Episode 5, Season 3 Title: "Billy "
Written by: Jeffrey Bell & Tim Minear Directed by: David Grossman Original Air date: 29 October 2001
Teaser:
Angel and Cordy are close, very close . . . because they are training with swords and Angel is taking her through the motions in a makeshift training room at the Hyperion Hotel. Cordy has perfected staving and now wants to learn to fight. Angel gets the point and introduces her to a few moves. He wants to repeat, but Cordy is graceful and learns quickly, three years on the Varsity Cheerleading squad had it's advantages as Angel quickly finds himself with a sword to his throat and manages to say, "Go Team!"
At Wolfram and Hart, Lilah is quickly heading for her office as she finds Gavin is inside with Billy whos been missing for a few days and finally showed up. His uncle, Congressman Nathan Blim picks him and is grateful. Afterwards, Lilah demands that Gavin leave, but he turns violent. He throws her against a glass display case and begins to choke her. Outside, Billy has an evil smile on his face as he walks through the hallway.
At Wesley's apartment, Gunn and Angel are playing video games while Fred watches. Aside, Wes and Cordy are chatting, which reveals that it was Wes's idea for a quiet dinner for two that turned to five at his place. Cordy knows that he likes Fred but Wes highlights the negatives of an office romance. Cordy has a vision of a man who hacks his wife to pieces in a convenience store but the vision is a week old. Cordy wonders why the PTB would show a vision so late.
The next day, Wesley plops the police case file on the counter at the Hyperion. The file includes photos and video captures of the crime scene. One photo shows Billy Blim in the convenience store a few moments before the incident. Everyone recognizes him but Cordy who doesn't understand.
Moments later, inside the main office with Angel, Cordy knows the story and she feels guilty because she caused the death of the woman. Angel takes responsibility but it does not help Cordy much. Angel decides to visit the one person who truly is responsible.
Angel kicks open Lilah's apartment door. She's pouring herself a drink in the shadows of her darkened living room. She rises into the light and Angel is stunned. Lilah's face is bruised and battered beyond anything you could possibly imagine. She warns Angel not to go after Billy because he comes from a rich and power family. She also informs him that Billy did not touch her. Angel is determined to find Billy.
Angel isn't the listening type and he heads to the home of the Congressman. Wesley and Gunn wait outside the gate while Angel jumps over it easily. He breaks through a window with a chair and walks inside while Billy calmly watches. Billy is definitely some sort of demon. He admits to not laying a single hand on anyone, but admits only to liking to watch. Angel is about to get down and dirty but the LA police show up and arrest Billy. He called in a tip on a location of a body. Before he gets handcuffed, Billy touches the male police officer as he's arrested and taken away.
On the way to the precinct, Billy watches from the backseat with an evil smile as the male police officer beats his female partner.
Act II
Wesley gets a call from his contact at the coronoer's office about the body Billy sent that tip on. He surmises that Billy wanted to get out of his Uncle's golden cage and the cops provided that escape. If escaping from Hell was easy, what's a simple man-made jail with the help from his lawyer? Angel is about to head out but is stopped by Fred who was listening to the police scanner. She informs the crew that the unit taking Billy had an accident on the way to the precinct.
Moments later, Wesley, Angel and Gunn are at the scene. Apparently, the accident happened when the female cop was attacked and she had to shoot her partner. She is in the hospital and Angel asks Gunn to check it out. Angel finds a trail of blood, which he follows and Wes takes a sample of a bloody handprint to analyze and figure out what kind of demon Billy.
At the Hyperion, Cordy gets a few weapons together and tells Fred she's going on a "normal everyday errand." Fred is nervous and knows Cordy is going on anything but a normal errand.
Wesley arrives seconds later excited with his bit of evidence. He quickly takes out his microscope and Fred hands him the slides for drawing a sample. Wes smiles appreciatively.
Cordy visits Lilah to get the 411 on Billy's location and on him. Cordy relates to Lilah's helplessness and she points out "No woman strong enough to wear the mantle of vicious pregnant dog should ever put up with it." Lilah seems to get Cordy's point and she concedes. Lilah reveals that Billy makes men get in touch with their primordial misogyny but some men have different reactions. Angel might have a delayed response.
Across town, Angel runs into a scene of a taxi driver who beat up his female passenger. Angel manhandles one of the co-workers of the taxi driver about the location of the last drop off.
In an exclusive part of town, Billy shows up at his cousin's party. Dylan seems tense and wants his unusual cousin to leave.
At the Hyperion, Wesley is looking at the blood through the microscope. Fred takes a look and Wes gets close. Billy's power comes from his blood, meaning it can be transferred through his saliva, touch, or sweat. Wes asks about Cordy and Fred is uneasy and lies to him, admitting that Cordy went to run an errand. Wes's voice turns cold, "Lie to me again and we have got a problem."
Act III
At the Hyperion, Fred leaves to locate Cordelia but Wesley orders her to sit. Fred apologizes but Wes turns the table and slaps her. She runs but he slams her against the stairs, and goes for the axe in the weapons cabinet as Fred flees.
Angel shows up at Dylan's apartment and finds himself easily welcomed. Dylan explains the rules the family has for Billy, Don't touch him. Don't leave him alone with your girlfriend or pets. Yikes! Billy came for money and reveals that he headed for Santa Monica because the family has a plane there. Dylan was forewarned by a cute brunette that "a melodramatic guy named Angel was going to show up." Angel realizes that Cordy is after Billy.
Wesley is searching the Hyperion for Fred with ax in hand, all the while he is talking. He finds a locked door and crashed through it. Fred is hiding beneath a bed in one of the abandoned rooms of the hotel. Wes breaks a ladder that sends a bag of nails over the floor. He finds her and slams her against the wall and kisses her. She has three nails in her hand and uses them to scratch his face. She escapes his grasp and flees again.
At a private airport in Santa Monica, Cordy walks up to Billy and explains that she is the one that was tortured to get him freed from Hell. She stun-guns Billy where it really counts and takes out a crossbow. "I'm here to send you back."
At the Hyperion, Wes finds Fred and chases her but she falls. She runs into Gunn and together they try to escape Wes.
Billy has a very negative view of women and finds them the root of all-evil. She has the crossbow aimed at his throat but Angel arrives and stays the weapon. Cordy knows that Billy won't hurt her, but Angel wants to take care of this bad guy. Billy touches Angel's face. "No, I won't hurt her at all." A red glow appears on Angel's face.
Act IV:
Gunn and Fred are running through the hotel and find a room to hide in as they barricade the door. Fred tells him that Wesley got infected with Billy's blood, the same sample that Gunn picked up and looked at. Oops! This worries Fred and he tries to get out but Wes is hacking away at the door. Fred's foot goes through the floor and Gunn catches her before she falls through. Gunn begins to get testy with Fred but stops himself.
At the airport, Angel gets testy with Cordy. She refuses to leave and Billy is excited about watching. "You know what your problem is? Guys like him," and punches Billy. He has no power over Angel.
Gunn breaks a chair and gives Fred a piece of the leg to knock him out and she does. Wes continues to hack at the door.
Angel and Billy fight. Suddenly, shots are fired and Billy goes down. To Cordy and Angel's surprise, they turn to see Lilah slowly lower her gun and walk away without a word.
Wesley finally breaks into the room. Fred pulls a cord that drives a fire extinguisher through the air and knocks Wes out onto the weakening spot and he falls through the floor.
The next day at the Hyperion, Cordy and Angel continue their training. Angel reveals that Billy could not affect him because he has no hate or anger left. Besides, for Angelus killing was about the pleasure and the pain. Cordy finds this strangely comforting.
Across town, Wesley is sitting in his silent kitchen. Fred knocks and he opens the door but she stays at the threshold. Fred touches the nail marks on his face concerned. She wants him to return to work. Wes offers a truly heartfelt, "I'm so sorry." Fred knows that he was not himself and everyone took a few days off. But, Wesley can't get over the fact that he tried to kill her. Fred offers, "You're a good man." Wes will return and Fred is happy. She leaves and Wes closes the door after her in tears. Fred pauses, hearing sobbing on the other side of the door and quickly walks away.
