Episode 7, Season 5 Title: "Lineage"
Written by: Drew Goddard Directed by: Jefferson Kibbee Original Air Date: November 12th, 2003
Teaser:
In a darkened warehouse, Wesley sits opposite a man at a table; the one facing the camera, Emil, is flanked by two bodyguards, Dante and Philippe and is explaining how customer complaints are dealt with by killing, beating, torture. Wesley is impatient as he is meant to be meeting the distributor not the hired muscle to which Emil explains that his distributor is cautious and wants to verify the merchandise. Wesley clicks his fingers and Fred enters carrying a large metal briefcase; Wesley tells them this is his muscle as Fred takes out the TS-113 sniper rifle, explaining its modifications; the scope works along amplified thermal wavelengths and the firing mechanism has been replaced by a bylantine energy charge eliminating the need for conventional ammunition. Wesley confirms that 200 units are ready and Wolfram & Hart will make more once payment is received adding that Emil will get nothing until Wesley has spoke to his distributor so Emil gives Wesley a number to call.
Suddenly one of the bodyguards is whipped upwards, a chain around his neck and as a gun battle commences, Wesley pushes Fred out of the way, leaving her without a gun as he flies across the room, shooting the other bodyguard as a man completely dressed in black including black hood jumps down in front of Emil accusing him of double-crossing him. As Emil begins to speak the unknown man throws a chain which curls around Emil's neck, breaking it, then disappears only to jump out again at Wesley but as the fight begins Angel crashes in through the window taking over the battle. Angel overpowers the man breaking his neck, an electrical current swirling around it, and he pulls off the mask revealing a metal plate over his face, he is a cyborg.
Hearing Fred's groan Wesley and Angel run to her, discovering to their horror that she has been shot.
Act I:
In his office at the law firm, Angel furiously demands to know why Fred was at the warehouse, Wesley explaining that he needed someone who would not arouse suspicion and Eve stating that she is going to be ok but Angel orders Wesley to clear things through him in future before using any of his people. "Your people", asks a shocked Wesley before bowing his head and leaving the office as Eve deduces that Angel does not trust Wesley after stealing his son. Angel tells her that Wesley thought he was doing the right thing to which Eve sarcastically replies that it must be fine then, Connor is OK, Angel is happy but Angel is adamant that he just wants to be kept informed.
Wesley is deep in thought in his office as Fred enters; announcing that she has the all clear and they are taking the cyborg apart in the lab, Wesley is very apologetic about what happened and admits he should have protected her and she never should have been there. Fred feeling patronised, tells him it was not his call and is angry at Wesley as she feels it was not his job to protect her, suggesting that he stops being so valiant. Suddenly a man appears in the doorway behind Fred; it is Wesley's father who introduces himself to Fred as Roger Wyndam-Price leaving her feeling flustered at his having witnessed their argument.
Fred leaves the office and Wesley, flabbergasted, asks why his father is there and Roger explains that he and some former watchers have decided to reform the Watcher's Council and he has been asked to contact Wesley. Wesley wonders if they want him back but they have agreed that they will only take him back on Roger's evaluation and recommendation, hence his visit. Wesley is not interested stating that he is perfectly happy where he is but his father scoffs and Wesley is obviously nervous around him, but despite this he explains that Wolfram & Hart is no longer the evil law firm it was and they are trying to change things taking their work very seriously.
As they step into the lobby, as if on cue, the elevator door opens and Lorne steps out, chatting on the phone about the party he has been trying to organise all week, Roger rolls his eyes and as Lorne comes off the phone Wesley introduces Lorne as the Head of the Entertainment Division which his father dryly remarks must be useful in the fight against evil. Gunn approaches, introducing himself and informing Wesley that they are autopsying the cyborg in the lab, Wesley asks his father to join him.
In the lab, Fred explains to Angel that they have found cybernetics throughout the body and it seems human in terms of the central nervous system but the rest of the cyborg is a mystery at the moment and it draws the line between human and robot at which Spike quips that a human could have boffed a robot and it is not that uncommon! Fred hopes to crack the memory of the robot to ascertain its past history but it is an encrypted binary based system so may take time.
Wesley arrives and introduces his father who, when Spike approaches, states that they once met in 1963 when Spike was slaughtering an orphanage in Vienna. Angel approaches next stretching out his hand but Roger does not take it and glares at Angel who asks him to keep an open mind as they are really doing good work. Fred leads Roger and Wesley to the autopsy table, showing them symbols they can't decipher and Knox adds that there are traces of radiation too, Fred thinks it may be a bomb of some sort and explains to Roger that they need Wesley as this is his field. Wesley states that the pattern is of Hellenic derivation, early Moracian and he thinks it may be a battle prayer or a binding spell, touching it he adds that he needs to do a binding spell as suddenly he accidentally activates it.
Act II:
Knox asks if there is a trip mechanism but that is what Wesley has just touched and he calls for the building to be evacuated and tells Fred to get out immediately but as he escorts her to the door the bomb suddenly shuts down and Roger is standing over it. Wesley asks what he did as Roger confirms that the symbols were Drutrovic and explains the procedure for handling the cyborg's power core including how to use the failsafe, leaving Wesley deflated.
In Angel's office, Spike is making jokes about Wesley being head boy as Wesley explains what happened and Fred admits it could have happened to anyone of them but Wesley thinks they were lucky his father was able to correct the error. Angel asks where Roger is; he is being entertained by Lorne!
In the lobby Roger looks bored as Lorne regales him with tales of Judi Dench.
Fred decides to rescue Roger and Angel orders Spike to leave the office as Wesley, head in hands, admits it was a stupid mistake; he finds it hard to think straight when Roger is around. Angel understands how Roger has rattled him then hands Wesley a folder containing reports of assassins, which sound like the cyborgs, who took out a demon kabal in Jakarta and others who destroyed the Tenmar death chamber and Wesley wonders if they are good guys, deciding to research in the archives.
In the lobby Roger is talking to Fred about Wesley's childhood and a resurrection spell he wanted to cast to bring a bird back to life, admitting also that Wesley's mother thought he was a prodigy, a wistful look crosses Wesley's face which is quickly replaced by an uncomfortable one as Roger tries to belittle him and Fred laughs unknowingly. Wesley enlists Rogers help with research.
In Wesley's office, Roger asks personal questions about his feelings on Fred but Wesley is unwilling to discuss it so as Roger pushes he explains that the last girl he was with he had to chop into pieces after she had been stabbed to death in the neck; Roger thinks he is being sarcastic. Wesley picks up a source book and asks for the Saitama Codex as Roger looks on in amazement and wonders if Wesley knows the potential danger of the books and asks how he can have them displayed so openly on the desk. Wesley knows what he is doing and informs Roger that the most important books are locked in his vault becoming agitated as Roger continually questions him and pointing out that the books are safe as they are.
On the roof six cyborg assassins appear.
Eve steps into the lift and is startled when Spike appears asking why she is so interested in his movements lately. He tells her that he sees through her 'here to help cheerleader act' and knows there is more to her than meets the eye, to which she counters that the same applies to him unless he is happy to haunt the law firm for eternity. That is the whole point according to Spike as he figures he is trapped there for a reason, of which she is a part, and the amulet was meant for Angel, he was meant to be the ghost so why keep Spike there, but Eve just coolly states. "Who said the amulet was for Angel". Suddenly the power cuts out and they are in darkness as an alarm begins to sound.
Angel leaves his office asking what is happening as Gunn confirms that they have lost all power and communications and as the alarm stops beeping Gunn says they have lost security too as the cyborg assassins appear in the lobby and hold Angel and Gunn at gunpoint.
In Wesley's office, the door bursts open and as an assassin attacks, Wesley grabs a sword from the wall and fights him but is overpowered and slumping to the floor manages to throw his sword to Roger who continues the fight . Wesley rejoins and manages to throw the assassin off and taking the sword stabs the cyborg in the stomach as Roger points out that the cyborg was after the books. Grabbing the books, they head into the vault, Wesley stopping at the door to place his hand on the security pad and stating the password 'Elysium' before the main door will open. Roger compliments a surprised Wesley on his fighting skills and asks what they should do next, then as Wesley loads some books into one of the vault lock-ups, his back to Roger; he hits him on the back of the head knocking Wesley out. Taking the keys he opens a drawer in the vault and takes out a gnarled and knotted staff with a large greenish precious stone on the top, and speaks aloud, "Phase one complete, begin phase two".
Act III:
In the lobby, Gunn and Angel battle the cyborgs.
Wesley wakes up in the vault and after finding the books are still there he goes back into his office where the dying cyborg sits on the floor, electricity emanating from his wound.
Roger strides through the lobby and bumping into Fred, lies that Wesley has gone up to the roof to investigate a disturbance there and that they need to find Angel.
Wesley approaches the cyborg in his office, pulling off his mask and pushing the sword in further asking if he speaks before withdrawing it at the cry of pain. Wesley puts his hand on the self destruct mechanism demanding to know of Rogers plans. The cyborg tells him that he is bluffing as the explosion will kill Wesley; he knows this but it will also kill his father so that would be one way to stop their plan!
Gunn and Angel are still fighting, suddenly a cyborg wraps a chain around Gunn's neck, beginning to strangle him just as Spike arrives; trying to help he stands in front of Gunn to concentrate for a few moments before landing a punch that hits the cyborg square, knocking him over. Meanwhile Angel is losing his battle with another cyborg and Roger comes to his aid defeating the cyborg as Fred announces that Wesley is on the roof. Instructing Gunn to check on security Angel goes to the roof with Roger only to find Wesley is not there and Roger removes the staff from his pocket calling, 'Atistrata'. Angel doubles up in pain as white essence pours out of his body into the staff and he falls to the ground; Roger tells him that it was never about Wesley but about Angel.
Act IV:
Angel writhes on the floor as Roger advises him not to fight it then adds that Angel is ready for extraction, unaware as Wesley approaches from behind, grabbing the staff and pointing a gun at his father. Roger also has a gun and tells Wesley to stay away as he has no understanding of what is occurring but Wesley knows that he is using the 'Staff of Devosynn' to try to take Angel's will. Roger points out that Angel is a puppet, always has been, first to the 'Powers That Be' then to Wolfram & Hart and now to them but Wesley responds by listing Roger's deceptions, smuggling in a weapon (inside the dead cyborg), arranging the attacks and finally asking if he ever considered talking to Wesley about it instead. Roger did not ever consider this as he feels Wesley has failed him enough for one lifetime.
Fred runs onto the roof and over to Angel wondering what is happening as Roger asks how Wesley can work for Angel knowing who and what he is to which Wesley asks why his father can never trust his judgement; he has done everything his father ever asked and he has done it well. Roger feels humiliated but Wesley is quick to remind him that he never had any time for Wesley as a child and hasn't since and asks what galls him, that he was never as good at the job as Roger or that he might be better. As a helicopter approaches, Roger demands that Wesley give him the staff threatening to kill him, Wesley holds it over the edge of the roof admitting that he believes his father would kill him; he was raised by him so has no doubt. If Wesley drops the staff the crystal will shatter and restore Angel's will and so Roger, desperate now, grabs Fred but Wesley is ready and shoots his father 9 times then walks away in shock before retching. Fred looks on in shock then as Wesley turns back to her, Roger's body starts buzzing as electricity shoots out and he turns into a cyborg before their eyes.
Wesley approaches Angel's office and sitting next to him on the sofa asks if he is ok and explains that the effects should soon wear off, he tells Angel they went after him [Wesley] because the perception is that he is the weak link. Angel tells Wesley they are wrong, he does what he has to do to protect the people around him and he never understood before that Wesley has to make all the hard decisions, sometimes alone. Wesley just feels like a man who killed his own father and wonders how the cyborg knew everything about him, they may have had access to the old Watchers files thinks Angel and goes on to confess to Wesley that he did kill his actual dad. Wesley doesn't see the relevance and suggests that they get some rest then leaving Angel's office he is approached by Spike who confesses to killing his mum, Wesley is horrified but thanks him anyway and heads into his own office sighing.
Fred arrives and in an attempt to comfort him she tells him that a part of him knew it wasn't his dad. Wesley confesses that he was sure it was his father and that he was threatening Fred, he was going to kill Fred, so Wesley killed him. Fred begins to realise the implications of this but then Knox arrives to take Fred home and Wesley, tears in his eyes, tells her to go and sitting at his desk he makes an awkward call to his father to see how he is.
