Episode 10, Season 5 Title: "Soul Purpose"
Written by: Brent Fletcher Directed by: David Boreanaz Original Air Date: January 21st, 2004
Teaser:
Flashback to the end of the fight in Destiny and Spike is about to drink from the cup as Angel tells him it is not Spike's destiny; it is his. Spike tells him that it was never about him and drinks from the cup then becomes bathed in light from above as Angel's face begins to burn. Crying out, Angel wakes from his dream; he is seated at his desk in the dark.
In a strip bar, Spike downs his drink and prepares to leave when another shot is placed on the table by Lindsey McDonald, unaware of who he is, Spike tells him to shove off. Spike is leaving when Lindsey calls him by name and asks if he has had any interesting mail lately, this grabs his attention and he demands to know who Lindsey is. "Your new best friend", replies Lindsey.
Act I:
Spike deduces that Lindsey sent him the amulet and is responsible for bringing him back to life and asks why. Avoiding his question, Lindsey tells him that lots of people are interested in him but Spike, in no mood to play games, smashes Lindsey's glass and grabbing his arm, looks at the markings, asking who or what he is and what he wants. Lindsey tells him his name is Doyle and that this is about what Spike wants; he has his life back so what is he going to do with it?
At Wolfram & Hart, Gunn and Wesley walk through the lobby discussing an evil warlock and how best to deal with him. Entering Angel's office they begin to argue and Angel demands to know what it is about as Wesley hands him a folder on the warlock, Lucian Drake. Gunn informs Angel that he is a cult leader who has over a thousand followers and they sacrifice children for demonic mojo and Wesley adds that he stockpiles dangerous weapons in black magic. Angel asks if they want Wolfram & Hart to stop him but neither wants this, Gunn thinks it would be bad for business and Wesley thinks they should covertly take out the leader to halt them for a while leading Angel to wonder if they are doing this because it is right or cost effective. As Wesley admits it is both Angel is upset that they are in a grey area again and asks them to explain it over.
Spike has had enough but as he leaves the bar, Lindsey tells him it is his destiny to be in L.A provoking Spike to grab him by the throat and ask if it was his destiny to drink from a cup filled with nothing as he surmises that it was Lindsey who sent them on the quest. Spike doesn't like being played but Lindsey is adamant that he knows nothing, he is just doing what 'they' tell him; he was a drifter when one day he stared having visions about people in trouble and he needs a champion. Spike tells him that is Angel's thing but Lindsey says that Angel is not in the picture anymore as he is on the wrong side now and he has had a vision tonight which is why he is here finally asking if a young girl gets murdered tonight and Spike has done nothing could he live with it.
A girl is chased and caught by a vampire in an alley but as he is about to bite her Spike arrives, calls him out, punches him through a fence then stakes him on the broken fence in a matter on moments. The girl thanks him but Spike just gives her a serve about walking in alleys at night telling her to get a cab next time. Lindsey has been watching and wonders if Spike now believes him but Spike, not convinced, plays it down, leading Lindsey to remind him he just saved a girl's life although next time he should be a little nicer afterwards. Spike points out that he has been saving people long before he showed up but Lindsey tells him this is different as there was nothing in this for Spike unlike before and that Angel didn't save the girl on his first mission. Spike asks what this has to do with Angel and Lindsey replies, "Nothing, not anymore!"
In Angel's office Gunn and Wesley continue to argue over the battle plan and as Fred arrives, Wesley asks if they could eliminate someone with the Wolfram & Hart satellite without being traced. Fred confirms that they do have such a weapon and as all three continue a discussion Angel zones out for a moment before stating that they should just kill them all and go back to the good versus evil ethos. Gunn asks if Angel is ok; he is just tired and instructs Gunn to meet with his best Judas and feel him out but if there is any inkling that he is leaking information to Drake then they will go with Wesley's plan. Fred advises Angel to go and rest now and sleep in tomorrow as they can take care of things.
Angel enters his bedroom and Wesley arrives helping him over to the bed as Angel admits that he is sick and he doesn't feel right. Wesley agrees it must be hard adjusting to the new situation and, as he is asked what situation, informs Angel that he is now irrelevant. Angel is bewildered and begins to ask Wesley what is happening but Wesley stakes him and he wakes up terrified.
Act II:
Spike takes on two vamps in an alley, eventually staking them with the wrist attached extendable stakes that Angel once had. The people he has saved ask who he is and he tells them he is the hero.
At Wolfram & Hart Wesley gives Harmony an envelope regarding the warlock situation and instructs her to use his code to obtain a cheque from Accounting. As she leaves, Eve arrives with a piece of broken relic covered with ancient markings which she eventually agrees to give to Wesley after he tells her Angel is not available. The Senior Partners don't know what it is and they need to learn all they can about it as they suspect it may be powerful and Wesley promises to get on it right way. Harmony re-appears to remind Wesley that she should notify Angel immediately of anything relating to the Senior Partners but Wesley reassures her that he will tell Angel as soon as he knows anything as he needs to rest.
Angel is hallucinating in bed, waking up as Fred enters the room he tells her that something is wrong, and snapping on some surgical gloves she assures him that she knows what to do as he suddenly finds himself in her lab. Angel looks on in horror and pain as Fred slices him open from chest to stomach, pulling out his liver and kidneys and then his heart which is in fact a walnut. She then proceeds to pull out a string of pearls, some raisins which she eats, a number plate and then rooting around she pulls out a goldfish bowl stating, "There's your soul", before announcing that there is nothing wrong with him except that he is an empty shell and as she peers down into his gaping wound we see he is still asleep.
Fred is inspecting Eve's relic in Wesley's office as Gunn arrives with a report on a vigilante operating in town; from the description Wesley deduces that it is Spike.
Lindsey shows Spike into a basement apartment telling him that it is his [Spike's] but Spike doesn't want to be kept so Lindsey points out that he is just offering a place to hang his hat and that this is a place for a hero.
Angel wakes up in bed to find Spike and Buffy having sex. Spike turns to him telling him he has something on his shirt but he is confused as Buffy is talking about the Prom and he thought he was taking Buffy to the Prom. Angel wakes up again. Angel enters the lobby and Fred approaches him welcoming him back but pointing out he has bare feet. Gunn arrives calling that they will miss it as Fred follows him into Angel's office and Angel discovers that his office is like a movie theatre where everyone is watching L.A on fire through the window. As Harmony scolds him for blocking her view of the apocalypse, Angel is horrified, he has to do something and as he turns to face his colleagues Lorne tells him he has something on his shirt and he looks down to see a blood stain.
In bed Angel is still in a feverish dream and we see a leach type parasite sucking his chest.
Act III:
All the gang and some employees are gathered in Angel's office where Fred holds out a cake to Spike as they all sing 'For he's a jolly good fellow' and Wesley calls for a speech, Angel stood in the doorway watching. Spike thanks them, stating that he is just fulfilling his destiny and it was nothing but Fred gushes that he single handedly stopped Armageddon and made the world into a beautiful place. As they all turn to see a fairytale castle through the window, Gunn tells Spike it is time for his reward but Spike protests that he didn't do it for a reward and Gunn says that is why he is getting one. A fairy arrives and sprinkles magic dust on Spike, making him human and as he announces that his heart is beating Fred and Gunn rush over to listen as Angel looks dejectedly at the scene before shuffling off with his mail cart.
Spike invites Gunn and Wesley into his pad and Gunn asks why he is still in L.A as Wesley comments that Spike has been busy and that they have heard he is fighting the good fight. Spike wonders if he has been stepping on their toes but they are actually there to recruit him, they have all the resources he needs but he doesn't want to join the evil law firm. Gunn tells him that they have changed things around but Spike is sure that it will never change rather it will change them and knows that Angel would never sanction it anyway, suddenly realising that he hasn't and wondering what is going on.
Lindsey and Eve lie on the bed at Lindsey's apartment pleased that their attempt to distract the gang at Wolfram & Hart is working. The ancient relic is a fake and Spike is so far buying into the hero stuff and no one is watching Angel, the plan being to keep building up Spike while bringing Angel down in order to fool the Senior Partners into thinking they have backed the wrong horse. If the Senior Partners find out it is Lindsey they will kill him and it seems that the ancient script markings on his body and apartment walls are providing some sort of protective barrier against them. Eve thinks they are sexy and he tells her she can think whatever she wants after they have finished their project to which she wonders if that means she will get what she wants. He tells her she will and as he starts to kiss her she reaches out to touch a box on the bedside table saying that this will be fun.
Back at Wolfram & Hart, Wesley and Gunn tell Fred that Spike thinks they sold out and Fred wonders if they should tell Angel, suddenly realising nobody has heard from him all day. She asks Harmony to call Angel and as the phone rings in his bedroom he wakes up to find Lorne playing the piano vaudeville style.
Back at Harmony's desk Eve approaches Fred to ask about the relic telling her that the Senior Partners are on her back and it is really important. Fred heads off to look into it.
Lorne is playing 'Clementine' on the piano in Angel's bedroom and Angel tells him he is lost and everything hurts. He asks Lorne what to do and Lorne asks him to sing as suddenly a spotlight appears on his bed but he has lost his voice and as he looks across the room we see Gunn, Fred and Wesley at a table in the corner. Wesley tells him they paid blood for this as Gunn with cat eyes roars at him and Lorne tells Angel they are turning on him. Eve arrives and sympathises that he is still suffering as Lorne asks if he still has that thing on his shirt and Angel looks down to see the parasite. He wakes up and pulls off the parasite, crushing it, as Eve calls out to him telling him he is still dreaming but not to worry as his dream is almost over and she opens the box to reveal another much bigger parasite.
Act IV:
Eve smiles at Angel as she watches the parasite crawl up his body but as it is about to strike he grabs it, throwing it across the room as he falls to the floor.
Spike arrives back at his apartment to find Lindsey is there to check up on him. Spike is not happy but then Lindsey has a vision which he assures Spike he will definitely want to act on.
Angel crawls along the floor in his bedroom and pulls the phone off the dresser but the parasite attacks him again, sinking his fangs into Angels chest as suddenly Angel is sitting outside in a chair in a field on a sunny day. Fred, Lorne, Gunn and Wesley approach him and Wesley invites him to stay as long as he likes, he can stay forever, but Angel says he has too much to do. Gunn tells him they will take care of it, Lorne tells him to let himself go and Wesley says that he can finish if he wants to as Fred confirms that they will be ok and all he has to do is stop caring. They all scream and suddenly Angel is back in his apartment and the parasite is screaming as Spike kills it and Angel, after realising it is Spike, collapses again.
In Angel's apartment, Wesley explains to the gang that it was a Selminth Parasite which injects its hosts with an anaesthetic which is why Angel didn't feel it and also the drug it releases causes fever and hallucinations and eventually would have put Angel into a permanent vegetative state. The gang wonder how Spike knew to save him and also how the parasite got into the building and Angel suddenly looks at Eve accusing her as he remembers killing the first one only for her to release the bigger one. Wesley is sure he dreamt it but Angel notes that she has changed her clothes but she forgot her earrings, she is wearing the same pair he saw in his hallucination and he hasn't seen her for days. Eve tells him she has worn them before but Fred comments that she has never seen them and as Eve questions their implication, Angel points out that the Senior Partner's would not have given him the law firm to then turn him into a vegetable. He asks her if she is playing her own game and wonders what the Senior Partners would do if they found out but Eve accuses him of trying to find someone to blame outside his circle and heads to the elevator parting with the advice that he should look within.
