Teaser
“I really couldn't help but notice all the goats.”
In an abandoned building the sound of bleating goats echo through the walls. Angel follows the sound into a room packed with the same and finds two men with white aprons reading from a book, oblivious to Angel's presence as they try to read directions for the midnight sacrifice. The ceremonial dagger to be used to bleed the goats is missing but it turns up in Angel's hand as they finally turn to see him. He turns vamp face and in a flash, he chokes the men against the wall. He knows the building is owned by Wolfram & Hart and wants to know what the sacrifice is for, but the men have no idea as they were just paid to do the slaughtering and prayer by midnight. To put a bend in the firm's plan, he destroys the items.
Act I
“Scam?! The back of your kid's head was blinking!” At Angel Investigations, Cordy is beaming with the good news as Gunn and Wes, still recovering from his injuries in a wheel chair, stand by. Stephanie, a client's daughter has been successfully deoculated of her third eye in the back of her head with a curative charm. The mother, Francine, smiles cautiously, but offers no hope for paying the trio. She is following her husband's advice that Gunn, Wes and Cordy are running a scam because everyone knows there is no such thing as demons or eyes that appear behind their daughter's head. She flat out refuses to pay and the crew stands in disbelief as both walk out the door. Unable to do anything to stop them, Wes reasons that most people will never realize what truly takes place beyond comfort of the ordinary. Gunn takes off to do good at his neighborhood because he can't do any in the office.
At Wolfram and Hart, the firm is bustling with activity because the seventy-five year review will take place on Friday. Lilah is up in arms, adding last minute evil doings to their portfolios to be spared the heavy hand of the Senior Partner, but Lindsey isn't sweating it at all. Lilah is worried about Dru and Darla, because the she-vamps are considered screw-ups in their portfolios and is worried that they may show up at such an inopportune time.
“I think I'm done helping you now!” Across town at Kate's precinct, Angel visits Kate to alert her to all of the rituals taking place around Los Angeles thanks to W&H. Angel knows something's up and needs Kate's help. Unfortunately, Captain Atkinson from precinct 2-3 has filed a formal complained because Angel beat him up. Kate is partially blamed for giving Angel access to the Captain and this is a great excuse for her superiors to place Kate on the plank. She is now on desk duty, pending a hearing on Friday. She also pulls out the file on the murder of the firm's lawyers and rants to Angel about how farenzics believes that the killers were 'locked in' with their victims. Helping Angel is the last thing she wants to do.
Lindsey returns to his apartment after a long day at work as Darla relaxes on the couch, still recovery from Angel's attempt to burn her and Dru. Before Dru skipped town, she went to Lindsey to let him know where Darla was hiding. Scars are still evident on her face and Lindsey offers a bottle of human blood to hasten the recovery. Darla takes advantage of Lindsey's ritual of showering after arriving from work to nose through the confidential files of the review.
At the Caritas Bar, Angel arrives to knock up The Host for information on the rituals. Angel also notices the karaoke bar is teeming with lawyers, specifically from W&H. The Host is hesitant because he considers his readings confidential. He obviously knows exactly what's going on with all the readings he's providing for the lawyers who want to know if they'll survive the review, but he finds a loophole to help Angel and reveals what he heard in the bathroom. He explains that every seventy-five years the firm goes through a review by a Senior Partner, who really isn't all that lenient. It's not much to go on, but that's all the Host is willing to offer.
Act II
Moments later, at the Caritas Bar, as two lawyers sing, Angel returns anxious to know more. Even though the Host considers his readings confidential, he gives in to Angel, knowing there is no other way that Angel will find the facts he needs, so he only gives him the following words: The Band of Blacknil and home office - which could be the source of the firm's evil. The Host also adds, "They'd really like to see you dead." Across the floor the lawyers are eyeing Angel with eyes that could kill.
Angel returns to the Hyperion Hotel and rummages through all of the files and shelves looking for books that will offer help, but he realizes they left with Wes. In frustration he realizes where he has to go to find the information he needs.
“Don't make me move you.” Moments later, Angel stomps into the office of Angel Investigations and heads straight to the bookshelves as Cordy and Wes watch in astonishment. He shoves Cordy aside and grabs the book he needs. She grabs it back and refuses to hand it over. Wes rises from his wheel chair, "Just give him the d**n thing. Let him get the hell out." Cordy slams the book against Angel's chest and he leaves as fast as he came. Wes returns to his wheelchair but his side is bleeding, "Cordelia! Ambulance!"
At Kate's hearing, she is asked to explain her actions concerning several cases with a "bizarre and macabre nature." Kate's attitude has changed dramatically and the panel believes that her father's death has also affected her performance. Kate can't offer explanations, who would believe demons and vampires? She is fired but is offered severance pay and psychological counseling.
Across town, Angel returns to an old friend, Denver, the cool cat from the past that helped Angel with the Thesulac demon over forty years earlier. An aged Denver is still sitting in front of his T.V. manning his bookstore. He's become a changed man after Angel's first visit. Seeing a vampire help out humans changed Denver's perspective, but Angel reveals his failure in helping out those humans. Denver is optimistic, "The point is you tried." Denver gets to work and through research, he surmizes the Senior Partner is a Kleynach demon because dark entities can easily manifest themselves in this form since no conjuring is required. All the entity needs to manifest is the Band of Blacknil, which is a nondescript ring that enables the wearer the ability to travel back and forth between dimensions. The ring can help Angel get to the home office-which both believe to be hell, to kill the source of the firm's evil. Denver realizes out loud, "You're gonna try to go down there and destroy the whole lot of 'em." Angel needs the ring, but to get it he must kill the Kleynach. The way to do it is by grabbing the demon by the neck with a special glove that was blessed by all the powers of light. Denver picked it up in 1975 at a yard sale in Covina. He goes to his kitchen because he's been using the glove as an oven mit, and returns with a big smile happy to help the vampire with the soul once again. As Denver hands it over, unknown to him Darla, from behind, impales him with a sword. Angel tries to catch Denver, but the sword is long enough that it also catches Angel and impales him with Denver. Both fall to the floor, Denver dies, but Angel simply lies there as Darla retrieves the glove, "That ring's not about vengeance, Angelus. It's about power-- we'll get to the vengeance part later," and walks out of the bookstore.
Act III
Wes has returned to his apartment to recover from popping his stitches. Virginia is by his side and is struck by the danger involved in his work. She questions, "Does it always seem as if it's a battle worth fighting?" She mentions giving up his current line of work for something else. He catches on and asks, "This is... difficult for you, isn't it?" But Virginia doesn't understand, "I just don't like to see you hurt." Wes holds Virginia careful not to hurt his wound and clarifies, "No. I mean ?.breaking up with me."
Across town, Kate returns to her apartment clearly distraught and pours herself a drink. She gazes at all of the mementos from the job that was a loved career: photos, medals and awards. Suddenly, she smashes them with her hands.
At the firm, Lilah is running late and with two guards by her side hurries up the stairs to the entrance. Angel surprises Lilah and quickly takes out the guards. "I want the same thing from you that I took from Lindsey," and reaches for her hand. He wants her to take him upstairs and needs her fingerprints to get through all the security. As she gains access to the elevator, Angel grabs his side in obvious pain. Lilah notices his flinch.
At the same time, Wes calls in to Cordy that he won't be coming in the following day. As she goes out, the phone rings again and is surprised to find Francine calling. She's willing to pay now and Cordy offers to drop by to pick up the personal check. Unknown to Cordy, as Mrs. Sharpe hangs up a demon is by her side. She informs him, "One of them is on their way here now." The demon seems satisfied and he snaps her neck.
Inside W & H, everyone is standing by as the ritual is starting. Nelson notices Lilah's absence and informs Lindsey that it's not a good sign, but a second later a security alerts them to the presence of a vampire. Angel walks in with Lilah by his side and Lindsey spots them. He quickly alerts everyone to Angel's presence and she breaks free of him by elbowing his side. Angel quickly scans the crowd and finds Darla in a black wig and glove in hand. Angel pops open a bottle of holy water and throws it in her face. She turns vamp and attacks Angel. As Darla and Angel fight, the Senior Partner appears. Angel obtains the glove and jumps toward the demon grabbing him by the throat. The guards quickly scramble to stake Darla but Lindsey steps in and saves her. Darla's plan foiled, she leaves. Angel and the Kleynach demon crash through the window and the demon disintegrates beneath Angel's gloved hand. Angel falls down fifteen floors and lands with a thud, while a second later the ring hits the pavement with a ping. He puts on the ring and an elevator appears. The only witness is a homeless man with a cart full of his belongings.
Act IV
The elevator door opens and Holland Manners greets Angel. The ex-Vice President of Special Projects will accompany Angel on his ride to the home office. Manners wastes no time in mocking Angel's plan. This is a one-way trip, considering Angel's goal to destroy the root of all the evil of the firm. Manners reminds him about the apocalypse written in the prophecies that Angel is supposed to halt. He cackles, "We have no intention of doing anything as so prosaic as winning." This catches Angel's attention, "Why fight?" Manners responds, "That's really a question you should be asking yourself... We go on... Our firm has always been here in one form or another." The elevator screeches to a soft halt and the doors open. Expecting hellfire and brimstone, Angel is surprised to be in the same place he started. The home office is the current world. "You see if there wasn't evil in every single one of them out there, they wouldn't be people. They'd all be angels." The vampire with a soul is stunned to speechlessness. He drops the glove and begins to walk through the streets of Los Angeles seeing with new eyes all of the evil in people.
As Angel walks a mirage of images transpire: Kate is home taking bottles of pills from her medicine cabinet; Wes is home watching television and Cordy turns off the light, leaving to pick up the check, unaware of what possibly awaits her.
Angel finally arrives at the Hyperion as the phone rings and the answering machine takes the call. It's Kate offering a few last words. He quickly turns the volume down and goes upstairs to his bedroom. He walks in and senses Darla's presence. She is there for the ring and he drops it on the floor. As she runs to retrieve it, he grasps her arms and slams her against a wall, "Maybe what you really want is this." He begins to softly kiss her, but she pushes him way believing it's one of his sick games. He takes Darla once again and this time pushes her onto a table, "I'm not playing. I just want to feel something besides the cold." He kisses her passionately, but she giggles and Angel doesn't like being laughed at in his moment of vulnerability. So he throws Darla through glass doors that crash open into his bedroom. She finally shows some fear, but he only offers, "Don't you feel the cold?" He takes her once again and finally seems to make his intentions clear, "It doesn't matter – none of it matters." They fall on the bed, tearing off their clothes and Angel continues to give himself to Darla.
Later in the night a storm is brewing outside. Inside, Darla is asleep, but Angel jolts up awake. He looks confused, in definite pain, realization and shock. Can you say 'Angelus'?
