Episode 17, Season 4 Title: "Inside Out"
Written by: Steven S. DeKnight Directed by: Steven S. DeKnight Original Air Date: 2 April 2003
Teaser:
In the abandoned warehouse of Lorne's ritual, Cordelia is surrounded by the Angel Investigations crew and confronted by Angel with the knowledge that they are onto her. The words, 'My sweet', were what tipped Angel off to who Cordy truly was, but finally tired of games Angel approaches her to ask where the real Cordy is. He parries the ensuing attack and grabs Cordelia by the throat. At that precise moment, Connor bursts through the skylight amid a shower of glass. He dispatches the AI crew with minimal effort, thanks mostly to a stray tranquilizer dart that takes out Angel. As he passes out, Angel is left with only unanswered questions, "Who are you?" as Connor and a smug Cordelia escaping into the night. The Magic 8-Ball rolls to his side and reveals, Ask Again Later.
Act I:
Gunn arrives at the Hyperion to find Angel, Lorne, Wesley and Fred looking battle-worn. They tell him that Cordelia is evil, although Angel doesn't think it is actually Cordy! Gunn is confused, Fred explains that Cordy is the Master and they were beaten up by Connor whom Cordy has been grooming all this time. Angel believes Connor is not a part of this. The gang begin to piece together the ch andof events starting with Cordy's reappearance from the higher dimension and her amnesia. They ascertain that the real problems did not start until Lorne's spell and are horrified to realise that they 'woke it up'. From inside Cordy the master has been responsible for the murders, deception, the theft of Angel's soul and other recent events surrounding them - all designed to keep them off balance. Wesley is horrified at the realisation that Lilah was murdered by Cordy.
Connor and Cordy arrive at a deserted meatpacking warehouse. Connor reassures Cordy they weren't followed and asks why they were trying to hurt her. She tells him they are afraid of the baby and would have killed them both if Connor hadn't come. She convinces him that Angel hates him for being with her, drawing him further into her deception. She kisses him and tells him that Angel is an animal and has turned everyone against them.
Angel approaches Wesley in the Hyperion office, despite picking up their scent several times; he has been unable to find Cordy and Connor. Berating himself for not seeing it, Angel is assured by Wesley that their being 'together' was all part of the plan. They have no information on the Master and although Lorne is out on the Black Market searching for dimensional texts, Wesley thinks they should go to The Powers for help. Angel is unsure as he is convinced they could see all this but did not want to 'get their hands dirty'.
Back at the warehouse, Connor is still uncertain about what happened and wonders if maybe it wasn't Angel who tried to kill Cordy; Angelus could have tricked them again. Connor remembers all the things Angel told him about being a champion, and Fred, Gunn, Wesley, Lorne...the fact that they are good. Cordy tells him that 'good' and 'evil' are words, concepts of morality and rules forged by them that Connor no longer has to live by, she reminds him that they are special and their baby is going to be extraordinary.
Fred and Gunn enter the Hyperion office carrying a box, having made a fruitless search of Cordy's room. Angel has found the coin and key devise needed to enter Skip's hell dimension and heads off. After slaying a demon guard he descends the stairs into Skip's chamber; a demon sitting in a chair with his back to us is eating. Raising his sword to strike, Angel is surprised as he is faced with a startled Skip. He asks when Skip last saw Cordy who informs him that she has descended to a higher plain. Knowing this, and as she is now back, Angel learns that Skip was involved in Cordy's ascension but not her return. Skip tries to cover, but Angel becomes suspicious and he proposes that Skip must have either been involved in delivering Cordy as the Master upon her ascension or else he was duped. A spike shoots from Skips arm - "Not duped!"
Act II:
Inside Skip's hell dimension, he and Angel battle fiercely as Skip takes the upper hand beating Angel resoundingly. He tells Angel he will lose as he lands a defeating blow.
In the dark loft of the warehouse, Cordelia has Connor feel their baby kick. She continues to convince Connor that Angel and the team won't stop until they are found. Sensing Connor's resolve, she tells him of a plan to bring the birth about now so they can protect their family.
Back in Skip's dimension, he continues to thrash and deride Angel. Angel keeps getting up and asking Skip for the truth about Cordelia. Angel grabs a metal chain, wraps it around his hand and unleashes on Skip, breaking off the horn of armor on his head and finally knocking him unconscious.
Meanwhile in the Hyperion lobby, the A.I. gang is researching when Angel and an unconscious Skip are suddenly transported back into the lobby. Angel asks the gang to bind Skip to this dimension while he is still unconscious.
In an alleyway, a young teenage girl is about to be bitten by a vampire when Connor comes from behind to stake the vamp and save her. The young girl cries in thanks and Connor asks if she is ok. She replies, 'yes' and then Connor punches her in the face.
Back in the loft, the unconscious girl lies on the floor and Cordy praises Connor for his work. She sees Connor is conflicted and proceeds to explain that the girl's blood for their baby is a fair trade because they are special.
At the Hyperion, Skip wakens to find a containment spell has him confined to a small circle on the floor. Angel, Fred, Gunn and Wesley threaten to confine him in the Sphere of Infinite Agony if he doesn't explain what has happened to Cordelia. Skip is sufficiently concerned enough about the Sphere to agree to talk. Angel begins to interrogate Skip as he reveals Evil-Cordelia is the real Cordelia but that something else is controlling her body. He also reveals her ascension was part of a bigger plan.
Meanwhile in the loft, Cordelia sits in a sacred circle chanting in another language as Connor keeps watch over the virgin girl. She soon awakens with a start but Connor tells her she will be all right. The girl sobs in fear and begs for her life as suddenly Connor hears a female voice within the room. He asks if anyone is there and from the ether, Darla, his mother, walks towards him.
Act III:
In the warehouse, Darla tell Connor she was sent by The Powers to give him a message. Connor doubts that it is truly his mother, but she explains that she has all of the memories and feelings. Connor says his mother is dead but Darla asserts that she will always be a part of him because they shared a soul. Meanwhile the girl looks on and it appears that Connor is talking to himself. Darla explains she gave her life for his and dies everyday for eternity, and asks if this is how he repays her, with the blood of an innocent? Increasingly unsure, Connor says that he needs it for his baby, to keep it safe. Darla asks if he wants his baby to be anointed in the blood of the innocent and if he truly believe safety will come from an evil deed? Connor repeats what Cordy told him, "Good. Evil. They're just words."
Back in the Hyperion lobby, Angel questions Skip about what has taken over Cordy. Skip says it is something beyond comprehension and has no name. Wesley speculates that the being maneuvered Cordy into inheriting the visions in the first place. Skip mocks their realization as Angel says everything that has happened to Cordy over the past few years has been planned. Skip replies that everything has been planned including Lorne leaving Pylea, the death of Gunn's sister, Fred choosing the wrong book, and Wesley sleeping with Lilah. Skip continues saying, Connor was designed to make a vessel for the being inside of Cordy. Cordy had to become a higher being because whatever is inside of Cordy could not be inside a human. Angel asks how to stop it. Unfortunately Skip says that it can only be stopped by killing Cordy. Determined, Angel asks how to find her. Slipping, Skip suggests the Boosundi ritual which would require an Atoman paw. To everyone's surprise, Lorne remembers that Cordy kept one in her desk, thinking it was a back-scratcher.
In the warehouse, Connor is still talking with Darla as she assures Connor that everyone is just scared and that they do not hate him. She sees the goodness in his heart, Darla insists he has a choice because he has a soul. Thinking and doubting, Connor says that the virgin's blood for the baby's is fair. The virgin screams and Connor yells at her to shut up. Darla says that this is not him. She knows because they shared a soul. She feels everything like it were her own. Pressing her hand to his chest she says that she always feels the good in his heart.
At the Hyperion, Fred watches Angel brood in his office, wondering what he is going to do. She thinks about what Skip said concerning them all being pawns. Gunn gives her a reassuring speech, suggesting that the final scare can never be rigged. Lorne walks in with a burned map, saying they located Cordy downtown in the meat packing district. Angel takes the map and says that no one is coming with him. He doesn't want anyone else to carry the burden of killing Cordelia. Fred realizes he is actually going to kill her. She stops Angel as he starts to leave. They stare at each other until he turns and exits.
Back in the warehouse, Connor begins to untie the virgin to encouraging words from Darla but Cordy walks in and he falters. Darla tells him to listen to his heart, Connor suggests they let the virgin go. He says the baby shouldn't be "anointed with innocent blood" and Cordy mocks him, wondering who had been filling his head with "big, confusing words." As Darla continues to talk to Connor, Cordy senses her. She says it is a spell; a trick Angel is playing on him which just shows how much he hates Connor. Darla and Cordy bombard Connor from both sides until he squeezes his eyes shut and yells. He drags the girl into the next room as Cordy follows with a butcher knife. Right as Cordy is about to bring the knife down the girl, she appears to be Darla asking Connor not to do this. He hesitates and Cordy kills the girl, splashing blood over Connor's confused face.
Act IV:
In the warehouse, Connor looks down on the face of the virgin, only to be looking at the resemblance of Darla. Cordelia begs him to start the ritual and as the face turns back to the young girl, Connor places his hand in her blood. Cordy, laying on the floor continues to chant, "Vajara'ha'esh Vanu'esh Katahn Dahr'im." She tells him to begin and he places his bloody handprint on her swelled abdomen. As the blood is absorbed, Cordelia screams out.
The walls, floors and ceilings of the Hyperion begin to tremble as a piece of debrey clashes to the floor, across Skip's containing circle. As Fred asks what's happening, Skip steps free and offers it's the 'end of the world.'
On the floor of the loft, Cordelia joyfully says that the beginning of a new world is coming. "Or not," as Angel steps from the shadows, sword in hand.
Back at the Hyperion, Skip takes to beating on the A.I. gang, starting with Fred and then takes out Wesley who comes to her defense.
At the loft, Angel tries to explain to Connor that Cordelia has lied to everyone and it's not really her, but Connor attacks Angel instead of listening.
As the fighting continues at the Hyperion, Gunn attacks Skip only to be thrown across the lobby. Wesley fires his gun multiple times at Skip with no effect until it's flung from his hand. Skip returns his attention to Fred as Wes dives to the floor scooping up the gun and taking final aim at the wound in Skips head. He drops to the ground, dead.
Angel and Connor continue to fight at the loft, and while Connor is down, Angel picks up his sword and is about to kill Cordy, "I'm so sorry," when a bright light explodes from Cordy into the room sending him crashing into the far wall, as well as a recovering Connor. A demon expands forth from the light as Angel and Connor look on in disbelief and Cordy falls unconscious. Just then, a being forms from the apparition; Angel ready to attack again, drops his sword. In awe, he and Connor drop to their needs, "You're beautiful," and the beautiful woman indeed replies, "Angel."
