Episode 20, Season 5 Title: "The Girl in Question"
Written by: Steven S. DeKnight & Drew Goddard Directed by: David Greenwalt Original Air Date: May 5th, 2004
Teaser:
In the lobby at Wolfram & Hart, Gunn and Angel heatedly discuss a case, the former seeing a need for urgency whilst Angel wants to check over the details first. Reluctantly Angel agrees to send Spike on the mission, but Spike does not want to go, stating that he is not a garbage collector. Gunn reiterates that to avert a gang war they need to go to Italy and collect a body, the remains of the Capo Di Famiglia of the Goran demon clan, if they get him within the next 26 hours he can be resurrected but only if the proper rituals are performed by the immediate family. If not he will stay dead which will create an opening for rival gangs and although the capo was human tolerant and kept a low profile, other gangs may not. Angel tells Spike to pack his bags, just then the phone rings and seeing Angel's face Spike asks what's wrong now, Angel tells them it's Buffy.
Act I:
As Angel prepares to leave, Gunn wonders what is going on and Spike asks if Buffy is ok. Angel explains that something happened in Rome, which, says Gunn, is where the capo was killed. Angel assumes it is all connected, The Immortal whacks the capo, lures him to Rome, takes out a slayer and a vampire with a soul, plus, adds Gunn, he also starts a gang war. Angel asks Harmony to order the company jet and heads for the elevator and as Spike follows him they argue, Spike insisting that he is going too, his argument being they get the capo's body, rescue Buffy and he will make sure The Immortal doesn't kill Angel.
Angel and Spike are still arguing on the plane, Angel thinks Spike's MO is to ride in and rescue Buffy thus saving the day, but Spike knows that is Angel's plan too. Angel mentions that he is seeing Nina, although she isn't his girlfriend. Angel tells Spike that it is important that they put aside their differences and work together as it is a dangerous mission.
Angel and Spike hit the mini bar. Spike asks Angel how he knew about Buffy being in trouble and he admits he has a source which leads Spike to the realisation that Angel has been spying on her. Angel says he just had one person watching her, just to make sure she was ok but he was spotted and phoned Angel when he regained consciousness in the hospital. Angel asks Spike if he remembers the last time they were in Italy.
Flashback to the 1950's where Spike and Drusilla drink martini's in a club.
Angel recalls that he wasn't in Italy in the 1950's, he is talking about 1894 and the room of pain.
Flashback to Rome, 1894; Spike and Angelus are manacled and chained to the ceiling. Attempting to break free, they curse The Immortal as suddenly the door opens and a man in a suit arrives, backed by men with crossbows. The man apologises on behalf of The Immortal before explaining they were detained as punishment for acts they committed against his concerns. Angelus states that it is their city, they were here first, but the man informs them that The Immortal was, 300 years ago, and they are to leave the city and never return. Unimpressed, Angelus snaps his neck and warns off the other two and as they leave he tells Spike there is going to be a reckoning after he's had good meal and seen Darla.
Arriving back at their room, they find Darla naked under a sheet seemingly unconscious on the bed.
Back in the present at the law firm, Illyria wanders the lobby as Wesley and Lorne watch her. Wesley explains that her powers have been greatly reduced and overhearing this Illyria comments that they revel in her defeat; she finds her current state worse than death as she is unable to function without her power. Wesley suggests she return to the lab so that they can perform more tests to try and help her find a new way to function. She agrees but makes it clear it is on her terms and as she leaves Wesley tells Lorne that she is still unpredictable and they should be careful not to agitate her. Just then Lorne sees Fred's parents step out of the elevator behind Wesley; they are on their way to Hawaii and thought they would call in for a surprise visit. Wesley asks them into his office. As they walk through the lobby, Illyria watches from above.
In Rome, Spike and Angel knock at the door of apartment 34, surprised when Andrew answers the door greeting them in Italian. He explains that Dawn and Buffy have been letting him crash since his apartment was incinerated and invites them in. Andrew wonders if they would like a tour of Rome at night, asking if there is anywhere they want to go. Angel is only interested in Buffy and as Andrew explains that she has gone to see The Immortal Spike, flabbergasted, asks if she has gone by herself. She has only just left so Angel thinks it could be worse. Andrew mentions that most nights they don't leave the house, they just stay at home and snuggle up, at their confusion he realises Angel and Spike didn't know Buffy and The Immortal were together. Spike says, "Its worse."
Act II:
Back in 1894, Angelus rushes to the bed to see if Darla is ok, rolling her onto her back and kissing her then realising The Immortal has tasted her. Angelus asks if he hurt her and she says not until she asked him to. Darla is obviously smitten and Angelus points out that he is his arch nemesis but Darla tells him it was only fornication. Spike thinks Angelus has been made a fool of as just then Dru, half dressed, enters the room and he realises they both have. Angry, he demands to know how Drusilla could let him touch her but Darla just says he was insatiable as both Angelus and Spike realise they were detained so he could violate their women. Giggling, Drusilla and Darla leave the room to go and have a bath. Furiously, Angelus and Spike decide on blood vengeance as Angelus states that it's time The Immortal knew who he was dealing with.
Angelus and Spike are outside a club where a bouncer, holding a guest list, tells them they are not on it and are not allowed in. As they try to barge through they are stopped by an invisible barrier which makes Angelus angrily shout that it is not over!
Rome in the present day, Spike and Angel await the body of the capo in the foyer of a house. They realise it's over with Buffy, not that Spike ever thought he had a chance. As they talk an eavesdropping demon turns to look at them. They agree she must be under some kind of spell and Angel wonders how she could fall for a century's old guy, with a dark past, who may or may not be evil; he stops short realising he could be describing himself. They decide they will get the body of the capo and then break the spell. An elderly demon woman arrives, handing Angel a small travel bag and thanking him. Thinking the bag small, Angel opens it discovering there is only a head. Spike asks what happened to his body and the demon replies that as Goran demons age their heads become heavy and drop off. If they get the head back to Los Angeles and perform the ritual in time, a new body will hatch from the head.
Angel and Spike knock on the door at Buffy's apartment to find she is still out, and so they ask Andrew if he knows where they went.
Back at the law firm, Wesley shows the Burkles into his office. As they enthuse about the new offices, Wesley becomes increasingly uncomfortable until finally they ask where she is. Wesley is just about to tell them when 'Fred' bursts through the door and runs over to hug her parents. Wesley watches them, shocked at Illyria's transformation.
Back in Rome, Spike and Angel work their way through the dance floor at a nightclub and, finally reaching the bar, they ask the female bartender if she has seen Buffy and The Immortal. She points to a blonde woman on the dance floor and as they both walk towards her, they begin arguing over who had the real relationship with Buffy. Suddenly Angel realises they don't have the head, each thinking the other had picked it up. They turn back to the bar in time to see the demon (that was in the foyer earlier) stealing the head. Spike confronts him, asking where he is taking it, when out of nowhere the demon's henchmen arrive, surrounding them.
Act III:
A fight ensues, filmed in slow motion, ending with Spike and Angel punching each other at which point they realise the demon has gone. They run out into the street where they are nearly mowed down by a red convertible which Angel recognises as belonging to the firm. Spike grabs a nearby scooter calling for Angel to jump on, which he does with great reluctance; they speed off after the car. They follow the car through the narrow streets and decide to try a short cut to head him off but when they get to the end of the alley, the car is there and the demon crashes straight into them. As they pick themselves up the car speeds off, leaving Angel really angry that they lost the head. Spike tells him they only have 12 hours left and they should stop arguing to which Angel agrees and they plan to find the head and go home.
Back at the nightclub once more, the bartender informs them Buffy has now left. Angel rants that he [The Immortal] has got Buffy and he wonders why this is always happening to them. They begin to console themselves with the fact that they are away from home and so lacking in resources when suddenly Spike wonders if there is a branch of Wolfram & Hart in Rome.
As they exit the elevator at the Italian branch of the law firm they find they are in an exact replica of the L.A. branch. A woman rushes over, calling 'caio' and kissing Spike on both cheeks before turning to Angel and greeting him as Angelus. Angel corrects her on his name and she mentions his soul stating that the gypsies are filthy people. She introduces herself as Ilona Costa Bianchi, the CEO of the Italian branch, and offers their services, telling them they can have anything, the world, two worlds if they want. She invites them into her office, calling to her male assistant to join them. Spike comments that she seems nice.
Back at Wolfram & Hart in L.A, 'Fred' shows her parents around the lab as her dad comments on how nice everyone is, she jokes that she would fire them if they weren't. Wesley stares at her as Fred's mom wonders how it came to be so long since they last saw each other and Wesley tells her they have been very busy. Mrs Burkle wants to know if Wesley has a lady in his life, making a fumbled attempt at matchmaking as Wesley stands in solemn silence. 'Fred' offers to show the Burkle's her office and as they go on in front, Wesley takes the opportunity to demand what Illyria is doing and she replies that his grief is hanging off him and she could not tolerate it from them too. He asks how it is possible and she explains that it is a simple modulation of her form meaning she can be who she chooses. She moves close to him, asking him if he wants her to stop, as he stares at her in total despair. Mrs Burkle appears, asking if everything is alright and 'Fred' turns to face her smiling as Wesley chokes, "Everything's fine."
Back in Italy, Ilona asks how she can help and they explain that The Immortal has cast a love spell on their friend. Ilona has had many satisfactory dealings with him in the past and informs them he would not use a love spell as he considers them dirty. Angel states that they need to do some research and asks if they have an Italian version of Wesley; they do but he is taking a nap. She knows all about their mission and how they have lost the head, which in her opinion is more important, and she tells them the head is in grave danger, they are already in possession of a ransom note addressed to Angel. The drop is due to take place in less than an hour so Angel requests a helicopter and an assault team as Spike asks for guns. She tells them it is a civilised country and when someone gets kidnapped, they pay the ransom and they already have the money. Rolling his eyes, Angel agrees.
As Spike and Angel wait at the drop point, their argument is resurrected, this time over who saved the world and how. Angel eventually says that the point is that they are better than this and what on earth does Buffy see in The Immortal. At that moment a car pulls up and the demon steps out holding the bag and remarking that she may like the cut of his trousers.
Back in L.A., the Burkles are about to leave and they hug 'Fred'. Mrs Burkle asks Wesley to look after her before checking to see if 'Fred' is ok as she seems different somehow. She assures them she is and hugging her dad she tells them she loves them as they promise to be in touch soon and step into the elevator. As the door closes, 'Fred's' eyes harden and Wesley asks if she got what she needed from the experience to which she responds that it was most informative. Wesley warns her to never do it again.
In the plaza in Italy the demon and his muscle surround Angel and Spike as the former taunts Angel with tales of The Immortal, confessing he is a little in love with him and asking if he has read his life changing book. Angel remarks to Spike that he is fed up of Italy, Spike agrees and they begin to fight the henchmen. The demon throws the bag into the air and the henchmen throw it backwards and forwards as Spike and Angel attempt to grab it. As the demon takes hold of the bag once more he holds a gun to the head, threatening to shoot it as he requests the money. They make the exchange and the demon and his henchmen leave. Spike opens the bag, grumbling that The Immortal must be behind this. There is a bomb inside it and it will explode in 4 seconds.
Act IV:
Spike complains that his leather coat is ruined and Angel tells him to get over it. Spike says it is like a second skin, it is who he is and he will never get it back.
Back at the law firm in Rome, Spike tries on a new leather coat, courtesy of Ilona who has also given Angel a red and white leather jacket which he doesn't really like. She tells him he looks gorgeous, it is the latest style, but Angel is angry about the missing head and demands the helicopter and assault team again. Ilona just pushes them from her office, smiling and assuring them that they will take care of things. Spike and Angel beat on her door, reminding her that they are heroes, champions and they don't need help cleaning up their mess. The door remains closed to them and sighing Angel suggests they should just go home to which Spike agrees.
Knocking on Buffy's apartment door once again, Andrew informs them she still isn't back before inviting them in and leaving the room to get ready to go out. Spike asks if Buffy has been behaving strangely, wondering if she is under some kind of spell and Angel thinks it may be mind control or something. Andrew (out of sight) tells them she just fell for The Immortal on her own and she is happy now. Angel spouts that she hasn't finished baking yet and he had to wait and now The Immortal is eating cookie dough. Spike glances sideways at him as he slumps into a chair but as Andrews tells them The Immortal does have his faults; both their eyes light up. Andrew says the point is they should move on as Buffy has and Spike notes that they have been running around like love struck teenagers. Andrew tells them Buffy loves them both but she needs to live her life and people change, at which point he re-appears in a tux much to their surprise. He answers his door, greeting two beautiful women in Italian before heading off as Spike and Angel stand deflated, finally deciding to go home.
Back in L.A., Wesley stands in his office in the darkness staring into space. Illyria, still in Fred outfit and voice, enters the room asking if he is mad at her. He tells her to stop but she says he loves her. He states that he loved Fred and she tells him part of him still does, she can feel it and she wishes to explore it. He tells her it will never happen as he is sickened by her and he demands that she returns to her usual state. As he leaves the office she becomes Illyria once more.
As Angel and Spike arrive back at the law firm, Angel informs Gunn they lost the head but Gunn says it is on Angel's desk. There is a card on top of the bag, which reads, "Regards, The Immortal." Angel rips it to shreds, angrily stating that he hates him as Spike wonders again what Buffy is thinking. Angel says she doesn't have the best taste in men and the bickering starts up all over again. Eventually Spike asks if they could just lock her away in a box so nobody could touch her and Angel considers this before stating that she wouldn't let them. Spike and Angel sit side by side on Angel's desk and, realising there is nothing they can do, they firmly commit to moving on.
