Plot When a famous dance troupe comes to LA, Angel is thrilled. He drags Gunn, Fred, Cordy and Wes along for a night of ballet. Unfortunately, supernatural forces are afoot at the theater. Meanwhile, Angel is scared to admit his real feelings for Cordy. Wes & Gunn both continue to fall for Fred and she finally kisses one of them.
Trivia * Joss Whedon had imagined a scene in the dressing room, where a mirror showing Cordelia and Angel standing behind her would be seen. Ross Berryman had to remind him that Angel was a vampire and could not have a reflection. * According to DVD commentary, when Summer Glau finished her four-page monologue she received a standing ovation from the crew and the extras remaining on set from the theater scene. This eventually led to someone suggesting that Joss have her read for the role of River Tam on his new series, 'Firefly'.

In his office at Angel Investigations, Wesley stares dreamingly into the etching of Sorialus, the Ravager demon as he speaks longingly, not of the Ravager but of Fred. Cordelia asks Wes if he's going to ask her out while they reminisce of the old days and swap sympathies of love lackage, although Dennis is good with the loofah. Angel appears, all smiles, which scares Cordy, and the reason? "We are stepping out."
Walking thru the gate outside the Hyperion, Fred and Gunn return from a bountiful breakfast. Gunn can't imagine where Fred shovels all the food into the stick-figure body of hers, but he's quick to state that she's gorgeous.
Inside, Gunn is psyched that Angel has gotten the tickets but wait, they aren't for Mahta Hari who he once saw at the Troubadour, no, Angel swapped the magic beans for Blinnikov's World Ballet Corps' one-night-only performance of Giselle. Angel remembers seeing it in 1890 and he cried like a baby despite being evil. Gunn is not happy to see men in tights with their packages jumping up and down as he and Angel have once again 'lost the trust'.
At the theatre, the manager and the troupe director review the stage set. All L.A. is buzzing about the performance and the director comments; "It will be a performance of a lifetime." High above on the catwalk a mysterious gloved hand appears on the rail and a maniacal giggle is heard.
Act I
At an exclusive boutique, Cordelia and Fred are combing through the evening gowns trying to find the perfect one to match the tuxedos of their dates. Cordy introduces Fred to the wear-it-once-and-return-it ritual of the modern girl on a tight budget. Since shopping and girl talk go together, Fred asks Cordy about her nameless crush and our vision girl advises that he is definitely interested and this makes Fred gush with emotion as she reminds Cordy that she must also look extra special for Angel.
Later that evening in the kitchen of the Hyperion, Lorne is cleaning up Conner's burpage from Angel's tuxedo. The little nipper is fast asleep but unknown to Angel, Lorne "read" him while Angel sang him an Irish lullaby. The anagogic Uncle knows Angel's true feelings for Cordelia and reintroduces him to the term "Kyrumption" when speaking of the two champions. Angel doesn't think he has anything to offer her but before he can say more, Cordy stands on the threshold decked out in an upswept do and a body-hugging evening gown with a plunging neckline. Both males are riveted to her beauty as she swankers over to Angel, fixes his necktie and suggests that they forget their "dreary selves" and for once simple enjoy an evening at the ballet.
Downstairs, Fred anxiously awaits for Gunn to appear, a bit shy in his tux. Fred can't help but smile at his handsomeness and neither can he as our Fred is dressed in a long red-velvet gown and the pile of curls a' top her head make her quiet a vision. Wesley appears equally handsome in his own tux and attentively lays Fred's beaded shawl over her slim shoulders as Angel and Cordy walk down the stairs arm in arm. Wes assists Cordy with her shawl and she whispers, "The iron is hot!" Uncle Lorne stays behind with Conner as the elegantly dressed group leaves for a much-deserved demon-fighting free night at the ballet.
Our party arrives at the beautiful theatre and seat themselves a bit a way from the stage. Finding five seats together was difficult for Angel, not like the old days when a box seat was just a meal away. Fred sits between Wes and Gunn, while above them is Cordy and Angel. The program starts and the dancers begin their graceful movements with the music. Seconds later, Cordy is snoring rhythmically on Angel's shoulder, while Gunn, to his surprise is enraptured by the athleticism and elegance of the ballet. Angel gets the "something's up" face as he finds a strange familiarity with the principal dancers.
Intermission comes and the audience claps, startling Cordy and Gunn yells, "Bravo!" in appreciation. Ballet has found a new devotee. The group returns to the lobby where Angel reveals that the ballet company is the exact one he saw perform in the previous century-same exact dancers-quiet impossible! The crew's relaxing evening has hit a glitch that must be fixed. The ever-charming Cordy ties a bow on the news, "Wow, it's a puzzler! Are there snacks?"
Act II
In the lobby, the crew discusses a few possible explanations and Angel rules out vampires since he would have sensed that and decides to go back stage. The lights flash signaling the audience to return to their seats but Cordy goes with Angel, since we all know just how much she's been enjoying the ballet.
At the backstage entrance, a burly security guard is protecting the door. Cordy suggests a pretty-girl distraction but Angel wants to get to the punching part. They settle on a third alternative: bribe the guard. The guard refuses to be bribed and so Angel sneaks in a punch and knocks him out. They enter and immediately find themselves in a long hall that trails as far as the eye can see. Angel thinks it might be a spell or time flux and both agree to leave but they find the door has disappeared and replaced by an equally long hall.
The ballet continues above and proves enjoyable for our three friends; however, in the box above the stage wing a dark bearded man with passionate eyes watches every movement of the prima ballerina amidst deep satisfaction.
In the magical backstage area, Cordelia and Angel are drawn to the prima ballerina's dressing room. Cordy sits in front of her mirror and picks up a cross necklace but Cordy seems distracted and reveals, "She would wait for him here." Both are feeling warm, knowing something happened in the room. They begin to act strangely and passionately experience a scene that happened over a century ago. Cordy sighs, "I'm only alive when you're inside me," and kisses Angel.
Act III
The beautiful ballerina continues her hypnotic dance as the music rises, equally matched by the passion rising between Angel and Cordy but the cross in her hand touches his cheek, burning, and helps him snap out of the spell. They apologize and agree to quickly leave, but this proves difficult and they share caresses and kisses until they are through the door. Angel explains the spirits' energy is trapped in time and took them over inside the room. Cordy is relieved, "It's a good thing it wears off right away." Maybe for Cordy, but Angel takes off his jacket and folds it over his arm, placing it strategically in front of him with a sheepish look on his face.
At the Hyperion, Uncle Lorne sets down Conner in his crib and sits to read the newspaper not bothered that he didn't get invited to the ballet. Suddenly he senses something amiss and grabs an axe. He opens the bedroom door and exclaims to his shock, "Oh, my God!"
In the endless hallway, Cordy reflects on their conversation to try to recreate what happened so long ago. They know the two people were secret lovers afraid of something, which could be the very same thing keeping these two modern supernatural sleuths trapped in the maze. Their only hope is to play out the scene in the dressing room until the end. Angel is hesitant, but Cordy pulls out the cross and assures him she'll use it.
Back in the balcony, Wesley's hand slowly trails from his lap to Fred's hand while to the left is Gunn also trying to do the same thing! Before any hands can reach their target, Fred startles them both when she remembers that Angel and Cordy have taken too long.
Down in the dressing room, Angel and Cordy stoically play out the beginning of the scene and almost give up when suddenly Cordy kisses our vamp with a soul in such a passionate embrace that she drops the cross.
Meanwhile, Wesley, Fred and Gunn follow the trail of the unconscious security guard to find Angel and Cordy. Unknown to them, maniacal laughter echoes as the white-gloved minions watch them.
Up in a theatre box, the dark-bearded man is informed by his lackeys, but he quickly orders them away, completely transfixed with his ballerina.
The secret lovers continue their passionate embrace on the settee. Cordy, under the spirit's control confesses, "Stefan, his powers are unnatural." Angel refuses to be afraid and invites his love to leave with him, but the ballerina refuses. Their passion grows.
Outside, the lonesome three are lost in the maze, but can hear the sounds of the lovers.
Inside the dressing room, the lovemaking progresses and Angel removes her dress, following with a trail of kisses, lower and lower. Suddenly, the white-gloved minions interrupt and we see the twisted smile of Comedy in a white face as he attacks Angel, breaking the spirits' hold. Angel punches him and then flies over the settee to fight the Tragedy demon.
In the hall, the rest of the crew recognize the familiar sounds of fighting but are ambushed by the Comedy/Tragedy demons. As Gunn is stabbed by one of them, Fred screams, "Charles!"
Act IV
Fighting continues; Fred goes into action with a bucket and tosses a sword to Wesley, who makes good use of it but Gunn collapses on the floor.
Likewise, in the dressing room, Cordy makes use of her training skills to stave off a minion with a sword. She yells for help but Angel is stabbed with a knife. He quickly pulls it out and throws into the neck of Cordy's offender, while simultaneously driving a sword through his own opponent.
Wesley finishes off his minion while Fred tends to Gunn in another part of the magical backstage. She cries at the thought of losing him and Gunn comforts her, realizes Fred truly cares for him. They share a kiss, but behind them Wesley walks in on the scene and his hopes are finally dashed.
Wesley walks away and falls onto his knees as he hits a hotspot. His face changes, he is no longer Wes but someone from the past who was part of the secret lover's story.
Once again we see the bearded man in the theatre box with a medallion around his neck, engrossed in the ballet.
Angel and Cordy join Fred and Gunn and tell them what they have pieced together: Count Kurskov, who was the director of the company, was in love with the ballerina, but she had a secret lover. Wes returns and reveals that Count Kurskov was actually a wizard who was obsessed with the ballerina and when he found her with the other man he pulled her out of time and made her dance forever. They can break the spell by overloading Kurskov's energy and destroy power source. Wes asks Angel to go find Kurskov as the minions multiple and the crew arm themselves for the attack.
Angel jumps through a break in one of the temporal folds and finds the ballerina waiting in the wings for her turn to dance. She's been performing the same piece for over a century with the exact movements and regrets not taking Stefan's offer to escape. She begs for Angel's help.
In the hall, the crew is fighting off dozens of the Count's Comedy/Tragedy demons.
In the wings, Angel tells the ballerina that to break the cycle she must change the dance. She steps onto the stage refusing to be under the Count's spell any longer. This makes the Kurskov rise in anger and Angel quickly jumps to his box and destroys his medallion-the source of his power. This breaks the time shift, the minions disappear and the ballerina curtsies one final time to Angel as she disappears as well.
At the Hyperion, Wesley cleans Gunn's wound as Fred stands near, making Gunn's pain disappear as he matches gazes with his girl. Angel finds Cordy dusting off her dress, hoping she can still return it. He feels rather awkward and is about to confess his feelings when Cordy shrieks, "Groo!" Her Groosalugg from Pylea enters and takes her into his strong Champion arms. Lorne comes downstairs to inform them all that Groo got deposed after everyone in Pyle became free and established a "People's Republic." He's returned for his true love. Angel leaves to go upstairs and check on a sleeping Conner. Fred remarks to Wes, "I thought for sure she was meant to be with Angel. I guess you never can predict those things, you know?" Wesley agrees as he sighs and stares at Fred. Love is a funny thing.
