Episode 5, Season 5 Title: "Life of the Party"
Written by: Ben Edlund Directed by: Bill Norton Original Air Date: October 29th, 2003
Teaser:
Cue music, 'Don't Leave Me This Way' as Lorne strolls through the lobby at Wolfram & Hart, his assistant behind him, networking his clients, two phones in hand. Reaching Harmony's desk, he stops to compliment her, enquiring about Angel who suddenly appears, covered in goo and explaining to Wesley that the grenade he had didn't work. Lorne needs to speak to Angel about the party but Angel, tired, beaten and covered in demon blood needs a shower and has no time for him. Leaving Angel, Lorne enters his own suite and the music stops dead.
Walking across to his dressing table mirror he sits down, head in hands seeming very weary as his reflection takes on a life of its own, talking to him. Lorne has a bad headache but his reflection reminds him he has lots to do and needs to smile and get out there but Lorne smashes the mirror, standing up to walk away as his reflection begins to sing "Don't Leave Me This Way." Staring at his reflection, Lorne suddenly springs into life again, grabbing his phone and singing loudly as he leaves his office.
Act I:
Angel is showering in his suite as Eve strolls in, she has a key which Angel makes sure she returns, annoyed as he stands naked in front of her. She wonders if he needs a release with all the pressure but he is quick to point out that he needs only a shower asking her what she wants. He missed their 7.30am meeting, so he dresses and they head down to the lobby where Angel, after insisting to Eve that he is not stressed, sees a huge Halloween pumpkin, punches it and knocks out the poor employee carrying it. Angel asks what is going on as Lorne reminds him of the Wolfram & Hart Halloween party and how none of the 'A' list people are coming which Angel is pleased about. Lorne's head begins to ache again as he drifts off for a moment, returning suddenly and shouting that this is about a party as the bemused Angel looks on agreeing to meet with Lorne in 25 minutes.
In Fred's Lab, Wesley questions her on the faulty grenade adamant that his spell worked and it must be the trigger but Fred argues and is backed up by her assistant, Knox. Sensing an argument brewing, on his arrival Lorne brings up the party but Fred is not planning on going as she would rather stay and get the grenade sorted out, Wesley offers to help too. Lorne will not take no for an answer and Knox offers to sort out the grenade so they can go as a departing Lorne instructs them to be in Angel's office in 15 minutes.
Lorne enters Gunn's office and after first buttering him up he then attempts to recruit him as they need to change Angel's mind about the party. Gunn is really busy but assures him he will get on it soon, great says Lorne asking Gunn to be in Angel's office in 10 minutes.
The whole gang including Eve and Spike, who is disgusted that they are planning something on All Hallows Eve, wait in Angel's office for Lorne. Spike decides to leave as Lorne enters and begins to explain the importance of the party to which Gunn agrees as they need to project the right image, i.e. that they are here to stay. Angel reminds them that all the guests will be evil and could be holding grudges which could lead to an out of control blood bath but Eve is quick to point out that he also needs to look after his employees; Halloween is their Christmas and this is about morale. Harmony appears with Angel's blood informing him that staff morale sucks as they are worried that they may be axed, literally. Angel admits he has killed a few employees and clients and agreeing to the party at last he gives Lorne his blessing but Lorne need him to be more involved then that.
Angel and Lorne are in Angel's limo on their way to meet the Arch Duke Sabassis, bonafide nobility for the fiery down under and the living end of a pure bloodline of demonic royalty who also happens to be top of the 'A' list so if he comes, everyone will follow. Angel remarks to Lorne how much it matters to him personally and Lorne admits he has no special powers or strength but he can do this and he is on the team and he believes the party will serve a purpose in helping Angel.
Angel and Lorne are seated before Sabassis in his throne room, Sabassis informing Angel he preferred his Angelus days as Angel unfazed, answers back in a sarcastic manner. A chained slave approaches at Sabassis instruction, pulling a cork from his arm and draining his own pale blue blood into Sabassis's glass. Angel refuses the offer of a drink and Sabassis comments that Angel would prefer to drink the blood of swine, leading Lorne to glance nervously across at Angel whilst making small talk in an effort to smooth the conversation. Sabassis, in light of his long relationship with Lorne, agrees to attend so Lorne and Angel leave. Sabassis's minion, Artode, is concerned it is a trap but Sabassis, in the mood for intrigue remarks that they need to be properly dressed as the wall slides open revealing an extensive range of weapons.
Act II:
The party has started at Wolfram & Hart and as Harmony dances alone, two employees pregnant dog about the lack of a ritual sacrifice to start the party rolling, but Lorne just orders them to start mingling before chatting to a demon, Devlin, whom he knows.
Wesley and Fred watch Lorne remarking on his socialising skills and Fred admits she is no good at parties, helping herself to crudits and dip. Lorne approaches asking them to dance, declining Fred admits they are wallflowers and Lorne, who is slowly losing it, tells them they need a drink!
Lorne finds Angel in his office, sitting uncomfortably in his chair, and discovers he is watching ice hockey to which Lorne, mortified, reminds him he needs to get out there as he can't do this by himself. As he begins to rant, he suddenly holds his head in extreme pain as Angel questions if he is ok but he shakes his head and looks up saying, "Let's boogie sweetie pie".
On the dance floor Harmony spots Spike who refuses to dance with her, as they walk over to Angel and Lorne it is announced that the Archduke has arrived and some guests bow before him. At Lorne's instruction Angel gushes over Sabassis, telling him how thrilled he is at the Archdukes presence as Lorne greets Artode who is wearing a Pylean Suit made from Pylean skin!
Fred and Wesley are drunk and stumble around the dance floor whilst Lorne makes his way upstairs where Gunn is talking to a client. Remarking on his amount of energy Gunn wonders where Lorne gets it from and Lorne admits that he had his sleep removed by the company about a month ago; Gunn thinks this sounds great.
Downstairs Artode suspects that Angel has set a trap and is instructed by Sabassis to kill them all if he starts anything.
Eve finds Angel at the edge of the dance floor and praises him for his attention to Sabassis; he is quick to point out that it was an act and they exchange sarcasms before Lorne strolls by, rolling his eyes and telling them to get a room. Seeming to take him literally, they fall into Angel's office and start kissing.
Artode is in the bathroom, he looks up on hearing a noise just as the door is pulled off by an unknown assailant and blood splashes across the wall.
Act III:
Downstairs, the party is in full swing and Wesley and Fred twirl drunkenly on the crowded dance floor. Realising Artode is missing; Sabassis sends one of his minions to find him, bumping into Fred as he goes, who offers to fight him. Wesley practically carries her from the dance floor where she admits to him that she is totally drunk and asks how much he has had as he sways admitting he has only had a third of a bottle. Suddenly realising something is off they look for Gunn asking him if anything weird is happening as he turns around peeing on Wesley's shoes. Spike arrives announcing that he thinks this is a great party leading Fred to deduce that something is definitely wrong and they are sure Lorne is the common link.
Dragging a protesting Lorne into Angel's office they are shocked as Angel appears naked with Eve behind the sofa. Wesley drunkenly explains that they are all under some sort of spell, whatever Lorne has told them to do they are doing and Gunn suddenly remembers Lorne telling him to stake out his territory, he also recalls that Lorne had his sleep removed. Angel asks why he allowed them to do that and Lorne explains how difficult his job has been, all the hand holding, ego stroking has been too much and he couldn't handle it meanwhile, Eve can not take her hands off Angel. Angel says he will help Lorne and sends Fred and Wesley off to find Lorne's sleep so that they may restore it, Gunn to check out the other guests for any strange behaviour and he will stay with Eve as he wants more sex.
In the bathroom, Sabassis and his minions find the remains of Artode on the floor.
As Wesley and Fred search for Lorne's sleep in the lab, Fred tells him that they should be friends like they used to be and as Wesley agrees, Fred decides to begin now, hugging him. Wesley seems delighted until Fred asks him what he thinks of Knox leaving him uncomfortable.
Sabassis and his armed minions burst into Angel's office and Spike praises him for a fantastic entrance as Angel and Eve emerge from behind the sofa. Aiming poisoned darts at Angel, Sabassis, sure that Angel has killed Artode, informs him that it would put him in a coma for a week and instantly kill the others. Angel denies any knowledge of the death of Artode but Sabassis does not believe him and Angel is to face a public execution.
As they all head for the party area, Angel explains that whatever is happening, they are not behind it but Sabassis does not believe him.
In the lab Wesley studies sleep disorders for Empath demons as Fred finally locates the large tube containing Lorne's sleep. Wesley reads that the long term effects of loss of sleep on an Empath can be catastrophic, under normal conditions Lorne can read people destinies but now he is writing them and if the subconscious is severed for too long it can manifest.
At the party, Lorne attempts to explain to Sabassis that he may be responsible for the occurrences as suddenly there is a huge roar and a hulk like Lorne jumps down from the balcony as Lorne, horrified, says. "It's me!"
Act IV:
Hulk Lorne roars and hits out knocking Spike to the ground as Sabassis shoots him with the poisoned dart and his slave upon seeing his chance, runs away. Lorne begs for the monster to listen and stop but he punches him to the ground and Lorne realises, "Wow. I must really hate myself!"
Fred and Wesley wait at the lift, Fred asking about the button and Wesley realising he hasn't pressed it.
Back at the party, Angel instructs Sabassis to run as he attempts to fight hulk Lorne, only to be thrown against the wall and hulk Lorne then wards off Gunn's attempts by throwing him to the floor. Hulk Lorne seems determined to go after Sabassis and as Angel tries to beat him off Wesley and Fred finally appear with Lorne's sleep and Fred shoots it into Lorne's head. Collapsing to the floor he goes into a deep sleep and his alter ego disintegrates into particles as a bewildered Fred and Wesley come out of their spell.
The next morning at Wolfram & Hart, Fred is collecting glasses as Knox appears to tell her that he has fixed the stun grenade as Fred confesses that she wished he had been at the party.
In Angel's office, Lorne is sleeping on the couch and Eve is at Angel's desk as is Spike. Wesley is sure that the hulk Lorne was manifested from Lorne's subconscious, using Lorne's supernatural powers to get into the real world but as Angel wonders why it wanted to kill everyone he informs him that he thinks it was just acting on the conflicts that Lorne feels during sleep.
Eve finishes her call and makes to leave, seeing this Angel approaches her as he thinks they should talk but she nonchalantly informs him that it is not the first time she has had sex under a mystical influences and then leaves. Wesley asks how Angel is doing as they both glance at Fred and Knox having a chummy drink together in the lobby.
Wesley leaves as Gunn enters letting Angel know that Sabassis enjoys a little blood sport at functions so they are ok, no law suits. Angel disagrees, they are not ok, they are so busy focusing on danger outside that they have forgotten about what lies within and he is sure Wolfram & Hart is trying to change them. Gunn asks Angel not to sit in his desk chair, Spike thinks it is hilarious that Gunn urinated in it, but he is no longer under Lorne's influence...it is just funny!
Angel asks them both to leave so Lorne can sleep and checking on him he finds that Lorne is dreaming restlessly saying, "It's hard trying to be the host of the party." Angel whispers, "Stop trying to be" and leaves him to sleep.
