Episode 8, Season 4 Title: "Habeas Corpses"
Written by: Steve DeKnight Directed by: Vern Gillum Original Air Date: 15 January 2003
Teaser:
Across from Connor's abandoned warehouse, Angel looks down on Cordelia and his son sharing a bed and so much more as the fire continues to rain on Los Angeles. Angel breaks down the door to a nearby storage room and we only hear the sound of things crashing and smashing against the wall amidst Angel's grunts to dull his pain.
Act I:
Back at the Hyperion, Fred has finally returned home and as she listens to news updates on the radio with a worried face Gunn, Wesley and Lorne return as well. The three heroes are severely beaten, not just physically but morally. There's not time to update Fred but the tension between Wes and Gunn is evident when they disagree on what to do next. Lorne tells Fred that what he saw when he read Cordelia is exactly what they are up against. Angel returns shortly and when Fred inquires about Connor and Cordelia, Angel only replies, "They're fine" as he quietly walks upstairs without another word to his crew. Wes figures no one likes to be defeated regardless of the circumstances.
At the warehouse the next morning, Cordelia awakes before her younger partner and she realizes the morning has changed things between them. Connor wakes up with a smile and puppy love eyes towards Cordy but they quickly turn to anger when she decides that the night cannot repeat itself. He blames himself for bringing the apocalypse despite Cordy's belief he has nothing to do with The Beast, still he storms off.
Across town at Wesley's apartment, Lilah frantically knocks and is relieved to find that Wes is still alive. The night's supernatural pyrotechnics have brought the possibility of an apocalypse and Wes has decided to finally choose sides, which also includes breaking up with Lilah. She is angry and counters Wesley's choice by stating there is much gray to his black and white decision but reveals that while Wes sides with good; his crush prefers black and walks out.
Back at the Hyperion, Gunn and Fred are researching The Beast but find no trace of it in their books or databases, strange. Cordy arrives and asks for Angel's whereabouts. He's hibernating in his cage, a.k.a. office, and brooding as usual.
Inside his office, Cordelia wants to talk about Connor but Angel reveals he 'already knows'. Although he means about what he witnessed the night before, she means The Beast rising in the exact spot where Connor was born. Angel realizes his mistake but keeps quiet and agrees that Connor is not connected to The Beast but Cordy points out that Connor does believe it and Angel realizes his son does rash things.
At Wolfram & Hart, Lilah is in her office talking on the phone to one of her minions who is trying to find The Beast. Gavin is by her side with a report on The Beast but he is dismayed when she reveals that the Senior Partners want them to strike up a deal with it. The Beast might speed up the apocalypse and save them some money. Gavin leaves but is forced back inside when Connor arrives. Angel's son is there to find out what he is and Lilah is more than willing to open him up to find out-literally. She triggers a silent alarm but Connor easily fights off the two men that attack him and slams Lilah against the wall. He shares that he might be connected with The Beast. She gets the point and decides to share Gavin's report with him just when the lights go out, and Connor knows The Beast has arrived.
Act II:
Still in Lilah's office, they discover the phones are out and Gavin uses a radio of the unconscious security guard to call the front desk but they hear only screams of The Beast's victims. Connor finds a sword and leaves to face it while Lilah orders Gavin to check things out. Stay with her or go out where he can die? The decision is easy and he leaves. Lilah takes out a handgun and steps out too.
Downstairs, The Beast is killing everyone that steps in its path. Wolfram & Hart employees are strewn across the floor, all dead. He pauses to survey his destruction as he holds in his hand a decapitated head of an unlucky employee [see Fun Note in the episode Review] and then continues on his way up the floors.
Throughout the building, employees are running, attempting to get away and amid them is Connor searching with Lilah by his side but she quickly flees when she realizes Connor wants to find The Beast.
As employees flee through the stairs, The Beast comes upon some of them as he persists to sweep through the floors, continuing his death rampage. The Beast finds Gavin in a janitorial closet and snaps his neck. Gavin falls to the floor dead.
On the third floor, Connor continues his search making his way around the dead. He hears shots fired and follows them to a conference room to find Lilah fighting off The Beast with her gun. It grabs her and punctures her stomach with his claw. Connors surprises him with a blow from his sword but it breaks. The Beast calls him by name, "Connor!" and then easily sends Connor flying into a concrete column as debris covers him.
In the halls of Wolfram & Hart, Lilah stumbles to get away and Wesley finds her just as the building is shutting down, a security precaution in case they are attacked. The Beast finds them and Wes quickly carries her out. She leads him to a utility closet on the 3rd floor where a secret hatch is located giving access to the L.A. sewer tunnels. When they reach it Wesley sees Gavin dead by the door. The Beast is close behind them and they quickly pull a lever to reveal the secret hatch and they disappear just in time as The Beast finds the janitorial room empty.
In the sewers below W&H, Wesley and Lilah are relived to be out of the building. He advises her to disappear fast, leave L.A. never to return and she informs him that Connor is trapped inside the third floor conference room. They each go their separate ways.
At the Hyperion, Fred, Gunn, Lorne, Angel and Cordy are still researching The Beast but with no results. Gunn points out that Caritas had a portal and Lorne adds the entire block is an inter-dimensional hotspot. Wes enters with news of The Beast's location and of Connor. Angel is determined to get him out of W&H but Wes warns it will not be an easy task.
Inside the locked down Wolfram & Hart building, Connor walks over Gavin's body, but unknown to him, Gavin's eyes snap open.
Act III:
At the Hyperion, the crew is preparing for battle. Fred is impressed that Wes had an "inside man" but for him it's just part of the job. Lorne volunteers to 'mind the store' as they collect their weapons and Angel's plan is to get Connor out and if The Beast sees them, to run. Angel makes Cordy stay with Lorne stressing the danger but calls Fred to join them.
In the sewers, Wesley leads the crew back to the exit that is now their only way inside. Gunn gives Wes some heat about the accuracy of the entrance and Angel has had enough. He gives them a warning to put their angst aside and focus. Angel gets a rope and surprises his friends with his super-vamp powers when he leaps and crawls up the vent-like passage to drops down the rope for the rest of them to climb up.
The crew finds wall to wall destruction inside the building with the floors layered with the dead. Since the electricity is out, they take the stairs to the 3rd floor. Angel advises them to be quick and quiet. Unknown to them, a victim on the stairs opens her eyes.
Once on the third floor, they pass the janitorial room and Wes notices that Gavin's body is gone. They find the conference room and quickly move to dig through the ruble believing Connor could be under it but find otherwise. The crew decides to split up and sweep each floor and meet up top.
On the 7th floor, Angel senses that something is moving around. Connor jumps his father and Angel slams him against the wall in defense. He hugs his son, relieved that he is alive. Connor is determined to kill The Beast but Angel convinces him otherwise because it is too strong and not Connor's fault. Zombie-Gavin attacks Angel but he easily fights it off. Angel explains about zombies to Connor as the dead begin to rise. They head out to find the rest of their crew.
On a different floor, Fred, Wes and Gunn make their sweep and Wes notices that another body has gone missing. Gunn is attacked by a zombie that tries to bite him and they begin to fight off the dead. They quickly hide in a room, locking the door.
Act IV:
Fred, Gunn and Wesley are not safe for long as the zombies break through the entrance. Fred breaks open another door and she with Wes escape but Gunn is left behind fighting off the zombies.
On the same floor, Angel gives Connor tips on how to kill the zombies; they can be defeated easily 'unless there are hundreds of them', like the mass that is heading towards them.
In a nearby room, Wes reinforces the door with a table and he and Fred try to continue their escape through another doorway but find more zombies waiting for them. Gunn makes his way inside and a second later Angel and Connor break into the same room as they quickly brainstorm for a way out. Angel offers the 'white room' as their only form of escaping the building because the third floor access is too far away. The white room contains a very powerful, ancient evil that enjoys dressing like a little girl. They need to get to the elevator and some technical wiring help from Fred.
The way is cleared for Fred to reach the elevator and get it functioning as the rest fight off the zombies. Fred succeeds and they all jump in as Angel uses his photographic memory to punch the right combination of numbers, but his first try doesn't work. He tries again as Gunn takes Gavin out of his misery by decapitating him. The second attempt works and the elevator doors quickly close and the secret button appears. Angel presses it and takes them on their way; within seconds the crew is covered in a white fluorescent light.
Suddenly, they find themselves in the white room but are met with a frightening sight. A few feet away, the little girl is lying on the floor helpless as The Beast drains her body. Weakly, she shares, "The answer is among you." The Beast finishes with her and walks toward our heroes that are bracing for an attack. The little girl raises her hand and mumbles some words as they disappear.
Seconds later, the entire crew reappear in the lobby of the Hyperion. Lorne is surprised by their appearance and takes a second look at the drink in his hand. Cordy lays down her research book and hugs Connor, happy that he is safe. Angel sees their reunion and steps inside his office. Gunn and Wes realize that The Beast is not an ordinary foe with typical powers if it can overcome and drain the ancient evil little girl. They are numb with the knowledge that they might not be able to defeat this new evil without extreme power and tragic consequences. More help is needed.
Inside the main office Cordy, glad that at least everyone is safe, tries to talk to Angel but his anger finally shows through and he orders, "Take your new boyfriend and get the hell out of here!" He storms out of the office and Cordy quickly realizes that there was only one way that Angel could possibly know as she whispers, "Oh! God!"
