Episode 15, Season 5 Title: "A Hole in the World"
Written & Directed by: Joss Whedon Original Air Date: February 25th, 2004
Teaser:
Flashback to the past - Fred packs in her bedroom at home with her mom as her dad argues that a move to L.A is not a good idea, all she will meet are junkies and spoiled actors but she laughs as she is only going to the Graduates Physics programme at UCLA. Fred promises her mom she is going to learn everything there is to know and then some but she will be careful, she picks up her stuffed rabbit Feigenbaum to take with her.
In the present Fred yells as she fires a flame gun at a nest of demons on a wall, Wesley joins her and they finish the kill then begin flirting with one another before kissing. They break apart, smiling as Spike and Angel arrive, bickering this time because Spike put his sword through Angel's stomach in order to kill the demon bug which is still hanging from the Sword.
In Fred's lab Knox is surprised when a sarcophagus shaped stone relic, invoiced to Winifred Burkle, is delivered to the Science Department.
Act I:
Gunn is singing to himself in his office when Wesley arrives commenting on how cheerful he is and Gunn tells him it is because he is getting back together with Fred but as Wesley's face drops Gunn laughs as he is messing with him. Wesley asks if he is ok about his relationship with Fred and Gunn says it is cool as they are long over and he knows how Wesley feels about her, still he does warn Wesley not to hurt her. On to business and Gunn has dug up some information on Lindsey, it seems like the Senior Partners were worried about other schemes he may have had and so they disposed of him fast.
In his office, Angel and Spike stand nose to nose having a full on argument about fighting and teamwork as Wesley arrives asking if there is something they should all know but Angel says they were discussing theories as Spike asks who would win a fight between a caveman and an astronaut! Wesley points out that they have been yelling for 40 minutes before asking if the astronauts have weapons.
Fred inspects the recent delivery in her lab before asking Knox if he has run a spectral analysis which he has but they decide not to open it. Knox questions Fred about Wesley and she apologies but he tells her he is ok with it and he loves working with her, he leaves the lab to attempt to dig up some information on the relic. Fred looks down at the relic and is drawn first to a circular plate on the surface and then the small eye above it which holds a purplish precious stone, she reaches her hand towards the jewel and as she touches it the plate opens and a huge gust of air is released causing her to cough. As Knox runs to see if she is ok, she explains what happened and they see that the plate has closed.
Angel calls Spike to his office admitting he has had enough, things are not working out between them, he offers to set Spike up elsewhere complete with car, weapons, expense account and anything else he needs to 'fight the good fight' - just not in L.A. Spike likes the idea, sort of a James Bond but without the tux!
Fred and Lorne stroll across the landing chatting and as Wesley climbs the stairs to meet them she tells him of her encounter with the sarcophagus but assures him that medical have cleared her. Wesley wants to take her out that night and they make eyes at each other as Lorne tells them to 'get a balcony' and as he leaves Fred reminds him to find her for lunch. Lorne says he will just look where the sun shines and begins to sing, "You are my sunshine", but as Fred joins in he turns back looking alarmed as suddenly Fred vomits blood and collapses. As Lorne catches her Wesley screams for someone to get medical.
Act II:
The worried gang stand around Fred's sick bed attempting to make light of things but Fred asks what is happening and as Gunn tells her not to worry, Angel confirms they are doing blood work and Knox assures her they have isolated the sarcophagus for intensive research. Angel thinks they should get cracking and they all leave apart from Wesley who sits on the bed and holds her hand; he needs to hit the books but asks her to call if she needs him. Angel and Spike watch from the door where Angel is surprised as he didn't know about Wesley and Fred.
As Wesley joins the others and they head downstairs, Knox admits that whatever Fred has is mystical and doesn't match up with any of the pathogens in their archives. Wesley has been unable to match up any of the symbols on the sarcophagus as yet and they are cross checking everything. Gunn asks what Angel learned from the doctor and they are shocked when he tells them that a parasitic agent is working its way through Fred's internal organs and they will liquefy within a day. They need to get the box open to determine contents and origin but Knox admits they have even tried lasers but it will not open and it just turned up with no return address or information. Lorne wonders if it came from the Senior Partners and Gunn offers to go to the White Room to speak to the Conduit but Spike suspects Lindsey could be the culprit. Angel, Spike and Lorne head out to check on Lindsey as the others go to their respective research areas.
Fred lies in bed in a fever.
An employee enters Wesley's office requesting a file but Wesley tells him it can wait then as the employee complains that the whole company is working on Fred's case, Wesley pulls out a gun from the drawer and shoots him in the kneecap.
Gunn calls out to an empty space in the White Room; he knows someone else is there and is suddenly punched and as he looks up he finds it is himself he faces, the Conduit has taken on his form. Gunn asks what happened to the cat and is told the viewer determines the form of the Conduit and as they face off Gunn tells him that they can't do this to Fred. The Conduit punches him again before informing him that he is not Gunn's friend and the Senior Partners are tired of his insolence but Gunn is not after a favour, he offers his life in exchange for Fred's. The Conduit laughs, telling Gunn he already owns his life as he begins to beat him.
Angel, Lorne and Spike find a dishevelled Eve at Lindsey's apartment but she is adamant she knows nothing of what happened to Fred and asks if they have seen Lindsey. Spike punches her and Lorne orders her to sing so he can read her thoughts, threatening to kill her himself if she had any involvement. As she sings Lorne is sure she is clean although he imparts that her future does not look bright then as they leave she asks if they are planning on divulging her location to the senior Partners. Spike thinks she would be a good bargaining chip but Eve says they won't be able to help; if Wolfram & Hart don't have it there is no record - except what came before. Angel thinks the original demons were driven out of this dimension but Eve reminds him that there are some dead ones and they do not die the human way and she recommends that Wesley use his source books and ask for the texts that are forgotten; they need to find the 'Deeper Well'.
In his office, Wesley informs the gang of Fred's possessor; it's called Illyria, a great demon warrior who was murdered by rivals and left to drift in the 'Deeper Well', a burial ground for all the old ones, it is using Fred to gestate and it will kill her. The well is located in the Cotswolds and if they go to the source they have a shot at drawing the demon back in, so Angel and Spike take the company jet to England.
Suddenly Fred wakes up, eyes wide open and staring.
Act III:
Wesley sees Fred's bed empty and finds her in her lab where she tells him she has to work and she will not let this beat her before finally admitting she is scared. Wesley promises her they will beat this but she suddenly collapses and he holds her as she asks him to get the books he needs and take her home.
Wesley carries Fred into her bedroom at home and places her on the bed.
On the Wolfram & Hart private jet, Angel tells Spike he can't lose Fred and Spike says he won't but Angel sadly whispers, "I lost Cordy".
Knox enters Gunn's office; he thinks they could freeze Fred to stop it spreading and they decide to test it out in the lab to see if will work.
In Fred's bedroom, Wesley pours through his research and when Fred wakes up he tells her of Angel and Spike's quest to find her cure and how nothing will stand in their way. Suddenly she panics as she needs to find Feigenbaum, Wesley asks who that is but she breaks down when she can't remember so Wesley comforts her. She asks him to read to her and he calls forth a children's story from the book and begins to read.
In the Cotswolds, Angel and Spike find the entrance to the well in the middle of some woodland where they are faced with armed demon warriors - a battle begins.
Back in the lab at Wolfram & Hart, Knox admits defeat as the freezing technique doesn't work and he begins to admit his feelings for Fred which Gunn understands perfectly but Knox then says that he doesn't just care for Fred, he practically worships 'it', as Gunn looks at him and questions this he smiles darkly.
Back in the Cotswolds, Angel and Spike defeat the warriors and a man steps from the well that Angel recognises as Drogyn, who is the keeper of the well and is aware of the purpose of their visit. Drogyn orders Spike to ask him no questions or else he will kill him and Angel explains to Spike it is because he can't lie as Drogyn invites them into the well.
Gunn throws Knox across the table in the lab before holding him by the throat and accusing him of instigating the whole thing but Knox says he just played his part. Fred was chosen because he loves her and she is worthy of his god and the whole thing was set in motion millions of years ago and although Angel is on the right track he won't save her. Gunn tells him he doesn't know Angel but Knox says he doesn't mean he will fail to save her but rather he will let her die.
Act IV:
Fred quivers on the bed as she deteriorates and she whispers to Wesley that the light hurts her eyes but she doesn't want him to turn them off. She mumbles that the cavemen win.
Back in the Cotswolds, Drogyn leads Angel and Spike through a long tunnel whilst updating them on the history of the old ones who were pure demons and fought constantly to the death. Illyria, both feared and beloved, was laid to rest in the depths of the well until it disappeared a month ago which Drogyn suspects was predestined as part of Illyria's escape plan. As they reach the well Spike and Angel are amazed at its depth as Drogyn informs them that it goes right through the earth to the other side. Angel wonders how Illyria came to be delivered to Wolfram & Hart and Drogyn tells them it is very powerful and even after millions of years must still have acolytes.
In the lab, Knox admits there are not many of them left; he came to L.A as Illyria's kingdom had once been there and the demon was meant to teleport back to its source although it ended up elsewhere. He had help to get it to L.A then it got stuck in customs which Gunn took care of and as Knox waves the form in his face Gunn is horrified at what he unwittingly did in order to gain the permanent brain implant. Gunn is sure that Angel will stop it but Knox tells him they can only wait causing Gunn to lose his grip as he grabs a fire extinguisher, knocking out Knox before pounding him with it.
Fred writhes on her bed in agony as Wesley watches helplessly.
In the well, Drogyn realises the demon essence has been freed and admits that there is no power in the well to draw it back; the only way is for a champion to travel from the place it lies to the well and Angel tells him he is looking at two of them. Drogyn informs them that if they bring the sarcophagus back to the well it will draw Illyria from Fred but into every single person it passes between L.A and the well; hundreds of thousands of people will die in agony in order to save her. Angel and Spike are devastated and Drogyn leaves them with the decision as he goes to prepare the spell.
On her bed, Fred is in a state of delirium and begs Wesley not to leave her to which he promises he will never leave. She says she walks with heroes and Wesley, choked, reminds her she is one and she begs him to not let them take her.
Spike peers into the depths of the well and utters, "There's a hole in the world, feels like we ought to have known", as Angel stands in despair at the situation.
As Wesley cradles Fred they kiss then she asks if he would have loved her, to which, in tears, he replies that he always has. Fred, fighting to breathe, asks Wesley to tell her parents she wasn't scared but he begs her to fight and hold on. Finally she whispers, "Why can't I stay?" as she dies and Wesley breaks down. Suddenly Fred's eyes glaze over becoming crystalline and she kicks Wesley causing them both to fall to the floor where she begins convulsing. As Wesley sits up, peering over the bed Fred/Illyria stands up, holding out her arm to inspect her new body and announcing that it will do.
