Episode 4, Season 3 Title: "Carpe Noctem"
Written by: Scott Murphy Directed by: James A. Contner Original Air date: 15 October 2001
Teaser:
At Hyperion Hotel all things are quiet as the gang hangs out. Gun is playing a handheld game, Wes is translating and Cordy is perusing a fashion magazine. Fred breaks the silence by startling Cordy. Angel, excited over a Charlton Heston double feature playing at the Nuart movie theatre, comes downstairs. He tries to engage the others to come since its a two for one, but Fred is the only taker and is only too happily to accept. Angel offers her his arm, and she can only smile dreamily.
Across town at the Elandria hotel, a young physically buff man is having the time of his life with two beautiful women in his bed. He takes a moment for a martini to give his female exhausted companions a break. He checks out his pecs in the mirror, Its good to be young, and swallows the drink. Suddenly, he seems to be in pain and then speaks in Latin, "Alii Permutat Anima Kimota. A bright fire comes out from his mouth and eyes. The physical body is empty and his skin collapses on the floor. The women scream in horror.
ACT 1:
After their pseudo date, Fred is elated and can do nothing but talk, talk, talk about Angel to a very bemused Wes. She obviously saw it as a date and is in the throes of puppy love.
In the lobby, Cordy recognizes the problem immediately and asks Angel to speak to Fred and explain things about their date. Cordy points out that Fred has fallen hard for him and urges him to talk to her and he reluctantly agrees. She walks him into the office and he changes the subject to a headline in the newspaper. He points it out to Wes and our resident research expert has already been cutting out clippings of the amazingly similar deaths of young men in fancy hotels with the identical modus operandi. The latest victim was a 26 year-old, Woodrow 'Woody' Raglan found in a 2-bedroom suite at the Elondria Hotel. Angel finds his way out of the Fred talk and proclaims it a case to be investigated, much to Cordys dismay.
At Wolfram & Hart, Gavin catches Lilah at her office door. He offers a new perspective on Angel because he questions whether theres any physical proof of Angels existence, i.e. social security number and tax payer identification number. He gets the better of Lilah and she gets curious and asks her secretary to find Carter Williams, a forger.
At the Hyperion, the crew has a good start on the case and they find that all of the victims were part of the same health club. Cordy and Angel leave to investigate the gym, while Gunn will question the staff of the hotels where the victims were found. Wes will visit the coroner. Fred stays behind.
At the gym, Cordy quickly starts to interview the hunks and Angel obtains access to the gym members files. He finds that all of the victims took the same evening Pilates class. He heads to check it out and notices that someone is spying in on the class from across the street. He gets curious and heads to the Monserrat Retirement Home located directly across the street from the gym but not before checking in on Cordy.
At the retirement home, Angel knocks on door 316. A very old man with glasses greets him. Angel questions him about his hobby that includes binoculars and about the victims showing him newspaper clippings. A Nothian Herb jar catches the eye of Angel, and he spots extreme sports magazines on the floor. Marcus recites the Algurian body-switching spell, "Alli permutat anima kimota" and a blue light passes between them. The bodies now switched, and Marcus in Angels body, head butts Angel in Marcuss body. He gets knocked out and falls on a sofa chair. Marcus walks out enjoying his new young body. Cordy picks him up outside and Marcus just goes with the flow.
Act II
Cordy and Marcus return to the Hyperion Hotel and he begins to piece together the life he has just begun to live. Cordy reminds him that he must talk with Fred, One, youre not like other men. Two, theres no room in the workplace for romance. Marcus of course, has no idea what she is talking about, and concludes from Cordys words that the body he snatched belonged to someone who preferred men. She leaves for the night.
At the Monserrat Retirement home, our aged Angel wakes up and puts on his glasses to discover a wrinkled face is staring back at him in the mirror. He heads downstairs to use the phone, but his body is slow and he walks precariously. He calls the office, only to find Marcus, enjoying his newfound young body, answers the phone before he completes his message. Ryan the attendee nurse catches Angel with phone in hand and warns him, helping him back to bed.
The next day, Cordy walks into the office to find Marcus asleep on Wess desk that is littered with files. She clues him on his room available upstairs and reminds him to talk to Fred. At that moment, Wes walks in bearing a tea kettle in hand and Cordy leaves. Angel tries to give Wes the talk, mistaking him for Fred and suggests, None of that funny stuff! When Cordy yells, Wesley foods here! Our body snatcher Marcus realizes his mistake and is relieved.
In the lobby, Gunn delivers the food and Marcus gives him a tip and grabs a breakfast burrito munching into it with a strange earthly earnest. Gunn brings in news on the case and a copy of the phone bills, which have several calls to the First Class Escorts service. Wes and Gunn banter over who will interview the escorts, but Cordy wins out, while Wes and Gunn head off to the coroner. Marcus stays behind.
At the retirement home, a friend of Marcuss hands Angel his granddaughter to hold. Angel is anxious at handling the baby, but also because he was scooping out the exit, which is guarded by a security guard.
Alone in Wesleys office, Marcus uses the time to shred all of the research and evidence the crew has compiled on the case as he sips on a martini. Fred walks in and he immediately hits on her and feeds her an olive. He asks her out and she goes upstairs to change so that they can do the town. While Fred is upstairs with starry eyes, Lilah arrives with papers in hand that will counteract all of Gavins actions against Angel. Its apparent our lady lawyer doesnt want to be one upped by the competition. Marcus hands her a drink and she takes it with a wary eye on him.
At the retirement home, Angel manages to sneak downstairs and pulls a fire alarm. The guard leaves his post and just as Angel sees the way clear to the world, Marcuss frail body decides to have a heart attack.
Back at the Hyperion and several drinks later, Marcus making full use of Angels handsome face, gives Lilah a come hither look, Dont tell me you never thought about it. It works, and the frustrated bitter lawyer needs no other incentive and she kisses him, taking him on the desk. Fred, dressed in a killer red dress, walks in to catch them in the heat of the moment and runs out. Marcus follows the instincts of the vampire body, turns vamp face and takes a bite out of Lilahs neck.
Act III
Marcus is enjoying a drink on Lilah, and she shoves him away with some force and takes out her cross. She leaves and Marcus touches his faces, feeling the ridges and goes to a mirror only find that he has no reflection.
At the retirement home, Angel is hooked up to some machines and he discovers from Ryan that Marcus is on his fourth heart attack.
Cordy returns to the office from interviewing the escorts and finds Fred in the elevator crying her heart out. She recalls what she saw and Cordy asks, What woman?
In a night club, Marcus is getting into the groove of the music and atmosphere and quickly locks gazes with a beautiful woman across the room with a male companion of her own. He leaves, and Marcus uses this opportunity to charm her and they step outside. They kiss passionately and Marcus feeds on her, but is interrupted by the womans boyfriend and his buddies. Marcus fights them, pleasantly surprised at his super human strength and quickly disposes of them. He also realizes what he has to do to keep this body that will keep young and strong forever.
At the Hyperion, Cordy has alerted the rest of the crew. Wes stares at his desk, On my desk? The thought is not a pleasant one for anyone in the room. They realized that their Angel is not their Angel. Perhaps hes Angel, but if so, then why would he need to read up on vampires as evidenced by the books opened to those specific passages. Gunn suggests some sort of infection, and Cordy recalls that he went to Montesserat Retirement Center. They quickly head out.
At the retirement home, Angel is trying to sneak out again. He finds that Marcus has arrived at the center. He turns to smile at Angel in his aged body, Hi, Dad!
Act IV:
Angel knows why Marcus is there and he quickly attempts to run, but Marcus quickly follows and uses his newfound sense of smell to find him but Angel has the element of surprise as he clobbers him with a broom. But his victory is short lived and Marcus quickly overtakes Angel in his frail body. Close behind, the gang crashes in and save Angel. They attack Marcus and Cordy knocks him out with a stun gun. Wes questions Angel about an urn and he is right. They return to Marcuss room and do the Algerian body-switching spell: "Alli permutat anima kimota!" The conjuring stone is destroyed to Marcuss dismay, stopping his days of body snatching.
At the Hyperion, Fred is in the courtyard enjoying the moonlight as she reads. Angel tentatively walks in to finally have that talk with her, but Fred informs him that Cordy beat him to it because hed probably screw it up. Theyre interrupted by Cordy who has astonishing news, Angel, Willows on the phone. Shes alive! Buffys alive!! Angels heart leaps and so does he as he hurries inside. Buffy lives.
