Episode 21, Season 3 Title: "Benediction"
Written & Directed by: Tim Minear Original Air date: 13 May 2002
Teaser:
In the Hyperion Lobby, Fred, Gunn, Cordelia, Lorne and Groosalugg are worried about the big possibility of another evil-ugly crossing over through the dimensional tear and are concerned for Angel's son especially if it's looking for Connor. An injured Angel stumbles inside and assures them Connor didn't cause his injuries and that the child they new as Connor has adopted a knew name, "Stephen." They tell Angel something else may have crossed through and may be looking for Connor, but Angel knows his son can take care of himself especially after surviving such a hell-dimension. Angel is also willing to wait for his son to return on his own.
Across town at a motel, Connor pays for a room for himself and his father with Tyke's cash.
Act I
Outside the French Cottage Motel, Connor finds snacks in a "big metal box" outside and returns to his father with an armful of food and a newspaper that enables Holtz to realize they have only been gone a few days. Connor doesn't like living in this dimension but Holtz assures him he had to come here because Connor wanted to see "him." We find that Holtz has told Connor the truth about his own past and parentage and how they came to be in Quor-toth. Holtz urges Connor to go to Angel to find out about his vampire father.
At the Hyperion Hotel, Fred is explaining to the crew about the Geiger counter with Cedrian Crystals that may enable to help them track anything that came out of the tear. Cordy asks Gunn about Angel and he directs her to Angels training room. Groo watches carefully his princess's concern.
Cordelia visits Angel in his training room, where our vamp with a soul is punching away and reveals the possibility of Connor not returning.
In the garden atrium outside, Groo is in a thoughtful mood about Angel's current inaction compared to his previous determination to have Connor back. Groo wonders if it is destiny, underlying perhaps his own relationship with Cordy. Lorne advises that sometimes things aren't meant to work out. Groo takes a walk and asks Lorne to let Cordy know where he went in case she asks.
In his new bedroom, Angel and Cordy talk about Connor and if he will return and our vision girl assures him he will because, "He's family." This doesn't seem to comfort Angel much.
At Wesley's apartment, our ex-researcher is having a drink and it seems to be another after several. An email message comes up on his computer, "782 West Palm Terrace. 8:30pm Come alone." He reads it with some thought.
Back at the Hyperion, with the Geiger in hand, Fred's invention is working and picking up the readings of the tear, when she suddenly gets a big reading near the stairs and it's Connor. Angel is surprised and they greet each other with a "Hey." Angel quickly introduces Stephen to the crew and they quickly leave to conduct a perimeter search to give them some much needed time alone. But their time is short-lived because Cordy has a vision of a woman at a bar with a gang of vampires after her. Angel tries to explain his "job" and instead invites his son to come along. He is after all his son.
Act II
At a crowded nightclub with raging techno music, Wesley is watching from a balcony as Lilah meets him on her secret invitation. Below is Justine at the bar, invited by a "source" who told her that vampires would be present and that same source invited all the upset undead into the bar. She offers a front row seat to Wes to watch the woman who sliced his throat. He hesitates to think about the two choices: walk away or warn Justine - but it's a test. He hesitated enough to let Lilah know her courtship of him into the employment of Wolfram & Hart is worthwhile. But Wesley spots Angel amid the crowd and perhaps there is hope for Justine.
In the dancing crowd below, Angel gives Connor a stake and advises him to wait to see their "game face" but Connor questions why he kills those like him. They approach Justine, as she turns to leave the bartender turns vamp. Angel springs into action and Connor mimics his moves. They fight side-by-side complimenting each other. Justine runs out.
Up above, Lilah and Wesley watch with fascination as they see a young man fight with such Angel-like style. There can only be one answer as Wesley discovers he moves just like his father. Wesley is definitely interested now but leaves before Lilah can stop him.
Father and Son fight off the vampires and end up chasing them into the back alley where Connor dusts one. The fight over, Angel finally bonds with his son and compliments his fighting ability. Connor smiles for the first time and they play-fight in the alley testing each other's anticipation skills. In the dark shadows of the alley, Holtz watches his adopted-son smile and play with his long-time enemy but true father.
A while later, Connor is snacking on Oreos as Holtz returns to the motel. Connor covers up by admitting that Angel tried to deceive him by fighting against other vampires, and saving people, but Connor can't be fooled because he has seen Angel's true face. Holtz only answers, "And I have seen yours."
Back at Angel's bedroom, our proud vamp-dad is re-telling the nights events, especially Connor's skills. Angel is definitely proud of his son and his destiny. Cordy explains that with her new powers she can revisit a vision and continue to experience it, which made it possible for her to see the night's events for herself. They are both very happy.
At the motel, Holtz reveals that Connor must return to Angel because it his destiny to be with his true father, but Connor refuses straight out. Holtz doesn't have answers but Angel does and he wants Connor to return to his demon father regardless.
Across from the French Cottage Motel, Fred and Gunn are parked, still following emissions given off by whatever came out of the portal, but feel a bit helpless as to what to do next.
Inside the room, Connor is angered at Holtz's words that their return was brought forth by his destiny to return to a demon father. He stomps out determined to prove his adopted father wrong.
Outside the motel, Gunn spots Connor and realizes they have been following Connor's emissions all this time. However, he also spots Holtz closing the door behind his son. Things are clearer now.
In the Hyperion lobby, Lorne makes himself a nightcap when an angry Connor comes and insults Lorne by calling him "demon" as if it were a dirty bad evil thing. Lorne gets riled up but Cordy interrupts and tries to explain the part about the good demons and that Lorne is one of them, including her. Connor is surprised at her admission especially since her demon half was by choice. Connor's anger breaks free and so does his homemade knife as he aims it at Cordy's throat.
Act III
In the lobby, the situation is tense but Cordelia stays Conner's hand as she begins to glow with her newly found demon power that covers Connor as well the knife disappears. His anger recedes as she soothes him, "Let it go, honey. You don't need any of that." She begins to comfort him and he cries on her shoulder. From the top of the stairs Angel watches his son's healing.
Moments later, Angel checks on Cordy who feels drained and Lorne compliments her powers and reveals that Connor was "toxic" when he arrived that night. In his professional opinion, Cordy gave Connor a soul colonic, which explains the high readings Fred was taking of Connor. He was sick with Quor-toth but now he is cleansed of that hell-dimension and Angel is very thankful.
Angel takes a moment with his son to ask him to stay, "This is where you're supposed to be son." Connor is contemplating Holtz's words and doesn't know what to do. Fred and Gunn interrupt their talk and Gunn indicates he needs to talk to Angel alone.
Across town, Holtz gets a visitor, Justine.
A bit later, Angel asks Gunn and Fred to take Connor out for a couple of hours while he visits Holtz. Cordy tries to make Angel change his mind and argues that he shouldn't lie to his son about visiting Holtz so soon. As usual, Angel doesn't listen and marches off.
In the motel room, Justine reaffirms her belief and dedication to Holtz, amazed that he could survive in such a dimension. Hate is a good motivator but Holtz has changed and admits he loves his son but sometimes love is not enough. He asks Justine to do one last thing for him.
At the beach, near a pier, Fred and Gunn show Connor the ocean, which he sees as a vast an empty place. He walks to the breaking waves while Gunn and Fred stand back and discuss what they are really doing there: distracting Connor to give some time to Angel to visit his son's kidnapper and deal with Holtz in his own way. Connor turns around at that admission, amazingly Connor's ears have been honed for hunting and he heard their conversation from such a distance. He takes off running to warn Holtz.
Act IV
At the Hyperion Hotel, Cordy spots Angel in the shadows and she brightens with a smile not believing that Angel actually heeded her words. But her face falls, as she realizes it is Groosalugg, finally returned from his long walk. She didn't even know he had been gone.
In the motel room, Holtz finishes a letter as he feels Angel's presence and he enters freely since it is a public accommodation. He slams Holtz against the wall finally expressing anger at the man who stole his son, but Holtz reminds Angel that he kept Connor alive while Angel murdered his. Angel is remorseful and apologizes to his long-time enemy, which is somewhat comforting to Holtz after all these centuries. Holtz admits that an aged man can no longer offer anything to Connor, but Angel can and wants him to take Connor once again to give their son his purpose. He no longer has any taste for vengeance and hands Angel the unsealed letter to give to Connor.
Through a dark alley, Connor is desperately running trying to get to Holtz.
Angel parks near the beach and begins to read the letter. There's a voiceover of Holtz reading his words as Connor runs through a busy street superimposed with a scene behind the motel alley, where Holtz forces Justine to take his life. Connor stumbles onto the street.
Holtz continues his narration, "Your destiny lies with Angel I know that now." Near the beach, Angel smiles knowing that now his son can truly return to him.
Connor finds Holtz in the alley with Justine cradling his head on her lap. Connor sees the two fang-like marks in his neck due to the puncture wounds from Justines ice pick and pronounces only one name, "Angelus!" Holtz wants to ensure he is the only father in Connor's heart.
