Plot Angel, Spike and Gunn travel to a surprisingly unusual hell dimension to free Lindsey and find out what he knows of the Senior Partners' ultimate plans. With Illyria's army defunct and her plans averted, the gang accepts her as a dubious ally. Wesley, volunteering to be her guide and mentor, falls slowly into depression and self-destruction. Meanwhile, the Senior Partners send a new, unstoppable force, a new liaison and businessman, named Marcus Hamilton, to find Eve, and Gunn makes an important decision in an attempt to protect his friends... and save his soul.
Trivia * Mercedes McNab was added to the credits, because the show was going to be canceled. * Illyria mentions visiting a world with nothing but shrimp. This is a nod to _"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997) Superstar (#4.17)_, in which Anya and Buffy are talking about alternate realities, specifically a world with nothing but shrimp.
Goofs * Crew or equipment visible: In the Wolfram & Hart mystical holding dimension, when Lindsey's hand reaches for the basement doorknob, the crew and the rest of the studio are reflected in the doorknob.

Episode 17, Season 5 Title: "Underneath"
Written by: Sarah Fain & Elizabeth Craft Directed by: Skip Schoolnik Original Air Date: April 14th, 2004
Teaser:
Sitting alone in the boardroom at Wolfram & Hart, Angel calls Harmony to ask where everyone is; Wesley is babysitting Illyria, Gunn is still in the hospital and Lorne has been missing in action since Fred's death. As Harmony leaves, Spike appears, wondering why they have not made an appearance for this important meeting. He takes a seat at the table, briefcase in hand and asks what is on the agenda but then complains that he is on reconnaissance again; why can't he 'save the girl'? This reminds Angel of Fred and he recounts her past, how he found her in Pylea and how he wishes he had never brought her to L.A. where bad things always happen. He is angry with himself for coming to Wolfram & Hart, he knows the Senior Partners are up to something and he doesn't intend to wait to find out what it is.
Angel and Spike confront Eve in her apartment but she refuses to tell them anything and anyway her link to the Senior Partners is severed. Angel knows she is hiding from them, the symbols on the wall protecting her, and he threatens to expose where she is unless she gives him the information he needs. Just then there is a loud crashing noise and the walls start to shake as the symbols disappear, but this is not Angel's doing and Eve begs him to help her escape, promising to tell him everything.
The apartment door crashes open and a suited man stands at the door surveying the empty room and the open window.
Act I:
Lorne sits in a bar drinking seabreezes as the demon bartender sings to him. After reading him he admits to the bartender he is tired and scared to tell people the truth so he tells them what they want to hear. He confesses that he has been drinking since he realised a girl he loved was going to die, hoping it would take away his pain but the plan failed and he is now ready to go back to the belly of the beast to pretend he can help, because that's what he does.
Angel, Spike and Eve arrive at Wolfram & Hart and entering the lobby Angel instructs Harmony to put security on red alert, asking Spike to watch over Eve while he visits Gunn.
Entering Gunn's hospital room Angel asks if he has jurisdiction to protect Eve from the Senior Partners but Gunn tells him he doesn't know. Angel reminds him that he paid a high price for the knowledge he has and he should use it so Gunn tells him he has a proviso in his contract whereby he can take custody of a wayward employee and offers to make the call to sort it out. Before leaving Angel states that Gunn should feel bad for what he did and it will keep him awake at night but that is because he is a good man who signed one piece of paper in error, but Gunn confesses that although he had no idea it would be Fred, he did know there would be consequences. Angel tells him that he can't hide away in the hospital because this is never going to go away.
Wesley sits alone in the dark as suddenly Fred appears, kisses his cheek and asks him to tell her a joke. Wesley says, "Two men walk into a bar, the first man orders a scotch and soda and the second man remembers something he'd forgotten and it doubles him over with pain, he falls to the floor shaking, then through the floor into the earth and he looks back up at the first man but doesn't call out as they are not that close". Fred agrees that he always knows where he is and tells him this is only the first layer, finally asking if he would like to see how deep she goes.
Waking from his dream, Wesley finds Illyria in the dark room; she tells him he called Fred's name in his sleep and he asks if she ever has nightmares or if she ever even sleeps. In her time nightmares walked among them, laying out fears openly for everyone to see and now they are trapped in the heads of humans and she wonders what they did to merit such a fate. Wesley comments that she must be disappointed with this world before adding that he is not too enamoured either. She asks why he doesn't leave.
Arriving back at Wolfram & Hart Angel asks Eve, now under his protection, who she is. She confesses she is a child of the Senior Partners, created to do their bidding and Angel realises she is immortal. She states that she only knows what they want her to know, when they want her to know it, she may know things but it is locked up inside her head and she has no access to it. The funny part is that having spent years of his life researching the Senior Partners, Lindsey would have been able to tell them everything they needed to know, he may know more about Angel than Angel does. Angel and Spike suddenly realise that is why they snatched him up as Eve tells them he is not dead but in some hideous, awful hell.
Lindsey kisses his wife in bed, and then as his son runs into the room, he asks them what they are going to do today.
Act II:
Lindsey walks down his drive somewhere in suburbia, collects his paper, waves to a neighbour then re-enters his house.
Spike, Angel, Lorne and Eve are in Angel's office. Spike points out that there are many types of hell and wonders if it is even true as Eve has another motive for getting Lindsey back, but Lorne has read her and he confirms she is telling the truth. Angel is adamant that he wants Lindsey out but Spike thinks it will be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Suddenly Gunn arrives, he knows where he is and he can get them in.
Lindsey helps his son with homework in the family kitchen. His wife asks him to get a bulb from the cellar and he reminds her there is one in the hall closet but the one she needs is definitely in the cellar and she needs it now. Apprehensively he opens the door and heads down to the cellar as his wife smiles sweetly at him and, tentatively, he walks down the stairs in the darkness.
As Gunn, Angel and Spike set out, Gunn tells them how Lindsey got the tattoo idea from studying a guy who went off the rails in the Japanese division; he is sure that Lindsey has been banished to the same place, not a hell dimension but a Wolfram & Hart holding dimension. Gunn throws Angel the keys to the camero which drives them there unaided, freaking Angel out slightly. Gunn tells them that the car is built to get them there but once they have Lindsey they have to find the 'wrath' in order to get out. They enter a tunnel and come through the other side into daylight and Lindsey's street.
Back at Fred's house, Wesley attempts to persuade Illyria to leave which she says is not possible but Wesley points out that she should be able to walk any dimension she chooses. She admits that she has travelled many different worlds and he asks why she doesn't go to a world where she would be more welcome, goading her that she will never be welcome in this one. She lashes out at him, feeling claustrophobic in the confined space of the apartment and angry that he has challenged her. He asks her to go somewhere with him.
Lindsey, attired in the same clothing, walks down his drive, repeating the exact same events of the morning before, but as he enters his house Angel's car pulls up. As Gunn opens the door, Spike and Angel both hide from the sun but he reminds them it is an alternate dimension so they are safe. Lindsey's wife opens the door and invites them in, calling out to Lindsey. Lindsey, having no clue who they are, asks how he can help them so they introduce themselves before asking if he has heard of a law firm called Wolfram & Hart. He hasn't and when Spike tells him he is in hell and they are there to break him out, he thinks it is a joke so Gunn gives him the details. Asking if that means Trisha is not his wife and Zach not his son, he laughs, still believing it to be a joke but Angel tells him his whole life is a lie and seeing their serious faces he beomes nervous and asks them to leave.
Eve paces Angel's office, worried that they have not yet returned, she wants Lindsey back and she doesn't want to die. Lorne tells her she is safe under Angel's protection but she points out that the legal order will not matter as suddenly the alarm rings and the elevator door opens. The suited man steps out and is approached by a security guard but he punches his fist clear through his stomach as Lorne, Harmony and Eve scream.
Back at Lindsey's house, Angel assures him they are there to help, he suddenly notices the talisman around Lindsey's neck and as he rips it off, Lindsey drops to the floor before looking up and saying, "Angel". Trisha walks into the room, produces a machine gun and opens fire on them.
Act III:
As Trisha shoots at them they duck behind the sofa, as Lindsey watches in shock. Angel calls to Gunn and Spike to take Lindsey to the car and as they make their escape he runs at Trisha, who fires the gun relentlessly at him. Spike, Gunn and Lindsey find the car has gone and as a delivery van pulls up the driver opens fire so they run back inside where Angel and Trisha are fighting. Zach descends the stairs also armed with a machine gun and as he fires upon them they all dive behind the sofa once again. Looking for an escape, Gunn suggests the cellar but Lindsey says they can not go down there, they do anyway and he warns that they will all die, Angel says not today but Lindsey tells him, "Every day!"
Back at Wolfram & Hart, the suited man enters Angel's office and Harmony vamps out and jumps him from behind, attempting to break his neck, but he is too strong and throws her off as Eve and Lorne escape to the elevator.
In the cellar at Lindsey's house, the gang find weapons of torture and Spike discovers a pile of hearts on the floor, they are all Lindsey's. A fire burns behind a huge door and Spike wonders if this is the 'wrath' but they can not open it as it has a mystical lock. Suddenly Lindsey tells them it's coming and a huge armoured demon approaches, vamping out, Spike and Angel fight the demon as Gunn protects Lindsey. A violent fight ensues and Angel and Spike appear beaten when suddenly Angel sees Gunn place the talisman around his neck, he asks what Gunn is doing and tells him that he will not leave him there. Gunn knows the rules though and if one leaves one has to stay - this is his atonement. The door opens, and he instructs them to leave now because as soon as he forgets, the door closes. They grab Lindsey and run through the fire and as the door closes behind them, Gunn's memory fades away and Trisha calls to ask what he is doing down there.
At Wolfram & Hart, Lorne and Eve enter the underground car park, take a key from the box and run towards one of the cars where they attempt to escape. Just then Lindsey falls onto the bonnet, closely followed by Angel and Spike and as Eve rushes to hug Lindsey Angel gives Lorne the bad news that they had to leave Gunn behind. Suddenly they hear the heavy footsteps of the suited man on the stairwell and he barges the door down appearing before them.
Act IV:
As he approaches Eve, Angel stands between them but he just pulls a pen and a contract from his pocket then Eve tells Angel not to bother as it's over. She signs the contract as Angel asks what is going on and the man apologises for the intrusion, introducing himself as Marcus Hamilton, new liaison to the Senior Partners. Angel is confused, he thought Eve said she was going to die and she confirms that she will now as she has signed away her immortality. Marcus informs Angel he will be in touch as he has some excellent ideas but Angel warns him that the only ideas that count are his to which Marcus affirms that the Senior Partners are behind him 100%. He welcomes Spike to the team before leaving.
On the roof of Fred's apartment Illyria realises that Wesley doesn't worship her and he concludes that she really can't leave. Illyria notes that this world is so small and yet people box themselves behind walls but Wesley tells her there are worse things, truths that you can't bear, not every day. She tells him they [the human race] are so weak and he agrees they are.
In Angel's office Lorne digs the bullets from Spike's back as Lindsey and Eve watch from the sofa. Angel approaches and tells him he wants to know all about the apocalypse and the plans the Senior Partners have for him; Spike wants to learn his fate too. Lindsey says they know what he knows; the world is full of selfish and greedy beasts who live and die, but Angel is in no mood for the 'hell on earth' line that Holland Manners tried to sell him before. Angel points out that they can do this forever as he doesn't need to eat, drink or sleep and Lindsey says that is what he like to see, the Angel of old, taking no prisoners. He tells Angel it is already here, has been all along, they are living it, and it is 'the' apocalypse but Angel has been too stupid to see it. He asks if they were expecting a gong to announce it before adding that the starting pistol fired long ago and they are playing for the bad guys. He reminds Angel that every day he becomes more and more accepting of the ways things are but heroes don't accept the world the way it is, they fight it. Angel asks if he is saying that everything they do is a distraction to stop them looking under the surface. Lindsey confirms this, adding that every day Angel sits in his chair and signs his cheques, just as the Senior Partners planned but the war is here and they are already two soldiers down.
In the alternate dimension Gunn helps Zach with his homework, reliving the day just as Lindsey did. Trisha asks him to get a bulb from the cellar.
