TEASER
In a posh LA restaurant, Cordelia, Wesley, Gunn and an empty chair are having a celebratory dinner over Cordy landing a national television commercial. Reverting from the mirrored wall we see that Angel is also in attendance although uncomfortable with the public exposure and costly appetizers. Who knew Sashimi Couscous could cost $19.00. I'm not cheap. I'm just old, explains Angel. As Wes and Gunn discuss the best way to kill a Haklar Demon from Cordy's most recent vision, Angel is distracted when a lady walks by wearing, what he believes to be, a Brahanian Battle Shaw woven from the skins of dead children. He accuses the woman of being a Voctar Witch but Cordy comes to his rescue explaining that he's from France and knows nothing of her $1,000.00 Laura Mina original. Back at the table and happy not to draw any more attention to them, Cordy then proceeds to topple the entire table as she collapses, wolfing up her Sushi. With genuine concern Angel asks, They'll take that off the bill, right?
ACT I
In the office of Angel Investigations, Wesley is on the phone to his father, tentatively wishing him a happy birthday. Wes also informs dad that he has been put in charge of the group as its new leader. There is major disappointment in Wesley's voice as he assures his father that he won't get fired this time. The conversation continues uncomfortably for Wesley and just as he cradles the phone Gunn walks in, "Ah, English Sr.? but Wes covers up his hurt feelings and falsely passes on his father's well wishes.
On Stage 6 of a television studio back lot Angel is awkwardly getting in the way of the production crews. He passes a beautiful actress in naught but bikini to stand awe struck by the sunlit beach scene. As he steps onto the sand he tilts his head back, closes his eyes and basks in the faux sunlight when Cordy appears and demands to know what he's doing. Getting a tan. Not bursting into flames. Angel actually needs more info on the Haklar demon but the director interrupts their conversation and Angel is none too happy with the treatment he dishes on Cordy as he tells her to disrobe down to her own scant bikini. Pushing her luck with the director and her career, Cordy tells Angel to leave.
Back at Angel Investigations, Wesley is pacing the hall when Gunn draws him back to the living by asking the specs on the Haklar demon. Wes begins a long homage on how the demon descended from the Klenzer Order who awaken during alternating full moons to feed and mate. Interesting, but Gunn wants to know how to kill it! Standard slice and dice, replies Wes. Just then, Gunn's old buddies Rondell and George walk through the doors needing Gunn's help with a pack of vampires making MacKenzie Park their new personal restaurant and feeding on the homeless there. Gunn agrees to help but when Angel arrives with the location of the Haklar who's living in the North Shore of Lake Hollywood he's caught between loyalties. With a 5K race happening in half an hour and they have to motor now. Gunn bails on his buds but promises to hook up when he's done.
In the inner office, Angel gathers the weapons but Wes notices his disturbed look. Angel rants about why Cordy would want the kind of life of an actress and being treated like a commodity. As Gunn joins them Angel explains about her taking the director's 'crap' and having to wear only 'a flimsy swimsuit that covers . . . nothing,' giving the boys quite the visual and causing a moment's pause. Right then, off to kill the demon!
Meanwhile, at Caritas, The Host is wailing to Stevie Wonder's 'Superstition' and bringing down the house. Literally, when a mysterious portal opens behind him on stage and out ushers a veracious demon.
ACT II
Caritas, and the demon is wreaking havoc, or that may be just reeking. Finally it runs out of the bar as The Host tries to calm his patrons as well as himself in that stunned, Mayorly-I-just-lost-my-Faith sort of way.
Back on Stage 6, Cordelia is in the middle of another take when the director yells, Cut! He berates her in front of the cast and crew as she is once again in the other actor's light and if she would just, 'bend over more,' everyone would be happy.
Angel and Wesley have returned to the Hyperion slightly worse for wear. Cordy is sitting quietly and Angel apologizes for his actions at the studio but she realizes she was being taken advantage of. They inform her that Gunn went to help his boys and Angel explains Wes took quite a blow from a power walker who felt they were disrespecting the Haklar's culture by killing it. Just then, The Host rushes into the lobby. He needs Angel's help to stop the Drokken demon, something they are not too familiar with, who by this time is getting pretty hungry.
On the other side of town, in the clubbing district, the Drokken has found his feast as he kills any and all in his path.
The Host continues his saga. Angel takes command but with a 'uh hum' from Cordy apologizes for stepping on Wesley's toes, but Wes hasn't pulled it together yet and concurs with Angel's plan. As Cordy looks on the verge of getting sick again Angel explains to The Host it's the expensive appetizer but it's another vision, this time of a girl/books/a necklace, she's in the public library. The Host feels his Drokken issue is in first position here but when Cordy mentions a portal, the gang has a connection and Angel asks The Host to come along.
Gunn enters an abandoned building in the nastier part of LA as he asks Junior where everybody is. Walking through a silent crowd of his street family, they slowly part and reveal to him Rondell, dead on a couch. He has been bitten in the neck by a vampire.
As the gang enters the Public Library, The Host is feeling a tad of deja vu. Trying to lighten the moment, he invites Angel to an Elton John concert but Angel doesn't do 'big and crowded.' Suddenly a librarian screams. Duh, big green demon with horns walking about! She rationalizes that he must be for the children's reading program and loves the costume -- except for the fake horns of course, not very realistic. Cordy asks the woman about the girl she saw in her vision. The apple necklace Cordy describes reminds her of Fred, Winifred Burkle, but she disappeared 5 years ago. She was studying to be a Physicist and was cataloguing in the Foreign Language section.
Cordy, Angel and Wesley enter the Foreign Language room not really knowing where to begin. The Host arrives moments later elated by the elegant Reading Room and that he might just show up with Harry Potter for the little tikes. Cordy discovers the book Fred was reading and Wes looks over her shoulder to read its obscure title, Shrsqwrn. What language is that? he asks. Cordy states that the book was last checked out May 6, 1996 and returned the next day, the day Fred disappeared. She tries to read some of the text and as she does so, a portal opens, bright light and wind burst forth and The Host screams like a banshee.
ACT III
As before, the portal brings a demon with it. The green demon and Angel quickly fight, but The Host recognizes him as his cousin, "Landok is that you?" and it stops the rumble. He is Landokmar of the Deathwok Clan and he reveals the Host's name, Krevlornswath, also of the Deathwok Clan but the Host prefers Lorne. Landok thought his cousin's sudden disappearance was because he threw himself into the Sacrificial Canyons of Trelinsk. Somehow family honor is involved, but Lorne decided on a one-way portal to L.A. Landok offers to help with the tracking of the Drokken because it will be difficult killing it since throwmite, a poison only available in his world, is non-existent on earth. Landok has the ability to read the waves of hostility left behind by the Drokken. They depart to the portal at the Caritas as a reluctant Lorne follows.
In a bad part of town, Gunn parks his truck and with the help of George begins to unload the wood furniture into a large pile. Gunn is clearly angry at himself being with his crew when he was needed the most.
Landok has proven himself and he has tracked the Drokken from the karaoke bar to the dark street where the Drokken has already fed. Landok channels his mind to read the aura of the creature. Unlike his cuz, Lorne uses his powers to reveal people their destinies, a shameful act in his family and one of many traditions that Lorne refused to follow causing him to become the black sheep of the family. Wes is worried because Gunn isn't answering his pages. Cordy reminds him what happened the last time Wes tried to rescue Gunn. She thumbs through the book revealing she feels there is something more. Landok has found the trail and reveals that the Drokken has taken food a.k.a. a person. The crew hurries on the trail of the Drokken.
They drive to a pallet recycling yard and before Wes can lay out his plan that includes a flare for distraction, the Landok jumps out of the car and follows the Drokken and the screaming woman. He fights him and the woman runs away, while the Drokken manages to bite Landok as Angel takes over the fighting. Lorne is worried because the venom of the Drokken is poisonous to his people and the antidote is only found in their homeland. The creature runs away after the woman. Angel and Wes split up, one to find the Drokken and the other the victim. Wes finds the victim first and the Drokken is on his heels. He attacks Wes, delivering a blow that knocks him down.
Act IV
Before the Drokken can deliver a second blow, Angel attacks with a sword. The Drokken seems to have the upper hand, but the vamp detective plunges the sword into the creature's neck, killing it. They return with a seriously injured Landok and Cordy reveals that to return to his dimension all he has to do is read from the book where a portal is known to exist. Wes isn't too sure, but Cordy insists that she just "knows." They follow their vision girl's advice and head to the Caritas.
While the crew is trying to save a life, Gunn is saying goodbye to one. The body is laid to rest a top the pile of wood and the bonfire is lit as Gunn's vamp fighting gang watch with sad eyes.
At the Caritas bar, the Landok is on stage with the book in hand. Lorne advises him to tell his mother that he sacrificed himself at the Sacrificial Canyons of Trelinsk to save the family honor. He begins to read from the book, "Klmprkthr pwlznth wrv . . . " and the portal opens in a bright light and sucks him back to his home world. The remaining three are relieved but then panic as they realize Cordy is missing!
Cordy finds herself in a forest and in the sky two suns shine brightly. She looks around realizing that she too was taken by the portal, "Oh, crap!" Our Dorothy is not in Kansas anymore.
