Episode 18, Season 5 Title: "Origin"
Written by: Drew Goddard Directed by: Terrence O'Hara Original Air Date: April 21st, 2004
Teaser:
Illyria stands in Fred's lab as Wesley watches her through the office window. Angel approaches, reminding Wesley that he doesn't have to do this alone but he says he has nothing else to do as they have made no progress with Gunn. Angel assures him he will not leave Gunn in the hell dimension but in the meantime they need to focus on Illyria and discover more about her, as they are unsure of her strength they decide Spike should have the task. Wesley tells Angel that she doesn't understand this world but Angel is more interested in Wesley's well being and reminds him that Fred is dead and he needs to start living.
In his office, Wesley listens to a couple tell him how their son was mown down by a van, slamming him into the side of their garage before speeding off, but their son got up unharmed and so the police officer investigating the case suggested they contact Wolfram & Hart. Their son is downstairs unaware of the real reason they are at the law firm.
Walking through the lobby at Wolfram & Hart, Angel is stopped dead in his tracks as he hears a voice call, "Hey dad.", and turning he finds the voice belongs to Connor.
Act I:
Connor crosses the lobby to his parents who Wesley introduces to Angel as Lawrence and Colleen Reilly. Connor introduces himself, shaking Angel's hand without a trace of recognition as Angel, unable to meet his eyes, informs the Reilly's that they can not help them.
In Angel's office Wesley fills him in on the details but Angel's tells him they are not taking the case, they don't have the time with everything else going on.
In the cellar in the hell dimension, Gunn, laid out on a table, has just had his heart removed by the demon when suddenly the wound in his chest closes and he sits up in confusion. He can't remember what he was looking for and as the demon hands him a small bulb he calls out that it is ok, he has found it, before ascending the stairs.
Spike lands on the ground having been punched by Illyria and he tells her that there will be no more punching him in the face; she is supposed to tell him what it feels like so that he can write it down. She admits that she enjoys hurting him and punches his face again, he punches her back and so she sends him flying though the air just as Wesley enters. Wesley reminds him there are automated testing devices in the room and he doesn't need to let her pummel him. She senses Wesley is frustrated and he tells her of his disagreement with Angel, explaining that he doesn't always understand him and wonders at his loyalty despite this but he says he trusts him.
As Marcus enters Angel's office, Angel angrily demands to know why Connor appeared at Wolfram & Hart but Marcus tells him it would have been smart to obtain some information so they could find out what is happening. Angel reminds him that he made a deal with the Senior Partners, Connor got a new life, memories were changed and in return Angel worked at Wolfram & Hart and Marcus assures him that the deal stands and the Senior Partners are more than happy with him. Marcus points out that the Senior Partners are not behind this but someone is trying to get to Angel and using Connor to do so.
In the Reilly's car Connor confesses that he knows they were at the law firm because of the van business, he knows they are worried but he is ok, he agrees it is weird but asks them not to be scared. As they park at the motel the car door is suddenly wrenched open and a demon pulls Connor from the car, punching him before turning on his father. As he falls to the floor another demon attacks his mother and so Connor grabs the demon, punching him though the air and onto a car. Shocked at his own strength, he looks at his hands as the other demon attacks him and they begin to fight. Suddenly Angel appears and begins to fight both demons as Connor watches in awe. He throws one demon onto the car, breaking his neck before breaking the back of the other on his leg. Connor is shocked but just grins at Angel thinking it is awesome how he almost broke the demon in half.
Act II:
Connor's dad is injured so Angel suggests they take him back to the law firm where they have doctors who can take care of him; he also needs to talk to Connor.
At the law firm, Angel tells Connor his dad will be fine and Connor wonders what attacked them and if he is a demon too. Angel tells him he is a human with special abilities and Connor acknowledges that Angel is a vampire; he seems unfazed by the new knowledge but is worried about how he will explain to his parents. He asks Angel about his life as a vampire as they walk along the hall. Connor asks if everyone at Wolfram & Hart is a superhero at which point Spike falls through a nearby door, still in the throws of his fight with Illyria. Angel takes Connor into the room to meet them, checking on Spike whom Illyria would like to keep as a pet. Illyria notes that Connor is attracted to her, which he denies, blaming it on her outfit before confessing he has always had a thing for older women. Lorne arrives to let Angel know that Wesley needs to see him.
In his office, Wesley tells Angel that the demons they encountered are called Kith'Harn Demons, known henchmen of a warlock named Cyvus Vail who has a large network throughout L.A. Connor wonders why they want him and Angel decides to visit Vail, refusing to take anyone with him, which doesn't please Wesley.
In his office Wesley makes a call, asking for everything there is on Cyvus Vail.
Angel arrives at Vail's house where Vail tells him that he wasn't trying to kill Connor but attempting to make him understand his capabilities. Angel asks what Vail knows about Connor and Vail replies that he built him.
Harmony brings the files on Vail to Wesley; she also leads in Illyria who was wandering the halls. At another desk, Lorne, searching old records, discovers that Vail was once on the Wolfram & Hart payroll, he specialised in memory reconstruction and temporal shifts. He shows Wesley a file detailing a reality shift which happened on the day they took over Wolfram & Hart.
Back at Vail's, as Angel threatens him, he begins to recount memories of Connor's childhood. Vail confesses he built Connor's memories as Angel, shocked, wonders what he wants. Vail wants someone killed, Sahjahn. Angel points out that he trapped him in an urn where he can do no harm but Vail has the urn and he is not satisfied, he needs to finalise his affairs. Vail produces a small glowing box which he says is an Olan Window, a spell allowing warlocks to see the past as it once was. He warns Angel that if it were to break near someone who has had his mind altered, all the old memories would come rushing back, he tells Angel not to make an enemy of him. Angel offers to kill Sahjahn but he can't as there is a prophecy and it must be Connor who kills him, he just needs Angel to make him into a killer once more.
Act III:
Back at the law firm, Angel gives Connor the news that he must kill Sahjahn. Wesley wonders why they are entertaining the idea so Angel points out that Vail made threats, which still does not satisfy Wesley who tells Angel that Vail did a huge spell the day they took over Wolfram & Hart. Connor asks if Sahjahn is strong to which Wesley confirms that he nearly killed Angel when they last fought, but Angel is adamant that this is different because Connor is special. Connor realises there is no choice and asks for confirmation from Angel that Vail will leave his family alone if he does this. Angel nods his head and they leave as Wesley, confused and angry, watches them.
In the hell dimension, Gunn lies on the table begging as the demon prepares to cut out his heart. Just then Marcus descends the stairs and approaches Gunn, removing the amulet and introducing himself as Gunn sits up, his memory returned. He begins to offer Gunn a proposition, asking if he would like to go back and pointing out that Angel and the gang are not doing much towards rescuing him. Gunn asks for the amulet back and, placing it around his neck, he lays back on the table and calls for the demon to get on with it.
At Wolfram & Hart, Angel talks Connor through some fighting skills as he promises him he won't be alone when he fights Sahjahn. He tells him he is faster than Sahjahn and to make sure that he doesn't allow Sahjahn to slow him down.
In the archives at the law firm, Wesley searches through files whilst explaining to Illyria that reality has been changed. She tells him that some of Fred's memories changed the moment she did and, surprised at this, he asks if she can see what they were before but she says they are gone. As he searches a file she asks if Fred is still the person he thought she was, he looks up stating that none of them are and as they leave we see the contract signed by Angel on top of the file.
Connor and Angel arrive at Vail's house and Connor immediately squares up to Vail informing him that in return for killing Sahjahn, Vail will leave his family alone and if he doesn't Connor will slit his throat. Vail directs Connor to the other room where the urn sits on a table together with some weapons. Angel reminds him to make sure he doesn't let Sahjahn distract him. As Connor approaches the table he turns to ask what he is supposed to do but there is a wall behind him and he is alone.
Vail tells Angel that Connor can't see them as he couldn't take the risk of Sahjahn getting loose.
As Connor takes the lid from the urn, Sahjahn appears thanking him for his release but Connor tells him he is there to fight. Sahjahn has planned for this moment and is surprised that Connor is not more intimidating. He punches Connor to the ground.
Angel runs to help but is blocked by the barrier between the rooms. He watches as Sahjahn and Connor begin to fight and demands that Vail open the doorway but Vail threatens Angel with the Olan Window and tells Angel to watch as his son grows up.
Sahjahn is winning the battle and kicks Connor across the floor where he lays seemingly beaten.
Angel turns to Vail demanding that he open the barrier and is shocked to find Wesley holding the box. Wesley knows that Angel sold them out to Wolfram & Hart and as Angel asks him for the box, Illyria punches Angel telling him that Wesley no longer takes orders from him.
In the other room Sahjahn hauls Connor over the table preparing to kill him.
Wesley is angry that Angel changed the world and Angel confesses that Connor is his son, leading Wesley to the false conclusion that Fred was the price for his son. Angel denies it and begs Wesley to put the box down. Wesley asks if the box will undo the past but Angel assures him it won't bring her back. Wesley prepares to smash the box and Angel asks for his trust but Wesley says he can't as he throws the box to the ground. There is a huge burst of light and as it shatters the energy throws them to the ground.
Act IV:
Wesley appears distressed as his memory returns but Angel is thinking only of Connor.
Sahjahn is strangling Connor when suddenly Connor grabs him by the throat and throws him across the room. His killer instinct has returned and he rolls over the table grabbing a large axe as he goes. They fight but Connor is stronger and slices Sahjahn across the stomach before decapitating him. Angel enters the room, and Connor asks if he saw him adding that he went all hardcore for a moment. Unsure which Connor he is facing, Angel asks if he is ok to which Connor replies that he doesn't like anyone touching his neck. He just wants to go back and see his parents; he is not sure that fighting is for him..
In Wesley's office at Wolfram & Hart Illyria states that Wesley betrayed Angel by stealing his son and she wonders if they are memories he needed back. He replies that at least he knows what happened. She tells him there are two sets of memories, those real and those fabricated but he orders her to push reality from her mind and focus on the other memories as they were created for a reason. To hide from the truth she wonders? "To endure it", he states.
Connor finds Angel in his office staring out the window. Angel asks after his dad and Connor confirms he is ok but pretty mad at Angel as he told him he took him out demon hunting. Angel agrees to talk to him but then Connor tells him it was a joke and advises him to lighten up. Angel wonders if Connor will tell his parents who he really is and Connor confirms he will give them the truth more or less, that he is different and that is a good thing. He tells Angel he feels happier knowing he is looking out for him but Angel points out that they haven't yet found Vail. Connor is not worried as there is nothing Vail can show him that he hasn't already seen. Angel contemplates this as Connor says goodbye, he has to go back to his life. Angel asks if he has to leave right now to which Connor replies that he should as his parents don't feel safe and he has to do what he can to protect his family. Looking Angel in the eyes he says, "I learned that from my father." With a small smile he leaves and walks to the elevator as Angel watches him from his office. He turns back to look at Angel once before stepping into the elevator.
