Plot Team Angel is shocked when Spike appears out of an amulet that someone sent to Angel. Spike was suppose to have died back in Sunnydale, but now he's returned as a ghost. And he's really unhappy about it. Angel has to deal with an evil necromancer and with Spike, who might just be willing to turn on Team Angel if it'll make him corporeal again.
Goofs * Revealing mistakes: Although subtle movements by at least three of the dead bodies in Hainsley's showroom could be written off to the way they were mounted, or being buffeted by air currents, the illusion is somewhat spoiled when his manservant enters the room and the corpse closest to Angel quite clearly blinks. * Revealing mistakes: In the scene where the butler comes to kill Angel, one of the dead women behind Angel blinks. * Audio/visual unsynchronized: You could tell a large amount of Spike's lines were looped, as his mouth sometimes doesn't fit what he's saying. * Continuity: If Spike cannot touch anything at all -- this is a big point throughout the season - - how on earth can he sit in Angel's chair? And why doesn't anybody call him on it?

Episode 2, Season 5 Title: "Just Rewards"
Written by: David Fury & Ben Edlund Directed by: James A. Contner Original Air Date: October 8th, 2003
Teaser:
Flashback to Sunnydale, California; at the Hellmouth, nineteen days earlier. As Spike, wearing the amulet is hit by sunlight, beams radiate all around the Hellmouth. He urges Buffy to get out and she holds his hand briefly, tears in her eyes before leaving. Spike says, "I wanna see how it ends," then bursts into flames.
Back in the present in Angel's office, Spike, disoriented glances around at the startled faces of all the crew. Wesley explains to Fred that Spike is one of the worst recorded vampires, second only to Angel. Spike swings around, vamps out, and charges Angel only to go right through him much to everyone's surprise. "Bugger," says Spike, realising he is standing inside the desk!
Act I:
Spike is informed by Harmony that he is a ghost as Wesley deduces that Spike came from the amulet confirmed by Angel as the same one he gave to Buffy to save the world. Angel reluctantly reassures Spike that Buffy is ok yet Harmony is disgusted to learn about Spike and Buffy's relationship. Wesley explains to the others that Spike was an ally of Buffy's and Gunn asks if Spike is a good guy like Angel. Angel is insistent that Spike is nothing like him whilst the bewildered Spike just needs to know what is happening.
In Fred's lab at Wolfram & Hart, Wesley looks through a microscope as Fred scans Spike, confirming she is picking up electromagnetic readings consistent with spiritual entities. Fred is surprised to pick up brainwave activity and also that they can see Spike, him being a ghost. Wesley confirms that whatever Spike is, he is tied to the amulet and Fred wonders if he has been sent by the Powers That Be. Suddenly Spike fades away only to reappear a few seconds later with no memory of where he has been. Blaming Angel, as he brought the amulet to Sunnydale, an argument ensues and the gang inadvertently learn that Spike has a soul and are shocked that Angel withheld this important fact.
Angel walks to his office as Spike appears through the wall and continues to goad Angel. Following him into the lobby where, becoming serious for a moment, he asks what Angel is doing in the middle of Wolfram & Hart, warning him he is not in control. At this moment a Grox'Lar beast steps from the elevator. Angel fights the beast, eventually breaking its neck, and angrily asks the surrounding staff how the beast got through security. As Spike and Angel resume their argument, Harmony points out that Angel has just killed his 3pm appointment. Suited up, Gunn appears; ready to meet the client and explaining that he has been given knowledge of all demon law too.
In Angel's office, Gunn produces a voodoo doll of himself; apparently there are some disgruntled employees. Spike follows them in and watches by the door as one such employee appears to complain at the closure of the 'Grave Robbing Department'. This will upset a major client, Douglas Hainsley and Angel orders the frightened employee to inform Mr Hainsley he is no longer a client. Spike tells Angel that the slayer would not be impressed, a hero reduced to a bureaucrat. Angel orders him out and Spike leaves, intending to leave L.A.
Darkness falls and Angel sits alone in his office. Wesley appears and Angel explains how it should have been he who wore the amulet which was given to him by Wolfram & Hart. They must have been expecting him to wear it. Wesley ponders their reason for giving him Wolfram & Hart in that case. Spike returns, he is unable to leave the city as he is tied to the amulet which in turn is tied to Wolfram & Hart. At that moment Harmony knocks and informs Angel that the lawyer, Novak, he sent to see Mr Hainsley is back, unfortunately in pieces in three buckets which are deposited on Angel's desk.
Act II:
Angel enters the lobby as Gunn appears with the file on Hainsley. Turns out he is a sorcerer and a necromancer with a huge amount of stock in Wolfram & Hart. Wesley joins them entering Angel's office to find Spike at Angel's desk. Realising the buckets are a message, Angel decides to tackle Mr Hainsley himself. Wesley warns him that the 'an eye for an eye' approach is not the right course but Gunn knows exactly what to do.
Angel exits the elevator in the underground car park and heads to the Viper to find Spike inside who is warming to the idea of haunting Angel, walking on to a different car Spike appears there too.
Arriving at Hainsley's house, Angel informs the butler he is from Wolfram & Hart. As they wait for Hainsley they wander down the hall into a showroom full of dead, stuffed bodies.
In another room, a dead woman lies on a stone slab above a ritual star. A man stands over her, his hand floating along and above her body in the way of a healer; a demon looks on. The man inserts his hand into the body and stretches his left arm towards the demon. Particles from the demon travel up his left arm and down his right into the dead body. The butler enters the room announcing Angel's arrival and is instructed by Hainsley to kill them.
Back in the showroom, the butler re-appears waving two huge butcher's knives. Angel, unimpressed, takes a spoon from the cup a corpse is holding and throws it at the butler lodging it in his forehead, killing him. Another argument ensues, Angel has it too good; Spike saved the world and has ended up a ghost, it's not fair. Angel rounds on him pointing out that Spike asked for a soul and he didn't, Angel spent 100-years coming to terms with it, Spike spent three weeks in a basement. As Angel's anger spills over Spike disappears again.
Knocking down the door Angel enters the ritual room. Hainsley is startled to see 'the head cheese' as the demon-inhabited dead-girl rises from the table but is knocked down by Angel. Hainsley holds out his arm and takes control over Angel who is being drawn across the floor against his will. Hainsley admits to Angel the senior partners have plans for him so he can't stake him. Angel has his own plan and makes a call to Gunn, telling Hainsley that all his assets and bank accounts are now frozen as Hainsley threatens to sue. As Spike and Angel leave, Spike disappears again only to find himself back with Hainsley who offers him a corporeal form in exchange for hurting Angel and Spike smiles, "You've come to the right ghost!"
Act III:
Arriving back at the Law Firm, Angel is greeted by Gunn who informs him that all Hainsley's assets have been destroyed. Walking into Angel's office they are joined by Wesley and Fred and Angel suspects that the Hainsley problem is not over but is more interested in how they get rid of Spike. Fred tells him that Spike can't get out of Wolfram & Hart but Wesley thinks they could give him the eternal rest he has asked for.
Spike walks past Harmony's desk in the lobby; after she gives him a piece of her mind he leans in to listen at the door of Angel's office. Wesley is talking about an exorcism which Fred is against, although Wesley agrees, he feels Spike's current state of being is unfair too, he is unable to touch anything or fight and it would be merciful to let Spike cross over. The amulet would need to be destroyed on hallowed ground but Angel wants to sleep on it. Fred puts the amulet on his desk and Spike hides as the gang leave.
Taking the amulet, Angel goes to his private apartment in Wolfram & Hart. As he gets into bed Spike appears and Angel informs him that his apartment is off limits but Spike is not there for a fight and admits that the necromancer offered the return of his body and soul in exchange for double-crossing Angel. Spike is offended that Angel has forgotten he is a good guy now before admitting that he just wants it all to end.
Spike and Angel take the amulet to the graveyard to destroy it on hallowed ground. Angel attempting but unable to smash the amulet is suddenly lifted into the air and propelled against a gravestone by the power of Hainsley. Spike wonders what took him so long, he was nearly toast. Spike is adamant he will not be used, but Hainsley has different ideas; he promises Spike will be back in control afterwards.
Act IV:
Angel, awakening on the slab over the ritual star at Hainsley's house, finds he is powerless and unable to rise from the table. Hainsley's plan is to put Spike in Angel's body where he will reinstate all of Hainsley's assets. As he takes over his body, Angel will go to neverneverland and Spike will run Wolfram & Hart and have everything he wants, including Fred he taunts. Hainsley has never done this on a conscious dead body before and laughs at Angel's forthcoming pain.
Closing his eyes Hainsley inserts his hand into Angel's stomach and holds his left hand towards Spike who disintegrates into a mass of green particles and travels up his arm. As Angel grimaces in pain, the green mass begins to enter him but then suddenly reverses back up Hainsleys arm as Angel jumps from the table and punches him. Spike is in control of Hainsley's body and his powers fail. Angel punches him and he hits the table then slumps to the ground apparently dead. Rising again, they continue to fight until Angel throws a silver tray severing Hainsley's head and revealing Spike who admits he wanted to get in a couple of punches.
The next morning at Wolfram & Hart, Angel reveals Spike's plan to Wesley who comments that it would be a good idea for Spike to share his plans with the group in future.
Later, Fred leaves her lab and is startled to find Spike in her office. He talks of her knowledge of the 'how's and what ifs' as the science queen. Although quick to point out that Wesley is the expert on the occult, Fred does offer to help him. He confesses that he is slipping and he doesn't want to go, the ground is opening up and pulling him in and Fred asks if that is where he goes when he keeps vanishing. He admits that he knows what is down there and it is not the place heroes go but the one full of fire and torment, and he is terrified. He turns to Fred uttering, "Help me."
