Okay, so a new Buffy movie, a reboot of the franchise more accurately, has been announced by Warner Bros. None of the tv show cast will be involved nor will Joss Whedon, who understandably isn't entirely happy about that.
Firstly, regardless of my disagreements with some of Joss' decisions, I do think that he should have been given first refusal on a Buffy script or director's chair. Whether or not he chose to involve the tv cast or went for a complete reboot would have been an interesting debate, but I think he should have been given the right of refusal before anyone else was brought in to write or direct a Buffy movie. Whilst it is true Joss cannot make a Buffy movie himself as he does not own the character of Buffy, the Kuzuis don't own the rights to any of the characters other than Buffy. So the film cannot have a Giles or Willow for example, without getting Joss' consent and paying him for the privilege. So I think its bad form that he wasn't asked. Personally, I'm not sure I'd go and see a Buffy film with Joss attached to the project, but it still should have been his right for first refusal.
However, having said that, I'm not prepared to join this jihad against the WB or the film makers for wanting to do a reboot. Already fans are calling for a boycott and saying it will be a terrible film. How do they know, having not seen a cast list, director assigned, a finalised script or a budget for the film? I won't condemn a Buffy film that hasn't been written, cast or made yet, simply because it doesn't have certain people attached to it. And as much as I respect Joss as a writer he's not the only one capable of writing Buffy, or directing a Buffy movie.
So I am reserving judgement until there is something to actually judge as good or bad. This early in the day, its simply not feasible to condemn a film that hasn't even begun yet.
