Episode 3, Season 5 Title: "Unleashed"
Written by: Elizabeth Craft & Sarah Fain Directed by: Marita Grabiak Original Air Date: October 15th, 2003
Teaser:
At a Drive-In the Angel Investigations gang secretly meet away for a powwow away from Wolfram & Hart. The issue is trust and Wesley is concerned that Fred should not trust Knox, although his agenda seems more personal, as a tongue-tied Fred states that he is not evil. The Senior Partners are evil and Angel wants to know why he has been put in charge, after one month they are so busy that there is no time to investigate the law firm. The main concern is Gunn, who defensively argues he is the same as always, and each talk about what they have gotten from their deal with Wolfram & Hart, Wesley showing them a sterling silver pen. As the subject turns to Spike and Fred explains he is more than a ghost and is unique, Angel's attention is suddenly drawn to something behind them and he asks for Wesley's pen.
A terrified woman runs through the woods away from a growling beast, screaming as she falls and a werewolf claws at her.
Act I:
The woman is bitten and Angel appears and fights the werewolf, killing it with Wesley's silver pen and looking up to find she has gone and we hear the screeching of tires.
At Angel Investigations Angel shows Gunn a sketch of the woman; with two nights of full moon left they need to find her. Gunn pulled the file on McManus, the man Angel killed, who left his wife and kids a couple years ago. Only a few random bodies were discovered over the years, but in the last 6-months corpses have been found like breadcrumbs. Angel reflects that he could once control the wolf, but then gave up. But Nina has them now.
In her office, Fred checks through her files as Spike appears through the wall wanting her help; he is disappearing for longer and feels something holding on to him on the other side. Afraid he will not be able to return next time, he explains to Fred that she is the only one to help him as he and Wesley have history, blood was spilled and there is a vendetta. Fred seeing through him tells him he is full of crap and he admits he doesn't want anyone else to know, but she is adamant that he will have to wait as they need to help the girl who was bitten.
Angel paces Fred's lab, Wesley and Fred have been unable to find anything on the girl despite all the Wolfram & Hart resources. Spike appears, as Wesley shows Angel a fuzzy picture of the girl's bedroom picked up by psychics and introduces Dr Royce, a cryptozoologist from his staff. He's been working on McManus and discovered the Lycanthropus Exterus, which has been undocumented in North America until now, is not of the ordinary variety. It's a biped, stands upright, with canines a big longer and a wider arm span. Angel, interested only in the girl places her under his protection as Spike reminds him that he needs to get to her before she turns otherwise he will have to kill her.
The sun begins to set as the bitten girl wakes up in her bedroom, bathed in sweat, her vision blurring and she wanders to the kitchen where a woman, Gill, and child, Amanda, are preparing dinner. Gill is concerned the girl may be ill as Amanda notices a purple mark on her neck which the girl says must have happened when she fell. Amanda is cooking burgers and the girl, her aunt Nina, is drawn to them but she suddenly sees a vision of Amanda with claw marks across her neck. Aunt Nina will be babysitting Amanda that night.
Back in Fred's lab, an impatient Spike hints to Fred that she has other things to do and Angel tells him that he loves it when he suddenly disappears. They gain information through the tire prints and after checking the traffic camera records, Gunn finds that a blond haired woman ran a red light at 10:19pm at Western and Franklyn in a 1992 Honda Civic, license plate 2ABM 543. Wesley checks the DMV registry and discovers Nina Ash lives at 2315 Harvard in East Hollywood.
Nina plays with Amanda at her house, suddenly feeling ill she goes upstairs and collapses on the floor and Amanda, hearing a noise, goes up to check. Nina begins to fit on the floor and as she starts to change Amanda calls her name through the door.
Act II:
Amanda calls to Aunt Nina as Nina changes fully into a werewolf and Angel appears at the bedroom window baiting her. Jumping at Angel the werewolf knocks them down from the second story window to the ground and a fight ensues but Wesley is at hand and shoots the werewolf, knocking it out, as upstairs a bewildered Amanda looks for Nina in her bedroom.
The sun rises as a frightened and naked Nina wakes up in a cell with huge claw marks on her body. Grabbing some clothes from outside the cell she quickly dons them and backs into the corner asking, "Who are you?" as Angel appears reassuring her, but she is terrified and wants to know what he wants.
In his office Angel shows Nina a video of the werewolf in the cell; asking her if she remembers being attacked two nights ago and as her memory returns she assumes that the werewolf on the screen is the same beast that attacked her. In horror Nina watches her transformation as Angel tells her he was too late to save her, describing symptoms she may already be experiencing. Remembering the smell of blood when her niece was cooking, Nina is terrified for her safety as she wanted to rip her throat out but Angel is quick to reassure her that Amanda and her sister Jill are fine; the feelings are from the beast inside and not her. What would you know asks Nina as Angel uncomfortably admits that he is not a werewolf but as a Vampire he knows what she is feeling and explains that he has a soul and neither of them is evil and, although there is no cure, it can be controlled and he will keep her safe.
In the lobby Angel meets with Fred and Dr Royce who explains that the first few transformations are the worst and she may try to harm herself and even if the tranquilizer that Angel has suggested works for tonight, it is not a long term solution. He recommends that Angel take her home to collect some familiar things as this may help but the recently arrived Spike scoffs that she is a killer and getting her a 'blanket' will make no difference. Another Angel 'v' Spike grudge match starts and Spike disappears; "finally", says Angel before telling Fred he will take Nina home but as it is the middle of the day Fred goes with security instead.
In the car, Fred explains to Nina that she is not a prisoner but they need for her to stay with them tonight. Nina tells Fred she should be in ceramics class, doing Raku, but it seems like another life to her now. She then asks about Fred who tells Nina of her time in the demon dimension and confirms to a curious Nina that she and Angel are not a couple and Angel doesn't date because his situation is too complicated.
In his office Gunn asks Angel to sign a legal document signing over McManus (the original werewolf) to his family but realizing Angel is not listening tries to talk to him only to be told to do his job. As he leaves Lorne arrives picking up on the bad vibes and, after failing to get Angel to open up, reminds him that he is fighting powerful enemies and needs to look after those close to him.
Arriving at the house, Nina is confronted by Gill who is very angry at her leaving Amanda alone as after seeing Nina's bruises and her unusual behavior the day before she thought the worst. Whilst Fred tries to make an excuse for her disappearance, Nina unable to explain the truth instructs Gill to find another babysitter and they leave.
Outside, Fred senses something is wrong, pulling out her gun as they run but Nina is grabbed from behind and as Fred is punched to the ground, the leader speaks by phone to a well to do man named Jacob Crane confirming they have the package.
Act III:
In a dark dungeon like room, Nina, in terror, is chained to the ceiling and soaked through with a hose before being approached by a woman in a white doctor's coat who cuts her clothes off and starts to scrub her with a brush as Crane watches.
In Angel's office, Dr Royce is singing Jessie's Girl for Lorne as the whole gang discuss Nina's disappearance and who knew of her, Fred confirming that it was a military like operation which as Wesley says has happened before. Mocking herself whom she blames, Gunn makes a quip about Spike, prompting Fred to ask if anyone has seen him since he disappeared. Dr Royce arrives with a list of possible suspects and looking beyond him into the lobby Fred sees a thin apparition of Spike and runs after him. Following him down the hall and into an office Fred watches him disappear through the wall and accidentally knocks over the trash can revealing a vial of something on the floor just as Dr Royce arrives and Fred apologizes to him before knocking him out with a lamp.
Whilst Gunn and Fred search Dr Royce's desk, Wesley confirms that the vile is Calendula, used to block Lorne's reading, similar to taking Valium to pass a Polygraph test. Suddenly Gunn finds finds a secret panel.
In Angel's office, he throws Dr Royce on the desk but he refuses to reveal Nina's whereabouts as he thinks Crane is scarier than him; Angel vamps out, "Want to bet!"
Back in Royce's office, Fred, Wes and Gunn empty the contents of the hidden drawer to discover ghastly photos, a sacrificial knife, as Gunn looks at something even more horrific.
They hurry to Angel's office and he informs them he knows where Nina is, but Fred hands Angel a card revealing what they plan to do with her. "It's a menu."
Nina, manacled, gagged and draped in a sheet, is wheeled out on a large platter surrounded by vegetables to an audience of several dinner guests who are informed by her captor, Royce, that moonrise is in fifteen minutes and dinner will be served shortly after.
Act IV:
Crane socializes with his dinner guests, when a knock at the door summons the butler, who upon seeing Dr Royce opens it, only to be knocked out by Gunn's punch. Wesley, who has a gun to Royce's back, enters with Gunn and Angel and they enter the dining area as Nina is being served up to the guests, alive. Angel hits the chef with a frying pan and un-gags Nina as he breaks her manacles. Suddenly security arrives and the gang are at gunpoint; Angel unmoved, tells them he is not leaving without Nina but Crane admits he is willing to let his men die, is Angel? Of course, and the fighting begins but when Nina transforms and attacks a guest, Wesley darts her just as she goes for Gunn. Situation in hand, Angel's ready to leave again, but Crane informs him that his guests have paid a high price and he has promised them a werewolf. Suddenly Nina awakens and bites Dr Evan Royce before Wesley can dart her with a second shot. Angel replies, "And a month now. You'll have one." Cranes' men escort the good doctor away, as he pleads for his life.
Back at Wolfram & Hart, Fred enters her office and is startled to find a barely visible Spike in the shadows. She knows he has been to that 'place' again and has been looking for him and she thanks him for leading her to Dr Royce's office before suddenly realizing it was not on purpose. He tells her it is his last gasp before fire and brimstone and she wants to tell Angel but he orders her not to so she promises that she will find a way to get him back.
The next morning as Angel drops Nina back home, she asks how he lives with the knowledge that he has killed people. Reminding her they were going to eat her he says that one day she will be at the grocery store and realize that being a werewolf has become just a part of who she is. Nina decides she can't tell Amanda and Gill and asks Angel if he ever feels like letting go and disappearing but he tells her that if you separate yourself from those you love the monster wins. "See you next month", Nina confirms to Angel and goes off to hug her family.
The gang admire the view from Angel's apartment in Wolfram & Hart where he has invited them for a get together. Lorne offers to fix drinks whilst Fred asks if they would like Chinese food and Gunn asks Angel if he thinks he has a chance with Nina, "Well she gave me a look" he replies.
