Episode 17, Season 3 Title: "Forgiving"
Written by: Jeffrey Bell Directed by: Turie Meyer Original Air date: 15 April 2002
Teaser:
Destruction. Angel's bedroom at the Hyperion is burned and charred from the accidental stove fire caused by the small earthquake. In the center of the chaos sits Conner's cradle, untouched by the fire and Angel in shock from the night's events stands in the center staring at the empty space inside the cradle.
At Wesley's apartment, Fred checks the messages on the answering machine while Gunn looks for clues, he knows Wes isn't coming back but Fred refuses to believe it. Nothing makes sense anymore for anyone, but Fred knows their dear friend kept detailed diaries and perhaps finding them could give them insight to his actions. They leave and she once again calls his cell phone as they drive away, but nearby Wesley's cell phone rings with him only a few feet away lying on the ground.
At Holtz's head quarters, still bruised and upset, Justine enters and proclaims that Holtz escaped and will not return but has charged them with the mission to kill Angelus.
Silence. Angel is still in his bedroom; his eyes haven't left his son's empty cradle.
Act I:
Fred and Gunn return to the Hyperion Hotel and refuse to believe what Lorne has told them about Wesley's betrayal - sneaking behind their backs to meet with Holtz and the baby's disappearance into another dimension. Gunn knows better and still defends Wes as Angel joins them determined to find those responsible and make them pay but he uncharacteristically desires to research the alternate world opened- Quor-toth and Sahjhan and orders Lorne to do some street research as the rest of them hit the books and the internet.
In the offices of Wolfram & Hart, Linwood is upset with the night's turn of events, especially the part of Connor not coming into the hands of the firm. Lilah assures him she had no choice, "Again, gun to my head." - the only winner that night was Holtz.
In the main office, the crew is heavy into research but getting nowhere fast because this was Wesley's forte. Gunn can't figure out Cordy's filing system and Fred's internet searches are coming up empty as she should cross-reference Sahjhan's name in Phisto's Dictionary of Demon and Dimensional Spirits but the book is in Ga-Shundi - a language she doesn't know but you-know-who does. A tired and haggard Angel refuses to call Cordy to return, but frustration gets the best of him and the old Angel kicks in and takes off to find the people that will give him answers - those responsible. This makes Fred and Gunn nervous and realize they must find Wes before Angel does.
In the park near Wesley's apartment complex, a homeless man stumbles upon a near-dead stranger lying on the ground. Instead of calling for help, the homeless man pilfers through Wesley's pockets and finds his wallet full of hundreds, which he pockets and proceeds to drag him behind some large bushes. Wesley reaches out with his hand but his voice is gone and once again is left alone.
Back at the Hyperion, Lorne returns from his legwork on the street, which results in bad news for Angel. The only way to access the Quor-toth dimension is by tearing through this reality - no hotspots or portals can get you there - and only the darkest of magicks can accomplish this. As Lorne explains their dire situation, Angel collects some supplies from the office, a pointy message holder, and a stapler remover. As he follows Angel upstairs, Lorne points out the obvious, "We just don't have the resources to conjure up that much dark power!" Angel has other plans in mind as he opens a door and we see Linwood tied to a chair, "Oh, I think we do."
Act II:
In the charred Hyperion bedroom, Linwood Murrow introduces himself to Lorne as Division President of Special Projects for W&H. Angel gathers his items on the table, apparently also useful for torture. Linwood quickly changes his mind from pressing charges to helping Angel who holds a cell-phone to Linwood's ear and instructions Lilah about his special client, "Give him anything he wants."
At Holt'z headquarters, Gunn and Fred visit Justine to find Wesley but she refuses to budge. Fred has a revelation about trash as she looks at the mess. The rest of Justine's gang attack and one is about to slit Gunn's throat but she stops him and orders Gunn and Fred out.
At Wolfram & Hart, Lilah is walking Angel to the 'White Room' which contains the answers he needs. Apparently the White Room is a very secret place and not necessarily a good place since the last person who went there is now in an asylum. They leave the elevator after Angel punches a secret button, and step into a bright white room with only a young girl sitting in the center. She reveals that demons like Sahjhan were once violent bringers of chaos and death, but were made immaterial and can only be captured with a special urn. In return for the ritual to make Sahjhan solid Angel the girl orders him kill Lilah and without a second thought he moves to snap her neck but the girl giggles and stops him - knowing that he is willing to do it - is enough for her. She gives him the spell.
Behind Wesley's apartment, Fred climbs into the trash dumpster with Gunn's help and finds his diaries, which they take to Wesley's apartment to read through them and find that Wesley had discovered the prophecy of 'The Father Will Kill The Son' and this sheds light on Wesley's actions. Fred is hopeful that with this info Angel will forgive him but Gunn isn't so sure it will be so easy.
Back at the Hyperion Lobby, Angel prepares for the ritual as Lorne tries to appeal to his reason but Angel is determined to solidify Sahjhan to find his son and make him pay the only way he knows how. Lilah assists by giving some of her human blood to finish the ritual but after the lights and sounds subside, the demon doesn't appear and Angel returns his attention to Linwood.
Across town, Sahjhan feels the effects of the ritual and unknown to him becomes solid until a truck hits him head on and then crashes into another car. Sahjhan flips over the truck, "Oh, this is more like it."
Act III:
At the Hyperion, Angel drags Linwood upstairs but lets him tumble down the stairs after Lilah's tech team contacts her to inform her there's been a bio-plasmic disturbance at Taber & National. Gunn and Fred run in and share their discovery of the prophecy with Angel, but he doesn't see its relevance since he would never hurt the people he cares about and leaves to find Sahjhan. Lorne reveals that their situation is bad.
Outside the hotel, Justine uses a crossbow to drive an arrow into Angel, but misses and her gang attacks, unsuccessfully. Angel continues on his way but Fred and Gunn step outside in time to see Justine take off in Wesley's vehicle.
At Taber & National, the driver, Al Stockley, sits in shock after the accident and explains to Angel that he hit a man but the man walked away - an impossibility. Stockley doesn't know where the man went but Angel assures him it wasn't his fault and checks the truck out and finds it stained with demon goop.
In the underground lair, Justine recalls her training moments with Holtz but Gunn and Fred interrupt and she reveals that Holtz betrayed her, using them all to get Angel's baby. Gunn and Fred demand to know Wesley's location and Justine confirms their belief that Wes is innocent but she also adds that she slit his throat - to which, Fred punches Justine with unusual force and Gunn steps in to demand his exact whereabouts. Behind them Sahjhan enters, "You call that a fight? Let me show you how we used to do it!"
Act IV:
In Sahjhan's lair, the air is tense and he swings into action by easily flinging Justine into a wall, enjoying his newfound solid state and is ready to beat up the rest when Angel enters. Angel changes things by demanding that Sahjhan take him to Quor-toth. Sahjhan reveals this is not possible because creating another tear in this reality would endanger the entire world, which means there is no way to get to Conner. But worst still is that we finally find out that Sahjhan, through his inter-dimensional traveling capabilities, changed the original prophecy that said "The one sired by the vampire with a soul shall grow to manhood and kill Sahjhan." Sahjhan planted the prophecy translated by Wesley. This is all too much for Angel and he responds the only way he can by vamping out and attacking Sahjhan. Both fight viciously but the ages old demon is more experienced and has the upper hand on Angel. Sahjhan also reveals that Conner had a bright future. Before Sahjhan can dust Angel with a piece of wood, Justine fetches a magical Urn and he is sucked into it. She finally reveals Wesley's location.
Later, Fred, Gunn, and Angel return once more to the park, but still find no trace of Wesley. Sunrise is coming and Angel leaves while the others continue their search.
At the Hyperion, Angel is reflecting on the events and realizes that Fred and Gunn tried to stop him from once again going too far. Lorne advises that they did the best with the information they had, including Wesley. Angel needs to start forgiving himself and then perhaps he can begin to forgive Wes. Lorne picks up the ringing phone and it's Fred with news that Wesley is at a hospital and asking for Angel.
At the hospital, Gunn and Fred meet Angel and let him know that Wesley is still in danger, he can't speak because his trachea was damaged and he lost a lot of blood. Angel visits Wesley, explains that he understands and assures him that he would never hurt his son, "This isn't Angelus talking, it's me - Angel. You know that, right?" Wesley affirms with a slow nod of his eyes and a second later, Angel suffocates a helpless Wesley with a pillow, cursing and screaming, "You're gonna die! You're gonna pay! You took my son!" Orderlies and Gunn drag Angel out of the room as Wesley struggles for breath. Angel's words echo through the hospital, "You're a dead man Pryce! Dead!" Forgiving will not be an easy thing for Angel.
