Episode 11, Season 4 Title: "Soulless"
Written by: Sarah Fain & Elizabeth Craft Directed by: Sean Astin Original Air Date: 5 February 2003
Teaser:
On the dark streets of Los Angeles, Connor staves off a pack of vampires with a bundle of newspapers bearing the headline: Crime Wave Shuts Down City. But these vamps are tourists from Tucson and although Connor quickly turns their vacation dreams to dust more loom on the horizon.
At the Hyperion, Wesley opens the office safe which will house the glass jar containing Angel's soul. Carefully locked inside he states to the Investigation's crew that, "Angel is gone." Cordelia and Wesley reiterate the viciousness of Angelus' history and warn everyone not to drop their guard when confronting him.
Down in the basement, Angelus sits in a dark, far corner of his cage, softly singing: "If you go into the woods tonight you won't believe your eyes. If you go into the woods tonight you're in for a big surprise."
Act I:
Wesley is the first to venture downstairs in an attempt to discover what Angelus knows about the Beast. He admits the one-on-one confrontation with the legendary Angelus is a high point of this former Watcher's career. All pomp and circumstance aside Angelus offers only questions, one being why Angel would create the Raiders of the Lost Arc fantasy and reveals Angel killed the Beast with a sword. But Angelus soon turns profit to pain when he exposes Wesley's real motives: "You want to impress the girl."
Upstairs in the lobby, the rest of the gang listen and watch on the monitor as Angelus continues to reveal Wesley's crush on Fred. Cordy explains that what makes Angelus so dangerous is his ability to distort everything by lying 'with the truth' but Gunn is visibly upset.
Downstairs, Wesley congratulates Angelus on exploiting a vulnerable spot and wants to move on. Wes tries to get Angelus to admit that he and the Beast were adversaries but Angelus only continues to attack Wesley's demeanor angering him. Wes counters that Angel's fight against evil must tear Angelus up. But Angelus quickly brings up Wesley's downfalls: his relationship with his father or there lack of, the kidnapping of Connor, his failure as Faith's Watcher and finally Cordelia.
Cordy watches on the monitor as Angelus mocks her emotional devotion to Angel. Angelus next exposes Cordelia's tryst with Connor for the gang upstairs as Lorne tries to warn off Fred's sordid reflection. Just then, Connor returns from his fighting--a little worse for wear--as the gang states at him. Wesley enters announcing Angelus' request for blood.
Gunn, armed with crossbow, and Fred walk downstairs. "Othello and Desdemona," states Angelus and poignantly observes that Desdemona 'wasn't in love with the other guy'. As Gunn keeps the bolt pointed at Angelus as he taunts Fred about the things he hears at night. She places the glass of blood on a tray and slowly pushes it towards the bars, just as Angelus takes the glass, a rye smile upon his face, he kicks the tray causing Fred to fall forward and into his grasp.
Act II:
Gunn rushes to save Fred but Angelus' grasp is too strong, just then he is hit by a tranquilizer dart, and then another. Wesley's comes down the stairs and warns Gunn never to drop his weapon then heads back up as Fred is comforted by Gunn's embrace.
Cordy enters Connor's room and offers him one of Angels' shirts as he straps on the wrist stakes preparing to go out again, despite his exhaustion. Cordy explains the gang's looks earlier referred to their encounter not the Beast; she repeats that the person saying all these things is Angelus not Angel.
Down in the office, Fred enters to thank Wesley for saving her. She tells Wes Gunn heard what Angelus said about his feeling as he steps forward and kisses her passionately. Gunn walks in and warns Wesley to stay away from Fred.
Down in his cage, Angelus overhears the arguing and smiles.
Back upstairs, the words and accusations continue to fly between Gunn and Wesley as they move into the lobby while Fred tries to calm them down. Connor passes through on his way to the basement and Cordy and Lorne enter. Angry words turn to fists, as Gunn and Wes go to blows, until Fred is accidentally hit in the crossfire by Gunn. On the monitor Cordy notices Connor approaching Angelus' cage.
Connor decides to see the evil Angelus for himself who wastes no time in bringing up Connor's own ramifications: Darla staking herself, Holtz stabbing himself, and a relationship with the only woman resembling a mother figure as well as trying to kill his father. Angelus taunts Connor that he can't 'take him' in a fight and just as Connor approaches the cage Cordy arrives and orders him to go upstairs. When they are alone, Cordy shuts off the camera and confronts Angelus for all the damage he's inflicted for one day. She offers him a deal; everything he knows on the Beast in return for Cordy herself.
Act III:
Cordy continues to ask Angelus to give them the information on the Beast for her own sacrifice.
Upstairs, the gang-once again calm and collected-question Cordy why Angelus is ready to give them what they need. Connor is the first to realize she's made a bargain but Cordy won't tell them.
Awhile later, Wesley is sitting on a chair in front of the cage as Angelus reflects back to Prussia, 1789. During a shortcut on his way to Vienna, Angelus came across a massacre of the Beast staged to impress him. The Svea of Priestesses had targeted the Beast for banishment and only a vampire could stop them. The Beast offered Angelus a pact but he declined and the Beast was banished.
Upstairs the research begins; Fred discovers the Svea of Priestesses (aka the Svear, a mystical order) are all descendants of the Nordic priestess Svea. Wesley translates the Freyan Runes to reveal they did indeed banish the Beast and Gunn discovers one such descendant in the local phone book: 25-minutes away in Pacoima.
Arriving at the residence, Wesley, Connor and Cordelia find the front door open. Inside the house a grisly discovery reveals that the Beast has again kept one step ahead.
Act IV:
Everyone in the house has been brutally murdered. Wesley discovers a banishment incantation but the scene is more than Connor can handle as he runs outside. Cordelia follows to comfort him but vampires quickly attack them as Wesley speeds up in the car and they safely drive off.
Back at the Hyperion, the rest of the gang watch Angelus on the monitor when Wesley, Cordy and Connor return. Fred wonders if Angelus may know more but Wes insists he's told them everything. Cordy suggests it's time to bring back Angel as Connor heads upstairs and Wesley's states they will again need the Shaman.
Cordelia heads down to the basement and informs Angelus the Beast beat them to the Priestesses. Angelus looks to close his deal with Cordy but she explains the fine print, 'world not saved'.
Upstairs in the office, Wesley opens the safe.
Angelus chuckles when Cordy tells him the news, "We're putting your soul back." She explains that Angel's return will be the end of Angelus forever when he stops the Apocalypse. Angelus lashes out through his bars but Cordy, safely away by only inches, doesn't even flinch.
When Cordy enters the office, the gang's expressions reveal something is amiss. Angel's soul is gone. The safe is empty!
