Episode 19, Season 5 Title: "Time Bomb"
Written by: Ben Edlund Directed by: Vern Gillum Original Air Date: April 28th, 2004
Teaser:
In the holding dimension, Gunn is about to have his heart removed again when crashing and machine gun fire is heard above them. Illyria descends the stairs, dispatches the demon with one swing of her arm then removes the talisman from Gunn's neck. As Gunn regains his memory he turns to Illyria, mistaking her at first for Fred, before informing Illyria they can't leave unless someone takes his place.
The demon, wearing the talisman, prepares to cut out his heart on the table.
In Angel's office at the law firm, Wesley explains how he mentioned Gunn's situation to Illyria and she just opened a portal and went to get him. Angel is concerned at her reasons for helping Wesley wondering why she would risk herself for them but Wesley is quick to point out that, as a god, it probably poses her no risk. Angel feels that the only reason she is still here is because Wolfram & Hart reeks of power and she is looking to regain her status but Wesley is attempting to find a way to integrate her. At that moment a portal opens and Illyria and Gunn appear, Illyria immediately lifting Gunn into the air by his throat; she knows Gunn is valuable to them. Wesley, understanding her point, tells Illyria he is and they owe her a great debt. She drops Gunn to the floor and leaves.
Act I:
Gunn exits the lift at Wolfram & Hart. Crossing the lobby to his office he finds his desk piled high with paperwork so heads to Wesley's office where Wesley, surrounded by books, is researching Illyria. Wesley rushes around his office but stops briefly to admit he should apologise for stabbing Gunn but doesn't know how, Gunn says after having his heart cut out every day for two weeks he is over it. Gunn feels lost as everything seems upside down since he left and Wesley, still rushing round like some mad professor, tells him that they have to adjust to Illyria. Wesley stops suddenly, admitting that you can't look at her without seeing Fred. Gunn wonders if Wesley has any control but he scoffs at this, telling Gunn Illyria is completely self possessed, still thinking she is the god of the universe.
In the observation room, Illyria and Spike spar. Illyria notes that Spike had feelings for Fred and yet he is still able to strike at her but he knows she isn't Fred and has no problem. Illyria tells Spike that the world once shuddered and knelt at her feet but he laughs and she punches him for his lack of respect. In her mind humans have destroyed this domain, taking little pieces for themselves but she warns that even the ones with the biggest hoards are nothing; only to conquer all and live for eternity is winning. As Spike attempts to strike she throws a time warp at him, and as he lands she punches him across the room. Angel calls through the intercom for Spike and Illyria gives him permission to leave.
Angel instructs Spike to stop the sessions as Illyria is testing them and not the other way around. As they observe her through the window they see her hold her stomach as if in pain.
Gunn stares at the mountain of files on his desk before beginning to work through them. Lorne, attired in a very loud outfit and a pair of dark glasses, arrives to see how he is and explains to Gunn that he is on assignment, he has to follow Illyria. Gunn mentions how weird things are and asks if Lorne has spoken to Wesley lately and Lorne agrees that Wesley is crazy, completely catatonic on the one hand and the other, obsessed with all things Illyria. Lorne tells him Angel doesn't say much either, just then his walkie-talkie buzzes and Angel calls them into his office.
The gang sit around the boardroom table discussing Illyria and possible ways to get rid of her but when Angel points out that she killed Fed, Wesley jumps to her defence stating that she only infected Fred although admittedly she is a dangerous liability. Angel decides they need to look for a weakness and Wesley asks him if he wants him to find a way to kill her, which he does. Gunn is still coming to terms with the fact they are in the apocalypse, the 1000 year war of good versus evil in which, Spike reminds them, they are on the wrong side. Angel confesses that he doesn't even know who they are fighting.
Marcus arrives to advise them of the damage Illyria created in locating Gunn but Angel just smirks at him asking him to send the bill. Marcus says they will and that they have gone from being top earners to bottom of the pile and there will be consequences but in the meantime he has a matter for them to take care of and will be sending a file to Gunn. Angel says it is not priority but Marcus advises him to think of the profits. Wesley is slumped on his office floor when Illyria enters asking what day it is. As Wesley tells her it is Monday, she recalls that they have had this conversation before. She tells him he was her guide but also her betrayer, when he shattered the 'Olan Window' it changed the past and brought back a lot of painful memories for her. He admits he intended to alter time because he wanted to bring back Fred, the fact that Illyria would die in the process is just incidental, he asks if his betrayal bothers her but she says she is only bothered because she is bothered. He remarks that sounds very close to human.
Gunn enters Angels office carrying Marcus'case file which he says is some sort of demon pact. Angel asks if Gunn met Marcus before and Gunn recounts his visit with him in the basement, Angel asked what he did and Gunn makes it clear that he turned him down; he is not into making deals any more. Just then, Harmony escorts in a pregnant woman, Amanda, who is there about the demon pact. Amanda tells them that 'they' found her and told her that her baby was prophesised as a holy one. Gunn asks how much she knows about the Fell Brethren and she says that she is aware they are demons but they have been good to her, taking care of her during her pregnancy. Gunn, believing Amanda to be their client, warns her that the pact could be dangerous and there are bound to be hidden clauses but then three of the Brethren arrive, disclosing that they are the clients.
In his office Wesley still searches his books as Illyria holds out her arm, looking at it, mumbling that time doesn't exist until it bursts apart. Suddenly she clutches her stomach in pain and she is transported to the training room where Wesley aims a huge gun at her preparing to fire, then moving through time again she is in the same room at an earlier time with Spike and Angel.
Act II:
Back in Wesley's office, he asks her what is wrong. She pushes his desk against the window, trapping him as she states that he tried to murder her again. He doesn't know what she means swearing that he doesn't want her dead but she tells him she was there and she saw it.
Lorne reports in that Illyria has left Wesley's office and sets off to follow her.
Harmony offers refreshments to the brethren in the lobby but they just want to be with the 'holy vessel'. Harmony tells them not to worry as Angel will take care of everything.
In the boardroom, Angel and Gunn advise Amanda it is not too late to back out of the contract. She assures them she has thought it through and, although it seems weird giving up an unborn baby to a supernatural cult, their entire nation believes her baby to be the chosen one and they will care for him better than they could and he will be someone important. Amanda's husband was hurt at work, suffering brain damage, and they are unable to afford to take care of the baby and, as the brethren have offered to make him well, she wonders how she can turn it down. Gunn sighs and leaves, entering Angel's office.
As Angel follows him, Gunn tells him he doesn't feel well and that the worst part of being in the house in the holding dimension was not the basement but the fake life that happened upstairs. He asks if the work they do at the law firm is just hiding the horror because he can't stomach it and Angel assures him it isn't but Gunn must stay focused because they need to figure out the big picture and plot the next move. Gunn says this is their next move as Harmony enters with the news that the brethren are becoming impatient. Angel asks her to send them in and goes back to the boardroom.
In the lab, Marcus approaches Wesley, he wonders if anything has turned up on Illyria as they have concerns too. Marcus notes that Wesley is the closest thing she has to a friend and lets it slip that the partners know Illyria and they don't want her here either. He advises Wesley to look at the Low Emanation Scanner readouts and doing so he finds that he is able to track her movements.
Lorne follows Illyria down the corridor asking when she realised he was following her, she is angry that Angel is playing games.
The Fell Brethren greet Amanda in the boardroom, gushing over her excitedly, as Gunn reads through the contract. As they prepare to sign, Gunn suddenly discovers a clause he is unhappy with, on the eve of the child's 13th birthday he will be prepared for the rites of 'gordabach', he explains to Amanda that this is a ritual sacrifice, as one of the brethren becomes angry. At that moment, Illyria storms in demanding to speak with Angel and he takes her out of the room. Striding down the corridor, he turns suddenly and warns her not to interrupt his work. She asks what magic they are using on her, impressed by its power, but points out that her death will not prevent theirs as she lifts him off the ground. As she leaves she whispers that he doesn't know yet as it is too early.
Angel heads to the lab, where he informs Wesley and Spike that Illyria is out of her mind. Wesley and Spike tell Angel that Illyria is overloading, her human body can no longer maintain her demonic form and she is going to self destruct soon but the good news is that as she cracks they can get to her. Wesley shows Angel a large gun-like weapon called a Mutari Generator which will draw out all her essence and powers. Angel just wants confirmation that it will kill her which Wesley gives. Spike shows them the tracking device; she is in the training room.
They enter the training room to find she is not there and as Spike begins to speak he is suddenly dusted as Illyria stakes him from behind. Wesley aims the weapon at her but she throws the stake at him, killing him before turning to Lorne and punching her fist through his stomach. As Angel vamps out and attacks her she grabs an axe from the wall and decapitates him, turning him to dust.
Act III:
Wesley and Lorne lay dead on the floor as the pain hits Illyria once more and doubling over she is suddenly back in the corridor arguing with Angel, then as the time shifts once more she is back in Wesley's office. Confused, she tells Angel he wasn't here before as Wesley asks what is happening. As the pain hits again Illyria and Angel are transported to the basement in the holding dimension where Gunn lays on the table. Illyria tells Angel he has been swept up in her wake and angrily demands to know how they managed to tear her time line to shreds and put it back together out of sequence, forcing her to live the same sequences over and over. Angel tells her it isn't them but she punches him across the basement. Angel approaches her, now furious and tired of her preaching, he warns her that they will find any way they can of controlling her; it is his kingdom not hers. Suddenly she screams in pain.
Back in the training room, everyone is dead except Angel and Illyria. She scoffs at his efforts to murder her and as Angel looks at the bodies of Wesley and Lorne, he remembers that he is next but she says no, he was last. He asks why and she realises that he is from an earlier point in the time line which is impossible. Confused, he says they attacked her but she states that she didn't give them a chance, which you learn when you become a king. She tells him he is a slave, too moral and trapped in the web of 'The Wolf', 'The Ram' and 'The Hart' and if he wants to win a war he must serve no master but his own ambition. In pain again, she grasps her head, realising that her power is too great and already knowing the outcome as she has lived it before. Angel tells her that if they are in a paradox she can change the outcome but she begins to crack open, a blue light emanating from her body before she explodes.
Angel is back in the corridor with Spike and Wesley, preparing to enter the training room. He tries to explain what is happening but they don't understand and they enter the room, followed by Lorne. Angel tells Wesley that she is travelling through time and she knows they are going to attack her and try to kill her and Wesley admits she told him that too. As Angel looks around the room, he realises what is about to happen and pushes Spike out of the way just in time, the stake stabbing him in the stomach.
Act IV:
Angel asks Wesley to lower the weapon as he explains to Illyria that he knows she is about to kill them all after which she will self destruct. He tells her she is no longer a king, her domain has gone, he saw her explode which was powerful enough blast him back through time and he has no idea what it does to the building but he can not allow her to destroy his kingdom. She asks if they are asking her to allow them to murder her and Angel is shocked when Wesley tells her the weapon will not kill her but only draw away her energy safely so that she may live. She knows that Wesley tried to destroy her and bring back Fred and he admits that was true but he failed and she is all that is left. She tells him she is her power and kicks the weapon from his hands, sending Wesley crashing into Angel before attacking Spike, but he deflects her punch throwing her against the wall. She alters time, slowing them all down but as the pain strikes once more she loses her hold. Angel tells her she can alter her path whereas trying to be what she once was will destroy her. She will not give in but suddenly her face begins to crack, the blue light radiating out and, as she blames the human race for her fate, Wesley uses the weapon to take away her power. She falls to the floor.
Illyria lies on the floor of the training room as Wesley and Angel observe through the window. Wesley says her physical strength will have decreased but she may continue to try and conquer. He is going to stay with her, which is not to Angel's liking, but Wesley tells him he is not in love with Illyria but he does need her, admitting it is weird. Angel recalls her words, "Serve no master but your ambition", and admits that Wesley may have been right about Illyria being a resource.
Gunn argues with the head of the brethren in the lobby as Marcus tries to appease the other two. Angel arrives, taking the contract from Gunn and informing him that the baby belongs to the clients. Gunn is shocked and asks Angel what he is doing. Angel replies that he is doing what they are supposed to, serving their clients, with that he leads them into his office and closes the door.
