Episode 9, Season 4 Title: "Long Day's Journey"
Written by: Terrence O'Hara Directed by: Mere Smith Original Air Date: 22 January 2003
Teaser:
In his bedroom, Angel is working on a sketch of the Beast but is interrupted by Lorne delivering a glass full of blood. The crooner gets after Angel for working alone upstairs while everyone is downstairs working together. Angel is frustrated that they have no answers, especially as to why the Beast shows up around Connor all the time. Lorne reveals he knows about Connor and Cordys recent intimacy, and leaves Angel with a thought: Theres other fish in the sea.
In an oil field, Gwen is meeting with a potential client, a Mr. Ashet dressed in traditional African clothing, who wishes to hire her to collect some powerful protective amulets. The recent strange events have made her decide to take a vacation to Tahiti and therefore cannot fulfill her clients wishes. He understands but both are surprised when behind them, the Beasts claw pummels through Mr. Ashets chest and the other claw sends Gwen across the field. Light emanates from Mr. Ashets chest as she witnesses the Beast take a box from inside her clients body. Before she can fight back, the Beast disappears.
Act I:
In the abandoned warehouse, Connor keeps watch by the window, while Cordy is sleeping on the floor. She awakes to the sounds of sirens, now a common occurrence throughout the city. Connor insists on returning to the hotel but thinks no one wants him there, including Cordy, because he is connected to the Beast somehow. Cordy is forced to reveal that Angel knows about their intimacy, which is the true reason why he cannot visit the hotel. Suddenly, Cordy has a short vision of the Beast and quickly leaves to see Angel without Connor.
At the Hyperion, Gunn, Fred and Wesley are researching the Beast, still nothing has come up but Gunn focuses on the evil little girls message. Wes has found out that without the child, Wolfram & Hart is cut off from the Senior Partners. From the book Rhinehardts Companion, he discovered that her true name is Mesektet, one of five powerful beings connected to an embodiment of the ancient god Ra. Together, these five totems make up an order called the Ra-tet and the purpose of their existence is only known to themselves. Gunn doesnt like the little nuances and smiles between Wes and Fred, two research-oriented minds. Lorne arrives with news that a powerful female white shaman has died at the hand of the Beast who tore out her heart. Can the deaths be coincidences or a pattern? Fred uses her computer to find out that the shaman was named Maat – another member of the Ra-tet. Their speculation is interrupted by Cordy, who drops in to visit Angel.
Upstairs, Angel is still researching. Cordy knocks and lets herself in despite Angels unwelcoming words. He is obviously upset at her presence but she offers that Connor still believes he is connected to the Beast. Angel finally reacts against her actions that hurt him deeply and Cordy orders him to, Get over it! This only upsets Angel more and Cordy tries to comfort him by touching his face but he stops her hand in mid-air. She reasons that there are more important events and people at stake and implores him to move on, since people need him. Cordy reveals that she's had a vision, which seems to calm Angel down and refocus his attention. The vision was different from the others in that it felt like she was inside the person that the Beast was speaking to but she couldnt hear anything, only see it. The vision doesnt really give them anything to work on but Cordy is hopeful that the Powers That Be might be generous enough to give her another one. She leaves and reminds him that he is the leader.
Downstairs everyone has gathered to hear Angels pep talk, which he hopes will motivate his crew but they recognize that they have nothing on the Beast. Just after Gunn points out they need a new lead, Gwen walks through the door and Cordys female radar goes way up. Gwen comes with news of the death of her client at the hand of a big demon with a head made of rock. This news catches their attention immediately and Freds description of a totem made of light rings true with Gwen. A pattern has emerged and of the remaining two totems, Manjet was last seen 2 years ago in Belize and Semkhet is a cat-like creature that lives in a cave in Death Valley. Angel quickly calls Gwen to travel with him to Death Valley to protect the precious totem. This does not sit well with Cordy.
A four-hour car trip later, Gwen and Angel are climbing down some rocks to reach a cave in Death Valley. She slips but Angel catches her and both get a little too close. A noise calls them back to their purpose and they discover their totem dead, ripped to shreds. Angel wonders out loud why the Beast is killing the totems. Both are surprised by a man dressed in a hat and a Hawaiian shirt replying to his question, I know why. Hes going to turn out the sun.
Act II:
In the cave, the man introduces himself as Manjet, Sacred Guardian of the Shen, Keeper of the Maat and Devotee Light, but he prefers Manny. He returned from Belize when he heard his evil sister was killed and he explains that the Beast wants to blot out the sun permanently, which requires a ritual, props and chanting. The ultimate purpose is to turn Los Angeles and eventually the entire world into a demon playground beneath permanent darkness. Manny has given up and wants to spend his remaining hours with his friends at The Pink Pony Lounge and offers to buy Angel a lap dance. Angel convinces him that they can protect him and they take all return to the Hyperion.
At the Hyperion, Angel and Gwen arrive with Manny and update the crew on Semkhets death. They brainstorm on what to do next and Gwen offers an idea of her own.
Moments later, the crew with Manny in tow, are climbing the stairs of an abandoned building. Gwen opens a steel door to reveal a large, surprisingly elegant room. Angel informs Cordy that he returned the Axis of Pythia worth 33 million dollars to Gwen after he finished with it. Gwen leads them to the study, where she opens another steel door to reveal a small room, surrounded by 12 inch steel thick walls equipped with its own ventilation system. They decide to pair up and take guard duty in four hour shifts. Before the door is locked, Manjet wonders if Skinomax is available in the little panic room. Later, in the study, Gwen reveals her origins to a distracted Gunn. She apologizes for killing him but remarks that it is Wesley that is bothering him, not her. This insight catched Gunn off guard and before he can explain more Angel and Cordy arrive to trade guard duty. Angel and Cordy settle in with their hot tea and cup of blood, respectively, and decide it better not to talk.
A while later, Gwen and Gunn return and find Angel and Cordy asleep. The two are shaken awake and the four quickly check on Manny. They open the door and Angel remarks, They got him. Cordy looks at the blood splattered walls, Oh, you think?
Act III:
In the study, the crew quickly theorizes on what happened and on what the Beast wanted from Manny. Gwen points out that Manny claimed to be an orb keeper. Angel figures out that the Beast is taking something out of the totems and Gwen finally comes clean that she saw the Beast take a box out of her client. Cordy sarcastically points out the impossibility of the Beast killing Manny in their very presence, in addition to spiking their drinks and walking across the study unheard and unseen. Her suspicion makes sense and Gunn reminds them of the evil little girls message and their thoughts turn to Connor. Gwen shares that she has every room wired with security cameras and goes to the video room, while Angel asks Gunn to call the others and inform them of the recent events.
Inside the video room, Gwen discovers the tapes are blank and decides to check out the system log. Behind her, Cordy urges Angel to talk to Connor but the father believes his son couldn't have committed such a crime because of the Beast connection. Gwen tells them the blackout only occurred in their block ten minutes before their watch, which means it was inside job. Angel defends Gwen from Cordys sarcastic remarks.
At the Hyperion, the crew returns and Lorne informs them that the ritual requires three pieces taken from the totems to be assembled which will create a big old light switch. Gwen offers to melt the pieces to slow him down while Cordy reminds them they do not know where the ritual will be performed. Wes and Fred add that perhaps they can use a portal to finally defeat him since conventional methods have not worked. Gunn is upset and steps aside but Fred offers that they felt it was their only option. Suddenly, Cordy has another vision but it is a continuation of the first one. This time she sees a massacre and realizes that the person she was inside of felt very familiar. Angel figures it must be Connor because of their connections and they quickly move out.
At the warehouse, Connor is reading on his bed when there is a knock on the door. He opens the door and is greeted by the horned demon, Hello, Connor.
