Episode 7, Season 3 Title: "Offspring"
Written by: David Greenwalt Directed by: Turi Meyer Original Air date: 6 November 2001
Teaser:
1771. Rome. An 18th century Angelus is running through the sewers beneath Rome, running from monks that are hunting him. He's not successful and falls through a tunnel and into the hands of the ex-communicated Monsignor and his followers. Holtz appears, still searching for revenge for the death of his family at Darla and Angelus's hand. Angelus is tortured for several days until Darla saves him but she decides not to kill their tenacious vampire hunter because she considers him part of their family. They escape in a wagon covered in old blankets.
Present-day LA. In the middle of the night, a public transportation bus stops at Darla's command. She steps down with difficulty and the bus driver immediately calls for help on his radio. Behind her, Darla leaves several dead passengers slouched in their seats and survivors cowering in the back of the bus.
ACT 1:
In the makeshift basement training room Cordy is decorating with plastic flowers to lighten up the place since real flowers in the dark and dank of Angels world would be of the droopy and dying kind. Shes eager to begin another practice session of kicking and punching but Cordy gets a bit too into it and hits Angel's nose hard but he fakes that he's okay. She realizes that he's off because of the recent Prophecy problems. While they are practicing, Wes and Gunn are out stealing a piece of the Nyazian scroll, but Angel is more concerned for his nose.
Wes and Gunn are looking through the window of an Estate with a beautiful collection of art and priceless items. Wes tries to break in using his complicated techie toys but Gunn walks through the open back door. They step inside to find a darkened room with very unique items of the magical kind. They are looking for the Nyazian scroll. They find the vault, but are surprised by the gun-toting owner. Gunn breaks a precious and rare Cyopian conjuring spheres and threatens to break a few more. The owner gives in and lets them take the piece of his scroll.
Fred pitter patters downstairs and watches Angel and Cordy working on some fighting pointers. Cordy's muscles have had enough and she goes upstairs leaving Angel with Fred. Our resident physicist admires the two heroes and their attraction, to which Angel scoffs denial. Wes comes in and asks for Fred's mathematical help on the scrolls, saving Angel from further discomfort.
Later, Wes and Fred are head deep in the scroll translation, specifically the calendar dates predicting the end of the world. Gunn is curious about the prophecy and Wes explains that the prophecy predicts the arrival of a Tro-clon; a being that comes to bring the ruination of mankind. Cordy recalls Wes's previous mistake on the Shanshu Prophecy, while Angel listens from the other side of the wall to their conversation. Fred's preliminary calculations show that the "bad thing" should already be in LA, but she runs the numbers again. Angel gets that attraction thing straightened out with Cordy, relieved that she only thinks of him as a great friend. Then, Darla with protruding belly in tow surprises them all as she crosses the threshold of the Hyperion Hotel.
Act II
At the Hyperion, Darla makes her entrance and everyone finds out Angel's big secret. Cordy feels betrayed because he lied to her about sleeping with Darla and Wes knows that vamps can't have children. Darla punches Angel and Cordy comes to her aid. Angel is in denial. Darla has been to every Shaman but not a single one could give her any answers. She asks for their help in finding what's happening to her. The crew is upset with Angel's irresponsible actions, but Wes knows the fastest way to get some answers.
At Caritas, Lorne is supervising the reconstruction of his bar with the three magical sisters named the Transuding Furies, re-conjuring their sanctuary spell to cover humans as well as demons. He's hopeful about the bar's re-opening. The entire crew enters and Lorne is stunned by Darla's condition and she quickly grabs him by his lapels and sings "Oh Danny Boy." He concludes it could be anything even that evil thing predicted in the Nyazian scrolls. Darla is in pain and she's taken to Lorne's bedroom to be more comfortable. Cordy stays by her side.
At the bar, the crew is trying to figure out the prophecy but all looks grim. Fred jumps up and gives them a pep talk on whopping evil. This revives the gang's spirits and they will look at the info again, not giving up. Lorne advises Angel not to get in Cordy's way.
Inside the bedroom, Cordy recalls her supernatural pregnancy, especially the ravenous hunger part and realizes a tad too late she could be in danger. She tries to leave, but Darla turns vamp face. She's feeding on a daily basis but can't seem to get her fill. Understandable, since she's drinking for two now. Cordy punches her and pulls out a cross, but Darla is too strong and she stifles Cordy's scream with her free hand as she bites her neck.
Act III
As Darla takes a bite, Cordy sees a vision. Before Darla can attack again Angel pulls her off and carries Cordy out. Darla has already taken off. Angel's first priority is Cordy and he discovers that Darla is particularly strong because she fought her way through all the men in the bar on her way out.
Cordy is taken to Angel's bedroom at the Hyperion. She is patched up and her medication is taking effect as Gunn stands guard. Angel assures her that Darla will never harm her again and she tells him about the vision she had. Darla is very hungry and she's headed to an arcade for kids.
Moments later, Angel is gathering his weapons as Wes tries to change his mind about finding Darla on his own. As usual, it doesn't work and he leaves on her trail.
Darla is at an arcade for kids. A little boy is lost and Darla helps him out. A mom admires her for having a second child with one already ion tow and Darla offers with a smile, "I love children. I could just eat 'em up." She walks off with the little boy.
Act IV:
A nightmare of the vision wakes Cordy from her sleep. She explains the vision to the crew in the main office and tries to put together the prophecy, while Wes re-visits the scrolls. Fred calls Angel's cell phone and then beeper but it's found in his extra jacket in the office. The vision is trying to tell them why Darla is craving younger victims.
At the arcade, Darla turns vamp face and is about to bite the little boy when Angel attacks with a stake. They begin to fight and everyone flees in terror. Darla is unusually strong. She hates him for what he did, and he begins to choke her, but vamps don't breathe. He raises a stake and she begs him to do it. He steps back and realizes that the child she carries has a heartbeat and thus a soul, which explains why she is craving purer blood. He tries to calm Darla as he holds her in his arms.
Later, Darla is in one of the bedrooms of the Hyperion and once again Gunn is popular as guard. Angel goes downstairs and warns Cordy and Fred not to go near Darla, regardless of anything. They deal with the reality that the child has a soul but Wes points out that even with a soul she could give birth to what is prophesized. Angel accepts his child. Fred has an "oh, oh" and she rises from her computer screen to announce, "I believe that whatever this thing is, it's arriving right about ..Three, two, now."
Beneath the LA streets, in an underground temple, tall torches illuminate a stone sculpture. A demon speaks to the sculpture and throws powder from a small bag upon it, "Arise as was promised and foretold! Arise!" He lights a cig and waits. The ground trembles and the eyes of the sculpture come to life and then the stone breaks apart revealing a human. The demon greets the man, "Welcome to the 21st century, Angelus is here." The man rises, and it's the familiar face of Holtz, revenge is still burning in his being, "Just tell me where he is." Angel and Darla have an old surprise
