Episode 8, Season 3 Title: "Quickening"
Written by: Jeffrey Bell Directed by: Skip Schoolnik Original Air date: 12 November 2001
Teaser:
1764. York, England. Holtz is riding on a horse in the middle of the night to meet some men that have found Angelus and Darla.
Meanwhile, Darla and Angelus knock on the home of Holtz. His young daughter answers the door and they convince her to invite them in and Angelus locks the door behind them.
Holtz meets up with his men in front of a cabin. He enters with a torch in one hand and a stake in the other. He searches in vain, only to find a note tacked to a basement door, How do you hope to save others when you cannot save your own? He realizes only too late exactly where his two nemeses are.
Darla and Angelus give Holtz their message in the form of feeding on his young daughter and wife. The pair discovers a crying baby and Angelus asks, Do you want to do it or should I? Referring to who will send the child to his mother.
Holtz quickly rides to his home to find his family dead and Angelus and Darla gone.
Modern LA. Angel enters Darlas room, where she is sleeping and lays his hand on her belly. She awakes, Are you going to do it or am I? Referring to Angels would be evil child.
ACT 1:
In a temple underneath LA, Holtz sits and watches several televisions catching up on history. The demon that brought back Holtz gives him the lowdown on the modern world and explains that the fates of Angel and Darla are intertwined with his.
At the Hyperion, Angel and Darla talk about the night they copulatedthe night of his fabled epiphany but the crew interrupts and Wesley informs them of a breakthrough with the translation of the Nyazian scrolls, revealing that the Tro-clon isnt a person or persons but a confluence of events. It doesnt necessarily mean the child is still not evil. Darla reveals that it is being protected and Angel asks his crew to protect it as well until they find out whats really going on. Cordy agrees after she punches Darla, a little payback from feeding on her. Darla falls in pain, but from contractions.
At Wolfram & Hart, Lilah signs a document with blood, and Cyril, the mailroom boy, comes by to pick it up. He also brings to her attention a video taken of Lilah and Angel going at it on his desk in Carpe Nocturn. She immediately goes on the defense and threatens Cyril with death and torture unless he tells her who sent the videoGavin Park. Turns out that Gavins exterminators planted bugs instead of killing them.
In a dark, small room of W&H, Gavin is overlooking his assistant transcribing what the espionage equipment has recorded of the activity at the Hyperion as Lilah drops in and points out he needs help, money and staff. She looks over last weeks transcript and wants to know who the unidentified pregnant female is. They dont know because they lost the audio for a while but the assistant shows her the tape and Lilah recognizes Darla. She dials her cell and talks to Linwood, their supervisor but luckily not one of the Senior Partners.
In Angels bedroom, Darla continues to have contractions and she comes to the reality that she in labor. The crew talks in the living area for options and decide they need to borrow some equipment from a hospital.
At W&H, Linwood, a white-haired man, walks with Lilah and Gavin demanding to know how Darlas pregnancy could be overlooked. Lilah reassures Linwood the psychics employed by the law firm are in the conference room ready to answer to them. Cyril eavesdrops from an open door and with his cell phone leaves a voice message to Master Tarfall, the Underlord of Pain, Master what you have seen has come to pass. We must tell the others.
Act II
York, England. 1773. Holtz sits alone in his empty home, drinking by the fire, his thoughts on his late beloved family. Behind him, Sahjhan materializes out of the shadows. Sahjhan tells Holtz hell help him kill Angelus and Darla by taking him to the future or he can stay and die a bitter old man. In exchange for taking Holtz to the 21st century, Sahjhan demands that Holtz show the vampires no mercy when the time comes.
At a teaching hospital, Angel wheels Darla into a room with the needed equipment. The contractions have stopped and Wes deduces that she was in false labor. Shes not happy with the news as Gunn and Fred bring in an ultrasound machine.
Holtz is in his lair, and frustrated over Sahjhans late arrival but the demon explains there are greater things at work more powerful than them. Sahjhans visage becomes human, his street face and the two leave his dwelling in search of men for their cause.
W&Hs conference room is filled with psychics and other mystics as Linwood demands of one psychic why this event was not foreseen and the firm forewarned. Lilah informs Linwood that theres no answer to Darlas pregnancy and the Nyazian scroll that explains more is missing. Linwood is going to blame Lilah because Darla was resurrected on her watch. Gavin is smug with the turn of events, but Lilahs not giving up yet and she makes a call on her cell phone to a trained human swordsman to find and retrieve the baby.
At the hospital, Wesley uses the ultrasound equipment to identify the thing inside Darla, which turns out to the surprise of everyone: a human boy. Angel smiles with the realization that fatherhood is right around the corner, Im gonna have a son. They are oblivious to the twenty or so vampires that surround them until its too late. They brace for an attack but the cult of vampires bow before the image on the ultrasound and their leader speaks, Behold the miracle child!
Act III
Holtz and Sahjhan are walking the streets of LA and enter a building where some men will help them battle Angel. Grapplar demons are training and Holtz isnt comfortable with the thought of turning to those he hunts for help in the muscle-department and asks Any other surprises?
At the hospital, the vampire leader proclaims that they worship Ul-Thar, as Lilahs swordsman jumps through a window. The vamps quickly dispense with him and reveal that they want to kill only the humans and feed the mother to Darlas delight.
At Wolfram & Hart, Gavin goes over a blueprint of the Hyperion with a team of commandos who plan on raiding it. Dr. Fetvanovich, a specialist in paranormal obstetrics from the W&H satellite office in the Balkans, is introduced to all present and is going with the commandos, planning to dissect both Darla and the baby. The firm will record everything.
Back at the hospital, Angel and Gunn hold off the vamps and kill several of them, while the rest take Darla to the car. Fred pulls a knife on Darla to aid in their escape, whispering to her that the vampires don't know it can't hurt the baby. Darla assures her that 'now they do', thanks to their supernatural hearing!
At the Hyperion, the special ops men enter to find the hotel empty. Dr. Fetvanovich orders them to set up in the lobby and asks that a small animal cage for the baby be placed next to the mothers.
Act IV:
The crew, in Angels car, hit the road. Darlas acting weird and Angel knows she is reacting to seeing her child on the monitor. They know they have to leave town, but Wesley points out that they need the scrolls and heads to the Hyperion.
The special ops team is inside the Hyperion waiting for the crew to show up but instead they get Holtz. Dr. Fetvanovich is setting out his tools when Holtz barges in and demands, Wheres Angelus?
Meanwhile, Gavin, Linwood and Lilah look on via the surveillance cameras as Holtz enters, and Linwood orders the strange Dr. to be killed. Gavin feels secure in his team, but the screen has technical difficulties, leaving the attorneys in the dark. A long scream is heard and Linwood calls the men on the radio, Anybody there? Over?
Angel stops the car a few blocks from the Hyperion and goes on foot to retrieve the scrolls, ordering the crew to leave if hes not back in five minutes.
Once he arrives, he finds a trail of death and destruction of bodies, including the doctors who had chicken feet. Angel is frozen dead in his tracks when he hears a familiar voice declare, Angelus, Ive been looking for you.
Back in the alley, the crew has already waited more than five minutes and Cordy starts the car. Darla yells out a scream and Gunn takes out a blanket from the trunk to help Darla in any way they can for what promises to be a difficult delivery. Fred wonders, Whats keeping Angel? Indeed what could be keeping Angel?
