Episode 16, Season 4 Title: "Players"
Written by: Jeffrey Bell, Elizabeth Craft & Sarah Fain Directed by: Michael Grossman Original Air Date: 26 March 2003
Teaser:
In the Hyperion lobby, Cordelia's pregnancy is revealed by her first appearance downstairs in weeks, and all the onlookers are in total shock. After Gunn wisecracks that Angel will have a grandspawn a very protective Connor is hurt and stalks off to his room. Cordelia tries to ease the mood by stating that she feels how good their child is. When he's born, they'll all see. With a wicked grin, she turns from the group, and her stomach begins to writhe as if there are multiple squirming organisms within her protruding abdomen.
Act I:
By a fountain in the darkness, a young man nervously waits. Suddenly Gwen appears from behind, startling Garrett and asks for her 'stuff'. He reminds her that she is up against some very powerful people that will kill her if they catch her. Aware of the job risks Gwen is not 'coming out without Lisa'. She hands Garrett an envelope in exchange for documents containing security, blueprints and background. Just then Gwen gets hit by a bolt of lightning and is literally thrown through the air. As she lands she sarcastically shouts that she is fine as Garrett takes off running in the other direction!
Back at the hotel, Fred, Wesley and Lorne are in the main lobby as Gunn paces trying to get the facts together: two vamps have a baby for the first time in history who then 'knocks it out' with Cordelia, a part demon, former higher being who is now pregnant. As Fred reminds them what happened when Connor also tried to fight Angelus, Wesley remarks that Connor is at least part demon. They all agree that it won't be long before Cordy gives birth. Angel steps from his office, focusing on Wesley he confesses that Angelus did not kill Lilah, she was already dead, killed by the beast. Wesley is visibly shocked and moved as Angel, not excusing what Angelus did, relays his sorrow for Wesley's loss. Two pressing matters remain, namely Cordelia's pregnancy and destroying the beast's master. Angel directs Lorne to check out his contacts, Fred and Wesley are to check out mystical births in the books and files. Angel would like Gunn to sit tight as available muscle if needed while he goes to rethink everything he can remember as Angelus. Gwen arrives unexpectedly, much to Fred's disdain. She needs help, someone 'suave who can handle himself in a tight spot'. Angel would love to help but it is a bad time as they have an apocalypse, but Gwen wants Gunn!
Upstairs Connor is brooding alone in his room as Cordy arrives. He doesn't understand why she said Willow opened a gate to evil when she put back Angel's soul and is upset that he almost killed Angel. Cordy explains that everything happens for a reason as she recounts all he has done, having led to this miracle - her pregnancy. Cordy assures Connor she can trust him completely and may ask him to do some things, 'for us' and she wants him to remember that there is always a reason.
At Gwen's apartment, Gunn is looking at some of the artifacts Gwen has collected on her travels. Asked if he has collected anything, he tells her about his battle scars. Gwen explains that she was hired by one client to prevent another from getting a contract. But the latter kidnapped a young girl, Lisa, the daughter of the man who first hired Gwen. With Gunn's help Gwen thinks they have a shot at saving Lisa before the girl is killed. As they go through the layout and security plans Gunn can't help but smile and explains that with his demon lifestyle of late, he is happy to be doing good for a real person.
A limo pulls up outside a large country house; Gunn and Gwen emerge, dressed to the nines. They enter the house and make it through the first check point, an infrared doorway. They then pass through the second security check, metal detectors. As they go through to the party and Gwen hands over her invitation, Gunn thinks they have made it, but then an alarm bleep.
Act II:
In the foyer, the security guards inform the duo that the electronic imprint on their invitation has been altered. Gwen tries to explain that occurred when she was struck by lighting. The guards don't buy it and ask them to leave. Gwen presses Gunn to fight but Gunn swings into full suave mode and calls "Hello" across the room to Mr. Morimoto in Japanese. Gunn implies to Mr. Morimoto that they met last year at a Zoo benefit and then gives him a gift - Gwen's jade tiger. The guards press them to leave again but Mr. Morimoto nods at the guards to let them stay.
Back at the Hyperion, Wes and Fred research the possible causes for Cordelia's demon pregnancy. Fred expresses her confusion and displeasure at Connor and Cordy's relationship and Wes explains how it probably came about as the conversation turns to his own unconventional relationship with Lilah. Fred is confused and questions that he hated her. Wes expresses that sometimes a relationship is more than just holding hands.
Gwen and Gunn mingle among the guests at the party. Gwen shows Gunn that she stole the jade tiger back from Morimoto as the little kidnapped girl, Lisa, is brought into the room surrounded by huge bodyguards. Gwen takes a closer look.
Angel is up in his room at the Hyperion trying to commit to paper what he saw as Angelus. He senses someone outside his door and invites Cordy into his room. Cordy asks about his status and Angel muses that the latest strikes against them were too specific and sophisticated for The Beast. He theorizes that the Beast's Master was calling all the shots. Cordy rattles off all of the recent events and blithely questions why the Master's would attempt such dangerous things under their roof. Angel then mocks The Master questioning if he really had a plan at all causing Cordy's mood to go dark.
Meanwhile, Gunn is hobnobbing with the party elite when Gwen returns. She takes Gunn aside and shares that Lisa will be killed tonight and sends Gunn to get Lisa while she attempts to create a distraction. On the other side of the room, Gwen knocks a large table over and Gunn takes the opportunity to grab the little girl. Gwen immediately tells security that Lisa has been taken. Gunn takes her into a side room assuring her they are almost free when he gets hit in the head from behind.
Act III:
Gunn gets up off the floor to find himself facing four of Morimoto's men armed with staffs and Samurai swords. The fighting ensues and Gunn is more than happy to let off some steam making quick work of the henchman, even while taking a moment to straighten his tie. As he approaches Lisa to take her home he discovers that she is home, she is Aiko Morimoto - Gunn's been punk'd.
In another part of the estate, Gwen is working the combination on a safe. Gunn appears from behind and deduces she used him to get through the scanners. Gwen admits she set him up as the fall guy and explains that L-I-S-A is actually a military acronym: Localized Ionic Sensory Activator. A covert devise worn by Black Ops that regulates body heat, heartbeat, and body chem; Morimoto's company designed it, and Gwen was hired to steal the Beta test. Gunn begins to leave but Gwen convinces him to stay by promising him his suit.
In his office, Angel writes on a notepad as Wesley and Fred look on. Cordy enters just as he finishes a passage from Lilah's book that the Beast destroyed. He's been able to visualize the text in order to recreate it and Wes recognizes it as early Fallorian Code System. As Wesley begins to translate, Cordy prepares to spill a coffee cup but Angel's attempts are lacking. Wes explains an inverted serif can alter the meaning of an entire passage and Angel tries again.
Back in the safe room, Gwen opens the combination only to find another key-code lock behind it. But it's a piece of cake for her electric works as she pops open the door and removes the device. Just when things look good, Morimoto and his goons appear in the doorway.
Angel has scripted out another rendition of the code and Wesley attempts another translation, but 'strangling poultry' ain't it. Just as Angel gets up to take a much-needed break, Lorne enters with 'joyous news'. His source found no information on the Beast but a demon named Wanda gave him a cleansing ritual to restore his empathic abilities. It must be preformed in a dark, dusty, nowhere-land of a place but come morning he'll be fully restored and able to read Cordy's belly, much to her feigned delight.
Meanwhile, Morimoto tells Gwen to put the device down but she refuses. Gunn is willing to support her until Morimoto's men pulls guns on them. Gunn is not willing to die for the devise or Gwen but she holds firm and will keep it at all cost. As the tension mounts, she finally lets loose with an electric shockwave which kills Morimoto and all his men and they fall to the floor.
Act IV:
In the estate, Gwen continues to electrocute Morimoto and his men but Gunn tackles her to disrupt the flow of electricity. As they get up he realizes that Gwen is stealing the device for herself because it may be able to "fix" her.
In an abandoned warehouse, Lorne, donning a large dark cape, approaches the center of the floor and the lights kick out. He makes his way to a pedestal and lights some candles. From above, Cordelia watches with a knife in hand.
Back at Gwen's apartment, she praises Gunn's "brains over brawn approach," but he is too modest to admit anything. She notices that he has really started to believe that he is just muscle. When asked why he stays with Angel, Gunn replies that he is a "fighter, born and raised." Gwen stays a thief because it makes her a part of something, and yet not a part at the same time. She admits that her outburst in the mansion was the worst it gets, but the device could let her at least hold hands.
In the bedroom, Gwen removes her robe and lies face down on the bed. Gunn touches her with one finger and withdraws as she sparks and places the device down on her back. It begins to spread a network under her skin as readings flash across the tiny monitor. Gwen says she doesn't feel any different and Gunn hesitantly taps her back. No sparks. He continues to touch her but Gwen interrupts thanking him for turning her "off." In turn, he kisses her but she pulls away and says the device is only a prototype and may not hold. Gunn says she already killed him once and they continue kissing.
Back in the warehouse, Cordelia stalks above on the catwalk as Lorne pours oils and spreads black powder over his hands. Incense lit, he puts on his hood and begins to chant to sheet music from a book. We see Cordelia's boots come down the steps as she creeps up from behind and brings the knife up in the air. Suddenly all the lights kick on and Angel is there. She turns to run but Wesley and Fred are holding a shotgun and pistol, blocking her way. Lorne reveals a Magic 8-Ball from his cloak, he asks if Cordy has been a bad, bad girl and it says, "Definitely."
