Episode 11, Season 5 Title: "Damage"
Written by: Steven S. DeKnight & Drew Goddard Directed by: Jefferson Kibbee Original Air Date: January 28th, 2004
Teaser:
In a Los Angeles Psychiatric ward, Dr. Rabinaw is doing his rounds when a nurse rushes in to the nurse's station about a patient, Phillip.
Phillip is unconscious on the floor of his room and the doctor discovers that the nurse has mixed up his medication, giving him Thorazine instead of Lithium.
Peterson and Dr. Rabinaw unlock and enter another wing to check on the patient who received the Lithium as loud pounding can be heard down the hall. Suddenly the door bursts open, flying from its hinges and a young girl steps into the hall. Dana approaches the doctor as he tries to sooth her, telling her that everything will be fine. As he closes the gate between them, she crashes through it and attacks them. Dana makes short work of two orderlies and taking a saw from a nearby cart, she slices the neck of one and paints her face with his blood.
Act I:
At Wolfram & Hart, Gunn is on his cell phone making plans with judges behind the backs of district attorneys as Fred joins him in the hall. Gunn confesses to professional rivalry, as he admits that the download he received also included golf, where many cases are won ion the links and not in the courtroom, much to Fred's chagrin. Work the system before it works you; lives saved, disasters averted, they're doing the right thing, he assures her.
As they enter Angel's office, Wesley, Angel and Lorne are discussing Eve's fate. Although firing her is an option, Wesley sides with Gunn about the 'alleged' accusations of her parasite attack. As liaison to the Senior Partners, any intervention might not be in their best interest, so they decide to keep her to restricted access. Harmony enters, informing Angel of Dana's escape and that all evidence indicates the girl is possessed. Wesley wants to assemble the tactical team, but Angel wants to handle it quietly. Demonic possessions are a delicate thing as he has learned.
At the Psychiatric ward, Spike and Angel are surprised to see each other as they both step off separate elevators. Spike, hero of the people, has heard of the mishap but Angel wants to handle this, telling Spike to take his annoyance to the streets.
As both Spike and Angel meet Dr. Rabinaw, he shows them into Dana's room where dozens of drawings litter the walls. He informs them that her family was murdered when she was 10-years old. She was then kidnapped, tortured for months and found one day naked, bleeding, and in a catatonic state. Several months ago her condition changed. Increased levels of agitation accompanied by explosive outbursts of inhuman strength. Spike surmises that it's a demon possession and leaves to find her. Angel is looking at the drawings when he asks the nurse what isn't the doctor telling him. She admits Rabinaw has video taped all his sessions with Dana.
In a supermarket, Dana is eating from one of the shelves as a stock boy tries to stop her and she breaks his arm.
In the clothing section, Dana puts on pair of jeans and takes a shirt which causes her to flashback to her childhood ordeal as a security guard draws a gun on Dana.
Moments later, Dana, dressed, leaves the store holding the bloody saw.
Back at the ward, Angel and the nurse are watching the doctor's videos. Dana is manic and lashes out during the sessions, speaking in foreign languages. The nurse thinks it's gibberish, but Angel recognizes the language, it's Romanian.
At the market, the police have arrived as Spike surveys the scene. Smelling the trail of blood he takes off down the street in pursuit of Dana.
Wesley is in his office when Angel calls on his cell phone asking for the recent police sightings to pinpoint Dana's location. He informs Wesley that the drawings on Dana's wall where of demons with little girls. We see Dana walking in a warehouse, as Angel also informs Wesley of her Romanian babble. At the same time, Spike walks up on Dana and turns on his vamp face wanting to take this fight demon-to-demon, as Angel continues to tell Wesley Dana was speaking about being chosen, "She's not a demon Wes, she's a vampire slayer."
Act II:
In the warehouse, Spike and Dana begin to fight as he believes he's battling a possessed girl. But as she gets the upper hand and tries to stake him, she begins to speak in Chinese. He admits to not understanding and the fight continues until she tosses him from the four-story window.
As Spike lands on the pavement below, Angel drives up in the ally. Spike recovers to his feet, stating he has found Dana and that she's possessed by a Chinese demon, Angel tells him to stand down.
Back at Wolfram & Hart, Spike and Angel step off the elevator together, he can't get over the fact that Dana is a psychotic vampire slayer. Angel informs Spike that Wesley has contacted Giles and he's sending in his 'top guy' to handle the situation.
In Angel's office, Andrew is shocked at seeing Spike alive and he hugs him. Andrew begins to tell Angel how they know each other, but instead he wants Andrew to bring everyone up to speed on Slayer mythology. Andrew tells the tale of the 3-wise elders who took a young girl and imbued her with the power of a demon. The Primitive, the first Slayer, whose life was short lived forced the elders to found a way around that. As Fred states that in every generation the power lives on. The Potentials, each having vivid dreams of past slayers, awaken their inner slayer until they are called as the Chosen one. But Buffy had Wicca Willow assemble an army of Slayers out of all the Potentials. Now, Giles and the ex-Sunnydale alum have been training the slayers in Europe and Angel realizes that Dana's visions have, in her mental instability, suddenly become more real. Spike's had enough and leaves again.
In the hallway, Angel tries to convince Spike not to go after her. She's a slayer, the one person vampire's should stay away from. But Spike admits they did worse back in their day and he's off to save her.
By the Los Angeles docks, Dana walks the night as she sees flashes of her abduction and torture. A dockworker approaches her asking if she needs help but she just blankly stares at him.
Back in Angel's office, he thinks Spike might be right; they should go after Dana. Gunn informs Angel that witnesses say she was looking for something. Lorne offers that they go to the source of her pain, the house she was abducted from. Fred then informs Angel that Andrew has gone.
Back on the docks, Spike pulls Andrew from the shadows. He's joined Spike for the action and explains that Giles has been training him. He's faster, stronger, but Spike knocks him down and they discover the body of the dockworker.
Inside a residential house, a real estate agent is showing Angel and Lorne around. Lorne's psychic friend, Vernon, senses the evil feelings of the house. Fear, anguish, pain, as we flash back to the events that happened there. Vernon says that Dana does not know her abductor, he senses her fear and finds her under the bed. Angel asks where he took her and Vernon reveals, it's dark, "Floor is cool, air is think with dust and sickly sweet, like molasses, a basement."
Dana descends the stairs of the basement below a factory warehouse where she was kept. In a grate she removes hammers and other tools, and a box that contains several syringes. Quietly a voice say, "Let's try a blue one this time," it's the voice of Spike.
Act III:
Spike and Andrew continue their walk on the docks as he informs Spike what everyone from Sunnydale is up to. Xander is in Africa, Willow and Kennedy are in Brazil, although they are based out of San Paulo, whenever he calls they are always in Rio. Spike sniffs the air, tracing Dana's blood. He asks about Buffy and Andrew tells him that while rounding slayers up in Europe she settled down in Rome and that Dawn is in school there. Andrew then realizes that she doesn't know Spike's alive and offers to tell her. But Spike declines as Dana watches them from the roof.
At Wolfram & Hart, Angel asks Gunn to find out from the police who kidnapped Dana. All the details he can find about the guy.
Back at the docks, Spike and Andrew come upon a dead end alleyway. There's blood on the wall and Spike knows it's Dana's. She attacks and easily knocks Andrew out, taking the fight to Spike. Andrew recovers, trying to shoot Dana with a tranquilizer dart gun, but her slayer speed is too fast, it misses her and she runs off.
Spike easily tracks Dana to the basement. Descending the stairs, he sees her. She starts to talk, more to herself then to Spike, "No escaping, heart and head. It doesn't hurt if you stay still. Stab the heart, cut off the head; don't stop 'till you see dust." Spike tries to explain the images in her head are Slayer memories. Dana babbles on of the memories of Nikki, another Slayer Spike killed. She knows about William the Bloody, but Spike offers that that wouldn't lead to a good place. She attacks him, jabbing him with a needle and he goes limp unable to fight back. She chains him to some pipes as her memories flash to her identical torture as she brings over the box and injects Spike with another dose. His vision fades.
At Wolfram & Hart, Gunn informs Angel where their tactical team found the recent body, an industrial area. Lorne admits to no new news; everything is still smelling of molasses and Wesley offers up the ironic idea of a molasses factory. Fred realizes that 'cooking' Whisky will give of that smell and Wesley orders to check for a distillery. Just then, Andrew rushes in stating he and Spike where attacked and that Dana may have him.
Back in the basement, Spike starts to come to. Dana has the saw once again, "Can't touch me anymore." Spike, groggy and weak, lifts his arms and his hands have been cut off.
Act IV:
Dana walks the basement floor as Spike mumbles in his delirium. Dana beats him as he tries to explain that her visions are not of him kidnapping her, her vision are mixed up. She flashes back to the real kidnapper. Visions are mixing with her real memories, but she realizes Spike has killed two Slayers, and he admits to it and worse, but not of hurting her. She beats him again and is about to saw into his neck when Angel stops her. He tells Dana that the police shot and killed, Walter Kindel, the man who did this to her 5-years ago. Dana is still not coherent, as Angel tries to explain he's there to help her. But she knows she's a Slayer and she attacks Angel. They begin to fight, just as he grabs hold of her he yells, "Now!" Wesley and the tactical team shoot her with tranquilizer darts.
Outside, the medical team is taking Spike away on a stretcher into a waiting ambulance. Fred is on her cell phone informing the surgical team that they have Spike's hands.
Angel brings Dana out on another stretcher as Andrew steps up and says he'll take over. Angel objects, but Andrew counters, "She's a slayer, that means she's ours." As Angel objects again, a number of Slayers stand forth behind Andrew. Andrew tells Angel that they won't let him take her back to his evil stronghold. His orders came from Buffy. No one trusts Angel anymore, he works for Wolfram & Hart, "Don't fool yourself, we're not on the same side." Andrew thanks Angel, and the Slayers take Dana away.
Back at Wolfram & Hart's medical lab, Angel visits a mending Spike. Spike admits he was wrong in the way he handled Dana. He admits he never thought much about the nature of evil 'back in the day', it was the rush; he never looked back at the victims. Angel confesses he couldn't take his eyes off them. He was into the evil; it was art, the destruction of a human being. Spike states Dana's evil has made her a monster now, like them. Angel offers she's an innocent victim. "So were we," counters Spike.
