Episode 15, Season 4 Title: "Orpheus"
Written by: Mere Smith Directed by: Terrence O'Hara Original Air Date: 19 March 2003
Teaser:
Angelus takes his verbal assault telling Faith, "Nothing will ever change. You're just like me!" Faith lays a beating on Angelus and states, "You're wrong, I'm different now. I'm not like you." He kicks her, taking Faith down in a hold, her back to him. He transforms into his vampire face and replies, "You will be," and bites down on her neck as she cries out. But Angelus pulls back gasping and groaning, we flashback to a few minutes earlier when Wesley held Angelus at bay with his shotgun allowing Faith time to inject herself with the drug used in the back room of the demon bar. Angelus collapses on the floor as Wes checks on Faith, who herself collapses weakly saying, "Kicked his ass."
Act I:
Through the Hyperion lobby doors Gunn drags in an unconscious and bound Angelus as he calls out for Connor. Fred and Lorne, hearing the distress, gather as Wesley carries in an unconscious Faith in his arms. He tells Gunn to take Angelus downstairs. Connor assists him.
We switch between scenes of Angelus being chained within his cage and Faith being laid on the bed in one of the hotel rooms. Gunn begins to shackle Angelus. Fred notices the bite mark on Faith's neck. Connor realizes A up us fed from Faith as he can smell blood on Angelus' breath. He mumbles in his drugged state, as does Faith.
In Faith's room Lorne accuses Wesley of drugging Faith and feeding her to Angelus, but Wes confesses it was her choice. But Lorne is concerned with the results of what such a sacrifice will bring.
Cordelia is less impressed by Faith's state as Connor informs her of the recent events. Cordy is more concerned that Angelus is secure, but when Connor admits Faith did a number on him, Cordy shoves him against the wall accusing him of infidelity. He questions how Cordy could attack him but she assures him it must be her wacky hormones and sends him off to check on Faith.
Back in Faith's room, Fred wants to know what drug they used. Lorne tells her it was Orpheus, a mystical, enchanted drug. The more you take the deeper you sink, and it gives the user psychic illusions as Wes adds, "It leads you down to hell. . .
In the basement Gunn closes the cell door and secures the locks ". . . and leaves you there."
New York City 1902 ~ Immigrants arrive at Ellis Island as Angel roams the streets. Angelus appears but Angel walks right through him. Faith is standing behind Angelus and he tries attacking her but passes through her as well. Faith determines this is a side effect from her little ruse to subdue Angelus, but he's more annoyed at having to witness Angel's past.
Suddenly they are in Chicago in the early 20's. Angelus sees Angel sitting on a bench and wants out badly of this scene. Faith doesn't understand until a car screeches around the corner and Angel bolts across the road, saving a puppy. Angelus is truly in hell, forced to relive Angel's good deeds!
In Faith's room Lorne watches as she slips further into her coma.
In the hotel office, Wesley offers one last hope for Faith. Fred and Connor argue the points to re-ensoul Angel; Connor wants to put Angelus done, just then a voice states, "I think you need a witch." Willow stands just inside the lobby doors.
Act II:
Willow enters the lobby and meets Conner for the first time. Wesley wonders what called her to L.A. and it seems Fred was the source who has discovered the only person to re-ensoul Angel. Willow then asks about Cordelia and although Connor objects to visitors Wesley stresses Cordy will want to see her.
Cordy lies in bed as Connor and Willow enter. She quickly sends Connor on his way and the two reminisce, swapping stories of higher powers and ultimate evils. Willow admits re-ensouling Angel has many complications; missing soul, contained in the Muo-ping jar, impervious to magick. Cordy holds a knife under her blanket while they unintentionally determine they can just break the jar. Angel's Soul will be released into the ether by the use of a Delothrian's Arrow spell. As willow excitedly leaves the room, the knife wedges into the door.
Lorne comforts Faith with soft words and a quite melody.
MacGarther Park plays on the jukebox as Angel enters a diner. Angelus and Faith watch from a booth as Angel plays Mandy next. A buzzing sound begins to bother Angelus as a couple leaves, the smell of humans affects him as well as Angel - it's the hunger. Faith stresses it's Angel who belongs on the outside but the battle between good and evil isn't so clean cut as we see when a robber shoots the counter clerk. The buzzing continues to annoy Angelus.
In Cordy's room she casts a spell before a glowing crystal, calling Angelus to return from the darkness, but it fails.
Downstairs in the lobby, Willow is working on her own spell. Wesley questions that Delothrian's Arrow is used to protect good magick as the Muo-ping is sacred, so how can it be broken. "It's what's inside that's sacred", Willow has studied the Daharim. Wes admits a lot has happened since Sunnydale; he's changed, she admits her past evil, and they share a common understanding of darkness.
Back at the diner, the clerk dies before Angel can save him, but not before he's willing to feed on him to Faith's disgust. The beast within Angel still prevails. Suddenly Faith's neck begins to bleed from her bite wound.
Act III:
In Faith's room, Lorne watches as she struggles with her emotions from the other side. He believes she's going through the Barrens and that she doesn't have much time left as he tells Connor who looks on. Wesley enters, not willing to give Faith up for dead; it's time to re-ensoul Angel.
Down in the Lobby, Fred holds a candle and circles the room ringing a bell. Willow begins to contact the spirit world, harness the Delothrian Ebb, and focus it through her marble-o'doom to restore the Muo-ping's entopic equilibrium. Gunn goes downstairs to watch over Angelus. Just as she begins, Willow is thrust across the room.
Cordy is up in her room, conjuring the disembodied voice into Willow's head.
Downstairs, Willow tries to counter as the Hyperion begins to shake.
Lorne talks to Faith as her moaning increases when suddenly she bolts up gasping for breath.
In a dark alley, Faith stands up from the ground as Angelus taunts her, she's on her last breath, not much time left for her now, yet Faith hears a voice that tells her different.
Willow is in full spell-casting mood.
Angel and Faith turn around to see Angel feeding on rats. 20 years after the donut shop incident Angel has fed off of nothing since. Faith offers that Angel is 'paying for what he did', Angelus counters that he's 'hiding from what he is'. Suddenly Angel is aware of Angelus and Faith presence.
In the hotel, Connor states something evil is rising.
Cordy continues her spells from her room but struggles against Willow.
In the lobby, a huge floating head appears as Willow send the enchanted ball off to break the jar, but Cordy's magick is holding it at bay until Connor bangs on the door, distracting her long enough, the jar breaks and Angel's soul is released.
Back in the Ally, Faith is happy to see Angel, but he questions why she's still there. Angelus suddenly kicks Faith and sends her into the wall, the rules have changed. With Faith down, the real battle between good and evil begins.
Act IV:
As Angelus and Angel battle it out Angel tries to reach Faith, drawing her out and back into the fight. He needs her as he admits his past's wrongs.
Connor bursts into Cordy's room, and she breaks a vase over his head, feigning he was the floating head. Worried for her and the baby, Connor deduces it was the result of Willow's evil magick. Cordy plays on his commitment and convinces him to kill Angelus.
Again, we switch quickly to the action between scenes, as downstairs Willow begins the final stages to channel Angel's soul into the Orb of Thessulah. In her room, Cordy tells Connor he must kill his father before anything else can go wrong. Willow and Fred begin the Latin translation of the spell. Gunn watches over Angelus in the basement as Lorne, sitting on her bed, holds Faith in his arms. The battle continues in the alley and Faith struggles to get back into the game and Connor heads down to the basement to do Cordy's bidding.
Willow continues with the spell.
Angel knocks Angelus out and goes to Faith, he tries to convince her her time is not yet up. He needs her help, needs her to fight.
Connor descends the steps in the basement calling to Gunn as he knocks him out.
Angel needs Faith to fight, but it's Angelus who lays one last pipe upside Angel's head and just when he's about to land the final blow, Faith is standing behind him. Angelus swings out, but the pipe goes right through Faith.
In her room, Faith leaps from the bed and bolts out to the look of shock on Lorne's face.
Downstairs, Willow articulates the final words of the Restoration spell.
Suddenly Angel and Angelus are fused into one being.
As Connor is about to stake Angel, Faith grabs his hand. The two fight it out, but Connor is not match for the Slayer as Wes, Fred and Lorne open the door to the basement. A final kick sends Connor into the bars and Angel grabs him. It's over.
Later, Angel stands out on the deck of the courtyard as Faith joins him. She's heading to Sunnydale, gratitude's are exchanged and they head inside before hugs can ensue.
Inside the lobby, the entire gang (except Cordy) is gathered as Connor confesses he messed up. Gunn wishes he had seen the Jr butt-kicking and Faith says goodbye to Wesley. Fred and Willow make their closer concerning bacchanals and demonic tongues and Angel gives his gratitude to Willow as well. After they leave, Angel begins to speak when Cordy appears on the stairs; she offers that his, 'the worst is behind us speech' is best saved for later as she shows them all she is with child.
