Episode 20, Season 2 Title: "Over the Rainbow"
Directed by: Fred Keller Written by: Mere Smith Original AirDate: 8 May 2001
Teaser
At the Caritas, Wesley, Angel and Lorne are searching in vain for Cordy. They quickly realize that their vision girl was sucked into the portal along with Landok. Angel is denial and demands to know from Lorne Cordy’s location.
Meanwhile, Cordy knows she isn’t in L.A. and screams for help, but quickly realizes she doesn’t want to draw attention to herself. In vain, she taps her heels three times, but no go. She spots a large hairy creature, a hell beast as she nicknames it. It breaks into a run and so does Cordy as the chase begins.
Act I
At the Caritas, Angel is hell-bent on saving Cordy and Wes tries to reason with him, but Angel is determined and reads twice from the book, but the portal refuses to open. Wes is relieved that it didn’t work. They decided to return to the hotel to find a way to open another portal.
In the forest, the hell-beast pins her to the ground and begins to lick her face? Trensiduf of the Gathwok Clan, the owner, comes and retrieves his pet beast named Seekul. “You found me a cow!” and to Cordy’s surprise gets roped and tied. He gags his talkative cow and takes her to market.
At the Hyperion, Wes is doing research while Lorne explains that he came to L.A. five years ago through a portal that appeared while he was walking in the forest. He hates Pylea and will never return. He created Caritas in the abandoned building he landed in, creating Caritas in the same place. Lorne paints a dire picture of Pylea. Wes reveals that some areas are filled with psychic energies or ‘hot spots’ and when a portal is created it depletes it of its energy, which explains why Angel couldn’t open a second portal. Most importantly, Wes reveals that when separate entities travel through a dimensional portal they separate, meaning Landok, and Cordy didn’t arrive together, which worries Angel because she is all alone in a strange world. Gunn arrives and Angel gives him the low down, but Gunn’s loss has affected him deeply and counts himself out to the surprise of all present and leaves. Lorne refuses to go, but wants to help and takes off on a lead on how to find another hot spot, while Wes continues to search for a way for several to pass through the portal without melting or splitting.
Cordy is tied and gagged she is displayed in the market square. She is quickly sold for a pig, and the new owner places a collar on her. Cordy is ungagged and she points out, “One pig? One measley pig?” Cordy refuses to follow but she changes her mind after Vakma sends a few shocks of pain with the remote control she holds in her hand. As she races to catch up, a filthy familiar face, wearing a similar collar watches from behind a wagon.
Act II
Gunn is in his truck deciding on whether to stay or help out Cordelia.
Across town, Lorne in cap and dark glasses, visits his friend and fellow visionary, Aggie, who works for a call a psychic phone line. She refuses to reveal the location of a hot spot unless Lorne agrees to return to Pylea as well so that he can have some closure on his issues. She reads him well and knows his “ugly conflict vibes” have everything to do with the portal. He reluctantly agrees.
At the Hyperion, Wes gets closer to finding a way in which all of them can simultaneously travel through the portal. Iron and metal have been mentioned several times in his books. They are interrupted when lawyers from W&H, Gabin Park and his associate, Mr. Hayes, pay Angel a visit. The firm is interested in purchasing the building in six months after the lease is up. With vamp face one, Angel refuses to let them assess the building.
In a Pylean barn, Cordy dressed in a sackcloth is shoveling demon animal manure. She tries to get the collar off but a human voice calls her over to a small hole in a wall and warns her not to try it because her head will implode. Cordy wants to know how to leave, but the girl reveals that no one leaves. Before they could really talk, the girl is found by the constable and is taken away because she was able to disable her collar and ran away from her owner.
At Angel Investigations, the vamp detective is putting all his affairs in order. He leaves instructions to Gunn in a phone message in case they don’t return. Lorne and Angel are waiting for Wes to figure out how to get them safely through the portal. Wes yells, “Eureka!” There’s no stopping them now.
At the market, Cordy follows her master carrying a heavy basket of goods purchased. She has a vision of a Drokken attacking a villager. She falls to the ground and tries to warn them of the Drokken but the locals ignore her warning and surround her accusing her of being a cursed cow.
In front of a movie studio, Wes, Angel and Lorne are in the black convertible ready to travel to Pylea. To their surprise, Gunn jumps into the backseat. Wes holds tightly to the book because it will be critical to their return as he begins to read. The portal opens and Angel drives through it. Unknown to them, the book is left behind on the street.
Act III
The convertible and passengers land safely in the forest. No bodies melted or merged here. Angel immediately freaks out scrambling for a heavy blanket because the suns are shining brightly. But to Angel’s welcoming surprise, he doesn’t burst into flames. Wes concludes that it must be because they are in a different dimension. They search for branches to cover the car.
Cordy is at a medieval style room with villagers as the constable brings news that the body has been ound. A covenant member in a robe reaches for a sharp pointed instrument and moves toward a frightened and helpless Cordy. She must be tested for the curse. Cordy screams.
Angel is floating on air as they use branches to cover up the car, but they discover that the book is missing. The research guru explains that the book perhaps only opens portals to Pylea so the book is not needed in Pylea. They put their bickering aside and march forth towards town to save their vision girl.
On the floor lies Cordy. The tests are complete and the covenant unanimously agrees that “she carries the curse of the sight.” She is dragged away.
The crew arrives into the village and Lorne heads to Blix’s home, one of his childhood friends, while the rest stay hidden because Pyleans are major xenophobics. A few seconds later, Lorne runs out with his ex-best friend chasing after him with an ax yelling, “Traitor!” Wes, Angel and Gunn join Lorne and most of the town joins the chasing. They get surrounded in the Town Square. The odds don’t look so good.
Act IV
Surrounded by half the village, all four decided to fight. Axes, punches, sticks and blows are flying everywhere and Wes yells, “I think we’re winning!” He spoke too soon and moments later all four are tied up in the middle of the town. Constable Narwek drops by to take Lorne away for interrogation, fraternizing with cows isn’t a popular sport in Pylea and neither is abandoning your life-giver. The others are taken to the castle dungeon to await their judgement by the Royal Highness for their crime of assaulting their betters.
The covenant agrees that Cordy is indeed cursed, so “measures must be taken, blood must be spilled.” Things look dire for our Cordy.
At the dungeon, Gunn is still confident they’ll succeed as the others are bummed about their state of affairs. Angel reveals their dungeon isn’t as bad as the Tower of London. With his vampire ears, Angel hears two men down the hall talk about Cordy. He catches a few words, “a girl with visions” “a big covenant” “ a curse” “testing the girl for sight” and “she screamed.” Their faces say it all. The guards come to take them away for their sentencing.
Outside the sentencing room, our heroes meet up with Lorne, also in shackles. Angel reveals their lead and determines that they have to escape soon. Constable Narwek is positive that all four will die and gives orders to have their bodies displayed at the Town Square as an example. Angel knows this is their chance to escape and as they enter the room he attacks the guard. The shuffle starts but then a familiar voice clears its throat stopping the would-be fight. Cordy? She sits on a throne dressed in a royal blue two piece glimmering outfit as she eats fruit offered by a servant. The shackled Pylean male cows are stunned. Her Royal Highness is smiling from ear to ear. Pylea must be growing on our Dorothy.
