Episode 20, Season 4 Title: "Sacrifice"
Written by: Ben Edlund Directed by: David Straiton Original Air Date: 23 April 2003
Teaser:
Connor stands in the doorway of the Hyperion's bedroom where the A.I gang tried to convert him with Cordelia's blood. As Angel tries to convince Connor that Jasmine is controlling his feelings reinforcements come down the hall. Angel slams the door on Conner and tells the others to leave.
Through the bedroom window, Gunn, Wesley, Fred and Lorne flee down the fire escape.
Connor brakes through the door but Angel enters the hall and begins to beat on Connor.
In the alley below, the gang pulls up in Angel's car. Fred and Gunn think of other ways of saving Connor when he suddenly lands, unconscious on the car's hood. Angel gets in and orders Wesley to drive as Jasmine and her followers appear. Backing out of the alley, the A.I. gang, minus Connor, speed away.
Act I:
Driving away from Los Angeles, the pleasant female voice on the radio announces that the Mayor has declared the first Citadel of Jasmine, and the L.A. Arch Dieses is replacing all idols with images of 'she who walks among us'. Angel switches the radio off as they contemplate what to do next. Fred thinks they should have taken Connor with them, but Angel worries more about what if they had.
Back in Jasmine's suite, several followers are undressing while Connor, still unconscious is in a nearby chair. A green glow encompasses the room as Jasmine absorbs new energy and Connor awakes. Jasmine passes her hand over Connor's face and heals his wounds as he informs her Gunn, Lorne and Wesley have also been turned. Jasmine explains all her followers are fusing together, like a cell of a single body, if needed they will become her fists as well.
At a rest stop's gas station off the highway, Angel determines how they are to get gas among all the happy people. Wesley suggests once they are out of the sphere of Jasmine's influence they may be able to form some form of resistance.
As a guy begins to use the gas pump, Gunn surprises him, punching him out. Angel pulls up the car and Gunn fills the tank. Suddenly a man approaches speaking with Jasmine's voice and the people begin to attach. A.I. goes into defense mode but everyone is now talking with Jasmine's voice. Filled up, everyone jumps in, and Angel drive off as the police arrive and give chase.
In Jasmine's suite, she lounges in a chair and wholeheartedly laughs.
In a deserted alley, Angel pulls over; it's time they disappeared. As a helicopter's searchlight passes over Angel's empty car, a manhole cover is revealed.
Below in the sewers, the A.I. gang is running out of steam and they stop for a minute. Angel's knowledge of the tunnels will give them some lead-time but Angle and Gunn begin to argue over not having a plan. Fred realizes they've forgotten about Cordelia, but Angel tells them to get over it, the heart will only get in the way, then have to move on.
In Cordy's room, Connor holds her hand, still in a comatose state. Jasmine enters, and Connor points out the cut on Cordy's wrist. Jasmine blames the use of black magic and asks Connor to leave the room so she can be alone with her mother.
Within the city the sewers, the gang reflects on the empty feelings Jasmine has left them with. Fred remembers having been asked to choose Jasmine's name which Wesley finds odd of someone so old, not having a name already. Suddenly Wesley and Angel fall through the floor. Gunn pulls Wes up but Angel is held at stake point by a young boy.
Act II:
Several teens arrive with weapons, Angel jumps up from the trap and the gang takes the advantage. After knocking the boy down, Angel helps him up and discovers they aren't under Jasmine's mind control. One of the boys, Randall, is the younger brother of Tommy Golden, known to Gunn from when Randall was 12 and stole his car. Suddenly a noise is heard.
Connor walks down the hall to Cordy's room, Jasmine still sits on her bed, but Cordy is gone. She tells him Cordelia's blood is a danger to them and she is where Jasmine wants her to be, as is Connor. Smiling he follows her out of the room.
The gang and the teens arrive at a secure section of the sewer tunnels. The younger boy, Matthew, tries to befriend Angel but he's not having it. Randall explains Matthew's parents were murdered by vamps during a pile up on Le Brea. They've been down in the tunnels since the sun when out. The creature they heard has been picking them off, Gunn explains Tommy was a member of his crew as a young girl reflects that the world is ending. Fred tells them they're professional monster killers, Angel picks up Tommy's sword and they head off to get the creature.
Jasmine is in her suite on her phone with the Governor when Connor informs her the police lost Angel and the gang. Jasmine wants to celebrate, the Governor has turned over his offices, the state now answers to her. She rejoices that the world is about to kneel before her, and Connor will be at her side making the pyramids of Giza look like the headstone of a pauper's graveyard. They hug, but Connor is holding onto his pain. Jasmine has Connor dig his nails into her hand so that she may take his pain. Her hand heals before his eyes.
In the tunnels, the gang and the teens go to the spot where Tommy was attached, when Randall is suddenly sucked up a shaft. Angel flies up after him and Randall's wounded body drops back to the floor. Angel follows but in vamp face, and Mathew seeing him, runs off. Just then, a clawed arm reaches out to Fred, Gunn cuts her free, and they go after Mathew before he can reach the surface. Suddenly Angel realizes, "Where's Wes?"
In another area, Wesley is slammed into a sewer wall as the huge bug-like creature approaches him saying, "We loved her first!"
Act III:
In the sewer corridor Angel says he will look for Wesley and tells Lorne to go back to the base. As he gets up Randall and his crew point their pikes at Angel and Lorne.
In the monster's lair the creature stands over Wesley, waving its mandibles around and makes clicking noises. It argues that his kind built a temple from stone. Wesley realizes that he is talking about Jasmine and explains that Jasmine. The creature gets angry and says mice shouldn't name her. She is the devourer, the song, the peace, and the whole. Suddenly, a piece of gore falls from the ceiling. The creature scuttles over to the wall where a body is embedded in it. The demon explains that love is sacrifice.
Back in a sewer corridor Fred and Gunn look for Matthew. Gunn agrees with Angel's idea that feelings don't matter anymore and that she had no problem turning off her "emotion chip" when they killed a man. However, Fred admits she felt every bit of that, at times it eats her up.
In the other part of the sewers, Randall still threatens Angel with the pike. Angel tries to explain as Lorne babbles on about him only drinking pigs blood. Frustrated, Angel stops explaining and says he can easily disarm Randall and kill him and tells Randall to step aside so he can help Wesley.
Outside Fred and Gunn emerge from a sewer pipe and move through a hole in a chain link fence as they proceed down the street in search for Matthew.
Back in the creature's lair, it digs the guts out of a body in the wall. Wesley tries to talk with it and the creature explains that it is from another, older world. Wesley notices a blue orb and the creature says that it is the key to its world, but the fumes there would burn Wesley's lungs. He asks if the creature is preparing a spell. It is preparing blood magic, which is more powerful than words. There are no incantations. She doesn't care about words. The demon starts to say that there is only one word she gives care to, but it stops in mid sentence. Wesley presses the issue until the demon threatens him. Suddenly the body move, it is a vampire and he asks to be staked. Confused, the demon rips out the vampires tongue. Wesley explains that it is a vampire and can't be killed like that. The demon says names are why they are so weak, it takes their power away. Wesley realizes that Jasmine's name is the word she gives care to.
Outside Matthew stares at the sky. Fred and Gunn catch up and try to persuade him to follow them back into the sewers. He won't cooperate and starts to yell. To Fred's horror, Gunn punches him and he tells her to grab Matthew's feet.
Back in the creature's lair, Wesley continues to question about Jasmine's name. The demon says the high priest keeps her name and that he is just a messenger. Angel appears, saying, "It's time to kill the messenger." The demon hits Wesley and begins to brawl with Angel.
Back at the sewer base, Lorne lectures the teens, seemingly about Angel being good as Fred and Gunn rush in and lay Matthew on the bed. Suddenly Matthew starts laughing in Jasmine's voice. She tells Holly how they hit Matthew again and again. Gunn tells Fred and Lorne they have to leave as Jasmine asks Randall if he wants to hurt them, kill them. Lorne, Gunn, and Fred run down the sewers, but stop short. A massive group of officers shine flashlights at them. Connor pushes out of the middle, and in Jasmine's voice says, "I believe you've met my father."
Act IV:
Back in the creature's lair, Angel is slammed into a wall and skewered by an arm. Wesley attacks from behind and Angel takes advantage of the distraction and stabs the creature in the neck, as it dies it says, "Devour this meat I give unto thee." Wesley informs Angel that the creature came from a world that worshiped Jasmine for a millennia, and that can be reached through the orb.
In the other tunnels, Gunn, Fred and Lorne flee Jasmine's followers.
Wesley inspects the orb, but no inscriptions or marking are found, no moving parts. Wes guesses that the high priest in the other dimension is larger than the creature they just defeated when Angel suddenly senses that something bad is going down, something with Connor.
An army led by Connor travels down the tunnels with flashlights, Connor pause and says, "Angel."
In her suite, Jasmine focuses and also says, "Angel."
Gunn, Fred and Lorne reach Angel in the tunnels, Wesley tries to recall the words of the creature, "No word, magic," as they enter and bolt the door. Wes realizes it's "blood magic" and place his blood on the orb. It begins to glow and a portal opens. Wesley tells Angel he is the only one who can travel through it. As the rest of the gang holds the door back, Angel steps into the portal, and Wes tosses him the orb. They stand back from the door and Connor kicks it in as both sides attack full force.
In her room, Jasmine stands with open arms as slashes and cuts appears and immediately heal as she gleefully laughs.
Angel steps into a strange world, vast, misty and gray. Fissures and stalagmites fill the void around him as dozens of creatures approach and stand before him, "Oh, hell."
