Episode 10, Season 4 Title: "Awakening"
Written by: David Fury & Steven S. DeKnight Directed by: James A. Contner Original Air Date: 29 January 2003
Teaser:
Throughout the city of Los Angeles, citizens are experiencing a strange new reality: The sun has darkened overhead leaving them covered with night.
Voiceover of a news anchor: Officials from the National Weather Service remained baffled as to the cause of this strange phenomenon. All thats being reported at this mid afternoon hour is what meteorologists are calling, a localized abnormality, confirming earlier reports that outlying areas remain unaffected, while the sun over Los Angeles has, for all intents and purposes been blotted out from the sky.
Inside the Hyperion, the crew listens to the news report. Gunn points out that evil activity will be rising soon, while Fred is frustrated over her inability to decipher anything and misses Wesley, specifically his expertise. We find out that Wes and Gwen disappeared after their final battle with The Beast. They see that Angel is singing to Lorne through the main office window. Gunn wants to bring back Angelus but Cordy retells the specifics of the curse and the difficulty in recreating that perfect true happiness.
Inside the main office, Angel is disappointed to find that Lorne cannot find out anything about Angelus and The Beast. His choice of The Night the Lights went out In Georgia, may have thrown Lorne a bit but absolutely nothing could be read. Angel is surprised that he can recall every death at Angelus hand but not the Beast. Its clear that whatever history Angelus has with The Beast, it is buried deep in Angelus. Angel has no desire to bring Angelus back.
Inside a dark lit room, a shaman works a ritual while outside sounds of fighting can be heard. Suddenly, a man is thrown inside and Wes steps through the door, Rumor has it you posses certain skills I require. I need a soul extracted.
Act I:
In the lobby, the crew gathers and Angel gives them the bad news. Fred figures that without the orb swallowed by the Beast, they cannot bring back the sun. Connor blames his father for everything that has gone bad, especially about Cordy and considers Angel a puppet of the Beast. Angel advises him to, Get over it. Before things get any worse, Wes arrives and introduced, Wo-Pang, the shaman with special skills. Fred takes the visitor to the kitchen to brew him some orange zinger tea.
Meanwhile, Angel takes Wes into the main office and is angered that Wes brought a dark mystic into their midst, especially one that can extract souls. Things are at their worst and having Angelus free will only be a mistake. Wes is confident that they will be careful with the goal of obtaining what Angelus knows about the Beast. There is no arguing with Angel and he orders that Wes take the dark shaman away. Angel walks out into the courtyard.
In the courtyard, Angel is having a moment alone, when Cordy joins him to let him know that she understands his decision about not bringing back Angelus. Angel is preoccupied with the thought that the Beast might be using him and realizes if it is true, that he is already a danger to all those around him. Suddenly, Angel mechanically walks back inside.
In the lobby, Angel orders a steel-reinforced cage be made, while he makes some phone calls. Wes realizes he has decided to bring back Angelus. The cage is for Angel.
In the basement of the Hyperion, Wesley adds the finished touches to the cage with a blow torch and Angel inspects it carefully. Inside it, Lorne secures the straps to the steel table. The cage is ready and so is Angel for the ritual. Lorne prefers to stay away during the ritual and Angel asks that Cordy stay away too. He points out to Connor that Angelus is exactly what he was brought up to hate and no matter what happens-he, Angel, loves him. Most importantly, he asks Connor to protect everyone from Angelus.
A few minutes later, Angel is strapped onto the table by Wes and Gunn. Wo-Pang takes out a glass receptacle, called the Muo-Ping, in which to store the soul and places it on a table outside the cage. Connor watches as the mystic is locked inside the cage with Angel and Gunn adds an extra lock at the mystics request. They nervously stand by the cage as the ritual begins. The mystics eyes turn red and he bends to Angels ear, Time to say good-bye as he takes out a large knife and attempts to kill Angel.
Act II:
In the cage, Angel breaks one hand free and stays the knife near his heart as Gunn tries to unlock the cage. The shaman reveals, I serve the Awakening One. The cage is opened and a fight ensues, during which the Muo-Ping breaks. The mystic is quickly cornered but before they can find out anything about the Beasts desire to kill Angel, he plunges a knife into this chest. Gunn inspects the dead shaman and finds the body covered in tattooed script.
Minutes later, Fred and Lorne have joined them as Wesley discovers the tattoos are the recorded history of the Kun-Sun-Dai, acolytes of The Beast. Near the dead-mystics lower back, Wes discovers that the Bosh Mad, opposers of the awakening, was defeated by the acolytes. The Bosh Mad managed to forge some type of weapon, The Tooth of Light, to defeat the Beast but it was never used because they were all killed. The weapon was kept hidden so it may still exist. Suddenly, Cordy has a vision that reveals the weapon is The Sword of Bosh Mad and it is located in Los Angeles. They finally get a break and Angel is happy that Angelus is not needed. Wes apologizes for endangering Angels life.
Beneath the city, in the sewers, Cordy leads Angel, Wes and Connor to the location of the sword and she explains that the sword is somehow accessible from a hundred points located all over the world. At the entrance of a cave, small bells are hanging from the ceiling on leather straps. She touches a few with her lamp and they ring, causing a booby trap of long wooden spikes to go off. They understand they must go through the corridor without ringing the bells. They carefully begin their walk but close to the end, a lamp catches a bell and Wes and Angel barely make it through to join Cordy and Connor on the other side.
The next test is a stone wall with markings of Rashi script in Hebrew. A Hebrew letter marks each stone and after a false try that finds a wooden stake through Wesleys hand, he figures the order of the stones. The wall lifts high enough for Angel and Connor to hold and they all slip through. Another test passed, and more cave to explore, they decide to split up--Cordy and Angel one way, against Connors wishes, and he and Wes in the opposite direction.
As Cordy and Angel walk through the cave, Cordy realizes shes made some bad decisions but before they can really talk, she sees a light and they find a room illuminated from an unknown source. In the middle is a rock base and Angel reaches out above the base and a round ball appears-the source of light. His arm catches the sword, and he figures it is a dimensional hub that allows the sword to be in several places at once. He takes it out and the cave quickly begins to shake. Pillars fall and fire breaks out, dividing them. Cordy screams.
Act III:
In the fiery cave, Angel jumps over the fire and rescues Cordy. Both fall hard into another corridor and Cordy hugs Angel. She cries at the thought of nearly dying and not having the opportunity to apologize for her night with Connor. And she confesses, When Im with you, all I feel is the good youve done as Angel. They forgive each other and kiss. The kiss ends and they realize that Wes and Connor have caught up to them and also witnessed their exchange. Connor runs off and Angel follows.
In a booby trapped cave, Angel tries to make things right with Connor but he steps on a trap and a spike finds itself in Angels shoulder. Connor blames his father for all that is wrong with his life. They fight as they try to circumvent the spikes that keep flying out from the walls. Cordy arrives and the fight stops and tells Connor that she was never his. With those words, Connor runs away once more.
A while later, the crew sans Connor arrive at the Hyperion. Gunn plays with the sword and manages to half an innocent table. They need to find the Beast but Lornes scant sources point to the warehouse district. Fred and Gunn add that their research along with a short passage on the dead shamans butt, revealed that the Beast can be defeated if the brain is pierced with the sword. However, the power used to darken the sun will be released and nothing human within its range can survive it. Fred doesnt believe that even Angel can survive it. Angel takes the sword and Cordy refuses to let him fight the Beast alone, especially when she loves him. He promises to return for her but first he must find the Beast. Suddenly, the Beast breaks through the doors, Angel remarks, Oh, there he is.
Act IV:
In the lobby, the Beast steps inside with confidence and catches sight of the sword in Angels hand, Oh, is that what I think it is? Angel orders them to leave and Wes must drag Cordy out. Angel successfully hurts the Beast with the magically forged weapon but it is short lived. The Beast catches the sword in his grip and tears it in half. The Beast chokes Angel but Connor steps in with an axe and distracts the powerful demon. The Beast quickly beats down Connor but admires his arrogance, So much like Angelus. On the floor, Connor points out, His name is Angel. The demon turns his attention to Angel but it is too late. Angel stakes the pointy half of the sword into the Beasts brain. The Beast releases the energy in multiple rays of light and turns to dust.
Outside, the sun quickly returns to normal.
Back inside, the evil defeated, Connor has come to terms with Cordys stronger feelings for Angel and accepts them. Father and son finally reconcile. The rest of their family joins them and even Gunn and Wes share a celebratory hand shake. All that remains of the Beast is a pile of dust.
The citizens of Los Angeles return to their normal lives with the sun shining over head. Unknown to them are the heroes that saved them.
In Angels bedroom, he enjoys having peace again and looks out his window, safe from the sun. Cordy realizes it must be hard for Angel to be unable to enjoy the light he brought back but hed rather be with her than any other place. They kiss and Cordy urges him to take this chance because everything is the way its supposed to be and he continues to kiss her. They undress each other and fall on his bed with only one goal in mind. Angels moment of pure happiness approaches against his will and reality pierces through, Buffy! No! Oh, God no!
Inside the cage, Wo-Pang says, Illusion becomes reality, as he stands over Angels soulless body still strapped to the table. Cordy meets his gaze, Angelus! An evil cackle reverberates through the basement. Behind them, the Mou-Ping is glowing with Angels soul. Angelus has returned.
