Episode 5, Season 4 Title: "Supersymmetry"
Written by: Elizabeth Craft & Sarah Fain Directed by: Bill Norton Original Air Date: 3 November 2002
Teaser:
At the Hyperion, screams are heard through the halls. Winifred screams with joy as her article "Supersymmetry & P-Dimensional Subspace" is published in Moder's Physics Review. Gunn twirls her around and attempts to make sense of the scientific words that mean nothing to him. Fred knows better and climbs on him to kiss him passionately. Clothes start to come off, the article long forgotten.
Across the hotel, Lorne is in bed as Angel brings him some dinner. He is still recovering from the hole in the forehead. He is also stressed over the vision he saw when he read Cordy. Lorne also figures out that Angel wants him to read Cordy again and he is not up for it. Angel hears something in the hotel and quickly follows the sound leaving Lorne in bed.
He follows the noise to Cordy's room and surprises Connor by slamming him against the wall. Connor explains he is there gathering things for her and Angel asks about her safety but his son isn't there to chat. He quickly gathers Cordy's things and Angel gives him Cordy's fuzzy clippers as her feet get cold. Conner replies that she's always stealing the covers. He slips out the window leaving his father behind with a brooding face.
Act I:
Morning at the Hyperion, Angel walks down to find Gunn in the lobby and Fred practicing her speech to Lorne in the office. Angel and Gunn join them so that Fred can practice on them. Our physicist is happy and nervous about her presentation at the Physics Institute. Angel is unusually quite and Lorne informs them that Connor visited last night. Despite the pain and anguish, Fred credits her five year in Pylea for her string compactication theory and tries to give hope to Angel that everything will be okay.
At Wesley's apartment, Lilah arrives with a gift, a very expensive steel helmet. Wes sees it as a bribe for her previous betrayal and Lilah tries to make up, but Wes has a more important place to be and leaves. Behind him Lilah is surprised and picks up a copy of the physics magazine Wes was reading before she interrupted written by Fred.
At the warehouse, Cordy is adding the feminine touch to her and Connor's room with pictures of friends sans Angel. She decorates a table with a light scarf and Connor catches a glimpse of her ample breasts and smiles. Cordy feels "something" is still missing and he hands her an axe, perhaps she misses the "action." Connor offers to train to her but she only has one worry, "What should I wear?" Our old Cordy is coming back sooner than she thinks!
At the Physics Institute, Fred is accompanied by Angel and Gunn. She spots an old Prof, Dr. Seidel, and he congratulates her on her accomplishments. She introduces Angel and Gunn and Dr. Seidel as they continue to chat physics, while Angel runs inside the auditorium. Gunn watches as Fred promises to visit her prof the next day and continue to chat about things Gunn can't even pronounce.
Angel and Gunn take their seats inside the auditorium but in the far corner he catches Wesley taking his own as well. Dr. Seidel introduces Fred and she begins her speech on dimensional theories. Lilah steps inside, scans the audience, and sees Wes watching Fred with clear interest, give her speech. He actually understands our young budding physicist. Lilah is not happy and she pulls out her cell phone as she walks out. Jealous anyone?
As Fred gives her speech on the possibilities of extra-dimension existence parallels to our reality, a portal opens above her and tentacles with claws at the ends reach out and grab her. Angel, Gunn and Wes hurry towards the stage.
Act II:
In the auditorium, Gunn immediately springs to action and catches his girlfriend's legs holding on for dear life. Angel follows suit by fighting the tentacles but for a moment the mysterious creature seem to have the upper hand. Wes is delayed by the escaping audience members. A student spectator snaps away with his hand held camera. Angel fetches a knife concealed in his boot and cuts off the tentacle around him and falls. The creature quickly lets go and disappears back into its dimension, while Wes, with knife in hand, stops midway to the stage and retreats. No one has an explanation for what just happened.
In the covered parking area, Lilah is driving off but stops when her car top tears into shreds. Angel interrogates her about Fred's mishap and midway he realizes our evil lady lawyer had nothing to do with it. He gives her a warning about Lorne as well and she drives off.
Back in her room, in the middle of the night, Fred is theorizing on the walls again, nervously. Gunn wakes up and comforts Fred, who is reliving nightmares from Pylea considering the day's events. Fred is embarrassed that her professor was a witness to everything and her boyfriend coaxes her to bed and to sleep. He and Angel will take care of everything.
In the morning, Gunn steps into the lobby to find Angel has spread out chairs and is trying to recall the people sitting in the auditorium. The playback reveals Lilah was following Wesley. He also recalls a guy with a t-shirt that said "Thwack" with a camera and Gunn knows just where to find him.
Across LA in a comic book shop, Gunn is manhandling the comic-guy from the auditorium as Angel looks on. They question him and he reveals he was there to see if Fred was really one of the students that disappeared. Gun is definitely interested now, "One of them?"
At Dr. Seidel's lab, we find that Fred has confessed her Pylean travels to her favorite professor. He introduces Laurie Drummond, a long time teaching assistant of his, that isn't as talented as our Fred. They enter his private office that is located in the back of the lab. The Professor wants to teach Fred again and explains that what he saw may have been mass hysteria or subconscious suggestion to make her feel better. He encourages Fred to pursue her talents.
At the comic book shop, it turns out that comic-guy knows about Angel via the on-line chat rooms and our hero is a popular topic. He also lets them know about his research into disappearing students. There were several with Fred and all were "science types".
Back at the office, Prof. Siedel asks for Fred's contact numbers as he steps out to check on the lab. Alone, Fred peruses her prof's book collection and sees a book out of order and pulls it out. She flips it open and discovers the book contains spells for opening inter-dimensional portals and a picture with the creature that assaulted her the day before. Dr. Siedel walks in on her.
At the Hyperion, Angel and Gunn do a little research and find out that all the missing students have one thing in common: all were students of Dr. Siedel. Fred arrives and she reveals that she already knows and that he is the one that sent her to Pylea. Gunn assures her that he is going to pay but Fred has something else in mind, "He's going to die."
Act III:
In the office, Gunn is worried about Fred's words. She opens the weapons cabinet and tries a few of the weapons for options to torture her Dr. Siegel. Fred's memories of Pylea have clouded her mind and the mission she has adopted about helping people, not killing them. Gunn calms her down and she goes upstairs to rest. Gunn and Angel realize they had better take care of Dr. Siegel because Fred can still change her mind. Vengeance is not a good thing.
A while later, Fred is at Wesley's asking for his help and he is willing but warns her that "vengeance will have a price". Fred is still adamant about her serial killer professor and Wes opens one of his books as she looks on when her cell phone rings and strange characters fill its screen. A portal opens that nearly sucks her through it but Wes pulls her away and both fall to the floor.
Below Los Angeles, Connor and Cordelia are fighting a vampire. Connor is down and Cordy steps into to make the kill. She's overjoyed and hugs Connor but follows it with a quick kiss. Connor wants more and returns the kiss. She steps back surprised and serious.
In Fred's room, Gunn and Angel realize their sweet little physicist has skipped out on them. They feel like fools and run out to find Dr. Seidel before Fred does.
On the road to the lab, Wesley drives while Fred arms a large crossbow and he reminds her that she can still change her mind but she is determined. They arrive and she steps out sans Wesley.
At Dr. Seidel's office, Angel stops the physicist but he quickly opens his spell book and repeats one of the spells. A portal opens and a Voynok demon walks out of it to entertain Angel with some fighting. Dr. Siedel takes his book and runs out.
Outside, in the lab, Fred surprises her ex-favorite professor by knocking him down. "You know what they say about payback? Well, I'm the pregnant dog!" And, she points the crossbow at him.
Act IV:
In the warehouse, Cordy is folding away her clothes when Connor cozies up to her and asks if she wants more training. Cordy decides to talk with Connor about their kiss. She thinks it best if she returns to the Hyperion to have some time to think. This upsets Connor very much but he can't do anything about it. Cordy leaves and Connor punches the wall.
Still in Dr. Siedel's office, Angel fights the demon and manages to smash its head with the phone. Angel leaves thinking it is dead but the demon refuses to die and grabs Angel's leg. The fight continues.
Meanwhile, outside the office, Fred holds Dr. Siedel prisoner with the crossbow. He appeals to her begging; knowing that she is not capable of hurting anyone but he forgets that living in a hell dimension can change a person.
The fight continues inside the office even though Angel has decapitated the demon. The demon grows a new head and attacks.
Outside, Fred knows that Dr. Seidel was the one that sent her to Pylea. In fact, he sent every promising student to it, essentially, sending them to their death. She repeats some magic words and a portal on the floor appears just as Gunn arrives. He begs her to stop but Gunn doesn't understand her pain. Gunn is worried that if she goes through with it that he will lose her. Dr. Siedel is struggling to stay in this dimension as the hole is sucking in furniture. Gunn helps him but suddenly and quickly snaps his neck and lets him fall into the hole and it seals immediately. Angel finally comes out ready to fight but finds things are taken care of by Gunn.
Later, they arrive at the Hyperion, and we find that Gunn has told Angel that the professor fell into an interdimensional hole by his own creation. Gunn and Fred are sullen and walk up the stairs in silence. Angel finds himself alone but not for long because Cordy stands at the opposite end of the lobby. She asks him out to the courtyard.
In the courtyard beneath the night sky, Cordy knows that they were friends and she now understands why they first lied to her. She also knows she's strong enough to not need protecting. She asks that Angel no longer lie to her and he promises. But the next question from Cordy has Angel wishing he hadn't promised, "Were we in love?" Angel falls silent and gazes at her.
