Episode 12, Season 3 Title: "Provider"
Written by: Scott Murphy Directed by: Bill Norton Original Air date: 21 January 2002
Teaser:
In the office of the Hyperion, Angel counts change taken from the couch and saves it in a pink piggy bank, placing it in the safe; the Conner Fund has begun at a $1.83. While Fred works on the new Angel Investigations website, Cordy reminds Angel that they work for the Powers and while looking out for Conner does mean they have to make more money, they shouldn't neglect their mission. Fred announces the site is 'live' as Wesley and Gunn walk in after having distributed 6,000 flyers announcing AI as "paranormal specialists." The crew gathers around the computer to check out the site and wait for the phone to ring. Daddy tells Conner, "Don't you worry, this town's full of people who have problems." And, they wait for the phone to ring.
In the darkness of a rainy night, a helpless man running from a demon stumbles into some trashcans. He falls to the ground as his hand catches a wet flyer with the Angel Investigations logo.
And, still waiting . . .
The man runs to a phone booth and immediately dials the phone number, the demon close behind. The phone rings but it's Fabrizio's Pizza joint answering on the other end. The demon closes in and there's nothing anyone can do.
And, as they wait for that phone to ring, Fred peruses the flyer and wonders, "Is this the right phone number?"
Act I
Wesley walks into the Hyperion with the new flyers as Gunn checks out Fred tending to Conner in her arms. Wes admires the baby as well, but Gunn makes it clear he's admiring the babe and not the bab-y. Angel reminds Wes they can't afford to make any more mistakes that cost money. He asks Lorne to use his sources to find out what Holtz has been up to but it's evident Angel is juggling several priorities: making money, keeping tabs on Holtz and when Cordy clears her throat, he adds on, helping the helpless. Cordy notices the site has some hits and, Yes! the phones begin to ring.
In his underground lair, Holtz is reprimanding his young protg for disobeying orders-killing two vampires. Holtz is testing her to see if Justine has the commitment for the work that is to come. She seems in pain and we see her hand is tacked to the table with an ice pick. Holtz leaves and challenges her to remain in her place if she wants to be a part of what Holtz has planned.
A short while later, the Hyperion lobby is full of the helpless of L.A.; man and demon as Fred passes out a signup sheet -- there is already a line! Lorne informs Angel of a client who's willing to pay big bucks, but it's Wes that they're interested in and Angel is only too happy to comply. Cordy is nervous because it seems that her fears are coming true and she urges Angel to pick up the phone and talk to a potential client. Gunn is in the main office with another client whose dead ex-boyfriend, Brian, is stalking her. Lorne is translating for the Nhadrahs who are interested in Wesley's brain because they need someone to solve a puzzle that will be presented to their Prince as a gift. The Nhadrahs were led to Wesley because of his web articles on DNA Fusion Comparisons and Tri-ped Demon Populations. Fred takes notice of their decorated garments and physically points out a few mathematical similarities, which leaves Wes impressed. The Nhadrahs mistake Fred as Wes's girlfriend and they leave in a huff to consult with their Prince.
Angel arrives at the company of his client, Harlen Elster, who will pay $10,000 if he gets rid of a pesky vampire nest at 83rd and Vermont. The vampires get paid a protection fee and in exchange they do not eat the employees of the local businessmen. He writes a check for $5,000 up front, the rest after the job is done and Angel is off to earn his mullah. Seconds later, an older gentleman, the real Harlen Elster, walks through the door and demands, "What the hell are you doing in my office?" The real Harlen gets sucker punched by Angel's client.
Act II
In the lair, Justine's hand is still attached to the table and Holtz takes out the ice pick and commands her to search for people who fit her profile. Holtz wants people that are faithful to his mission and she punches him hard and walks out.
At the Hyperion, Angel drops by to show his check to the crew, but only Cordy and Fred are there because Wes and Gunn are working on the stalking case. Lorne stumbles in with a, "Buon Giorno", after visiting his Gar-wawk snitch and lets Angel know that Holtz poisoned his Graplar soldiers because he prefers to trust humans as his footmen while Lorne's contacts are on the streets looking for Holtz's location. The Nhadrahs return, but this time to get Fred to solve their puzzle at their barge docked in a marina. Angel agrees but Lorne must go with her as well to translate. They offer $50,000 smackers and Angel quickly takes their steel suitcase with a smile.
At their client's home, Wesley and Gunn are checking out Allie's place. She shows them a picture of Brian and Wes explains about the several possible types of demons that her dead ex-boyfriend may be. Suddenly, Brian's hand lashes out behind the door and Gunn helps Wes punch at its hold and quickly locks the door. Out of breath, Wes realizes, "Right then, Zombie it is!"
At the marina, Fred and Lorne, who's a bit nauseous, enter the Jules Verne meets Leona Helmsley decorated barge of the Nhardahs. They insist on taking Fred's picture and she quickly starts to work on the large crystal puzzle, while Lorne turns down their eyeball and insect Hors d'oeuvres.
Across town, Angel walks into their nest and quickly dusts one vamp as two more enter. Soon afterwards, Angel returns to his client's office to get the rest of his ten grand. But he finds out that the stranger before him is the real Harlen Elster sporting a black eye put there by Sam Ryan, the man who had impersonated him earlier. Harlen explains that Sam used to work for him but fired him after Sam lost his friend, Jack. He asked Harlan to pay to kill some vampires living in a building guarding their treasure. Angel tears the check in half, taking his losses, but did Harlen say, "treasure?"
Back at the barge, Fred begins to solve the puzzle and this makes the Nhardrah's very happy but unfortunately, Lorne is still feeling very nauseous and he steps away to look for a bathroom. He explores the barge and stumbles into a dark room where the Nhardrah's are tending to their Prince, whose debilitated head is quickly wasting away. One of the followers shows the Prince a picture of Fred's head on a laptop, and with the click of the button pastes it on a picture of the Prince, to which he nods in approval but before Lorne can warn Fred, he is knocked out. The Nhadrah's plan is to decapitate Fred this very night.
Act III
In the Hyperion lobby, Cordy is hopping up and down trying to show Conner her floating powers, but no go. Conner has a lot to look forward to with vision-getting Aunty Cordy and vampy daddy. This little baby is going to have an interesting life! What with dad fighting evil and all, even if it is for money.
Back at the vampire nest, Ryan walks inside and picks up a watch but Angel surprises him and takes it away. Ryan finally reveals that the watch belonged to his friend but Angel is no softy and demands the ten grand for the three vamps he dusted. Ryan gives him the news that there were seven vamps and they both become alert when they hear a noise echo through the room.
Meanwhile, Cordy is still chatting it up with Conner and flashes the bills in her hand just as she has a pain-free vision of Fred and the consequences of solving the puzzle and this quickly brings her to the serious trouble they are all in.
At the Nhadrahs' barge Fred is getting closer to solving the puzzle and her decapitation. Too engrossed in her work, she never noticed that Lorne never returned from this trip to barf land.
Still at Allie's home, Wes and Gunn have secured every possible entrance in the home with one exception-the skylight in the kitchen. A determined Zombie-Brian quickly crashes through and enters as he begs his ex-girlfriend to take him back. They knock him down and run into the bedroom.
At the Hyperion, Cordy tries to reach Wes and Gunn but to no avail. Angel is out of reach as well, still having failed to conquer his voicemail, and so it's up to her to save Fred.
Wes and Gunn barricade the bedroom door but Zombie-Brian continues his assault and only calms down when he finds out she's not dating the two men he suspected her of. She rejects him once again and punches him to prove her point as Zombie Brian retreats. Suddenly, everything is quiet and Wesley opens the door to find Zombie-Brian sitting down and pouting over his rejection. The Undead lover is still determined to keep the relationship going and we find out that Allie poisoned him in the first place because he was so "needy." Wes and Gunn are astonished when Zombie-boy and girl make-up with a hug and a kiss. Who knew love really had no boundaries? But it does cost money and Wes reminds their client, "Will this be cash or charge?"
Still at the nest, Ryan holds back the door while the vamps try to knock it down. Angel refuses to help and stands aside until he gets paid. After some begging, Angel agrees to barricade the door, but all the while Angel interrogates Ryan for his credit.
At the Nhadrah's abode, Fred has solved the puzzle and the clients are beside themselves with joy. They drag her to the backroom where she finds Lorne tied up on the floor and she is strapped to a chair with her neck held in place by a steel bar. A Nhadrah's about to cut off her head when Cordy enters with Conner and the briefcase on hand hoping to return the money in exchange for Fred. Unfortunately, Lorne jumps the gun and lets the Nhadrah's know they are in for some ass kick'in -- but Cordy's alone!
Act IV
Finally, Angel breaks a window to help Ryan escape but he refuses to leave. Frustrated, Angel takes out the vamps as he rants about his misfortune in quality of service rendered and not getting paid for it. Angel leaves as his cell phone voicemail rings. Behind him, Ryan compliments him for his charge-free service, "You're a real champion!"
Cordy is in a real jam and kicks one of the Nhadrah's in the you-know-where but they have steel plates to protect them and her foot is in pain. Wes and Gun enter just in time to save the day, they fight off the demons as Fred screams and the two admirers quickly move to keep her safe. They decapitate the Prince and knock the Nhadrah's sword away from Fred's pulsing neck. With their leader dead, this makes the demons even angrier and they rush the two heroes but Angel crashes through the skylight to assist in the whoopin' ass part of the night.
A while later, the floor is littered with bodies of the Nhadrah and the crew is once again safe. Angel checks on Conner while Gunn and Wesley help Fred out of the chair but before she can give a kiss to both of her champions, Lorne asks for help out of his bind. Angel realizes he got carried away about the whole money thing and apologizes to his crew, admitting that family and the mission are really the most important thing. He eyes the fifty grand on the floor and Cordy makes an excellent point, "They tried to cut Fred's head off-we earned every penny!" Cordy takes Conner while the rest scramble for the money and place it in their pockets.
After a day of fighting and helping the helpless, Angel and Cordy are lying down on his bed with Conner between them. Cordy feeds the baby his bottle while they all drift off to sleep and Cordy mumbles about using the fifty grand for paying bills, a college fund and a ski condo. They must have some in their lives, don't they?
