Episode 12, Season 5 Title: "You're Welcome"
Written & Directed by: David Fury Original Air Date: February 4th, 2004
Teaser:
A large cross stands on a table in a room dimly lit by candles. The door breaks in, Angel, Wesley and Gunn enter, followed by Fred who announces 'he' has been here as she is picking up readings with her technical instrument then, looking down, she sees the five slaughtered nuns lying on the floor. Gunn wonders why Greenwood would do this; only up for racketeering they could get him probation as long as he closed down operations. Angel is angry, hating the fact that he is their client and proposing to kill him but Wesley informs them that the slaughter was of a ritual nature and Greenwood has jumped dimensions, leading Angel to announce that he can't run Wolfram & Hart anymore, he has had enough, he quits.
An unknown entity speeds along a hospital corridor; there is a flash of the ancient markings on the inside of Lindsey's apartment, then a figure lying in a hospital bed, next Angel cries out in pain, faced by an unknown assailant then finally we see it is Cordelia in the bed as she gasps with the knowledge of her vision and wakes from her coma.
Act I:
The gang are in Angel's office attempting to persuade him to change his mind but Angel says that evil is winning because instead of wiping it out they are negotiating with it and they should not be doing this job. Gunn thinks they would not be able to leave without ramifications and Angel questions where his loyalties lie but Gunn is adamant they all got something from this and they did make the right choice. The phone rings and as Angel answers he is obviously shocked leading the others to ask what's wrong, he says, "It's Cordelia".
As Wesley and Angel enter the hospital room, there is someone in the bed and as Angel calls out to Cordelia, she answers and walks out to them drawing the curtain around the bed, telling them that lady is in a bad way. As they both give her a hug, Wesley tells her she looks hot and she is thrilled and puts it down to the mystical coma confirming too that she remembers everything that happened to her. She senses that they are subdued and asks if everything is ok and if they brought her some clothes but they forgot so that means a shopping spree, to her delight.
Cordelia tentatively steps from the elevator at Wolfram & Hart, trying to take it all in as Lorne, Gunn and Fred approach to welcome and hug her. She asks after Connor and is met with blank stares and, "Who?" as Angel wonders what to say, just then Harmony squeals with surprise and rushes to hug Cordelia thus saving the awkward moment. Cordelia is shocked to find Harmony working at Wolfram & Hart so Angel, after ushering off the others back to work, attempts to explain that things are working out; with the resources now available there is no-one they can't save. Cordelia is worried about Angel saving himself explaining the vision she had which woke her from her coma, she tells him of the symbols on the wall and flesh and the tattoo before realising that a woman, Eve, has entered Angel's office. Eve informs Angel that the Senior Partners are unhappy about Greenwood skipping dimensions then turns her attention to Cordelia who introduces herself then snubs Eve 'Cordy style'. Eve, in an attempt to stir up trouble, mentions that she slept with Angel who explains that it was under a mystical influence and Eve leaves his office. Cordelia tells Angel he has made a deal with the devil.
Lindsey arrives unannounced in Spike's apartment, Spike hasn't been in the field much lately but he blames it on the fact that his hand was chopped off by the deranged slayer Lindsey sent him after. Lindsey reminds him he has a job to do and the PTB are counting on him so Spike agrees to go out as soon as Doyle [Lindsey] has a vision. Lindsey gets a phone call from Eve who informs him that Cordelia is awake and is steering Angel right to him so Lindsey decides they need a change of plan.
Act II:
Entering his apartment Angel finds Cordelia, unwilling to sleep after being in a coma for so long, watching the Doyle 'super hero' ad on his TV. Angel admits he hasn't watched it in a long time and Cordelia comments on how he was the first soldier down and he didn't compromise but sacrificed himself to make sure Angel would keep on fighting. Angel knows what she's getting at and explains that there are good reasons why he agreed to take over Wolfram & Hart but Cordelia thinks she knows; they seduced him with money and facilities but in her eyes there could be no reason good enough. Angel explains how in return for him taking the job they altered reality and gave Connor a new life with a family, a past and a future; only Angel and Cordelia remember him. Cordelia can't believe he gave up his son and allowed them to take away the memory of Connor from his friends so he explains how Connor was about to kill her and it was the only way, that Connor is happy and everything is fine at Wolfram & Hart too but Cordelia doesn't buy it and she knows Angel doesn't either; she thinks that is why the PTB gave her the vision. Angel tells Cordelia that the Powers have a new champion in Spike, he saved the world and he is helping the helpless as Cordelia wonders what is going on. Angel admits he is lost without her but she tells him he needs to find his own way and all she can do is remind him of whom he once was - a guy who always fought for what was right, no matter what the cost, he just needs to get back on track. Cordelia asks if he ever wonders what would have happened had they met that night and he admits he does, all the time, but maybe they were never meant to meet.
Out on the balcony at Lindsey's apartment he tells Eve that now Cordelia is awake the stakes are higher as the Powers are taking an interest which suits him fine. He is angry that Wolfram & Hart gave everything he worked for to Angel and Eve acknowledges that it all comes back to Angel, he is the centre of Lindsey's universe but Lindsey tells her she is.
In Wesley's Office he and Cordelia reminisce about old times when they hit the books the old fashioned way but Wesley ruefully admits he won't do it again. Cordelia asks Wesley why nobody is talking about what happened to her last year when she did the terrible things and he reassures her that they all know it wasn't really her but even so, obviously upset, she needs to say sorry. Suddenly a book on the desk containing pictures of the tattoos catches her eye, they are protection runes from the Enochian alphabet and Wesley deduces that they protect the bearer from being viewed by higher powers or any means of modern surveillance, so somebody really wants to stay hidden.
Lindsey, wearing overalls, enters the maintenance area at the law firm and after descending the stairs he walks through all the light beams completely undetected before stopping to wave at the surveillance camera. He approaches a demon in a lab-coat from behind, kills him and steals a crystal from around his neck.
Cordelia walks along the corridor at the law firm, she is surprised to see Spike and tells him she has heard he is not evil anymore; he morphs out and bites her.
Act III:
Angel appears and they fight but Spike tells Angel Cordelia is evil, after some verbal sparring Spike tells them it was a taste test to make sure his source was telling him the truth, and actually Cordelia doesn't taste evil. Angel asks what source and Spike tells him about the guy he met who has visions from the PTB and how he told him that Cordelia had been taken over by a big bad. Angel says this is old news leading Spike to admit that 'tattoo boy' must be wrong this time and as Cordelia, suspicious, asks about the tattoos Angel also asks his name and they are shocked to find his name is Doyle.
Eve, watching from the other end of the corridor, phones Lindsey to relay that Spike did not kill her but he says he is almost there and she must get out of the building now. As she hangs up she find herself face to face with Angel and Cordelia who grabs her hair and drags her off.
All the gang are assembled in Angel's office where Angel relays Spike's recent history including how he knew from 'Doyle' to save Angel from the parasite that Eve put on him. As Eve attempts to leave, stating that she doesn't know what Angel is talking about, Cordelia threatens her; she and Angel are furious that the guy has the nerve to use Doyle's name. Suddenly Harmony appears to inform them that everyone has left the building and Angel asks Eve what is going on.
In the basement, Lindsey charges up a large machine and places the stolen crystal into a cylinder which starts a digital countdown clock. The floor lights up under a large mechanical circle which unlocks as Lindsey says, "Wakey, wakey".
Back in Angel's office Gunn informs them that a 'code seven' was issued before the building was evacuated but Eve will not tell them what that is so Cordelia asks him to torture her. Uncomfortable, he refuses but Harmony is happy to volunteer and Eve confesses that the Senior Partners, never sure whether they could control Angel, devised a failsafe which is housed under the building and although she doesn't know its specific nature she does know it is huge, alive and designed to destroy Angel. The gang realise that it must be the faux Doyle who activated the failsafe so Angel asks Spike if he can remember anything else about him and he recalls that the guy had his hand chopped off once. Realising that it is Lindsey, Angel instructs Gunn to shut the building down so he can't get out. Wesley and Lorne head off to try and find a way to strip away Lindsey's protective runes and Angel asks Harmony to guard Eve, telling her to eat her if she moves. Cordelia insists on fighting with Angel and Spike and grabbing a large sword she follows them to the basement.
In the failsafe, Cordelia, Angel and Spike cross the light beam which triggers the alarm and unleashes some zombies and as the fight begins Spike offers to hold them off so Angel and Cordelia can continue on.
Lindsey taps a large tank under the circle, saying goodbye to Angel, but as he turns around he is face to face with Angel and Cordelia. Lindsey thinks there is always time for redemption but Angel tells him he had his chance but some people never change. "I did", says Lindsey as he throws Angel across the room.
Act IV:
Angel tells Cordelia to leave but Lindsey, imbued with some sort of magical power, activates the metal lockdown door before pulling out a knife. Cordelia throws Angel her sword and he asks her to go and shut down the failsafe as Lindsey's knife transforms into a sword and they begin to fight. Lindsey is very strong and wants to fight to the death, Angel's death; meanwhile Cordelia struggles to turn off the failsafe machine as suddenly steam begins to rise from the edge of the circle on which they are fighting and the base begins to rise.
Back upstairs. Gunn, Wesley, Lorne and Fred are preparing ingredients in a ritual bowl, although Gunn would prefer to be fighting and Lorne is not best pleased to find that, as a demon, they need some of his blood.
Angel and Lindsey continue to fight both verbally and physically until Lindsey stabs Angel through the heart and kicks him through the air back onto the ever rising roof of the tank. Lindsey, believing he has won, taunts Angel telling him he has gone from champion to corporate puppy in a few months but Angel scoffs that it should have been wood as he pulls out the sword and the fight continues. Cordelia finally finds the right button and the cylinder raises releasing the crystal and shutting down the machine as Lindsey cries, "No!" Angel reminds him that all the new tricks he has don't matter; he won't beat him because he's Angel and with that he punches him through the air. Lindsey wonders if Angel will be able to kill him but he doesn't have to because all Lindsey's tattoos begin to disappear.
Upstairs, Wesley chants the spell to remove the tattoos.
While back in the failsafe chamber, a portal opens up in the ceiling and Lindsey, facing the wrath of the Senior Partners, is pulled up through it.
In the lobby, Eve steps into the lift as Angel reminds her that the Senior Partners will be angry. She leaves and Lorne suggests they all go for a drink which they agree is a great idea so Angel goes to fetch his jacket as Cordelia tells the others they will catch them up.
In Angel's office Cordelia asks him if he feels good, he does but he doesn't think he really helped anyone so she reminds him that with all the people in the world he tries to save he is one of them. Angel thinks Lindsey wasted a lot of energy trying to make him doubt himself and now, although he knows it isn't over, he does feel that he can do the job again and beat whatever is coming. Cordelia says that she has always known this and she just needed for him to know it too; she knows he will win in the end but wishes she could be there to see it. She tells him she can't stay as this is not her anymore and he can say goodbye to the gang for her once he understands but he says he will never understand and he needs her. Cordelia tells him she is on a different road and this is her off ramp as the PTB owed her a favour and she didn't waste it. Tearfully she says, "I'll be seeing you," before turning to leave but at the door she hesitates and runs back for a kiss. The phone rings and Cordelia tells him he has to answer it and as he walks over to his desk she calls, "You're welcome." It is the hospital calling to inform Angel of Cordelia's death which he says is impossible as she is standing right behind him but as he turns she has gone and stunned, he asks when she died finally repeating down the phone that she never did wake up. Sadly he hangs up the phone, stares into his empty office and quietly thanks her.
