Hmm, Season 2 is always a tough one for me to discuss in terms of its place in my affections. The reason being is that unlike many, I don't hold it quite the high praise that others do. When it gets going it is really good, but it does take a while.
Season 2 pretty much kicks off quality wise where Season 1 left off 9which is no bad thing). The introduction of Spike and Drusilla to the mix, and their relationship to Angel, certainly broadens the canvass but the storylines are by no means epic, either structurally or emotionally, quite yet. So it's good, watchable even, but not great.
However, cometh Angelus, and the whole show ups its game. Suddenly the parts fit together and the epic nature of the storyline clicks into sharp focus and what was a fairly enjoyable if light series became a very dark and brooding one. David Boreanaz has never really made an impression with me as an actor but to his credit, he hams it up superbly as Angelus and the twisted love triangle and the jealousy of Spike, is well played by all concerned.
As for the episodes, after Angelus appears the quality goes up but up until then they are fairly average. Watchable, but average.
So for me a season of two halves. The first half enjoyable but slight, the second meatier and more satisfying. I guess as a whole the season for me just doesn't gel the way seasons 3-5 do. But it is very good when its good.

season 2 is a bit of a strange one. individually the episodes werent as good as they are in other seasons in my opinion, but the season as a whole kicks much butt. when questioned i usually say this season is my least favourite (aalthough still good) of the show because it contains the most episodes that i felt were flops but the seasons story arc is superb. i agree with ambersknight; the second half of the season was far better than the first.
