Episode 3, Season 3 Title: "That Old Gang of Mine"
Written by: Tim Minear Directed by: Fred Keller Original Air date: 7 October 2001
Teaser:
Intense eyes appear on screen, a close up shot of our vampire with a soul speaking "That night still haunts me. I'm ashamed of how I treated you. The way I used you--took what I needed and then I cast you aside. That was wrong of mevery wrong" The camera pulls out and we find that Angel confesses to none other than Merl? The gang is at Caritas trying to make reparations with Merl but he figures out that Angel is reading from note cards and takes it as an insult. Angel gives up and taunts Merls, but his attempt at smashing Angel with a beer bottle only results in a blue flash of light that shoves Merl away, preventing any harm and serves as a harsh reminder that the Caritas is a demon violence-free zone, which leaves Merl frustrated and ready to return home with a ride from Gunn.
Moments later, Gunn quickly drops off Merl at his place. He checks his mail, but finds he's not alone. He begs, "No, no, no!" as a streak of his green blood paints the wall.
ACT 1:
At Merl's place, Wes and Angel are already investigating the scene as Gunn walks in. He doesn't understand why Angel Investigations would be interested in the death of a demon. To which Wes reminds him that not everything is black or white. Things become tense as Angel calls Gunn out for being two hours late at answering his page, and Gunn leaves at Wes's request. Angel finds Merl's rolodex.
Gunn visits his old neighborhood and gets a punch and kick greeting when he steps into his old building. He meets Gio, a new addition from Miam to Gunn's old demon killing gang and admirer of Gunn's rep. Gio's also making use of one of Gunn's homemade crossbows. Rondell is the new leader and he greets Gunn warmly, it's apparent that Gunn hasn't stopped by in quiet a while. Gio hits a sore spot by mentioning Gunn's vampire boss, the very thing they live each day to kill. Rondell quickly sends Gio off, but Gio advises him to speak with Gunn in the bright sunshine, just in case.
At the Hyperion, Angel is worried about Fred because she hasn't given the world a chance, like going out into it and asks Cordy to talk to her. She hands him an "Enemies of Merl List" and finds himself at the top of the alphabetized list, which doesn't seem to fit too well with him, "Oh, yeah I went dark and I killed Merl." Well, peeps, did I mention he's wearing black leather pants? Cordy smiles and checks out his pants with an arched eyebrow. Wes decides to track down the names starting with "Z" and Angel joins him.
Across town, Gunn and Rondell are taking a walk in the neighborhood talking about the state of things. Our Angel crewmember doesn't like being called a traitor and he wants Rondell's opinion, but his old friend points out that Gunn hasn't been the same since Alonna. Gunn felt guilty over his inability to protect his sister and didn't feel he could protect his crew anymore, so he disappeared. But Rondell is glad his old friend is back and they renew their friendship.
At the Tall White Towers apartment building, Wes and Angel are going to visit Samuel Larch, a bookie that Merl owed a lot of money. Angel kicks open the door to find pieces of Samuel everywhere and his place a mess. To defeat whatever is causing this death and destruction, both admit that they will need Gunn on this mission.
Beneath the city of Angel, a large green creature is trudging along drinking a refreshing super size drink, just perfect for those long sewer walks. He hears a noise and innocently says, "Hello? Who's there please?" A rumble of feet and voices are heard as the harmless demon flees for his life but gets trapped. Gio raises his crossbow and another yells, "Smoke 'em Gio!" The arrow flies through the air.
Act II
Wes searches for evidence at Samuel's apartment; already he has collected evidence bags from the other crime scenes and picks up a piece of an arrow in this one. Gunn arrives and again questions the purpose of the mission, to which Wes reminds him that shades of gray do exist. There are six other victims and Angel comes with news of another victim. A non-violent Yarbnie demon was eviscerated in the sewers near Century City. Gunn spots the evidence bags on the nearby table, particularly the one with the piece of the steal arrow in it. He discreetly palms it and inserts it in his back pocket, excusing himself to "shake anything loose" on the street.
Gunn visits Rondell to show him the proof that a renegade killer, Gio, is operating in their midst but Rondell sets him straight, the entire crew was involved, and Gunn discovers that his old crew has changed its mission. Gunn asks, "Did it attack somebody?" Rondell notes that a demon was killed and such details don't really matter. Also, the crew has begun to use automatic weapons and they're getting ready for another attack. Gio has found a nest of some kind and Gunn's ex-crew takes off.
At headquarters, Wes's research hasn't turned up anything and he finds that an evidence bag is missing. Fred walks down to read a book in the courtyard and Angel quickly signals for Cordy to follow and talk to her. In the courtyard, Cordy explains that Fred must go. No, not 'leave', as a deflated Fred prepares to pack her few things, 'out into the world' and invites Fred to go out on the town with her. Cordy assures her that she'll be safe with her, in the bright, hot spotlight.
Across town, Gunn is in his truck, thinking on this new revelation. He takes a last glance at the arrow and turns over his truck.
Gunn arrives at the Hyperion to find only Angel, and asks about the progress on the case. Angel can only say that the purpose behind the killings is "To have fun." Gunn is looking for Wes and Angel sends him to the Caritas.
At Caritas, presenting the girl who lived in an alternate dimension for five years and lived to tell the tale is Fred! Her voice cracking as she sings a Patsy Cline classic, "Crazy" Wes gives Cordy the look, to which she quickly responds, "I swear to God, she picked the song herself!" Gunn arrives and quickly runs into to Lorne. Gunn is uneasy because he knows Lorne is reading him. As he reveals that Gunn has all the answers to Wes's questions. Suddenly, rapid gun fire breaks out as Gio's gang crash the karoake bar. Several demons are killed and Gio smiles, "Party!"
Act III
Gunfire and destruction continue at Caritas. Cordy and Wes quickly find protection behind an over turned table and Fred joins them with Wes's help. Because of the Sanctorium spell, demons cannot fight back but humans can attack. Gio calls out Gunn, who's hiding behind the bar along with Lorne. Rondell is clearly dissapointed that his long time friend has been hanging with demons as Gunn protects Lorne to Rondell's dismay. Wes realizes that Gunn knew who was responsible for the killings and Gunn quickly apologizes for not speaking up sooner, because he was trying to deal with it. Gunn gives Cordy his keys so that Cordy and Fred can get out safely. But Gio only lets Cordy leave if she'll bring back Angel.
At the Hyperion, Angel gives Cordy directions to the Transuding Furies, three sisters hired by Lorne to place a Sanctorium spell, a.k.a. no demon violence, at Caritas. Cordy must get them to lift the spell as a favor to Angel, whom they are familiar with so he can fight back. Cordy is worried that it won't work out in time, but Angel assures her it will. She is also worried for Fred, "I told her she was safe with me." Angel heads to Caritas.
Back at Caritas, Gio sings "Wind Beneath My Wings." Gunn knows his crew and reveals to Wes that he'll be the one they'll make kill Angel. Lorne offers an unsolicited reading to Gio, which upsets him - seems he's caused trouble before! A demon tries to escape but is held back near the entrance door. This distraction gives Gunn an opportunity to wrestle a firearm from Gio's hands. Gunn tries to turn the tide but it doesn't work. Gio recalls Alonna's death in the worst way possible, which results in Gunn's shooting of the demon that tried to escape. Angel arrives in time to witness Gunn's anger, "Nice shot. Am I next?"
Act IV:
Rondell takes out a stake and hands it to Gunn so that he can prove that this "thing" is no friend of his. Angel isn't afraid and turns vamp face to make it easier for Gunn.
At the plush apartment of the Transuding Furies, Cordy requests the spell to be lifted for Angel but they refuse because a contract that has been paid for cannot be so easily voided. Cordy eventually discovers that the sisters, all floaty and dreamy, know Angel quite intimately.
At Caritas, the hostage situation becomes tenser. Gunn drops the stake, refusing to kill Angel. Not because Angel is his friend, he will never be. But Angle knows the mission and that's what he fights for. Gio raises the stakes and gives the hostages a choice to leave by killing Angel. Fred stands up and takes the crossbow from Rondell. She changes her mind only the way Fred can and points it at Gio's throat instead. He shoves her away, but the sisters come through for Angel and the spell is broken in a flash of light and Angel quickly fights. In the melee, Gio gets his head eaten by one of the demons turned giant insect-like creature, then Rondell kills it with his Uzi.
Moments later outside Caritas, Wes helps Fred into a taxi. He warns Gunn that if he ever withholds information or places anyone of their team in danger again he'll be fired. Gunn gets the message and Wes joins Fred in the taxi. Gunn tries to explain what he said inside Caritas to Angel, proving that he can trust him because he had the chance to kill the vamp and didn't. Angel makes him see it differently; "You'll prove I can trust you when the day comes that you have to kill me, and you do." Angel walks into the dark night, leaving Gunn alone with those words to contemplate.
