Episode 1, Season 4 Title: "Deep Down"
Written by: Steve DeKnight Directed by: Terrence O'Hara Original Air Date: 6 October 2002
Teaser:
The camera pans over a table filled with goodies; mashed potatoes, green beans, roast beef, and seated around the table are good friends. Angel smiles broadly as he sees his family back together again with Cordelia, his love, by his side and Connor his son. Around the table Wesley, Lorne, Fred and Gunn are seated as well. Angel wants to freeze the moment enjoying that everyone is together again, especially after their troubles during the summer. Wesley offers a toast to "family." Cordy reminds Angel that they will survive and she is prepared to fight anything that threatens them. They begin to serve themselves as they chatter and pass around the food but forget about Angel. He becomes upset as he wants to share in the food and grabs a plate but finds it empty when he sets it down. Suddenly, the room turns a hue of dark blue and everyone is gone except for Connor, "Freeze the moment dad. It'll last forever."
Water fills the room and Angel's face turns dry and parts of his skin crack. We see that Angel is still trapped at the bottom of the ocean where Connor left him.
Act I:
Late at night in LA, two cars filled with a vampire gang chase Gunn and Fred. Gunn is forced to stop his truck in an alley and they jump out armed to face the vampires. Their leader isn't happy that our heroes are bothering his "homies" but Fred explains they are only looking for Marissa. She is the one and only lead to Angel's disappearance. The vampy leader directs them to a condemned building off Figueroa, but not before trying to get a piece of them. Fred's use of Angel's weapons has improved and with Gunn's help manages to dust most of the vamps. Connor steps in and saves Fred from being cut in half and dusts the last one. Angel's son is still part of the mission and he is proud of his handy work, "Did you see that? Wasn't that cool?" Referring to his skills with an axe, but Gunn doesn't look like he wants to discuss any cool.
Back at headquarters, Fred explains to Connor that he can't just disappear. Gunn orders him to polish the axe, while he and Fred go into the main office to search for the building through the web. We find out that after three months of searching for Angel and Cordy, our heroes are much closer to an eviction notice than finding their friends. They need to work on getting paying clients but prefer to focus on Angel and Cordy. Their only lead is a vampire named Marissa that used the beach near Angel's last locale as her feeding ground. Lorne is in Las Vegas singing for tourists and too busy to answer Fred's constant calls. Fred finds Marissa's building and they discuss their next steps as Connor overhears them by the door.
Near the beach, waves pummel the rocks at DuPont Point; Cordy finally makes it in time to meet Angel on their "date." Angel recalls the truth about Connor and realizes this meeting for what it is --another hallucination. He wishes things are not as they really are and she agrees. She confesses her love and they kiss. Angel returns the kiss but turns vamp face and feeds on her. "I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!"
He screams and awakens in his watery coffin. The need for blood is even invading his hallucinations.
Back in the main office, Connor asks why Fred and Gunn hadn't informed him about their lead sooner, but they wanted to be sure before giving him false hopes. Connor leaves to get his weapons happy that Fred has allowed him to join them on their search for Marissa. She does this against Gunn's better judgment. Connor may scare away their only lead, especially since asking for help from Wolfram & Hart is not a possibility or even asking Wesley.
Across town, Wesley is sharing his bed once more with Lilah, seems they have come together more often since the last time we saw them. She tries to find out if Wesley knows anything about Angel's disappearance since Wolfram & Hart is also curious as to his whereabouts but Wes knows nothing at all. She leaves unsatisfied with his answer but not his performance. Wes quickly jumps out of bed and opens a closet door to reveal Justine inside a cage, chained to the wall and gagged. Wesley suggests, "Let's go for a boat ride."
Act II:
On a fishing trawler, Wesley and Justine are using underwater sonar to search for Angel's watery coffin. Both are taunting each other with their mistakes of the past few months with a sarcastic bite. Justine attempts to knock out Wes with a wrench but he warns her hell take away her bucket, and she realizes Wes is truly in control.
At the abandoned building, our crew finds an empty room but Connor's sharp ears catch the sound of a playing cd player on an old dirty mattress. Marissa attacks from the ceiling and is quickly captured by Connor. After some questions, she describes Angel but escapes before she can reveal what she knows. Connor jumps through the top floor window after the only witness that can reveal his betrayal. Connor catches up to a very frightened Marissa on the rooftop. She assures Connor that she knows nothing, "It'll be our little secret." He stakes her and then cuts his arm feigning a vamp attack just as Fred and Gunn catch up too. He explains to Gunn that she left him no choice. Gunn is extremely upset since their only lead after three months is dust. Connor runs off into the night.
Atop another building roof, Angel walks up to Connor as he enjoys the LA skyline. Before Angel can have a one-on-one with his son, a few vampires join them and a fight breaks out. Father and son join forces to defeat them. After its over, Angel smiles and gives his son a congratulatory pat but then quickly knees Connor.
Beneath the ocean, Angel screams several times, waking from his dream.
In Las Vegas, a large burly man, gives a decked out Lorne the phone. Fred is calling, asking if Lorne's leads have turned up anything but nothing has. They hang up and Gunn doesn't like the way things are looking.
At Wolfram & Hart, Linwood, Lilah, and Gavin are chatting in the halls. Gavin has found out through the psychics that Angel is "safe and immobilized." Linwood is happy to find that Angel is out of their way but Lilah doesn't see it that way since Angel is part of the prophecies. The psychics also revealed Lilah's time with Wesley. She makes it clear that she's not pumping Wes for information. Linwood reminds them of the staff meeting.
Still on the boat, Wesley's sonar turns up a large object. Justine swims down and finds it to be Angel's steel prison and Wes pulls it out with the boats crane. Once above, Justine reluctantly helps Wes open the box. Just as the door comes off, Angel grabs Wes by the neck-- hard.
Act III:
Below the deck of the boat, Wes has Angel laid out and feeds him animal blood to get his strength back. Justine reminds Wes that despite his efforts, he will not be welcomed back. Our vampire expert reveals that vampires can live indefinitely without blood but that the damage to the brain can be catastrophic. Angel drinks hungrily from the jar of blood, as Justine looks on, disgusted.
In the lobby of Angel Investigations, Connor finally returns and Gunn gets after him. He runs upstairs before things get heated and Fred calms Gunn down. The phone rings as they kiss and Gunn reluctantly picks it up.
Back at the boat, Angel begins to mumble but doesn't make any sense. Angel hallucinates that Lorne is next to him chatting and then sings to him. He then sees Connor but Angel has only one thing to say, "I should've killed you." In reality, it is Wesley standing by his side. He realizes that animal blood is not enough and Wes cuts his own arm and holds it out for Angel to feed on.
At Wolfram & Hart, a conference room fills with executives including Linwood and Gavin for the staff meeting. Linwood would like to review Lilah's less than shiny record, especially her failures. She quickly intercedes and points out Linwood's "wait and see" attitude towards Angel because of his lack of courage. Linwood is outraged that Lilah went over his head and obtained Suvarta's, a Senior Partner, support in her opinion of Linwood and belief that fear breeds weakness. She touches her PDA and an automated knife slides behind Linwood and instantly decapitates him. The heads rolls to the middle of the conference table. Everyone now reports to Lilah and she orders everyone out, but not before asking Gavin to take Linwood's head with him.
At the Hyperion, Fred delivers a sandwich to Connor in his bedroom. Fred comments about the life Connor must have had in the alternate dimension, but she adds, "It's not nearly as much as you're going to hurt for what you did to your father." She surprises him with a stun gun and uses it on him.
Act IV:
Connor is tied to a chair as Fred and Gunn reveal their knowledge of Connor's betrayal. An "old friend" has saved Angel and filled them in. A very angry Fred stuns Connor once again and Gunn has to hold her back.
At the docks, Wes has placed a semi-conscious Angel in the front seat of his SUV. Justine is handcuffed to the dock and she taunts him with visions of Angel turning on him. Wes drops the keys to her handcuffs on the ground and reminds her that she can continue being a slave or live her life as he drives off.
In the main office, Connor is still tied to the chair as Fred and Gunn keep watch. Wesley arrives with Angel and places him on the sofa. Gunn is angry that Wes didn't warn them sooner about Connor. Wes knows that Connor wouldn't hurt humans and they would have been safer not knowing. Wes turns to leave and lets them know Angel will need more blood. Connor quickly overtakes them with the stun gun but Angel stops his son and fills Connor in on being trapped under the ocean for three months and the truth about Holtz's death. Connor knows he's in big trouble and tries to leave but with super human speed Angel throws his son against the wall. Wes has filled in Angel on the events since his watery incarceration. He confesses he had nothing to do with Cordy's disappearance and Angel accepts his answer. The three months have given Angel an additional perspective on life. He realized that they need to live life as it should be to show others what it can be, not a cruel place like it is to so many. Angel loves his son but asks him to leave his house. Connor runs out and Angel collapses. Fred and Gunn run to his aid but Angel needs only one thing, Cordy.
A bright light surrounds a Cordy, still dressed in white. She is in a higher dimension using her newly found powers. But she has only one thing to say, "God, I am so bored!" Becoming a higher being has not changed our Cordy!
