Trivia * Character Corbin Fries is the name of Joss Whedon's nephew. * T.J. Thyne who would later plays alongside David Boreanaz on "Bones" (2005) makes the first of several appearances on "Angel" (1999) in this episode. * David Boreanaz appears in this season as the only remaining original "Angel" (1999) cast member. * Alexis Denisof was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy just before filming of the final season on Angel commenced. During the shooting of 'Conviction', director Joss Whedon was careful to keep most of Alexis's shots on his right profile, as the left side of his face was fairly immobile at the time.
Goofs * Plot holes: The memory of Connor was erased from everyone's mind, except for Angel's. Since Connor was at least part of the reason Cordelia is in a coma, how was it explained exactly how she ended up in her condition?

Episode 1, Season 5 Title: "Conviction"
Written & Directed by: Joss Whedon Original Air Date: October 1st, 2003
Teaser:
A young woman walking down a dark street is confronted by a vampire, Angel, hearing her scream, jumps across the rooftops to her rescue. A fight ensues and as Angel stakes the vampire the woman, terrified, backs away; she doesn't understand. Angel tells her not to try but to stay out of dark alleys in future. As he is leaving, tyres screech and a confused Angel is faced with a group of armed men dressed in black. The man in charge, Agent Hauser, confirming by radio that the hostile is secured and Angel is unharmed, explains that he is head of Angel's operations team. Two lawyers from Wolfram & Hart arrive, the male explains to Angel that he has a tracking monitor on his lapel as the female approaches the rescued woman and asks her to sign an indemnity. Angel is flabbergasted at the whole situation; he just helps the helpless!
Act I:
Two young boys walk to their classroom in high school, the teacher hands one of the boys, Matthew, his homework telling him it is pretty good.
As Fred exits the lift at Wolfram & Hart carry a box of supplies, Wesley calls her, she is lost again, the firm is so big and she can't find her lab. As she and Wesley ponder the reasons for them being at the evil Wolfram & Hart, Fred is called by Knox, one of her employees. After being introduced to Wesley he escorts her to her office. Wesley watches Fred leave as Gunn arrives and they chat briefly before crossing the lobby to two large offices, discussing who will take which of them. Gunn tells Wesley that it will be a long time before any of them feels comfortable in Wolfram & Hart. At that moment Lorne walks by, phone in hand, examining carpet swatches and seeming very much at home.
Angel exits the lift and crosses the lobby to Wesley and Gunn, complaining about his incident in the alley. The three of them enter his office to find Eve, who is Angel's new liaison officer and works only for the Senior Partners, lounging across his desk. Angel, unimpressed, reminds her it is his office, he is in charge. She tells Angel that he is only in charge of the LA branch of Wolfram & Hart. His clients are mostly evil demons and he can do as he chooses but if he closes it down the connections will dry up and the evil will go elsewhere. Angel and the gang need to keep the clients happy; in order to stay ahead of the game they need to focus on the bigger problems.
In Angel's office the whole gang, surrounded by boxes are checking the files and discussing cases. Angel is greeted by silence when he asks them if they are doing the right thing being at Wolfram & Hart. He sends them off to get some sleep and continues to work alone.
Entering his office to retrieve his coat, Gunn is greeted by Eve who taunts him about simpler days with pointy sticks and asks him if he's ready for the next step or is he backing out. Gunn tells Eve that if she knew him she would not have asked that question, to which she replies, "I can see why the Senior Partners chose you." Overhearing this, Wesley asks what Eve meant. Holding the business card she gave him, Gunn tells Wesley it is for a tailor's and it must mean he needs to 'dress for success.'
The following morning Angel, still working in his office, glances at a padded envelope addressed to him and throws it aside. Lifting the intercom phone he finds his new assistant on the other end and asks for some blood. The phone rings, it's Wesley and as they chat Angel glances up and is surprised to find that Harmony is his new assistant. She has been working at Wolfram & Hart for a while and pleads her cause to Angel who just wants to kill her. Wesley arrives to confirm it was his idea and as Angel and Wesley discuss it, Harmony begins to babble about Cordelia. Head bowed Angel tells Harmony that Cordelia is in a coma, to which she seems visibly upset for a few seconds only to recover and beg Angel to not fire her. Harmony leaves as Wesley shows Angel a case file on Corbin Fries, a lowlife about to get 20 years for kidnapping and pimping who is threatening them and demanding help. Harmony shows in Mr Fries who proceeds to discuss his situation with Angel and Wesley. Whilst admitting his guilt he is angry that he has gone to trial as it would not have happened if Holland Manners were still around and demands that Angel get him off or he will drop the bomb and bye, bye California.
Act II:
In the boardroom at Wolfram & Hart, the employees are singing for Lorne, he is checking to see who is evil.
In her office, Fred explains Lorne's powers to Knox as the phone rings, it's Angel.
In Angel's office the gang, minus Gunn, discuss the bomb and deduce that it is probably mystical and probably not an explosive but maybe a virus of some kind and it could have come from Wolfram & Hart. Wesley asks Fred to check out the lab records and sends Lorne to the courthouse to listen in. Harmony arrives, she has been unable to reach Gunn and hands Angel the address of Spanky, a freelance mystic mentioned in Fries' files.
Heading into the Wolfram & Hart car park Angel, excited at the sight of an array of classic cars, is suddenly approached by Agent Hauser who offers to bring in Spanky. Angel, wondering how the operations team knew, declines the offer and heads off in one of the cars. Arriving at the apartment, he is admitted by Spanky who surmises that Angel is there about a mystical job. Angel mentions Corbin Fries to Spanky who admits that he built him a box that you could put anything in but he doesn't know what he wanted it for. Suddenly Spanky wraps his arm around Angel's neck in an attempt to crush his windpipe and stop him breathing. Angel tells Spanky that he's not using his windpipe and twists his arm behind his back. Grabbing a bat from the wall he hits Spanky and sends him across the room.
Gunn reads a magazine to the sound of elevator music in the waiting room of W&H medical office. After waiting for 5 hours he is finally shown into a room dominated by a large black leather chair attached with big yellow wires to some sort of computer control panel. After asking about the 'White Room' which Gunn refuses to discuss, the doctor tells him to remove his shirt.
Back at Wolfram & Hart Fred and Knox, surrounded by paperwork, are sitting on the floor. Knox discovers that the firm did some work on illegal pesticides for Mr Fries. The lab technician who worked on it was set on fire and belonged to a cult called "The Black Tomorrow" who specialised in designing gases and viruses. The phone rings, its Angel and Fred advises him that it is most probably a virus which may be airborne. As a very angry Angel confirms to Fred that he knows where the 'bomb' is, Sparky lies beaten and bloody on the floor of his apartment.
In the classroom Matthew Fries is talking in class and the teacher calls his name asking him if he wants to spend the class in the corner. He turns back around and continues his work, his heart beating loudly.
Act III:
Back at the medical office, Gunn, strapped to a chair and attached with multiple wires is continuing his transformation.
Walking through the main lobby, Fred informs Wesley that she has isolated a few strains of a virus but the antidote probably died with the tech guy who created it, while Wes admits he cant disable the trigger without the magic word and killing Fries could trigger it too.
Eve enters Angels office; he is taking the fact that Fries placed the lethal virus in his own son very personally. Eve knows Angel gave up his son -- to save him. And that Connor has no memory of his father, plus the rest of the word; including Angels best friends have never heard of Connor.
Meanwhile in the research lab, Knox informs Fred that they might be looking at retrovirus, spread by touch, with some derivation of the Phonaya strain. The stress is getting to Fred as well. She addresses the entire lab staff informing them that they have only few hours left and when blood starts streaming out of their noses, eye sockets, and fingernail, shell have the satisfaction that shes dying with the only people who deserve it. Now, focus, people! Work the d**n problem!
Across town in a courthouse, Lorne steps from the trial room to call Angel to inform him that they should isolate the boy as the trial is not going well for Fries. Angel, in his office, will head to the school while Lorne keeps an eye on the proceedings.
At the same time in the W&H garage, the Special Operations team van has a bug on Angels call. Agent Hauser commands the team to show the boss how a thread is contained with a clean sweep by taking out the kid, the class, anyone within 50 feet, in other words no survivors.
Act IV:
Back in Angels office, Wesley updates him on the virus as Angel informs Wesley that hes going to the school and tells Wes to head to the courthouse with plan C. Harmony informs Angel that the Special Ops team already left for the school with a10-minute head start.
In the courthouse, Wesley arrives and sits with Lorne who asks him for the plan. Wes opens his jacket to reveal a gun.
The Special Ops arrives at the school taking position. They kick open the door and toss in a smoke bomb, as they enter they find only Angel sitting there waiting. So it turns out, with this new deal and all, I own a helicopter. Agent Hauser orders to have Angel taken out, the gunfire opens up and the brawl ensues.
Back in the trial room, Gunn enters, dressed in a three-piece suits and a briefcase. He requests that the Defense moves for a mistrial on the grounds that the judge removes herself. Gunn presents the judge with her tax records indicating stock in Oriental Bay Exports, owned by Loros, Inc., which is owed by a consortium which includes Corbin Fries. Gunn quotes the case of McCracken vs. The State of Maine, 1954 noting financial dealings. The judge calls for council to meet in her chambers.
Back at the school, the fight continues and its now down to Angel and Agent Hauser. He accuses Angel of trying to come into W&H and solve the problems with his conflicted and confused agenda while Hauser is pure, he believes in evil, he has conviction. But Angel believes in something more powerful, mercy. And blows Hausers head off with his own shotgun.
Later in Angels office, the gang gathers as Eve explains that Gunn allowed W&H to enhance his mind with the comprehensive knowledge of the law. Gunn assures Wesley and Fred that hes still himself but he had the most unused potential. Eve points out he did save the day without resorting to violence. Yay, team. Fred wonders if this is going to be their life now, fighting their own employees and clients, and if they are going to do any good? Angel assures them they will as he opens the package on his desk, an amulet falls to the floor, a mystic whirlwind appears and a being forms amidst screams of pain. To everyones surprise, its Spike!
