Written by: Elizabeth Craft & Sarah Fain Directed by: Marita Grabiak Original Air Date: 9 April 2003
Teaser:
In the aftermath of Cordelia giving birth at the loft, a naked woman crosses the room to clothe herself as Angel and Connor appear mesmerized by her transcendent beauty. She bends over Cordelia, thanking her for protecting and nurturing her, which Connor acknowledges was Cordelia's only wish. As she takes in the surroundings, The Lady seems genuinely filled with a fascination for her newfound physicality. Angel kneels in front of her, offering both his sword and his apologies for ever trying to kill her. He feels that it is only right that he should be punished. The woman says she understands and promises an end to his suffering. Thinking that she meant to kill him, Angel is surprised to look up and find that the woman has disappeared.
Act I:
In the Hyperion office, Fred picks up scattered books and papers as a result of the Master's birth while Lorne sips on his drink. A buzzing is heard which is Gunn and Wesley in the basement disembodying Skip. Fred's thoughts continue to jump subjects, she can't believe Cordy was chosen by the chosen by the Beast Master to be the Vessel, if Angel and Connor found Cordy yet, and whether Angel would really kill Cordy. Just then, Fred notices Connor in the lobby, and grabbing a knife goes after him.
Storming into the lobby, she's confused when Connor acts all nice and sincere. Angel appears standing with Cordelia on the couch, as Wes and Gunn come up from the basement. Gunn wonders if they succeeded in killing it? Wesley, with urgency, wants to find her but Connor stresses, 'not to kill', since they've all been saved. Angel states, "We just want to find her so we can worship her." Wesley realizes what Angel's feeling is some form of enchantment, that the Master controlled Cordy. Then the Lady slowly comes down the stairs and one by one they kneel. She wants to help rectify all the horrors, if they'll have her.
Gunn and Fred light candles within Cordelia's room while she sleeps in her bed. The Lady states she's glad to be back, and Wesley offers that she's been here before. She begins to tell them her tale, "Before the time of men, great beings walked the earth. Untold power emanated from all quarters, the seeds of what would come to be known as good and evil." Then the Earth became a demon world, those who resisted, left. Then man emerged and a balance was restored. The beings became observers to the suffering so she wanted to come back but a miracle was needed and arranged through Angel and Darla, via Lorne during The Trial - many of the past events unfolded so she could re-enter this plane. Time to change world. "Finally," said Angel.
At a downtown bowling alley, vampires are using human heads as bowling balls, as one of them observes that 'something big is coming.' Suddenly Angel and the gang arrive and the fighting and dusting ensue, as The Lady and Fred take a seat. She wonders what she is to be called just as a vampire slashes her arm. Fred gets upset that The Lady has been harmed but Angel chases the vampire out into the street.
Outside in the nearby courtyard, Angel catches the vampire and dusts him as the rest of the gang catches up. Upon seeing The Lady, the people gathered in the courtyard kneel. She tells them to stand, she knows each and every one by name but one young man takes up a knife from a table and calls her a monster with an attempt to kill her. Protecting The Lady, Angel vamps out and repeated punches the man on the ground.
Act II:
In the courtyard, Angel continues to viciously beat the man but The Lady stops Angel from killing him. The man weeps in pain but begs The Lady not to touch him as she gently caresses his face and Wesley offers to call for an ambulance. She addresses the 'strong and loving' crowd telling them that the beaten man is full of fear and anger but the rest of them have found each other.
Back in the Hyperion lobby, Wesley and Gunn suggest possible names as The Lady happily listens. Fred comes downstairs with The Lady's shirt in hand obsessing over getting the bloodstain out as she feels it was her fault that The Lady was hurt in the first place. The Lady patiently explains that she considers any ability to feel to be a gift since she had no body before her rebirth. The Lady confronts Wes and Gunn about their shared love for Fred and tells them to come together over their common feelings. Connor enters the room and apologizes to her for the wound as well. But when they examine it, the wound has already healed. The Lady attributes it to having once been a higher power.
Outside in the courtyard, The Lady approaches Angel remarking on the scent of the night blooming Jasmine. Angel is distraught about almost killing the man and is worried he will fail her again. He then confesses his incredible happiness due her presence which makes him fear it will bring Angelus forth again. She says soon all evil will be gone and he won't have to worry anymore. She names Angel her General in the fight and the rest of the team her warriors.
The Lady's voice lays out her plan to defeat evil while Angel, Wes, Gunn and Connor enter a vampire nest and draw them into battle in slow motion. Angel lops off a demon's head while Wesley stabs another and Connor dusts a vamp.
At the same time in the hotel, Fred furiously scrubs at The Lady's shirt in a sink trying to get rid of the bloodstain to no avail.
Later in the Hyperion, the A.I. team watch a news broadcast reporting the dramatic decrease in Los Angeles murders. They happily discuss their victories over evil when Lorne descends the stairs and invites The Lady to come upstairs for a surprise and she follows. Fred enters the lobby with the shirt, sniffling she shows it to the gang for their approval. When they compliment her on it looking brand new Fred breaks down in sobs and admits she bought a new one. She explains she is really sobbing because she feels so empty when The Lady is not around.
In a newly decorated bedroom of the hotel, Lorne presents The Lady with her new quarters to which she praises him warmly. The sent of Jasmine fills the air, and she claims that for her name. He leaves but she immediately senses a troubled Connor in the hall and beckons him in. Connor admits he is happy that he finally has a purpose but is conflicted at being so happy when he has done so much wrong. The Lady tells him she needed to have a unique soul so she could be born and that his destiny is now. Fred enters to give The Lady the new shirt but when she looks at her usual beautiful face instead there is maggot-infested flesh.
Act III:
In Jasmine's bedroom Fred stares at the maggoty face in horror as she asks what's wrong. Fred cries in shock as Connor looks on with worry. Gunn, Wesley, and Lorne enter to see what is the matter as they try to comfort her. Fred rambles off an excuse for her demeanor, claiming she was just thinking what it would be like if Jasmine wasn't there. Jasmine assures her that she is not going anywhere. Fred hands the sweater to Wesley and runs off.
In Cordy's room, Fred confides in the comatose Cordy who continues to sleep in her bed. Fred tells her she saw the horror Lorne had seen before his brain was sucked and wonders if it is all true, worrying since no one will be able to fight back, not even Angel. Angel sneaks up and says he knows what she is thinking. Fred is relieved when she realizes Angel is still blind and only sees Jasmin's beauty. As Angel mourns over the fact that he almost killed Cordy, Fred begins to hint at how it is odd that everything is so different and easy. However, Angel finds it all a relief and happily says that it is all over.
At the hospital, Fred nervously convinces the nurse she's there to see John Stohler, the man angel attacked in the acourtyard. He is in the psychiatric unit under locked doors. She hides behind a cart as a nurse exits his room and sneaks in before the door closes. She inquires if he was crazy 'before Thursday' and says that she saw Jasmin's face as well. John's face turned from her, agitatedly asks if Jasmine touched Fred. He turns his head to reveal massive boils and scarring on the left side of his face, from her touch. He asks to be untied so he can finish killing Jasmine as he explains that since she can see it too, Fred has been called to a mission and it is her duty to kill Jasmine. Fred's phone suddenly rings, it's Angel, and she rushes out as John shouts "Don't trust anyone!"
In the Hyperion courtyard, Fred approaches the entrance as two girls pass her, praising Jasmine. In the lobby there is a mass of people as Lorne asks Fred where she has been and explains that Jasmine went for a walk and everyone followed her back. Fred approaches Wesley confiding in him about what she saw and of visiting John and he appears to believe her. On the second floor Jasmine, Angel, and Connor stand by the balcony. Fred is relieved until she sees Wesley talk suspiciously with Gunn who then stalks towards her and whispers to Lorne as Wesley goes upstairs and informs Jasmine. Desperate, Fred takes a knife and a crossbow out of the weapons cabinet. She aims it at Jasmine, and says "I'm sorry," and fires.
Act IV:
In the Hyperion lobby, as Fred lets loose a bolt from her crossbow, it strikes Angel as both he and Connor leap over the railing to the lobby floor. When Lorne approaches her, Fred grabs him and places a knife at his throat threatening to kill him if they come near her, but Jasmine assures Fred her love will follow her everywhere. Fred shoves Lorne at Angel as she flees from the lobby.
In her car, Fred drives the deserted streets of L.A., eventually pulling over she's breaks down and sobs.
Back at the Hyperion, Wesley reflects on Fred's actions in disbelief while Jasmine assures Lorne this is what hatred can do to a person. Angel soon blames himself for not seeing Fred acting like Fred. Wes, Gunn and Connor consider the man at the hospital may be the cause but Jasmine explains that even Fred doesn't understand why she is bent on destroying what Jasmine has created, making herself all the more dangerous. Angel states they now have to kill Fred but first Jasmine wants to help her, find the root of this hatred, and suggests to look for her tomorrow when they will have many more to help them.
At a local diner, Fred eats breakfast while watching 'Good Morning L.A.' with none other than, 'very special guest', Jasmine. Fred's reaction is one of shock as all those in the diner begin to kneel down as Jasmine begins her 'before the time of man' speech.
Walking out into the street, Fred finds herself pretty much alone as she heads off down the sidewalk.
