darla's life is out of his hands now.
Act III
Angel Investigations, Inc. In the lobby of the Hyperion Hotel, Gunn, Wes and Cordy are faced with a determined Angel. He wants to go with the gang to help Darla, but as always Wes intervenes. Angel is aware of the danger, but he has to go to help her because only he knows what she is going through. Angel argues, "And unlike me, maybe she won't have to go through it alone." Cordy can't believe what he's saying, so she quickly jumps in. "You're not alone!" Wes recognizes Angel's point and reminds him that he was alone for over a century without ever seeking redemption. Angel says, "That's right, I sought her." And walks out to help his sire.
1900. China. WIth the Boxer Rebellion, buildings are burning and people are fleeing. Darla is carrying some packages and places them on a table, taking her time. Angel, dressed in old dirty clothes and exhausted from travel comes up behind Darla and grasps her warm face, just recently fed. He asks for Dru and Spike as Darla takes out a knife from a silk sheath near her. She turns and pins Angel to the wall, "I should kill you right now!" She threatens him, but she can't do it. He's back because he wants a second chance. He begs her for an opportunity. He has no place in the world and tries to return to his old self by returning to Darla. She is upset and can still feel his soul and knows that he has been feeding off rats. She is disgusted and spits out, "What do you want?" Angel surprises her, "A second chance." Angel assures her that he will try to be one of them, but Darla knows it impossible because he still has a soul and she argues, "Look at you, I don't know what you are anymore." Angel plays to Darla's yearnings and convinces her with a kiss.
Lindsey is walking through the Wolfram & Hart covered parking lot as he's dialing his cell phone when Angel surprises him. He chokes Lindsey with a hanging black rope to get the location of Darla, but not much is needed since Lindsey was actually dialing Angel's number. Angel isn't convinced, and tightens the rope. Lindsey manages to tell him that Darla is going to get killed. She's been taken to an abandoned bank at Figarro and Ninth. This is the place where the firm takes care of such things. Angel lets him go and Lindsey falls on his car. Angel walks off to save Darla.
1900. China. Angel is walking through the streets in the riots looking for Darla. He walks into an alley, when he discovers a missionary family hiding from the rebellion. The parents, their daughter and a little basket with a baby inside are terrified and Angel can see it in their eyes as they cower against the wall. A man with a sword walks into the alley and Angel punches him knocking him out on the ground. He hears Darla calling him and quickly walks out of the alley and catches up with her before she can spot the family that would make the perfect snack for her. She tries to walk into the alley, "What's over here?" but Angel tells her there is nothing but bodies. She isn't very convinced but she plays along. As they walk back, Spike and Dru come with the news that Spike has just killed a slayer. They are both happy and elated, but Angel only stares solemnly at Spike. Darla notices his reaction, so unlike Angelus. Dru comments that she smells fear and Angel counters, "This whole place reeks of it." As the reunited group walks off, Darla knows Angel has changed. She looks at his back as he walks wondering what has changed.
Act IV
Abandoned bank. Two men throw a frightened Darla out of the back of a van. She falls on the ground and one of the men pulls out a gun.
1900. China. Angel walks into the greeting room of Darla's house. Darla is waiting for him, upset, wondering where he has been. Darla is catching on. Angel points out that he has been feeding, but Darla adds, "On vermin." This thought disgusts her and she proceeds to let him know that she has taken note that he now feeds only on rapists and murders-the evil doers. "You swore to me. You said that if I took you back you'd prove yourself. . . Now's your chance." Darla smiles, and removes a white cloth from a basket on the table between them. Darla uncovers it and it's the baby of the missionary family in the alley. Darla returned to the alley before dawn and the family was still there. Angel stares at the baby in fear. She says, "I won't be made a fool, Angelus." Angel knows he's caught. He apologizes, but she doesn't want his words. She takes a step back from the basket, waiting for Angel to prove himself.
Abandoned bank. Angel drives up just in time to save Darla from death. Angel fights off the men, but not before one of them throws Darla against the wall. She hits hard and passes out. Angel, done with the men, rushes to her side to check on her, "Darla?" She doesn't respond.
Wolfram & Hart. Lindsey is walking to his office as he sees the supposed dead security guard shake hands with Holland and leave. Lindsey walks into his office and Holland follows. He is upset because he was fooled. Holland explains that the crisis had to be real and Lindsey realizes he was left out of loop because there was a bigger plan in mind. Lindsey fears the plan is to have Darla give Angel his perfect moment of happiness, but this is only a reflection to Lyndsey's unfounded jealousy. Holland knows Lindsey is attracted to Darla and so he assures him that there will not be any physical attraction between Angel and Darla. Holland expects Angel to do the only thing that he can do: Save her soul.
Angel Investigations, Inc. Darla is lying on the couch, and as she wakes up the first person she sees is Angel, but she calls him "Angelus." Cordy goes on the defense and sweetly points as only Cordy can, "Around here, it's Angel. Just Angel. Okay?" Angel sees it's going to be difficult with the others around so he asks them to leave. They leave and Angel assures Darla she is not dead. She places her hand over his, "I'm so lucky to have someone who understands. Something you never had." Angel doesn't want her to blame herself, and she reveals that Wolfram & Hart brought her back to get back at him. But Darla wants something from Angel. "You'll make the pain stop, won't you?" But Angel isn't catching on yet, "It takes time" but Darla hints, "It takes moments." She presents her neck to him. Darla does not want to be human. She was a vampire for so long that she forgot what being a human is like. For her, the humanity she feels is alien and impossible for her to handle. Angel tries to push her away but she persists to cling to him. He is astounded at what she is asking him to do, but also, even more so because she is willing to trade what he most wants. She begs Angel to help her get rid of this humanity, "I can't bear this pounding in my chest for another instant." He looks down at her desperation and replies, "It's a gift. To feel that heartbeat, to know really and for once that you're alive " She keeps clinging to him and begs him to "return the favor." Angel stares at Darla with disbelief in his eyes. She steps back seeing this new look in his eyes. Angel can't believe what he heard but he corrects her, "You think you did me a favor? You damned me!" So if he won't turn her, then she asks him to take her out of her misery all together. To this new request, he can only say, "I can't."
1900. China. Angel looks down at the baby and says, "I can't" at what Darla is asking him to do. The price for companionship and a place in the world is higher than what he is willing to pay. He meets Darla's gaze and says, "I can't seem to be what I'm not. I'm sorry." Darla only has three words for him: "You disgust me." Suddenly, he takes the baby out of the basket and crashes through the window. The path to redemption is a lonely one.
Hyperion Hotel Lobby. Angel will not give in to her and she knows this. Darla runs out of the Hyperion Hotel and warns Angel, "Don't look for me again." Dumbfounded, Angel can only stand in the middle of the lobby as history repeats itself.
